Wallachia: Reign of Dracula8

On the surface, this game looks like another Castlevania clone. In fact, gameplay has more in common with Contra, it just LOOKS like Castlevania. I'd recommend this to anyone who is into arcade-style retro games.

This game is basically Contra done right. It scratches a lot of itches: The retro side-scroller shoot-em-up itch, the relentless violence itch, the killer soundtrack itch, the weirdo pet project itch. I'm glad I played it.

I'm a fan of twin-stick shooters and one-hit kill games, so I was really excited when I saw the promo for this game. Unfortunately, it looks better than it plays. I'll be generous and give it a 6/10

Okay, I get that this was a great game back in the day, and there was enough demand to port it to the Switch. Could whoever did the port put in an option to update the control scheme? It wouldn't even have to be the default control setting, I just want the option. Seriously, the only thing keeping mee from getting into this was the controls.

I think I would have liked this game more if I had played it BEFORE I played Inside (made by the same people). Both are good games that create very creepy atmospheres. My advice, if yor only going to play one of the two, play Inside. But if yoo plan on playing both, play this first, THEN play Inside.

I'm a fan of oldschool Tenchu, which is never going to be released on a handheld system, so this is the next best thing. Unfortunately, its no Tenchu. I'm giving it a 8/10 but its really a 7.5/10. I'm rounding-up because I do think its worthy of a positive score.

Jan 2, 2023
This game is everything I want from a Metroidvania, and the aesthetic is incredible. If there's a downside to it, I'd say that the game developer's should have bitten the bullet and instead of making the game about a made-up religion that resembles medieval Roman Catholicism, they should have actually made it about medieval Roman Catholicism - THAT would be blasphemous.

Without an option to invert the Y axis, this game is unplayable. I rate all unplayable games 0/10 by default. I have no doubt it would be a better game than that, but if I can't play it, then there's really no other score I can give it. If they update the game giving the option to change the Y axis, then I'll try again and change the score.

Dead by Daylight7
Jan 2, 2022
I like this game. Its got a lot going for it. The thing is, I like Friday the 13th a million times better. Dead by Daylight keeps adding more and more material, which is nice, but its just more micro-transactions, and even if I don't buy them, I have to update to accommodate people who did. Friday the 13th isn't adding any more material. Gameplay in Dead by Daylight depends mostly on stats, gameplay in Friday the 13th depends mostly on the skill of the player. Friday the 13th is a pretty good simulation of the movies, Dead by Daylight has characters from a number of different horror franchises, but they aren't really like those characters. For example, in the Nightmare on Elm Street films, Freddy Kruger does all kinds of creative stuff to kill them in their dreams, whereas in Dead by Daylight, he just grabs people and puts them on hooks (like every other killer in the game). However, Dead by Daylight runs more smoothly and supports cross-platform play, so that's nice. So yeah, I recommend this game, but its a soft recommendation.

Alien: Isolation8
Jan 2, 2022
So here's the thing, I LOVED the first half of this game. I'm a fan of both the Alien franchise and survival horror and this does both incredibly well. I especially like how this is based on the original movie while nearly everything else that followed is based on the second movie (which I love, but its nice to see the other represented). Unfortunately, midway through the game (and I can't pinpoint the exact moment it happened), the Alien's AI became incredibly predictable, and the horror aspect of this survival horror game vanished. What was left was something I was motivated to play through mostly just to finish the game. After all that though, I'm still going to give the game 8/10 just because that first half is extremely well done. In other words, I recommend playing the game until its no longer scary, and then quitting knowing that it was fun while it lasted.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe7
Jan 2, 2022
I'm not a huge Mario fan. I bought this because, when the pandemic began, I thought this was going to be the way to social for a while (and then everyone bough Animal Crossing). Its a fine game, not really my thing, but I have fun playing it when that's what other people want to do.

I'm kinda cheating with this one. I have over 40 hours on the game, 37 hours of which are probably on Sonic 2, I'd estimate another 2 hours on Sonic 1, and then about on hour on everything else (much of which I haven't played). I'm a bit disappointed that the Nintendo Switch version of this collection doesn't include Ecco the Dolphin. But yeah, overall, I'm happy with it.

Rogue Trooper Redux8
Jan 2, 2022
Its difficult to separate my love for 2000 AD from this game, but I'll try. Its a pretty standard 3rd-person shooter. Fun enough, but nothing special - UNLESS yoo happen to be a fan of the comics, in which case its pretty good. So while I'm giving it an 8/10 for 2000 AD fans, its probably only a 7/10 for everyone else.

LEGO City Undercover10
Jan 2, 2022
Grand Theft Lego, as I call it. I enjoy that this is based on original Lego products and not licensed franchises. Well, there are parody of existing franchises (particularly GTA), but the actual Lego sets, minifigures, etc are from the City theme. I was especially impressed with how the developers made GTA into a kid's game (the playable character isn't a bad guy, he's just undercover, etc). I like most of the Lego games I've played and this is one of the best!

With a couple of exceptions, the Lego games are pretty-much all the same. I happen to enjoy that style of game, so I like this quite a bit. Its just a shame that this game doesn't have anyone from X-Men, Fantastic Four, the Punisher, etc. That being said, they had Devil Dinosaur, and I probably wasted at least 2 hours just rampaging around the place.

The Sinking City9
Jan 2, 2022
I've played a lot of games based on and/or inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, and The Sinking City is probably in the top 3. I'm a fan of survival horror and certain parts of this game were incredibly effective horror. Things fell apart a bit later in the game (repetition became impossible to ignore), but I'm gonna give it a solid 9/10.

I have no idea how they managed to port this game to the Switch, but whoever they got to do it all need several raises. Yes, the graphics aren't as good as they are on other systems. It doesn't matter. The whole game experience is on a handheld system.
