Atmospheric and pretty as hell, Resident Evil has been brought back to life with much love and respect. [March 2015, p72]
A remarkable homage to the original survival horror masterpiece to be enjoyed by fans of the original PS1 game, the GameCube remake or even complete newbs. Some of the mechanics like the dated inventory system can and will frustrate, but the overall journey is a rewarding one through one of gaming’s most important games.

Occasionally frustrating, but this remake delivers fresh shocks while still improving on a classic. [Mar 2015, p.66]

The golden example of what a remake should be: the game remains faithful to the original while incorporating some changes that makes it fresh, longer in duration and adding more content assuring a whole new experience even to the ones who played the PS1 classic. The pre-rendered backgrounds look stunning even today, especially in this HD edition, and while the fixed camera angles may seem dated and clunky at times I think they represent a fundamental part of how the ambience is perceived, they constantly make you feel observed and not knowing what could be in front of you is just the cherry on top in an oppressive environment like the mansion. The gameplay is fun, yet a bit slow sometimes, if you're not good at inventory management you will find yourself walking through the same halls several times, this is in fact not a fast paced game by any means and it's ok... The story is engaging while staying relatively simple, exactly what you would expect from a RE game, even tho they extended the lore a bit compared to the original game. I think it is replayable enough, the main two scenarios are the two protagonists Jill and Chris, then you can make some "choices" during the game to influence the endings, which are fairly simple though, not so exciting; you also unlock other difficulties finishing the game that push you to play differently and they are challenges nontheless. So, I loved it, you should play it. Also the Jill costumes are cool, Chris's... not so much.

A great remake that should be the standard for all remakes the character models are absolutely how I imagine all the original version of the cast younger, the gameplay has a challenge and isn’t like newer games that hold your hand and make sure it plays exactly like others, this makes you learn how to use a new/old system that makes you really feel like you’re playing a true survival horror game, the save system in this game is how the save system should be as the default in the modern remakes (such as 2 and 3) at any moment it feels like you could lose hours of progress giving the game real stakes, while the game isn’t a perfect 1:1 recreation I think the lore it adds and the feel and look makes up for it more than any other remake. This is by far the definitive way to experience resident evil 1 doesn’t matter if its the hd remake or the original they’re both amazing games and both need to stop being hated on for their controls being a bit more of a challenge gaming is supposed to be fun but it’s also supposed to be able to be different and not just a copy and pasted experience which I think modern gamers tend to forget overall the game isn’t perfect I’d give it more of a 9.7 personally, it’s a must play in the series.

I’m now in the midst of my third playthrough with this game which will mark my fourth overall run with Resident Evil 1. Somehow it manages to get better each time I start up a new file.

This is the best version of the classic game, with controls updated and in HD, for a reasonable price. Nevertheless sometimes graphics feel "old".

One of the original survival horror games done justice with a worthy remake. Kudos for the impressive visuals and new (optional) control scheme. If you haven't already played this, you definitely should.

Generally well polished and deeply atmospheric, this is Resident Evil amplified and with a brand new set of authentically imperfect controls, but let down a little by occasional low-quality backgrounds.

There's a beautiful simplicity to Resident Evil HD that serves as a reminder that the best mysteries don't need convoluted stories to be enthralling.

This game is the perfect lesson to make a good remake and a perfect horror game. Why are there so many people who haven't played this immortal masterpiece?

great start to an iconic franchise. the gameplay is obviously quite dated and definitely not the most fun to play, however despite this, the story is just so great. the setting is so eerie and works so well. the game also gives us some of the most iconic characters in gaming history. just a great start to this amazing franchise. crazy enemies, great settings and a really engaging story.

Even though I think this game is good and basically made zombie games what they are today I feel I prefer the other old ones better.

Whilst I understand people like the nostalgic element to the game I just don't truly believe that this game holds its own up against the big hitters of now and even back in 2015 when they released this remaster, It's hard for me to play this game and say that it deserves the same plaudits that I was giving games like Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and even MGS5. I'll keep it brief for those wondering If this is really worth it. Gameplay - We're obviously past the whole thing of fixed cameras the gameplay of RE Remaster is lacking big time especially when you compare it to many of the other big games of today, basically RE gameplay is that of run past enemies or choose to shoot them and I've got to say the gun play in this game is awful there is such little control of it what you have to do is face a certain way point your gun out in that direction and shoot, there is literally no aiming whatsoever! How can this be acceptable!? Another thing to note is the fixed cameras this plays into why you see no proper aiming in the game, so your cameras are just basically fixed points some say that this adds to atmosphere and I mean that's up for debate, maybe it does, but If you need a zombie to be hidden whilst knowing its infront of you to be scared how scary is that really? Take a look at Dead Space that's how you do proper gameplay with proper atmospheric elements they don't need to hide things off screen to try and scare you with cheap jump scares. The puzzles however are great, they really do get you thinking that is the one redeeming factor about the gameplay. Graphics - They've done well with the graphics, obviously whilst I pointed out the negatives of fixed cameras I will also admit that they can also make a game look very good at the expense of ruining gameplay, albeit I'm not saying fixed cameras wouldn't work for a hack and slash sort of game its just obvious RE is not that. Music/Soundtrack - RE have always done a fantastic job with chilling music in the background and that remains the same in this game, I truly do believe that their soundtrack is probably the best part about this game along with the puzzles those are the reason I didn't score it lower than 4. So, lastly, this game costs around £16 on steam... you could get countless other games which offer better re-playability some offering multiplayer some offering better graphics and better story telling examples are as follows just so you don't think I'm BSing you - Buy The Deus Ex Collection BUNDLE - £8 Tomb Raider - £15 Just Cause 3 £2.69 And then there is more, so its hard to recommend anyone actually getting this unless you were one of those who played it back in the day of the PS1, but even then I'd say I didn't enjoy the game like I did back then because the standards right now are abundantly much more higher and RE-Remaster failed to impress.

I am RE enthusiast. I finished the original game several times and bought this game out of nostalgia... only to regret that decision in 30 minutes. The mansion is different, there are new rooms, new puzzles. There are some similarities, but overall it's a different game... and it **** at being a "new" game. Specially considering that's for PS4.

SummaryThe game that defined the survival-horror genre is back! Check out the remastered HD version of Resident Evil. Upon arriving they are attacked by a pack of blood-thirsty dogs and are forced to take cover in a nearby mansion. But th... Read More
