Proving that its chosen genre is best when its tropes are treated with a balance of sincere sweetness and wink-wink absurdity, Playing It Cool thrives through sheer liveliness, as well as the chemistry of its perfectly paired stars.

Screenwriters Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair’s script feels like a first draft that was written in one night as they got pumped up on Red Bull and speed-watched Netflix. Guys: Another few polishes could only have helped.

It's a good movie. People's simple life, family relationships, interesting adventure stories, all these things are shown together in this movie. I like this movie. Chris Evans is a great actor. After watching the trailer, I wanted to watch the movie.

OK I bought this at the discount dvd sale and expected a regular romcom, but I was surprised. This is a very original film with some quirky, clever devices. It's not the standard saccharin schmaltz you'd expect. This was touching, very funny, and quite heartwarming in a few spots, overall a very enjoyable film. It doesn't follow the same formula as similar films. I really liked the "smoking heart" and the two lead actors playing out everyone else's story. Lots of very original angles and a funny script with great use of the voiceover. I had to watch right to the end in a single sitting - a very likeable film with a host of interesting and inventive characters.

Even in a self-absorbed role, Evans, who also exec produces, manages to be eminently likable, though the narration he’s asked to spew isn’t half as smart as the filmmakers think it is. Monaghan is luminous, and indeed, the actors shake every last bit of believability out of the thin gruel that’s given them.

If Playing It Cool is meant to be an ironic interpretation of what happens to these characters, the film isn't sharp, smart or insightful enough about how actual humans interact to pull it off.

Playing It Cool is a strained romantic comedy that seems to exist only to show how many talented, successful actors — first and foremost "Captain America" star Chris Evans — can be featured in one unworthy movie.

The New York Times
Proceeding with a strained quirkiness that infects much more than the names of its main characters, this first feature by Justin Reardon is a paean to the kind of narcissism that sucks the air out of every scene.

The Dissolve
There’s nothing clever or subversive about Playing It Cool, which makes the film’s overt self-satisfaction exponentially more infuriating.

Although I'm not the biggest Rom-Com fan, I really like the cast and I enjoyed this movie.

It was funny, entertaining and even if it was predictable, it still had a couple of twists. The acting was good, some of the jokes were actually really funny and the movie as a whole, was pretty good. It was a nice surprise. Even if you're not a fan of romantic comedies you will probably appreciate it.

At first I thought this will be yet another boringly dumb romantic movie, but it actually turned out to be pretty funny and interesting, albeit the story isn't anything new really but it had its moments, plus the cast is quite good. Aubrey Plaza was especially funny and stood out.

I found the writer/director sense of humor vulgar. Showing a baby doll’s head and potato’s dropping out of an unattractive woman’s underwear to be immoral and classless!
