What it's really about is taking a second chance to make good on old regrets and dead hopes. Never mind the baseball, this is one for the heart, made beautifully.

Despite a few wrong turns early on, the movie gathers graceful momentum and heads straight to the warm heart of the book - that fond spot located just on the safe side of sentimentality, a feel- good place that doesn't leave any feel-stupid fallout.

I just find this one kind of really magical. It speaks to lost loves and regrets. About not giving up on those dreams and those dreams don't have even to be big dreams to chase. The ties that bind us with the fabric of culture and society represented in Baseball. I think a one time big fan with a lost passion kind of gets this? I have seen indie creators build fields of dreams. It does make me think of better times. It's not corporate motivated or driven. It is the little guy and gal that reignites those forgotten passions for what was and what can be again. Which ironically was made by corporate Hollywood with a sense of self awarness.

This is a perfect film. The first time I saw it I didn't get it. Watched it again and it grabbed me 100%. It has a unique magic that tests your suspension of disbelief to the max and at the same time offers a leap of faith. Have to say I ball my eyes out every time I see it. Like many men it is the story of me and my own father played out in a very different place. A rare film to be watched alone, with a hope of redemption.

It's Costner's eye-on-the-ball exuberance that carries Dreams past its often mechanical aesthetic paces.

Ultimately, the film relies too heavily on consensual acceptance of baseball iconography as some kind of symbolic shorthand for all kinds of American values. These days, most of us prefer the NBA.

This movie reverie has an almost laughable '80s tone - a yuppified style and even language - that practically buries Costner. [21 Apr 1989, Daily Datebook, p.E1]

To be honest, I started hearing things, too. Just when Jones was delivering an inexcusably sappy speech about baseball being "a symbol of all that was once good in America," I heard the words "If he keeps talking, I'm walking."

Is there life after death? Many have pondered and this movie is one answer. These ballplayers just want to play one more game. And this field is where that dream comes true. A lot goes on in making this happen and in keeping it going. As of my review, the field is still there. I don't have a lot of DVDs but this is in my collection.

Kevin Costner brings the timeless, all-American quality of baseball into Ray Kinsella's life by defying all the skeptics, believing in himself, and allowing the audience to likewise feel the energy and passion for this classic sport. Field of Dreams perfectly embodies what baseball is all about and I highly recommend it for everyone, sports fan or not. Plus: Kevin Costner is at his prime and really good looking!

I am not American and therefore do not care about the great American sport of baseball. But this film isn't just about baseball it's about hope and the fulfilment of dreams. It's also about patriotism and the pride of being America (courtesy of a monologue provided by James Earl Jones). Despite being a very American movie this is a truly wonderful movie that everyone should see even if you don't like baseball (or America for that matter).

It is very true how corny and endearing this movie is. For true non baseball people this is probably a struggle to get through. Costner is great in it, performing and playing through how bizarre the script actually is.

This movie horrified me. Managing to be bathetic and trite while simultaneously being outlandish and grandiose, the movie fell from whatever place it had occupied on the shelf, to a despairing Gehenna at my deepest loathing. The acting was full of overextended, sloppy gesticulations and Wagnerian squawking, ineffectual delivery and spastic presence. The writing was sufferable at best. Truly a disappointment.
