SummaryThe four-part documentary series produced by Mark and Jay Duplass looks at the life of Elizabeth Carmichael, her promise of a fuel-efficient, three-wheeled car in the 1970s and the fraud case that exposed her past that included her life as Jerry Dean Michael and being involved in a counterfeiting operation.

Her trans-ness is explored with tender nuance; carefully extricated from the more complicated parts of her story and contextualized in trans history. While not the whole story, this is one of the reasons “The Lady and the Dale” is essential viewing.

"Lady and the Dale" is almost like embarking on a road trip; you have an idea of your destination, but it's really the stops and detours along the way that make it memorable, and that make the periods where things kind of stall-out easily forgivable.

This is a crazy story that I somehow had never heard of. It was extremely fascinating with many twists and turns, so it kept my interest for the first 3 episodes very well, although the last episode slows down a bit. Plot wise its like Donald Trump meets James Bond meets transgender **** within an unbelievable life story of this person. For any "millenial" or younger, who is probably not familiar with this story - I would definitely recommend at least the first 2-3 episodes.

The show works well when it's a true crime series about a career con-artist. It falters when it tries to turn said con-artist into some sort of icon, or trailblazer.

A fascinating four-part HBO docuseries, premiering Sunday, January 31, that tells her story with honesty, humor, and admirable sensitivity.

HBO’s The Lady and the Dale, directors Nick Cammilleri and Zackary Drucker (a consultant and cast member on Transparent) do right by their subject’s multitudes, presenting a rollicking and twist-filled bio-doc in four parts that doesn’t shy from Carmichael’s many flaws while supplying ample context for the transgender experience a half-century ago. TV’s longform documentaries are seldom so illuminating, or entertaining.

It leaves some questions hanging and spins on a bit when it comes to trans history, but “The Lady and the Dale” is undeniably a gas.

The first hour of The Lady And The Dale is a bit slow, but we know it’ll pick up once we get into the story of Carmichael’s marketing of The Dale and how it all came crashing down.

The Lady and the Dale thrives when it remains focused on Liz’s audacious scam, bolstered by first-hand accounts from relatives and colleagues who describe her as both a wily crook and loving wife and mother. For the majority of its first three episodes, it proves an entertainingly gonzo portrait of rebellious self-definition, as Liz strives to buck legal and social norms to make something of herself. Unfortunately, though, by the time its final installment rolls around, Cammilleri and Drucker’s series leans a bit too heavily into eliciting sympathy for its subject.

It's a very dangerously flattering representation of a person that displays the most megalomaniac, narcissistic, sociopathic tendencies that were embodied by some of the most ruthless evil butchers in history: Mao Ze Dong, ****, Amin Dada etc.... It's not because she is a transwoman, she should be given a free pass. Quite the contrary. If trans people want to be recognized as normal, they need to accept that some of them are as evil as other humans. She was every bit a conman as Trump.
