Worryingly disturbing, but just as worryingly patchy to play. A masterpiece of oddness that makes for a malnourished and sluggish video game. [JPN Import; June 2006, p.62]
While not the best example of the genre, "Silent Hill" and "Haunting Ground" fans would certainly find the story appealing and the gorgeous cut-scenes instil the chilling atmosphere that every horror game needs. It’s just a shame that the gameplay is what ultimately lets Rule of Rose down.

Action junkies looking for the next Resident Evil might find the pace a little slow, and the core gameplay doesn't do anything wildly different, but this is still a wonderful psychological thriller that will draw you in with its bizarrely compelling narrative, atmospheric presentation and thoughtful story-based gameplay.

And I hate myself the very most! For playing YOUR stupid games..."

Many of you may recognize me as Unlucky_Gurl on Twitter, a page fully dedicated to this game. I will be simple in my review about it... a cult PS2 classic that genuinely changed my life. I came across this old survival horror during a very dark moment of my life and since then... I have a personal in-depth view of Rule of Rose. Even with it mechanical issues, like the fights with bad hit points or the food research segments that take hours to handle, the story is truly a masterpiece in writing of it kind. You can feel Jennifer's struggles in the cruel world she is forced to live in and the unfair nature of humankind as a whole (with Brown as the only bright light of hope of the among of unsettling darkness that lives around you). In a way... the experience you witness in this game is fully aware of the viewer like a short reminder that, no matter what, you are not alone in your pain. I have more things to say but I think I will leave those thoughts for my own personal fanpage aha... genuinely, I am glad this game exists. A horror title I always make sure to remind others it exists and deserves a chance to shine. Let's hope for a remaster in the future. "Everlasting, True Love, I am yours".

Once seen to completion, Rule of Rose is unquestionably memorable, but as a game it comes well short of current expectations.

There's not one story in all my time playing video games that left this much of an impression on me. It's my favourite video game story by far; the only two that rival it are Silent Hill 2 and SOMA, but even those games didn't have an ending as bittersweet and beautiful as Rule of Rose. Only the combat is bad, but the combat isn't the point anyway. I'd say download an infinite health cheat for PSX2 if you don't want to deal with it.

With sub-par control, a story that could be great but gets lost in a sea of loose ends, and very uninspired, tedious, and infrequent combat, Rule of Rose falls well shy of the intended mark.

Worth Playing
It's at that point in Rule of Rose, when combat becomes a dominant factor but the provided elements simply don't hold up, that frustration sets in.

The story in Rule of Rose is an amazingly twisted macabre tale that you won’t find on a daily basis in your local game store. Unfortunately, the design team appears to have been so focused on the story part of the game that they forget to actually put a game in it.

It’s just a murky brew of meaningless, exploitative dysfunction filling an empty game, and it leaves a bitter taste. [Dec 2006, p.90]

the story of the game was really good, the only thing that really holds the game back is the combat system being so jank. I had a pretty good time with the game overall though

Definitely a must play for classic horror fans. It has flaws with a weak combat system, but the story and dark themes make up for them

Don't get your hopes up with this sluggish mess, the high price is really not worth it

This game isn't very scary when compared to any other PS2 horror series. The story starts off slow enough that you may not want to get into it. The graphics and animation are nothing special except for some filter overlays. Not recommended even though its hard to find.
