Yooka-Replaylee is a solid remaster that preserves the charm of the original, improves visuals and accessibility, but still suffers from a few technical hiccups. The game is ideal for fans of 3D platformers looking for a light and nostalgic adventure.
Nostalgia is the fuel that burns constantly through Yooka-Replayeein the same way it did with the original. There are many examples of games that aim to pay homage to their forbears, but they usually include twists and clever complements to the works they take inspiration from. Yooka-Layleealways appeared to prioritize Rare’s platforming classics over its own identity, and as such it can feel like a parody or a pastiche rather than a game with a unique voice. If you didn’t like Yooka-Laylee, you might diminish Replayleeas merely polishing a turd, but that’s not a fair assessment to make. It’s a true effort to correct a game that was divisive upon its initial release, and the result is a platformer that is sparkly and has been polished well. Yeah it’s still a nostalgia trip riding on the coattails of Rare’s finest, but Yooka-Layleewas always meant to be a tribute rather than an innovator in the genre. Replayleeis definitely the best way to play this game and you should definitely check it out, but you better love Rare platforming classics and gratuitously incessant character voices.
Yooka-Replaylee revitalizes the 2017 platformer with the care it always deserved. The remaster enhances visuals, refines controls, and introduces quality-of-life improvements that finally make exploration a joy. Its world is colorful, dense with secrets, and full of charming NPCs, though the main duo still lacks charisma. Some frame drops on PS5 keep it from perfection, but the smoother gameplay, cleaner camera, and added features make this the definitive version and a strong reminder of why 3D platformers still matter.

It seems interesting and fun to play but unfortunately if they don’t have a cast to dub the game I’m not here to read a book unless I can get invested with the characters I won’t pay the price not worth my time

If you grew up with Banjo-Kazooie, you NEED to play this. Yooka-Replaylee finally manages to fix the squandered potential of the original Yooka-Laylee, and the result is an amazing, beautiful homage the to ideas introduced by the Banjo-series, but modernized with a dash of Super Mario Odyssey. The game not only fixes the gameplay however; the visuals and music have been completely overhauled, and tons of new content has been added, which essentially makes it feel like a brand new game, set in the same worlds as the original. I highly recommend you check it out!

It's still no Banjo-Kazooie, but it's probably the next best thing… like if Banjo and Kazooie got a quirky cousin who shows up to family reunions with a lizard and a bat. I was a Kickstarter backer for the original, so it's pretty cool to see it get a fresh coat of paint and some thoughtful new additions. Playing it this time around felt noticeably smoother and more enjoyable—proof that sometimes a game just needs a little time in the spa. The absolute highlight? Seeing my name in the credits… for the second game in a row. I'm basically a legendary backer at this point. Frame-worthy stuff. Yooka and Laylee aren't quite as charming as the bear-and-bird duo (let's be real, few duos are), but they're perfectly serviceable protagonists. You can have fun goofing around with them. The moveset is solid, and the tonic system is genuinely cool—little customizable difficulty sliders disguised as power-ups. Want a brutal challenge? Slap on the "one heart only + fall damage + drowning in two seconds" combo and suffer like a true masochist. Prefer the easy life? Load up on extra health and convenience perks. It's like the game saying, "Here, pick your own poison… or antidote." The final boss is still Capital B, the biggest jerk in the alphabet. So. Many. Phases. It's the gaming equivalent of that one friend who says "one more round" at 2 a.m. and then drags it out for three hours. He single-handedly gatekeeps the completion percentage for a lot of players. If it weren't for those slippery ledge controls (seriously, it's like Yooka’s feet are made of soap), I'd be singing a higher tune. As it stands, though? 7/10 Perfectly passable. Good, even. But when push comes to shove… I'd still rather just boot up Mario and call it a day. Sorry, chameleon and backpack bat—Bowser's castle is calling.

Yooka-Replaylee feels like one of the best Nintendo 64-era collect-a-thons ever, but with every bit of shine, polish, and refinement that a 2025 release allows. Each level and character design is gorgeous, the orchestral soundtrack is incredible, and there's a ridiculous amount of activities and challenges jam-packed into every single nook and cranny of the game. The whole thing handles as smooth as butter and is a top-tier platformer experience that's oozing with heart, charm, joy, fun, and humor.

I despised the original and love this one. This is how a remake should be done.

I played the original Yooka Laylee four times and got 100% twice. I earned the platinum trophy for this game too. It was a joyous time, hunting down new collectibles, seeing an even more vibrant world, and having a variety of new puzzles. The Kartos sections have become fun, and Rextro isn't an abomination anymore. The difficulty can be too easy on occasion but rarely is it an issue. If you want a 3D platformer that itches that Banjo-Kazooie spot (a game I've gotten 100% in at least eight times), then this game is for you.

Yooka-Re-Playee takes the solid, if flawed foundation of Playtonic’s original game and enhances it in just about every way imaginable. A good game in 2017, Yooka-Laylee has become a great one in 2025.

Playtonic Games has taken Yooka and Laylee to new heights with Yooka-Replaylee, cleverly addressing past criticism with meaningful upgrades. Not every tweak lands perfectly, but platformer fans will find plenty to love in this revamped collectathon.

Checkpoint Gaming
The new and improved Yooka-Re-Playlee takes cues from other modern platform games like Mario Odyssey, successfully turning a janky and awkwardly designed platformer into a bingeable collectathon that feels more packed with platforming challenges. A full overhaul to the graphics, controls, and UI modernises Yooka-Laylee and makes it appealing to more than just classic Rareware fans, but it comes at the expense of the game’s identity as a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie, something that was so central to the game’s original pitch. However, taken as it is, this remake transforms Yooka-Laylee into, if not a masterpiece, at least much less of a mixed bag.

Despite imprecise and frustrating controls in many sections, Yooka-Replaylee has a lot of charm. A must-play for those who enjoyed the original game, or for anyone who loves collecting items in a colourful world.

Yooka-Replaylee works a little better in this remixed iteration, but introduces all sorts of new wonkiness along the way.

Yooka-Replaylee is absolutely fantastic! It genuinely feels like the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie we never got back in the day. The gameplay is smooth, colorful, and ridiculously addictive — I found myself saying “just one more level” way too many times. The character design is outstanding; it perfectly captures that classic Rare-era charm with a modern **** I had to mention a flaw, it would be the camera, which can get a bit annoying at times, but it’s such a minor issue compared to how much fun the rest of the game is. A must-play for anyone who grew up loving 3D platformers!

Never played the original but this one is as boring and forgettable as it gets, from the gameplay, story and characters perspective

This game is absolute garbage. Bad level design, ugly visuals, poor optimization. Original game feels like bad optimized ugly garbage and remake feels absolutely the same way on the next gen console. I love platformers, but this thing is tasteless soulless slop made by amateurs. Don’t recommend it to anyone. It’s a 3rd game and it’s still buggy trash. This people should never make again
