Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning10
Jun 4, 2025
What a movie !!!! Like several actions flicks in one. Edge of the seat and always exciting. Brilliant original extreme stunts. A long film but well worth it. So much creativity and genius put into this with a powerful ending. Even a tearjerker at times. Cannot wait to see it again.

Avatar: The Way of Water9
Dec 27, 2022
More engaging than the first film. A more emotional plot with such original images and ideas. A few loose threads in the plot but overall a fantastic experience, especially the final sequence. The underwater CGI was perfect making it totally believable. Had me literally cheering for the protagonists right through the third act. Very keen to see it again.

Top Gun: Maverick9

OK, it's full of military cliches, it's a bit contrived and hackneyed, but it is a fantastic rollercoaster ride. Fast paced and always immersive. I'm not a fan of this genre but I really became fully engaged. Great production values. Some unexplained plot elements, but, for what it is, it's great escapism and visually outstanding.

Nightmare Alley10

Visually impeccable and totally delicious, maybe del Toro's most atmospheric film yet. With flawless production values, it gives a brilliant insight into the ugliness of carny life and the grifters tricks. All performances were seriously great - Blanchett redefines 1940's noir glamour. Visceral at times, it probably could have been even more compelling at exposing the hideous underbelly of the fairground world. A fantastic third act ties it all together by bringing the protagonist full circle. A film to watch over and over to see the fine details.

I loved this film. Quirky, humble and intimate. Great acting and lots of English humour. As a child of the 60s I never knew I loved the Beatles music so much. The lead actor does a brilliant job of reinventing their music while ensuring that everything that was so special, original and perfect in their tunes and lyrics comes through. Certainly a film to watch over and over.

Loved this insane film. What a great homage to classic sci fi lines and concepts. Great performances and cameos.

Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood10
Nov 27, 2019
Loved every speck of this film - from the affectionate recall of the 1960s, to the extreme attention to product and lifestyle detail of the era, as well as the insane and original comedy that typifies this director. Hung on every second till the end and especially enjoyed all the tangents and sidetracks which made this a rich and magical trip to my childhood. Outstanding and exemplary. Great acting throughout. Wonderful cameos. Brilliant, extreme but very watchable and humorous violence which capped it all off. Wow !!!

Will Smith = pure genius !!!! Not sure why some dance sequences were sped up - looked a little contrived. Otherwise really good.

This is a perfect film. The first time I saw it I didn't get it. Watched it again and it grabbed me 100%. It has a unique magic that tests your suspension of disbelief to the max and at the same time offers a leap of faith. Have to say I ball my eyes out every time I see it. Like many men it is the story of me and my own father played out in a very different place. A rare film to be watched alone, with a hope of redemption.

A Star Is Born9
Feb 28, 2019
Deeply moving with an outstanding performance from Cooper. Absolute authenticity. The music is first rate and powerfully emotive. Lady Gaga delivers brilliantly as expected. Only slightly jarring thing is the editing - it jumps a little too much between critical scenes - without allowing time to absorb important plot points. Otherwise perfect.

The Girl in the Spider's Web9
Nov 12, 2018
Authentic, gripping, fast paced and impressive. A very worthy addition to the GWTDT series. A kind of james bond meets tomb raider vibe, with fairly savage violence and edge of the seat escapes. Have to say I loved it from beginning to end. Apart from a continuity issue with the bathwater I couldn't fault it.

Bad Times at the El Royale8
Oct 15, 2018
Visually interesting and almost hypnotic at times - this is a fun and engaging film with a strange who-done-it feel. Clever, atmospheric and surprising but maybe a little soft in the third act - the shocks and twists might have been more confronting. The flashbacks certainly give depth and value and ultimately help with the various redemptions. Overall very enjoyable with some brilliant photography.

Excellent movie - story was a bit convoluted - couldn't tell exactly who the baddies were all the time but nonetheless a fantastic ride with killer stunts - loved it !!!

The Shape of Water9
Jan 18, 2018
A very engaging film with all the hallmarks of del Toro's great attention to detail. Certainly a strange and intriguing tale which in some ways reminds slightly of Pan's Labyrinth. The performances are first class all round and the fact that he uses character actors who are not mainstream lends much greater realism and grit. A very satisfying film unlike anything seen before. A new twist on love.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle9
Jan 13, 2018
Can't understand any of the low scores. If you saw the first Kingsman then you know what you're in for. A fun ride with some never before seen stunts. Funny, sad, poingant moments. Unexpected twists here and there. A new and very different villain. Great tech and special effects. All in all a fantastic movie. Lots of laughs, over the top and very cool.

I loved this film from beginning to end. It was a total eye-opener. Heartbreaking but redemptive. Beautifully filmed with a moving and powerful, yet simple score. All the acting was authentic and engrossing. Impossible to fault. The end credits only added to the tremendous emotional impact of the story.

Independence Day: Resurgence8
Jul 5, 2016
Have to say this film was a lot of fun and very enjoyable. I loved how they captured the same look and feel of the original yet brought it up-to-date. Great visuals and excellent special effects. Maybe it could have had a little more humour like the original.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens0

What a let down.... after such great expectations and decades of waiting. No inclination to see future SW movies at all. Think I'll start enjoying episodes 1-6 in a new light.

Mad Max: Fury Road10
May 19, 2015
Wow - all those critic and user reviews were right - this really is the most amazing, authentic film to come along in years. What a non-stop ride - the stunts were beyond impossible and were clear and visible unlike most action films with lots of cgi. The soundtrack kept you on the edge of your seat and the visuals were wholly original and extremely gob-smacking. I loved it from beginning to end. This film is totally insane - you cannot keep still or quiet as the spectacle unfolds.

Playing It Cool8
May 11, 2015
OK I bought this at the discount dvd sale and expected a regular romcom, but I was surprised. This is a very original film with some quirky, clever devices. It's not the standard saccharin schmaltz you'd expect. This was touching, very funny, and quite heartwarming in a few spots, overall a very enjoyable film. It doesn't follow the same formula as similar films. I really liked the "smoking heart" and the two lead actors playing out everyone else's story. Lots of very original angles and a funny script with great use of the voiceover. I had to watch right to the end in a single sitting - a very likeable film with a host of interesting and inventive characters.

I was totally astounded by this film - such exceptional visuals and storytelling. As a Japanophile, I have a great interest in the history, culture and traditions of this amazing country. This film truly captured the way in which westerners imagine samurai reverence, obedience and loyalty to play out. Keanu Reeves' role was understated with a sense of great power in restraint, but this worked perfectly as a foil to the other lead roles. The sets and costumes were staggering in their scale, opulence and detail. The finale brought the story of this legend full circle by enforcing the nature of honour which is central to the samurai code. With the ritual act of seppuku somehow appropriate, rewarding and sad all at once. I did not expect this film to be so nuanced, imaginative, visually arresting and moving. As someone who loves visual effects, I was pleased that they were used sparingly and were subservient to the story, while still being flawless and original. I cannot rationalise the ratings given by critics - did they see a very different picture ?

Deepsea Challenge 3D9
Aug 8, 2014
This is a really engrossing documentary where James Cameron is simply the main character, and not the director. The 3D is excellent and much of the photography amazing. The film gives a fascinating insight into Cameron's love of ocean exploration and his drive to reach new horizons as an explorer. I felt the claustrophobia and inherent riskiness of his vehicle as it descended 11 kms. The story behind the design and creation of his submersible is both interesting and impressive. Clearly he has no fear when it comes to the deep. He is a true visionary and a highly disciplined achiever. When I saw this film, he was present and answered audience questions afterwards - like his films and his other achievements, he is quite outstanding and really multi-dimensional.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit8
Jan 21, 2014
Cliched and largely unoriginal story but highly engaging and very gripping during the denouement. A really likeable film with touches of Mission Impossible in a modern hi-tech scenario. Could have done with less camera movement.

The Great Gatsby10
Jan 3, 2014
This film is nothing less than a tour de force. Such painstakingly perfect detail in every scene. Even if you haven't read the book, it is a flawless piece of movie-making, so much more than the sum of its individual parts and characters. Who else but Baz Luhrmann could deliver such breath-taking imagery no scene is without impeccable attention to detail. The soundtrack is brilliant and original and highly evocative. This movie gets better and better with every viewing

Oblivion6
Apr 19, 2013
This really is a visual feast but that can't sustain a lightweight, lumbering storyline which is at all times vaguely reminiscent of some past sci-fi film (Silent Running, Omega Man, Moon). It seems to borrow bits and pieces and wrap them up in outstanding production values. Morgan Freeman reprises the sort of role he's delivered elsewhere, this time with limited gravitas. Brilliant CGI but little suspension of disbelief. The second half is missing some points of logic so that you come away slightly unsatisfied.

Pan's Labyrinth10
Apr 7, 2013
Six years since I first saw this but the imagery still burns in my mind. I always avoided subtitled films but this movie changed everything for me. Breathtaking, horrific, **** cannot turn away. You can't discern where reality ends and fantasy begins. Del Toro blends it all into a terrifying, visceral nightmare. All you can do is ride it out to the bittersweet finale. I cannot fault this magical, highly original experience. You will not see many films of this calibre in your life. Such a fantastic, haunting, wonderful dream.

The Hunt for Red October9
Feb 25, 2013
I love the fact that everything just clicks right into place in this thriller. A fast paced movie based in fact with excellent attention to detail. Probably not the best of submarine movies (with some amateurish animated underwater motion scenes) but overall a fantastic adventure with first rate acting by a great cast. Have to say I find it a thoroughly entertaining and quite gripping film. I re-watch it every year on dvd and still love it and am impressed by just about all aspects.

Man on a Ledge9
Feb 17, 2013
Have to say this film really exceeded my expectations lots of original angles and ideas plus some gripping action sequences. I like that it peppered the story with light humour here and there, and even though the ending takes a small liberty or two, it is a very satisfying rollercoaster ride. Great directing and strong performances all round I especially liked the behind the scenes elements on the dvd definitely adds to the sense of realism and attention to detail. This had a nice touch of mission impossible mixed into a ledge scenario which naturally offers limited room to move. Overall I loved it. Haven't before referred to other reviewers but Sickdrummer1 you are a genius. Well done.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World9
Feb 13, 2013
Really outstanding with great authenticity. The attention to detail is brilliant as is the acting. At times you experience the great discomfort of seafaring but always with a confidence that you are in safe hands, even during huge seas. Very watchable and most enjoyable.

Snow White and the Huntsman8

A gritty in-your-face version with some interesting twists and fantastic CG and full-on realism. Nice acting all round. Could have drawn more emotion from some of the later scenes but well done nonetheless.
Jan 27, 2013
Basic Instinct10
Jan 27, 2013
Basic Instinct broke new ground like no other thriller - it combined erotic, full-on action with great performances, sexy characters and a breath-taking soundtrack. Verhoeven ramped up his in-your-face style with original cinematography using new and different camera angles which were confronting but always highly seductive. Sharon Stone delivers an empowered performance unlike any female character seen before. She is hot, sexy, beguiling and enticing, with occasional unexpected vulnerability. The film is visually attractive and, while slightly predictable, takes you on a fantastic ride right till the last minute. Far and away the most powerful character is Jerry Goldsmith's brilliant, exceptional, original soundtrack - always reminding you of the risks and pleasures inherent in the storyline. His music is complex, fresh and daring from the opening scene to the credits.

Prometheus1
Jan 20, 2013
What a total let-down. This made absolutely no sense, and all of these so-called scientists acted like ignorant frightened school kids. There are numerous scientific errors and such impossible outcomes (running after major surgery). This was yet another cynical grab for cash from the Alien franchise - Ridley Scott is a brilliant director but he must feel embarrassed about this lame crock. Some major logic gaps and very poor characterisation. Watching it on DVD only makes it worse.

Inception9
Jan 11, 2013
A slow start, which becomes understandable on second and subsequent viewings, with a brilliant finish. This is a highly original film and the effects are outstanding. The pace is perfect given that there are several streams racing towards the ending. Apart from the overall concept, which is brilliant, the soundtrack of Inception is absolutely first rate - in the final scenes of the film I was on the edge of my seat - this is rare in movies these days. The emotional elements were exactly right and the music helped to deliver a magical movie experience.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey3
Dec 29, 2012
Very disappointing - insanely too long, with a slow, sleep inducing story, and cgi which looked more like a video game. The LOTR films raised the bar for brilliant make-up and great cgi, all within an emotional storyline with breath-taking cinematography and outstanding credibility. The Hobbit is a cynical grab for cash - why did the orcs, goblins and wargs look so cartoonish ? LOTR had a gritty in-camera reality which The Hobbit totally lacked. It should have been 90-120 minutes long but lost its way.
