The Procession to Calvary
80
LEVEL (Czech Republic)
The Procession to Calvary is a beautiful game full of absurdities and typical British humor, with whose sovereign qualities we fell in love thanks to Monty Python. [Issue#303]
This crazy, creative little game is worth praising for its originality and worth damning for its stupid story. The only way you’ll love this is if the author’s humour exactly matches your own.

For the most part the puzzles are well-pitched, with clues subtly seeded into the dialogue. [Issue#347, p.106]

It’s simply pure entertainment and a lot of laughs. The usage of renaissance paintings was wonderfully executed. [06/2020, p.48]

The Games Machine
The Procession to Calvary is a blasphemous, cynical and rad point&click adventure set inside a collage of Renaissance paintings. Brilliant dialogues and gorgeous animations are the perfect frame for Joe Richardson’s dark humor and his funny homages to the Monty Python.

Players who value length in a title might be disappointed, as it’s possible to get one of Calvary’s worse endings in about 15 minutes. Even diligently working through all the puzzles the “right” way won’t extend the campaign to more than a few hours at most, but to me, this matters little. The Procession to Calvary may not be an epic, but I enjoyed looking at it, playing it, and the things it made me think about. That’s more than I can say for many games that sustain whole weeks of playtime.

The surreal atmosphere of renaissance art, finds its unlikely partner in the unconventional comedy style of the Monty Pythons, and the result is… different. Gameplay-wise, this doesn't reinvent the wheel. Far from it. While very well-made and enjoyable, this is just another point-and-click adventure game - but it doesn't matter, because it's not the gameplay the thing about which you should definitely give The Procession of Calvary a go.

The Procession to Chavalry catches you through its fantastic and original art style (no pun intended), but even under its appearance there is an interesting point & click adventure.

Excellent and original point and click adventure game that uses Renaissance art for its graphics and soundtrack, and tells a funny story inspired by the best Monty Python humor.

Don’t let the art style discourage you. It’s a funny point and click adventure made by one guy. There’s a lot of jokes and some 4th wall breaks. Free on gamepass, definitely worth a shot. Ps. This game have some religious stuff, so don’t play if you are offended by religious jokes.

Short but very funny and charming. I'd rate it higher if it were a longer game, but for what it is, it's great. Very funny writing, would recommend.

It's shockingly short (2.5 hours) and ended just as it was starting to get interesting. The graphics certainly scream "Python-esque" but the humor definitely does not. I think I chuckled once during the entire game. There's plenty of opportunity for humor with all the bizarre things going on in the background of the paintings, but the game never puts them to any use. For example, in one scene there's two nude men wrestling on a dock for some reason. Click on them and your character says "It's two nude men wrestling". Try to talk or interact with them in any way and she says "I don't need to do that". And that's it. There's no joke here, no point, and no humor. And that's the game.

SummaryPilfer from pirates, conspire with cardinals and perform miracles with an incompetent magician. The Procession to Calvary is a Pythonesque adventure game made from Renaissance paintings, and a spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Four Last Things.
