The progenitor of monster movies, more enduring than imagined; Jaws demonstrates a steady and masterful skill from Steven Spielberg in both its screenplay and plot construction.

One of the best films in this genre, and despite its age, it's much better than any Piranha or other films about animal conflicts.

Getting to see Jaws on the big screen was like getting to see it for the first time. I never realized that Jaws was only Spielberg’s second movie!

Big giant humongous behemoth freaking shark terrorizes a small fishing village.... let's face it, that what Amity is. It's not so much an "island" as it is a tourist attraction for someone to buy a T-shirt that says, "Amity Island 1975" or "Amity Island 2025". Anyway, the local cop, a privileged college kid, and a salty nutty fisherman try to find and kill the shark. Can they do it?

Of course, this is one of those classic movies that pretty much everyone needs to see, and moved filmmaking forward in our history. There are iconic lines in here that are even used throughout music and other art pieces. Jaws in all in all a monster movie that actually created a fear and terror around sharks that sharks don't even deserve. This movie is a success.

"Jaws" is still one of the most effective thrillers ever made. Spielberg at 27 years old making his second feature defied the odds expectations and overcame the lumpy plotting of Peter Benchley's novel to create an efficient, graceful drama and character study of three individuals which certain skills and different backgrounds that exterminate this great white. Saw this IMAX and it's incredible

This first major success for Spielberg contains elements he would repeat many times in his later films. He continued to focus heavily on his characters, never letting special effects take center stage, unlike many directors of the 1990s. He always prioritized atmosphere over emotion. And then there’s the music, composed by John Williams, which remains legendary to this day. The film’s main theme is still used today whenever a monster’s arrival is parodied. That simple two-note alternation still manages to evoke fear. Jaws became the biggest hit of the summer of 1975. Before its release, Hollywood studios generally avoided the summer months, releasing almost no films between June and September. It was only after the enormous success of Jaws that this changed, and studios began competing to have their own summer blockbusters. Spielberg didn’t just create a legendary film—he also inadvertently helped establish the summer release window for the biggest movies.

OK, this is at least half-good. There's the shark the size of a Russian battleship swimming around Amity Island, better known as Idiotsville. When some swimmers get chewed up like a dog's old wax bone, the authorities must go to town, so to speak. First they set traps and post signs as if the shark can read - "Oops. No swimming here. I guess I better go north to Boston for some human flesh." When everything fails, including the mayor's balls, the chief of police, a shark expert, and the township's leading fisherman/drunk head out to sea, see? They are planning on hooking the maniac shark and bringing him in unless they can kill him on the spot which is better so no more swimmers will end up in the shark's digestive procedure and then get crapped out into the surf or the local moat at the base of the dinner place on the edge of Amity's shore. By the way, Brody is Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss is the little shark nerd, and Bob Shaw is the smelly fisherman with a chip on his shoulder. These motley shmoes will be our heroes if the shark doesn't eat them like a hero sandwich. Ellen is Brody's wife who is hiding while all of Amity is out on the water dropping chum markers and fishing for shark like they fish for trout. What bozos these goofs are. Did they not see the movie? Don't they know that they need a big giant boat so they can hold their own. And speaking of holding their own, they are so stupid, Brody et al, that they neglected to bring even one chick! What's up with that? I'd have stashed a couple of stowaway girls for some after-galley fun. You know, eat, drink, and do Mary. The other woman would be named Martha as in old maid. It seems weird that this story had not gone public on the local cape station news. Maybe it could be broadcast from Francis Shoal. Where the hell is Francis Shoal? Oops, too far forward --- that's "Jaws 2". I'll get to that little fiasco later. Anyway, the shark must be thinking, "These people are lame!". No wonder he staked a claim around here. He knows that everybody who lives in Amity year round has no life. But they're nice. Amity, as you know, means 'friendship'. Out at sea, Quint (Shaw) is the second person to see the shark after Brody after the chief suggests that they may need a bigger boat. Hooper (that's Dreyfuss) is having a great time taking pictures of the beast as if he's hoping to win first prize at Amity's annual Dip Award. He will probably win, then he can visit Brody at his home and bring 2 bottles of wine, one red and one white because he won't know what Ellen is serving.... you know, fish or chicken, or fish or red meat..... whatever. No one ever talks about the fact that there may be MORE than one shark out there. That's just too much. Let's not get panicky. For now, we will all be content to see the three blind morons out on the Orca (Quint's ship). He'll bring so much crap on board that it's a modern day miracle that the vessel doesn't sink before it's even out of the harbor. That's not even including all the garbage Hooper is storing somewhere - all that anti-shark cage stuff. And what is Brody bringing? Don't forget your rubbers, chief! Goodbye, Ellen. And don't let the kids play on the swing-set. Martin (Brody) hasn't fixed that yet. Eventually, 3 big yellow barrels are attached to the shark by way of rope. Will this stop the shark? What do you think? We still have about an hour left of movie junk, so you can imagine that the shenanigans on the boat will linger for a time while the shark gets real comfortable and used to these waters. Quint has his rifle, Hooper has his encyclopedias, and Brody has his nose cream so he doesn't get sunburned. The music, by the way, is super. John Williams did the music, and Verna Fields did the editing, but remember that Spielberg directed and he will get final say on what makes it to the final cut and what won't. Long story short (I know, it's probably too late for that), Brody will try to shoot the shark in the face. Of course, this is after Hooper disappears under the sea and Quint gets to be the blue plate special when the shark decides to have lunch a little early today. The real nemesis here is the competition between Brody and Hooper (at least in the book). One of them will have to win Ellen while the other goes to the adult theater, pulls down his pants, and has a good time watching the dirty flicks. They both avoid it. I know because I was in there and I didn't see either one of them. Not when they're dressed like a dude. Now Dreyfuss could put on a dress and maybe a wig and half the losers in Amity could go to town with this little twerp. Smash cut to the end.... Brody nails the shark, Hooper pops up out of nowhere, and our heroes paddle back to shore using a couple of those barrels. The stink has got to be enough to make both dudes wretch. It is and they don't. Good for them! Fish Stew for dinner tonight. And maybe a beer or salt water. Watch at your own risk. It's boring and not one chick shows her boobs!!!!!!

Jaws is a gotdamn ice cold masterpiece. It deserves every bit of praise it gets. Pure cinematic magic. The shark is just the attraction. The characters are the reason this film swims… yeah, I’m going with that.

Swimming in with exceptional acting, amazing effects work, a terrifying score and an important underlying theme, Jaws is an instant classic that continues to make the audience fear going in the water.

I think this movie is overrated. I get that it was highly influential for its time and contributed to the culture of the summer blockbuster, but as a stand-alone movie, it's really not that great. The acting is average, the shark looks corny, the pacing is slow, and the rewatchability is very low. I would give it points for its influence, but would not recommend this as an enjoyable film.

I’d heard a lot of praise about this movie, and I remember seeing a couple of scenes when I was a kid, but I never really remembered much. Now that I’ve finally watched the whole thing, I think all the praise is absolutely deserved.I was glued to the screen the entire time. The acting was phenomenal — most of the cast felt so real, like they weren’t even acting. The dialogue was great too, especially from that crazy sailor guy. He had some hilarious and intense lines that really stood out. There were even a few funny moments and some jump scares that actually made me flinch, which just made me enjoy it even **** direction still holds up really well especially for its time. It never drags or stretches things out for no reason, which I really appreciated.

Back in the day I'm become obsessed with Jaws because of the theme tune they did back in the 70's I'm so obsessed with old music I remember in the morning playing John Williams' theme tune over and over again and my mum heard it downstairs and told me to turn it down because its loud for her. I don't know how many times that happened but what the hell. A young woman named Chrissy goes for a late-night ocean swim during a beach party. An unseen force attacks and pulls her underwater. The next morning her body is found washed up on the beach. After the medical examiner concludes it was a shark attack, Chief Brody played by Roy Scheider, closes the beaches; Mayor Larry Vaughn persuades him to reconsider, fearing the town's summer economy will suffer. The coroner agrees with the mayor's theory that it was a boating accident. Brody reluctantly accepts until a young boy, Alex Kintner, is killed at a crowded beach. A bounty is placed on the shark, causing an amateur shark-hunting frenzy. Quint played by Robert Shaw, a local shark hunter, offers his services for $10,000. Matt Hooper played by Richard Dreyfuss, examines the girl's remains, confirming that an abnormally large shark killed her saying that it's not a boating accident. So now it is up to the trio to catch a shark and kill it once and for all. For something that is Steven Spielberg's earlier work, that's really something. I'll bet back in the day when they're out of the cinema or see it on TV they'll be p***ing and s**ting their pants when they're thinking they'll be going into the water again. I guess they'll be doing that in the water thinking about sharks. Hahaha! I love the third act where they're on the boat catching a shark where two memorable scenes are being constructed. "You're gonna need a bigger boat." and Quint's speech on how he became a sailor in USS Indianapolis. Much like Steven Spielberg directed some memorable films like Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Hook, Indiana Jones trilogy, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and many more. I love Jaws. It's one of everybody's favorite classics of all time so is mine too. It provides some great shark scenes, jumpscares, and memorable music by John Williams. Like many horror films, Jaws will be in everybody's head when they're asleep and they'll be dreaming about being in the water with sharks and get eaten alive. Not to mention that it spawned three sequels which I'm never a huge fan. I don't mind the second one but the other two are absolutely god-awful. But aside from that, Jaws is an absolute classic and it is one of the greatest films of all time and this definitely will make you get a bigger boat while fishing.

Jaws is a great film. What's the best about this film is how real it feels. I'm not sure, whether everything is accurate or not, but it feels like it is. This film is both funny and brutal, in other words: brave. It's incredibly well-shot, it's well-edited, well-directed. The music is really good. The characters are relatable and well-established except for Quint. He was weird and sometimes I felt he came from a different universe. There is emotion in the movie too, for example I wanted to punch the mayor's face, because he caused most problems.Overall, this movie is great, but nothing more.

The plot is drawn out, but the movie's still enjoyable. It's very impressive that they made something as plain as a great white shark the star of a 2-hour horror movie. Definitely not as interesting as most horror movies nowadays, but still worth a watch.

"Jaws" is one of the top 10 movies ever. More importantly, it is my greatest movie experience. The viewing audience was deeply into the movie. They gasped and screamed and moaned and cheered and applauded right on cue. I don't remember any other movie drawing that much emotion from the audience. Why Robert Shaw didn't get an Oscar nomination is still one of Hollywood's greatest mysteries.

Why it rocks: The film focuses more on the excellent characters rather than the shark itself. Jaws has amazing suspense, and I love how Steven Spielberg took such a simple idea and made it scary. And not to mention, it was probably the first blockbuster ever.

A very good, and evidently a very influential, film from 1975. That release year doesn't even sound correct, the film holds up extremely well in that regard - I knew already, but if I didn't and I had guessed the year I wouldn't have said anything earlier than 1990. This alone raises the film up ½* for me - it's impressively made. I don't, personally, think the story is as perfect as the aforementioned. Don't get me wrong it's all entertaining, but I feel it peaks with the shark terrorising the town as a whole - when it's down to just the trio, I didn't enjoy it quite as much. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss do give notable performances, though. Going back to my initial point, the effects for the shark are incredible. I kinda wanted to simply see more of just the shark, even if we do get more of the great white towards the conclusion. Heck, the film from the shark's prospective would've been 5*. Lastly, that John Williams score is sensational - I think every film fan, whether they've seen it or not, knows that famous theme. Almost 47 years after its release, I've finally seen 'Jaws'. I don't honestly think the story/the characters itself are anything out of this world, but there's so much to admire and praise from a technical aspect. A marvel, really.

Jaws is one of Spielberg's most memorable films. A decent film in which great suspense. It looks great now after + 45 years. Great acting by Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider. And although after the first part 3 more films were released, all of them were shot extremely mediocre against the background of the original.

Jaws is one of the most intense and suspenseful films I've ever seen. Based on the 1974 best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Jaws is highly regarded as the first blockbuster summer movie and it does a great job in building up suspense towards the shark's first appearance. This is also the film that made Steven Spielberg famous, who does a great job building up the tension and making the shark's presence ominous. The practical effects do a fantastic job in bringing the shark to life and making it realistic. The score by John Williams is phenomenal and add to the film's suspenseful nature. The cast do a great job in their roles, especially Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw. Still remains one of the greatest horror movies ever made and will always be regarded as a classic.

Jaws was a very good movie but not until the whole hunting scene that i've felt Spielberg make it too long, besides that, Jaws is still impressive by how terrifying the shark look like, the perfomance, and the action, the whole hunting scene was not bad at all but it just too long that i think the movie can be 30 minutes shorter, overall Jaws is just an ok work by Steven Spielberg.

The shark animatronic barely working during filming turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it forced Steven Spielberg to get creative and make some wonderfully tense and terrifying scenes. But even ignoring that, Jaws has great performances and incredible cinematography, making it one of the most important films ever made.
