Pokemon Colosseum

Another slight issues is that while the world seems fully realized, and the interface is standard Pokemon issue, the game isn't nearly as massive or deep as something like "Ruby." [Apr 2004, p.83]

It's as if the producers stopped halfway through making it, decided to give it a different spin and forgot to bolster the audio department in the process.

I enjoyed playing this game as a teen, but I have to say at first it shocked me by how dystopian that entire world felt at first. Who knew we'd be heavily into that kind of stuff 1-2 decades later. It's also one of the hardest Pokémon games we've had to date, you have to take training seriously in order to succeed in this game, and strategise more than in previous games, considering every battle is a double battle. Trying to rescue all the shadow Pokémon takes a while as well. One of the few Pokémon games that didn't hold your hand and expected you to know most of the things we already know as regular fans.

This game is not as good as you remember. Don't get me wrong, it is still a pretty decent game. It is the first (and probably last) pokemon arcs that is story driven. You're an edgy teenager who used to be a criminal. Not a bad start. Your goal is to stop the people who do are changing pokemon into demons. Not a bad premise. The music slaps. The graphics are pretty good... for the time. The animations of the pokemon are the real star, but they are also an asteroid hurtling towards the game, since they put such a heavy emphasis on the animations, it slows down the battles a lot, turning each encounter into a 3-5 minute slug fest. As a standalone game, it is pretty good, just slow paced which can be kind of boring at times. As a pokemon game, it is pretty bad though. Theres no option to "catch'em all". You don't have the freedom to modify your tool sets nearly as much. It's a stripped down version of pokemon with a painful endgame difficulty spike. So, if you are expecting a pokemon game, this one is going to hurt your feelings. If you are expecing a JRPG, its pretty good, especially for a younger audience, just a bit slow.

Very tedious to play. There's less than 50 pokemon you can get, and what you can get is mostly defensive tanks that don't do damage. The Shadow pokemon don't show their Natures, so you can't reset to get better ones. And finally the movepools are pitiful. Most pokemon only get 1 type of coverage -- no move tutor, no move re-learner, and the price for getting good TMs is doing dozens or hundreds of battles. By the end of the game I was using a Mantine with Bubblebeam (the strongest Water move it could get) and just KO-ing the final boss's Shadow pokemon instead of bothering to catch them. The game's over, so it's not like I could use those pokemon even if I wanted to

The Story mode, variety of Battle mode options and amazing level of detail give the game an immeasurable amount of fun and replay value. [May 2004, p.119]

The aforementioned RPG mode is where we’ve found most of our time invested in Colosseum vanish. The darker-than-usual portrayal of the Pokémon world is an interesting and commendable change in style and the gameplay itself offers the player a substantially different experience to the handheld games.

This is literally one of the best games ever made. I genuinely believe the animations in this game look better than the newest pokemon games and genius sonority makes better games than gamefreak. This is the best pokemon game gands down the story is unmatched by any other in the series.

Trainer battle is the focus of this game. It would be a shame for Pokémon gamers not to experience this new style of battle, as it's fairly different from the usual Pokémon fare. Who knows, it may even sway older gamers with its decidedly 'older' look.

IGN
Even with the lack of gameplay variety in its quest, Pokemon Colosseum is one hugely challenging game, and it has enough originality, not to mention a whole assortment uniquely catchable creatures, in its design to encourage both newbies and veterans alike.

An improvement over its predecessor, though only due to the expunging of the irrelevant mini-games with an entertaining yet shallow adventure.

Electronic Gaming Monthly
The story mode in Colosseum is surprisingly dark (by Pokemon standards), but with its lifeless characters and endless torrent of dialogue windows, it's not quite the full-fledged RPG fans may be hoping for. [Apr 2004, p.130]

Pokemon Colosseum doesn't go overboard with these new features however. It's probably the least amount of innovations and updates that a game can get away with and still call itself a new game.

The first 3D Pokemon game, and admittedly, it was pretty average. I like that this game goes a different route to most pokemon games. Firstly, your character isn't the usual 10 year old blank slate character, but is immediately revealed to have backstory. There are no wild pokemon encounters, and new pokemon are obtained by stealing and purifying other trainers infected "Shadow Pokemon". These aspects are really good concepts, and really help to make the game feel unique. I really like these ideas, but they are not explored as much as I'd have liked. If there is one word to sum up my experience with this game it would be "tedious". Catching pokemon is tedious, purifying them is tedious, levelling up is tedious. The difficulty of the game means a massive grind is required, especially towards the end. I initially wanted to capture and purify every shadow pokemon, but I gave up interacting with the shadow mechanic about half way through the playthrough. The animations in this game are really nice, especially compared to newer pokemon titles, but they do slow the game down a bit. As is obligatory to say, the soundtrack is amazing. Overall this game is a bit of a frustrating one. The pieces are there, but the execution is not. I'd recommend giving this game a go if you want a challenge as it is quite refreshing.

This is one of those games that I just plain hate, and really the gameplay isn't horrible. I have this sort of feeling about this game similar to that of the narrator of "The Tell-Tale Heart" towards the man with the hawk eye. Something about the graphics and music and repetitive battles really just annoy the crap out of me. It also could be that my brother loves this game and won't stop playing it - and this really annoying music just keeps hammering into my head, and then when I try to turn off the volume I still see those annoying graphics. It's one thing to have the same thing happen over and over again with the gameplay (being the Pokemon battles, cuz I'm fine with it in other games), but something about this game pisses me off.
