R-Type Tactics I & II Cosmos revives the franchise’s ambitious turn-based strategy spin-offs, blending tactical gameplay with the series’ signature ships, enemies, and weaponry. While its steep learning curve and resource-heavy battles won’t appeal to everyone, the expanded sequel content, visual upgrades, and wealth of lore help to make it a rewarding experience for dedicated R-Type fans.

On the one hand, R-Type Tactics 1&2 Cosmos impresses with a wide variety of units and scenarios, an interesting story – which even branches out in the second installment – solid English voice acting, a visually appealing graphical overhaul, three playable factions, and the addition of the Cosmos campaign. On the other hand, the overall package feels somewhat dated in certain areas. The interface has seen only marginal modernization, there is still no tutorial meaningfully integrated into the gameplay, key quality-of-life features like an "undo move" function are missing, and the AI’s behavior isn't always logical – at times, it even attacks its own units. Furthermore, the multiplayer modes from the original games are absent. Nevertheless, those willing to overlook these flaws will experience many challenging battles set against a truly iconic backdrop.

Like a swarm of Bydo filling the screen, R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos is beautiful and compelling, but difficult and overwhelming at times. It’s evidently a huge labour of love, and long-time fans who know their Arrowhead from their Cerberus will have a lot of fun with the game’s clever nuances. For the standard strategy RPG enthusiast, it will require a significant time investment and a willingness to overlook clunkiness in the UI, as well as a rather threadbare story, even in the sequel, where the branching plot points and enhanced characterization are welcome. All those years ago, R-Type initially challenged gamers with, “the fate of two races depends on you. Blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire!” You’ll have to decide if that fate truly compels you to the far reaches of space and back again. Buckle up: you’re in for a hard fight.
