1917 is a work of sweeping scale yet pinpoint intimacy.

1917 is an expertly crafted and emotionally exhausting thrill-ride behind enemy lines. Gloriously shot, deftly paced, and striking in its gruesome recreation of the time and place, Sam Mendes’ 1917 wisely never loses sight of the smaller, intimate elements in a fast-paced story with immense scale and action.

Greetings from Lithuania. "1917" (2019) is a movie during which i constantly said to myself - i have never seen anything like it. And indeed, from a craftsmanship perspective - this movie is visually stunning piece of art. Its not my favorite war movie ever by any means, but its a great entry into war movies genre. It reminded me a bit of "Come and See" (USSR masterpiece) regarding its visual style. Directing was amazing as well terrific cinematography - Roger D. deserves another Oscar for this masterpiece of visual telling of a story.Overall, while "1917" lacks more character development, it is unlike anything that I have ever seen (and i saw "Victoria", truly done in one shot). This is a great cinema.

Austin Chronicle
Basing the story on family history, Mendes’ terrifying view of war is poetic and tragic, dreamlike without the forced stoner surrealism that too often afflicts war dramas. It is instead impressionistic, most especially in its highly structured cinematography.

Mendes has made a film that feels wholly alive. It’s a carefully polished picture, not one that strives for gritty realism. But its inherent devotion to life and beauty is part of its power.

By the time it ends, Mendes has built within the audience an intense desire to see the men’s message successfully delivered, and like a true dramatist, Mendes milks it for every drop of tension. He does not blow his big finish.

1917 is impressive but oddly distancing; ultimately stirring but too often gimmicky.

The so-called long take serves as a mask—a gross bit of earnest showmanship that both conceals and reflects the trickery and the cheap machinations of the script, the shallowness of the direction of the actors, and the brazenly superficial and emotion-dictating music score.

i didn't know how good this movie was and I didn't know that I would be hooked from the beginning to the end, cast and scenery and direction were really good, I liked how the whole movie was filmed using 1 camera following the protagonist along which added more into how horrifying the war is and thrilling journey. i rarely rate movies 10 out of 10 but this war movie unlike many others has some uniqueness which again thanks to the direction and the places they chose to film, I highly recommend to give it try.

The story itself does not bring many surprises and the fact that it continues to be shot in sequence, perhaps has attracted the attention of many. In addition, beautiful photography.

It’s a shame I was really looking forward to watching this movie. Extremely strong start, great first 40min and then it all went downhill.. the pilot scene for example, why would the German stab Schofield’s friend? Already outnumbered, Brits showed empathy yet any human being wouldn’t be stupid enough to commit an act that gets you killed but rather opt to get captured. Écoust city plot sealed it off for me, how can the Germans miss so many shots, run behind a guy without even bothering aiming

TBH, it is overrated. The story is simplistic and the movie felt unnecessarily long at times. They could have cut at least 1/4 of it if they wanted to and you will find yourself wanting to fast-forward through the slower parts.

Movie is kinda boring outside of being artsy and it's hard to enjoy an artsy movie with really bad editing. There's multiple points where people are being shot at and the bullets are magically flying from the opposite direction
