The mechanical machinery of a primal uprising: A 2.0-star "stagnant" drift through pixelated fur.2011 (2.0)I watched "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in the theater in 2011, and it remains a "pathetic" 2.0-star record in my archive—a film that failed to provide a visceral "revelation" despite its "vivid" motion-capture aspirations. While the production attempted a "sensational" reboot of the classic franchise with high-tension CGI, the narrative rhythm felt incredibly "stagnant" and mechanical, following a 100% predictable trajectory that lacked the "chewy" intellectual depth or the "raw" rebellious soul found in my 5.0-star pillars. Seeing the "pathetic" reliance on tired blockbuster tropes **** the fourth wall of my immersion; it felt more like a "stagnant" technology showcase than a "raw" cinematic experience. Although Andy Serkis’s performance was "vivid," the overall emotional payoff felt "pathetic" and unearned, leaving me in a state of "silent frustration" rather than the intended state of "hororong." The 95% preservation of my memory is centered on the "vivid" but hollow spectacle of the Golden Gate Bridge battle, a rhythmic journey that provided no permanent, "sensational" scar on my soul. Unlike the high-tension precision of "The Chaser" or the "raw" human distrust in "The Experiment," this theatrical encounter felt soulless and "stagnant" in its execution. It stands in my 2011 record as a "vivid" exercise in mediocrity—a 2.0-star artifact of commercial filmmaking that left me detached from its "raw" primate revolution and utterly unimpressed by its high-tension artifice.

This film is really not the best. Honestly, it's one of my least favorite of ALL Planet of the Apes films. However, the practical effects, and especially the makeup are absolutely incredible and stunning. I'm not a huge Time Burton fan, but he is by far the only one who could have pulled off the practical effects the way this movie did.

Despite some impressive looking prosthetics and well shot action scenes it's hard to view Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes as anything other than a messy disappointment.

Planet of the Apes was quite disappointing as I felt the film was cropped and did lack a few things while watching. Mark Wahlberg, Michael Clarke Duncan and Tim Roth were quite good in there roles and Tim Burton did try to keep an understanding timeline of generations. My last point is the ending it was most confusing ending I have ever seen in a film.

I don't think Tim Burton (and the atmosphere he brings to his movies) was the most intelligent choice for a Planet of the Apes movie. The plot is really weak, lots of plot convenience, I don't think the atmosphere matches what is expected for a planet of the apes movie, and I do think the costumes were worse than in the first movies from decades before (maybe intentional to match the atmosphere, but I didn't like it). Would watch the first 5 movies from the 60'/70's again, but wouldn't watch this one again.

7.5/10 I really appreciate the different approach to the story from Tim Burton's as i really think this Planet Of The Apes remake was pretty good overall, but what lacking the most i think was that because i believe this is a pretty straight forward movie, it happens pretty quickly to the conflict that i felt what lacking the most was the characters development, i do felt in the first half of the movie there is not much of a personality in the characters specifically Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter characters, Thade i found quite annoying instead of terrifying in the first half until at the end i can admit that he was basically a mad ape, and Ari was just not as good of a character or sweet of a character as Dr. Zira in the original even if they didn't want to make her like it, but it's not like i hate the characters, they just flawed characters, and i'm finally fine with them towards the end, including the story which i thought again not as clever as the original but i still really enjoyed it and in fact the best thing about the movie, i like the makeup and the costume design, i like Mark Wahlberg in the film, Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes remake takes on a very different but still interesting take on the story, flawed but still pretty good overall.

Yeah... pretty poor. I didn't even know this existed until a week or so ago. Gotta be frustrating for all involved that they were in a remake/reboot of 1968's 'Planet of the Apes' that wasn't the 2011 version. This one walked so that one could fly etc. Speaking of flying, what the heck is with the high jumping apes in this? It looks so silly and doesn't add anything; a very odd choice. It is, though, a surprise that this film flopped given who got attached to it. Tim Burton as director, with the acting talents of Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan and Paul Giamatti. It's neat that Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison (stars of the original) made cameos, though. Wahlberg feels a bit miscast, though Bonham Carter and Giamatti are solid; the latter particularly seemed to enjoy the role. The film does have a Burton edge to it, as expected, but this is one of his weaker films no doubt. Some other negatives, for me, include the make-up, esp. for General Thade, - I'm in the minority there - and the story's pacing.

What a disappointment. This movie is so mainstream, so that means dumb and full of action, screaming in the camera and logic holes. In addition Mark Wahlberg plays his character as an arrogant unsocial boring guy. Many other characters are boring also, typical mainstream movie. And the dialogues are so dumb. What a difference to the original movie, which is far more interesting. Only the costumes and environments were great.

A remake for going ape, literally. It´s more dark than the original of 1968, the makeup work excels the previous version but, it´s not enough for make it one of masterpieces of Tim Burton. The most salvageables are the terrific performance of Tim Roth and the ending part that tributes The day that Earth stood still and The Twilight Zone. Pay attention for the assorted winks of 1968 original.

OK. This movie would only make sense if it came right after Burton's "Pee-wee's Big Adventure". Then it would be lauded for the courage of the studio to give the helms to an imaginative and nonconforming visionary. And I would be like, "have you seen the new POTA, crazy good, a water-shed moment in sci-fi movie-making. Grown-up comedy". Nope. This was 2001. An established Burton remaking as established classic. No go.

Tim Burton's reimagining of Planet of the Apes succeeds in terms of makeup and costume designing, but falls completely flat on its face with its script, acting, and direction.

This film, directed by Tim Burton, is a sci-fi work based on a simple script: an astronaut inadvertently falls on a planet similar to Earth, where humans are subjugated to a dominant monkey race. From there, he tries to organize a resistance and create conditions to return to his ship and travel back to Earth. That is, Burton didn't know how to use his famous creativity to show us something new. This story is almost entirely something we have already seen and read (if we consider the origin of everything, Pierre Boulle's book), dressed in new clothes, more modern or different. The work of the actors is generally acceptable, with Marc Wahlberg standing out with the main role, followed by Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Roth. The human characters are downright poor and main character's love interest attempts always seem out of context. Overall, it's a movie good enough to be seen but not enough to be remembered.

This was garbage. It's stupid and makes no sense. The book and the 1968's version were better than this.

This movie is absolutely horrible! Mark Wahlberg was terribly miscasted and the twist ending absolutely makes no sense. This is one of the worst remakes I’ve ever seen in my life.

The ending completely wraps up to be one of the dumbest twist endings in the entire Planet of the Apes franchise and in the entire movie history. Mark Wahlberg was bad for the role by the way.

Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes is bad, boring, bland movie. It’s populated by bad, boring, bland characters. Generally these characters are played by entertaining actors, like Tim Roth and Paul Giammatti. This is excepting Mark Wahlberg, who comes across as bad, boring, and bland when forced into a generic leading man role. This is also excepting the human female lead. She is an attractive human female and literally nothing else. This should also not include Helena Bonham Carter, whose character is uncomfortable to watch. In fact most of the fun cast is given so little to do that any second of movie that’s actually entertaining is countered by two or three that are bad, boring, and bland. It’s definitely the worst movie of the franchise, and we should all be glad they never got to make more.

Weak movie compared to both 2011 version and 1968 version. Plot is bad, just bad, it is plain and simple, there are no twists, ideas of time travel is overused.

A widely panned flick which diminished the Planet of the Apes franchise. Unfortunately, more time needed to be spent perfecting the direction and screenplay. Still, I'd love to watch it again.

Wow, this movie is a piece of ****. Not only does the apes look like some f*cking human dressed in a Halloween suit, the plot is so f*cking stupid. Even Mark Walhberg's performance **** monkey **** and HE IS A GREAT ACTOR!!! The movie opens with an intriguing climax but ends up in a way so ****. Tim Burton doesn't give a ****, why should I? This movie makes me wanna see the way-much better reboot... Planet of the Apes (2001), yeah the bad one. **** this ****.

I don't understand why Tim Burton would agree to direct this. Out of all of his films, this had to be one of the very weirdest. There were parts that will be confusing to some, until you read someone's synopsis of the movie...

Planet of the apes is a intriguing universe filled with excitement and believe it or not apes! Apart from the lack of character chemistry it is made even by the different personalities. This movie has some impressive set, apes and CGI that really bring the movie to life. Apart from the confusing plot twist you and in for one hell of a ride.

Terrible script mixed with a very ugly looking quality, Planet of the Apes is just a full blown mess. Mark Wahlberg does his best, but unfortunately the lack of fun brings this movie down.

Honestly, Wasn't that bad of a movie. I thought it was pretty enjoyable and the action scenes were alright. Certainly lacked a plot and the acting, despite having a strong cast, wasn't that good either. Still enjoyabe to watch, I liked it.

Remake no solo correcto sinó innovador, con un redoble de tuerca. Guapo Mark Whalberg. Simios muy bien caracterizados. Doble historia de amor. Necesaria para todo friki.

Planet of the Apes is so shallow, covered with idiocy, and actors acting worse than monkeys. Tim Burton has disgraced the original and hurt is reputation.

It would take a man like Tim Burton to grossly misconceive an over-budgeted remake like PLANET OF THE APES. This special effects spectacle looks great on screen, but lacks the character and intelligence of the original. As a result, APES was a commercial success, but a critical failure. Astronaut Leo Davidson is thrust through time to find himself trapped on a world ruled by apes. After a planned escape, Davidson becomes the unexpected hero in a human revolt against the apes! The only real hero in PLANET OF THE APES is seven-time Oscar winner Rick Baker for his phenomenal make-up designs, which bring the apes to life in a wide array of different shapes and sizes. The apes simply look incredible, but unfortunately, the appliances hinder the performances of the actors, and often cause them to stumble through their lines. This is not the case for Helena Bonham Carter, who prefers to whisper incoherently, or Tim Roth, who just spits his vile contempt for humanity like venom. Where screenwriter William Broyles Jr. makes his biggest mistake is in allowing all humans to have the capacity of speech, which completely destroys the impact of Davidson's arrival on the planet. There can be no questioning of ape ethics or breakdown in ape philosophy if the lead character is no different than the humans that already exist on the planet. Coupled with Mark Wahlberg's stagnant performance, PLANET OF THE APES misses the point entirely. What is left is an entertaining but empty space epic that will be long forgotten in the years to come. -Carl Manes I Like Horror Movies

Planet of the Apes isn't a fantastic movie and certainly has the faint whiff of 'wasted opportunity' hanging about it. It is, however, a very solid yet throwaway popcorn flick that entertains with great costume design and goofy action. Tim Roth is also really good in his role as General Thade. Still... could have been much better.

This mediocre piece of film making is one of, if not the worst remake of all time. Over the top acting, a boring and predictable plot as well as some freakishly realistic makeup make this one definitely worth avoiding. The original will always remain the classic.

Actually wasnt that bad. It was interesting through out and worth the watch but the acting was far below what I expected from such an experianced cast. Tim Burton once again shows why he is my least favorite director by ruining the potential of this remake/reboot. I agree with the others when they say the visuals were good but the script was terrible. It also didnt help that they did such a poor job explaining things. Still besides all this, It wasnt all that bad.

It was a lot better then I expected for a Tim Burton film. While it wasnt as good as the originals, I still thought it was interesting and good enough to sit through it.

Exciting! A very delicate story with a best cast, especially Mark Wahlberg's performance in the film. This was WAY better than the 1968 film. There needs to be a sequel to see what happens after what happens in the end of the film.

Although I agree about the dazzling visuals, Tim Burton certainly DID NOT spend his time wisely on the script or direction when making "Planet of the Apes".

The first act was great - incredible makeup, and fascinating story watching the apes' lifestyle. However, the film loses speed near the middle and ends up turning into a pretty uninvolving road movie with many boring and useless characters, particularly the human love interest, played by Estella Warren, who has like four lines of dialogue. However, Burton deserves credit for not making a direct remake of the 1968 original, instead creating his own vision. I did like the slow revelation to what the planet of the apes is (not exactly what you'd expect, those who have seen the original), and the unexplained but fabulous twist ending.

Are you kidding ? Here we venture deep, deep into B-movie territory, with everything from the CGI to the acting to the makeup being plain...ridiculous ! The old and the young apes are really unbelievably, flabbergastingly unwatchable. This is moviemaking at its worst ! I swear one of the monkeys looks like Prince !
