The movie is packed with deep colors, glorious texture, and striking sequences, plus plenty of drone footage showcasing unspoiled, rough wilderness. Apex’s narrative simplicity (and the fact that it’s a Netflix movie) might lend itself to second-screen viewing, but anyone who lets their attention wander to their phone is going to miss some beautiful footage that makes this story seem a lot bigger than it is.

Because Apex is only interested in surface-level backstory about the characters, the pursuit between the duo can feel repetitive on occasion. Then again, prioritizing white-knuckle thrills over excessive emotion and explaining is one of the most refreshing qualities of this gorgeously shot picture about survival and fortitude.

The taut nail-biter is well-acted, crafted with skill and briskly paced, running a tight 95 minutes. It’s the rare breed of streaming original that can safely be called a real movie.

Though Apex's story largely just updates survivor-thriller tropes we've seen many times before, it's effective enough in its repackaging that it's certainly worth firing up on Netflix during a lazy night in. The physicality of Theron's performance, along with the film's vertigo-inducing cinematography, ultimately make Apex an adventure vacation from hell worth taking.

Apex fails to work either as a vehicle for sick thrills or an excuse for lots of feminist butt-kicking.

Apex mistakes going bigger for going better when what it really needs is a little more cleverness, either in how Ben operates or how Sasha tries to survive her impossible scenario. For a movie with some pretty ridiculous plot swerves, everything winds up feeling oddly straightforward, which makes the survival genre’s requisite catharsis and comeuppance land anticlimactically.

This is a mildly distracting guilty pleasure romp that is undone by its own casting crisis.

Apex is a frustrating mix of intense adrenaline and lazy writing. It starts strong, promising a deep psychological journey fueled by grief, but quickly abandons it for a cliché-ridden survival plot in Australia. Charlize Theron’s phenomenal, physically exhausting performance carries the movie, compensating for a lifeless supporting cast and Eric Bana’s wasted cameo. Taron Egerton is chilling at first but soon devolves into a cartoonish caricature that ruins the gritty tone. While the hostile environment and brilliant sound design build great tension, the film's execution falters. Terrible CGI, incoherent shaky-cam action, and a script that lets the villain defy physics completely destroy the suspense. Coupled with dragging pacing and an anticlimactic ending, it’s a fractured thriller that only works if you turn off your brain for some mindless, straightforward entertainment.

Apex is one of those films that works fairly well while you are watching it. It has tension, pace, hostile nature, pursuit, violence and a clear central duel that does not need too many explanations. It is not especially original, nor does it seem interested in reinventing anything, but it knows how to hold on to the basics of the survival thriller: someone runs, someone hunts, the landscape becomes a threat and every decision can go wrong.Charlize Theron is very good, although that is hardly surprising anymore. The strange thing would be to see her bad in anything. She has that physical and emotional presence that makes even the most functional material believable. She can be exhausted, wounded, furious or simply watching, and still communicate more than many films do with endless dialogue. There is a welcome physicality, an attractive use of the landscape and a fairly constant sense of danger. It is not too annoying, because the whole thing is well shot and made with skill, but it does leave the feeling that with this cast and this setting, something more intense, stranger or more emotional could have been made.There are also moments when the film asks us to accept too much without asking many questions. That is part of the deal with this kind of cinema, of course, but here some decisions feel a little forced. Even so, the pacing helps you move past those weaknesses. It does not get stuck, it does not stretch itself unnecessarily, and it understands that its best quality is going straight to the point.Apex is not a great film, but it is an effective piece of entertainment. It has tension, it is well acted and it offers a simple experience of pursuit and survival. Charlize Theron raises the whole thing, as she almost always does, and the film is easy enough to watch. Whether it leaves a deep mark is another matter. Probably not. But for an hour and a half, it does its job.

Follow a selfish, cold hearted, socially inept, emotional desert, as she shows 0 survival instincts and takes the advice of a stranger to set up camp exactly where he told her to. Somehow they made the psycho serial killer more likable than our protagonist. Cool action and a beautifully shot film, but of a main character I truly didn't care about, or even liked.
