This movie began with some intrigue and showed promise, but like all too many horror movies, it couldn't sustain the early momentum. Ultimately, too many significant things are merely forgotten and go unexplained, it suffers from bizarre character decisions/behavior, and it leaves viewers with a plethora of loose ends and questions.

I came in with the “horror film of the year” buzz and, honestly, left disappointed. There are a couple of set pieces that freeze your blood and the craft is strong —disgustingly effective makeup, some unsettling daylight shots— but when it needs to sustain fear, it leans on shock and gore. That’s not the same. Rugna nails unease and harshness, yes, but he often confuses discomfort with horror: it churns your stomach more than it scares **** opening teases a rural folklore and a universe of “embichados” that could’ve been fascinating. Yet the rules never feel clear, the script lurches forward, and characters stack up head-slapping choices that pull you out. When the film explains its mythology, it loses steam; when it accelerates, it piles on splatter to cover the lack of tension. There are bold, bright ideas, but they don’t quite **** the minus side: uneven rhythm, talky exposition that punctures atmosphere, and a finale that doesn’t land the blow. On the plus: a few devastating moments, a lean, no-nonsense staging, and a ruthless tone some will love. I left thinking it’s more brutal than truly terrifying.

Mi país, mi país (Argentina) es lo primero que me sale decir pero dejando el comentario termo de lado hay que admitir que está muy muy bien esta peli. Qué más original que una buena historia local de terror (y las que todavía quedan por contar), bien lograda, bien actuada, bien representada tanto por los lugares como por las tonadas, la ropa, las palabras elegidas. Demián Rugna se ganó una fan más que va a estar ahí la próxima vez que decida hacer una nueva peli de terror porque Cuando Acecha La Maldad es increíble!

Some nice changes from the usual possession flicks poured by the dozen, but the pacing is terrible. There's no progression, no acceleration, just a lot of talking and useless scenes alternating with short horror scenes. Should be rerun through professional postprod to make it good

Hacía tiempo que no veía una película que me asustara de verdad, y es que When Evil Lurks es una historia macabra de demonios y locura, con los mitos del folclore argentino como piedra base. También me hizo mucha gracia la forma de hablar de los personajes, típica de Argentina, ya que mis padres son de allí

Esse filme é um filme de possessão diferente e muito bom, e a viôlencia é muito importantee bem feita. Recomendo muito

Nice take on possession horror movies. First two third of the movie are engaging and has some really fk up moment, i love the creators didn't hesitate in showing all kind of gory and taboo things. They try some good world building **** the final act the movie start to get more "normal" a lot more exposition, a lot more plot holes and convenient situation. Every character make stupid decision in this movie from the start, but at the beginning they seems to come out of rush or fear, while at the end the stupid decisions come from plot device or pure **** acting is good, but sometimes it was really hard for me to understand what that heck are they saying. I watch the movie in Spanish because the movie is Hispanic and a speak Spanish, but the voices are... bad recorded? It's not a matter of idioms or accents, its a matter of poor vocalization. Overall is a good experience, i recommend it for any horror movie fans.

Uno de los escasos ejemplos de cómo hacer cine de terror del tipo demoniaco, con solvencia e inteligencia. Se nota de cerca y lejos que se hizo el esfuerzo de ser lo más original posible y evitando los típicos clichés. Y eso se debe agradecer.

i like the concept but it try so hard but failed it has really annoyign sound effects the whole movie fell so messy and not on a good way compare to "28 days later"

I was deceived. They sold me this movie as if it were a grand horror film, but that’s not quite the **** script and the development of the plot and characters are terrible. The characters make objectively dumb decisions at various moments, and this happens with several characters. The movie presents many things but doesn’t explain any of them satisfactorily. I understand that not everything needs to be explained, but also throwing in various elements of the work’s mythology without providing any explanation makes the film extremely confusing. Furthermore, several of these mythological elements are introduced but either aren’t used in any way or are quickly contradicted by the movie itself. The only good thing I can point out are some daring scenes, but that doesn’t carry the movie at all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fui enganado. Me venderam esse filme como se fosse um grandessíssimo filme de terror, porém, não é bem assim. O roteiro e o desenvolvimento da trama e dos personagens é péssimo. Os personagens tomam decisões objetivamente burras em vários momentos e cometidos por vários personagens. O filme apresenta várias coisas mas não explica nenhuma delas de forma satisfatória, entendo que nem tudo precisa ser explicado, mas também jogar várias coisas, vários elementos de mitologia da obra e não dar qualquer explicação sobre elas faz com que o filme se torne extremamente confuso. Além disso, vários destes elementos de mitologia são jogados, mas, ou não são utilizados de qualquer forma, ou são rapidamente desmentidos pelo próprio filme. A única coisa boa que posso apontar são algumas cenas corajosas, mas isso não carrega o filme, de forma alguma.

I went in blind, didn't even know it was a foreign film. I was very impressed! You won't have nightmares but it was great story telling and very unique!

Um filme muito corajoso, pois aplicar violência gráfica como fizeram em personagens específicos não é uma decisão fácil. A história me pareceu um pouco bagunçada, mas aos poucos dá pra entender toda a situação. A trilha sonora é pesada e acompanha bem todos os momentos do filme. Um ótimo filme argentino que merece destaque pela produção de alta qualidade.

Mesmo não se entregando diretamente ao Slash, o filme não deixa a desejar nesse seu ar mais contido, pois de fato consegue manter a atmosfera cadenciada sem comprometer a diversão. A habilidade de Demián Rugna em conduzir sua câmera por aquela cidadezinha, e mais do que isso, de tratar cada personagem com certo impacto que poderiam causar (e realmente causam), faz com que esse seja seu melhor trabalho, e com muito a dizer pra estúdios grandes como a "A24" sobre a desnecessidade de ser didático. A trama gira em torno da crença sobre estar possuído por algo maligno, e completamente ameaçador para uma pequena comunidade, forçando laços que até então estavam a parte, como na relação com ex ou de outsiders e o xerife local. Afinal, estamos falando de uma ameaça à sobrevivência. Com certo desprezo e descrença no olhar de uns, mas também com um olhar mais cuidadoso de outros, que sabem muito bem o perigo que os tais possuídos representam, e na forma absurda como o espírito maligno passa de um a outro, a trama torna-se um exercício de estilo: não há aqui vontade alguma de explicar o sobrenatural, mas tão somente deixa-se envolver pelas cenas violentas, ficar à espreita de quem será o próximo a ser tomado pelo mal, ver as mortes devastando o elenco, como em "Pânico" ou "Premonição", sendo este o único elemento do roteiro que fará com que você não desgrude os olhos da tela. Tudo o mais é secundário à trama, como o fato de usarem crianças, mas também um elemento que não soa gratuito: é realmente corajoso o roteiro usar as crianças como algozes, ficou de fato assustador. E embora algumas mortes poderiam ser mais viscerais, outras soam surpreendentemente boas, e até mesmo abruptas no bom sentido, quando menos se espera o mal está ali, comendo cabeças, cortando corpos. E tome sangue! Não há, aqui, o porquê de controlar o mal, já que o objetivo de tudo é a mais pura dilaceração. É um filme que sabe muito bem o que quer, e o que quer mostrar, e o faz com muita classe. O choro desolador ao final é o nosso espanto, de tudo continuar sem redenção. Ótimo filme argentino para se deliciar com as mortes de forma um tanto quanto sádica, e como dito, quase próximo ao slash, mas segura o suficiente para não comprometer a ótima ambientação criada.

So for me it is a big disappointment, the beginning is boring, towards the end it starts to be a bit interesting, and the conclusion itself is again about nothing. There is quite a bit of blood, but that doesn't make up for the boredom, a horror film needs an engaging plot and it lacks that

'When Evil Lurks' is the Latin American answer to 'Evil Dead.' I don't know if it would be the most appropriate thing to turn this into a franchise, but the universe it builds is fascinating and worth exploring. Demián Rugna (influenced by titles like 'The Witch' and 'The Children of the Corn') gives us a regional interpretation of the folk horror that has fascinated moviegoers in recent times; top-notch practical effects and outstanding performances round out the experience. In addition to handling tension in a great way, the script incorporates pertinent sociopolitical and religious themes, from the authorities' indifference to fanaticism. The film, without a doubt, is one of the best horror films that Latin America has produced so far this century. The ending is one of the most pessimistic and terrifying I have ever seen in the genre. It's worth seeing it on the big screen.

If it were merely bad, I'd have forgiven it, but because it's a good premise buried in a terrible movie, I absolutely hated it. Wonderful lore. Gripping pace, mostly. FX a mixed bag. Terrible music. Annoying cast. Sloppy direction. Predictable. Shoddy writing. Clunky acting. Nonsensical character decisions. Amateur hour. Surprisingly cheesy and unlikable overall. Looks like a Ford commercial. Gore is meh.

Roteiro é problemático, com uma história que não faz muito sentido e personagens que são pouco desenvolvidos. O maior problema do filme é a sua abordagem da possessão demoníaca. O filme apresenta uma visão muito exagerada e caricatural do que seria uma possessão demoníaca, com cenas de violência e gore que são mais risíveis do que assustadoras. Essa cena é tão exagerada que é difícil de acreditar que ela é real. Outro problema do filme é a sua falta de verossimilhança. Se a possessão demoníaca é tão comum e devastadora nesse mundo, como é que ninguém parece se importar? Por que as autoridades não fazem nada para conter esse problema? No geral, When Evil Lurks é um filme que não consegue convencer. O filme tem alguns pontos positivos, mas seus problemas são mais graves. Se você está procurando um filme de terror que seja assustador e verossímil, When Evil Lurks não é uma boa opção.

It doesn't do justice to the hype created. Although it shows great promise when it picks up the pace, it is mostly a mediocre movie that lacks pace, wastes a lot of time and fails to establish the importance of the finale. Unfortunately average.

After a long time a fantastic thrilling unexpected movie that truly keeps you at edge of seat.

Very creative and a fun thriller, but the character's choices are VERY frustrating. Almost comically so. Fun to watch once at home for free if you can.

When Evil Lurks is a film that plunges into insidious, cruel and devastating horror. Despite some flaws, it manages to stand out by fully embracing the desolation of its narrative, never seeking to soften the intensity of what it presents.What I quite liked about this film is that it firmly sells the concept of what it means to stand up to evil. At least in the way a movie can.Here we do not find heroes who overcome the adversity and emerge unscathed from the situation. This story plunges into destruction and depravity, which I believe should be the norm when confronting demons who rejoice in them.While it doesn't take full advantage of all its elements and I admit that some of its main characters can be exasperating on more than one occasion, When Evil Lurks definitely moves away from the comfort zone and subdued horror that has dominated mainstream American cinema over the last decade - ahem, ahem, Blumhouse I'm talking to you - and manages to be quite effective for good **** you are looking for a solid proposal within the horror genre, I highly recommend this film.
