Project Hail Mary

For all its bells and whistles, “Project Hail Mary” is also a lovely, bittersweet character study, a pas de deux between man and alien that elicits a surprising amount of emotions by the time the credits roll.

Lord and Miller have created a new sci-fi classic, an incredible adaptation of Weir’s novel, and a film that deserves to be a part of 2027 Oscar consideration already. With Project Hail Mary, Lord and Miller have crafted a film that’s truly out of this world in every possible way.

At almost every turn, Project Hail Mary attempts to convince you that it is groundbreaking, innovative filmmaking. But in actuality, the movie lands as a grand act of cinematic recycling – the fusing together of familiar, comforting bits and pieces into something determined to please crowds and warm hearts.

When you can sell a movie in which you spend a large chunk of time talking to a rock and still manage to be magnetic, you're doing something right. And in "Project Hail Mary," Gosling definitely is.

It is such a shame that momentum is allowed to sag as the film shuffles through six endings when either of the first two would do nicely. To that point, Project Hail Mary is a model of high-class popular entertainment. An explicit tribute to a Steven Spielberg classic in the opening third feels like no great overreach.

It’s a crowd-pleasing package, and Gosling is likeable enough to sell even the corniest jokes.

Maybe I’m too reluctant to let go of my reactions to the first trailers for it. But “cloying” is a hard sell at 156 often interminable minutes.

Definitely overrated and overhyped Firstly the film was too long. Secondly it would have been better if it wasn’t trying to be funny, I didn’t like the humor and the clumsiness of the main guy. The film didn’t make me smile or cry and I do cry like I baby on a good film. This was more like a silly family sci-fi in space. It wasn’t bad but nothing amazing.

Project Hail Mary (2026) May Disappoint Because of the Hype (12,423 – 04 May 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In the near future, science teacher and former molecular biologist Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is summoned by the German Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) to join an international task force in the Project Hail Mary that is studying the microorganism astrophage. They found the "Petrova Line", forming from the Sun to Venus, that is destroying the sun and in 30 years there will be a global cooling that will kill mankind. When the scientists die in an explosion, Grace is recruited to travel to Tau Ceti with two other crew members to study the phenomenon in a suicide mission. When the ship Hail Marry arrives at the destination, Grace realizes that he is alone since the other two members died. But soon he contacts another life form that was sent with the same purpose and a friendship begins. When the viewer sees the hype with a movie like “Project Hail Mary” (2026), many times there is a disappointment. That is the case with this film, for at least these reasons. Plot confusing; too long (2h 36 min. running time); moments where nothing happens. The good points are the beautiful cinematography and Ryan Gosling, since he is one of the most charismatic actors presently. Rocky also steals the show. My vote is six. In short: very boring. Very drawn out, very clean, the alien is, guess, boring. Void of real life and suspension. Family fun movie gone wrong.
