Greetings from Lithuania. "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (2017) is a big disappointment for me. I really wanted to like it, really, because this big budget mammoth is not another big budget Marvel flick. This should have been something fresh. Based on a interesting concept (very interesting one actually), given the acclaimed and kinda (sometimes) visionary director Luc Besson (the great "The Fifth Element" and masterpiece "Léon: The Professional") this should have been great. My oh my - "Valerian" is kinda of a train wreck. There were two big and only issues with the movie - but were so big, they kinda blew this movie apart. First the script. While the story itself was good and concept was great actually, the script was simply not to focused. It was all over the place. They should have focused on more linear narration. The second was Cara Delevingne. I'm not a hater, but you don't have to be a movie critic in order to see how stiff, wooden and simply everything opposing to acting this "actress" represents. How in the world this simple girl without any gifts (literally) could have gotten to where she is right now, is a mystery for me. Overall, "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" could and should have been something truly special, but it felt very flat. Simply boring, not focused script and some truly terrible acting ruined this movie - big time. Big disappointment.

Cara Delevingne is such an awful human being, i really really dont want to see her on my tv and hear her voice in my house. I feel emotionaly **** by looking at her dumb face. Both main actors are basically little children who should stay at home with their parents. How the **** im supposed to believe these actors are saving anyone or anything?

A film with a rather classic plot for its genre but well made in the development of the story and in the atmosphere and settings, which makes it a slightly above average film even if nothing sensational

It's too long. Great visuals. Mediocre screenwriting and acting. Luc should have gotten help with the script.

Valerian is a visual spectacle that’s bold, creative, and completely out there. The world-building is stunning, with vibrant alien cities and incredible effects stealing the show. The story is simple, but the action and quirky charm of the leads make it fun. Sure, it’s a bit cheesy at times, but if you’re into wild sci-fi adventures, it’s worth the ride!

Luc Besson delivers a spiritual successor to The Fifth Element that's equally colorful if not half as deep. Visually rich and mesmerizing on the surface, it easily outreaches Avatar as a sci-fi fan's wet dream; a slick, breathing conceptual powerhouse to rival the cover artwork on so many pulpy, classic paperbacks. The art direction is a smooth continuation of Besson's earlier work, too, drawing heavily from European design and comic book artwork to set a scene that feels at once futuristically familiar and unsettlingly exotic. Designs for the various species of alien life are similarly remarkable and unrestrained, as are the wildly different habitats that have developed to house them aboard one massive, utilitarian space station. The opening scene, set inside a cross-dimensional bazaar, is a wonderful mishmash of creative world building and original twists on action movie tropes. But then it gets to the meat of the plot and suddenly we're stuck with just another dopey laserbeam run-n-gun with a heavy, heavy emphasis on stale human characters and an over-reliance on CG. Forgive the constant comparisons, but it becomes The Fifth Element without Bruce Willis, Chris Tucker, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman or the blue opera singer to connect with the audience. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, wooden and flat with next to no chemistry between them, simply don't compare and the picture flails aimlessly without a firm leading presence. Valerian has humor in small doses and artistic vision in large ones, but without an equal narrative jab to match its creative haymakers, it falls quite short.

I had no expectation for this film, other than bits with vfx I'ev saw in trailers. I like the early works of Luc Besson, but this movie went below my 0 expectations. It was terrible. All of it's faults are down to the script. It's awful. It's perverted, with characters having constantly shifting personalities, communist and tribal systems being glorified, weird sexualisations in a film that only 8 year old and below might enjoy ( but will end up being messed up afterwards), and huge ecological bend. And I actually liked some bits in it, and really tired to like it because of visuals and actors in it, but I just wanted it to end. Really sorry to say this but it's utter crap.

Really cool movie. The story is simple to follow and interesting, the atmosphere and graphics are awesome. It's also lighthearted and doesn't take itself too seriously which makes it easy to watch. Absolutely recommended.

One of the few really well done modern non-dystopian science fiction films based on the comics by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. The film is visually stunning and full of surprising twists and turns. Above all, it is peppered with a lot of humor and great ideas. Every scene, every minute is a feast for the eyes and simply beautiful to look at! Above all, the performances of the protagonists convince with their simplicity and elegance. It is actually a well-crafted beautiful and dynamic love story of Major Valerian, skillfully played by Dane DeHaan and the lovely Sergeant Laureline played by the beautiful and gorgeous Cara Jocelyn Delevingne. The CGI's are in the upper area. The story is well thought out and masterfully executed on screen. Particularly noteworthy is the guest appearance of Rihanna, Rutger Hauer, one of the great actors of our time, who has unfortunately passed away and Ethan Hawke. Awesome! I've watched the movie 4 times and I'm always amazed at how well done it is! BRAVO LUC BESSON! BRAVO!

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is a science fiction film directed by Luc Besson, based on the French comic series "Valérian and Laureline." The story takes place in the 28th century, where the International Space Station has been relocated and renamed Alpha, a city of a thousand planets with a diverse array of species and knowledge from across the galaxy. The main characters, Major Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Laureline (Cara Delevingne), are tasked with saving Alpha from an unknown threat while also retrieving the last surviving "Converter" from the doomed planet of Mül. The film boasts stunning visuals and make-up, with a Star Wars and The Fifth Element influence. However, the film suffers from poor dialogue, inconsistent pacing, and uninteresting story choices. The performances by the lead actors, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, are underwhelming, lacking charisma and chemistry. Overall, while "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" may be a feast for the eyes, it falls short in storytelling and character development.

Unlikable main characters, cringe dialogue and badly-written nonsense plot. Still scores some points for the originality of the locales and the pretty epic opening scene.

Great looking movie let down by the two main leads. They both fail to impress in terms of their impact and presence, particularly Dane DeHaan who simply doesn't have the gravitas to pull this off. I feel as though Clive Owen's character should have sent him to tidy his bedroom instead. The movie has great sets and costumes and reminded me of "The fifth element". Unfortunately the story and cast didn't match up to it.

This movie is very good. Nice and rich universe, a lot of characters and could have a sequence. It looks like The Fifth Element, with unique characters and places. If you like sci-fi movies, you'll love this.

While I can see how the graphics might appeal to some, the CGI was painfully apparent to me, even when it wasn't supposed to be. And the leads had zero chemistry when we were supposed to believe that they did. I think that the writer/director wanted them to be attractive, kind of making the viewer think of Han Solo and Princess Leia, but it simply didn't work at all. I didn't hate the movie, but it's not one I am eager to see again.

I was entertained by “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”, but I managed my expectations going in. This is not a movie made by the same Luc Besson that made some of my all time favorite movies back in the 1990's, but it is still an enjoyable experience that is really aimed at a pre-teen audience. If for nothing else, watch the scene at the beginning where they are growing the space station. Without a single word of dialog, that scene tells an incredibly inspiring story. I like that the rest of the movie tried, I just don't think it ever achieved much. I probably would have been willing to knock the grade up a notch if only the two leads had some chemistry. I give it a C, if you've already seen the best, but you insist on watching a movie, try this one out.

Beautiful to look but don't let that fool you into watching this movie It's beautiful. It's very beautiful. Some of the visuals are even breathtaking. That's it. There's nothing else to the movie. The script and dialogue are physically painful to endure. The actors did what they could but there was nothing to work with. Very uneven. Difficult to tell what was supposed to be funny vs serious b/c it was just so poorly conceived and executed. I have a hunch that a lot of the dialogue was intended to be funny. It's an utter failure. So much money and time and energy went into making this movie, and for what? Our world is absurd.

The bad: the dialog, acting and writing. The good: ambitious size and visuals. Unfortunately the Bad out weighs the good by a good margin. After watching this movie, I like fifth element a lot less.

This film is like Michael J. Fox meets Indiana Jones in a galaxy far far away and in the process outdoes Star Wars and Star Trek both on practically every conceivable level by at least several orders of magnitude. Yes, it's a comic action-adventure flick so if there are any Oscars to be won they will be in the realm of stunning visuals, of which there are plenty. We have landscapes unlike any other. We have aliens who bear no resemblance to cuddly stuffies and action figures to be found in toy store chains. We have absolutely NO robots attempting to provide comic relief. And we have Valerian and Laureline, billed as soldiers but handling missions more like agents, trading wisecracks and innuendos and the occasional contemplative remark about the meaning of life and the nature of the universe. The criticism of the film merely confirms my general opinion of the modern movie audience. People say that the two leads lack characterization and chemistry and these same people will heap praises on Bourne and Wick and every other two-dimensional pot of offal being churned out endlessly by Disney and the rest of the industry. They'll say the dialog is stilted and nonsensical and then applaud films where there are two lines of dialog, primarily grunts, for every twenty minutes of blasting machine-guns and fiery explosions. Valerian and the City of of a Thousand Planets is a very entertaining film. It's fun. It's a bit of a thrill ride. It does a few things I haven't seen before. I absolutely recommend that you give it a watch.

A movie that leaves all kinds of potential on the table, Valerian is a movie most hindered by its director. While Luc Besson brings so much energy to action scenes and even throwaway establishing shots, he's never mastered the art of directing (American or English) actors. And the two leads here, Dehaan and Delevigne, are doing their best but are just woefully miscast. But the final nail in this coffin is the story, which is too unfocused and simple to garner much interest even as the universe it's set in demands attention. Worth a rental but unfortunately very forgettable.

It's a sci-fi film chock stiff with CGI and crazy sci-fi ideas. It's not bad just not amazing compared to other sci-fi films out there. I found it enjoyable and Valerian's voice was shockingly similar to Keanu Reeves.

A terrific imaginative take on the comic book. Besson shows us his most lively animated universe yet; a space opera that feels more ‘ a long time ago’ then any recent installments of that universe we all know and love. Muted performances from DeHaan and Delevingne and an uneven script may bog the movie down but there is still much fun to be had.

Go watch a shlock-y 80s flick like THE EXPLORERS. Rip away the charm of practical effects, run it through autotune, and ramp up the pacing to ensure that none of the story beats can land, and you have some approximation of this bloodless avalanche of screen clutter. When the first non-CGI characters exchanged a few lines, I wondered aloud whether it was dubbed. The actor in the titular role got stuck in a permanent Keanu impression, and the lead actress seemed likewise preoccupied with the mechanics of speech itself at the expense of expressiveness. An actor mandated by the Chinese government mediates the frequent bouts of exposition this movie requires, conveying the competence and good will of the People's Republic. There is a romantic plot thread that I can only describe in terms of my relief when another part of the story interceded. That's the movie.

My thoughts on Valerian: imagine Star Wars, but boring. That is pretty much what Valerian is. The visuals are great, I'll give it that, but the plot and the character development are mediocre at best.

You get 1 star for visuals and -everything else for everything else. **** this movie and the horse it rode in on. "For my Father..." at the end suggests to me that he did not like his old man. Just....terrible.

This isn't cerebral sci-fi. No. It's not even quality parody/spoof sci-fi. Somehow, the writers got everything wrong about how to write a decent plot. The characters are bland, cringe-inducing, and one-dimensional--especially the hero, Valerian. And the entire story sounds all too familiar with its tropes. The story is utterly empty. You would think there's no hope, that there's nothing we can salvage. But that's not quite the case. This film's visuals are stunning. Straight from the opening scene, alien worlds jump at us in vibrant colors and in creative environments. The scenes throughout the film continue to prove to be spectacles worth watching. But is the movie worth any more than its visuals and audio? Probably not.

I'm someone that gave SW: TLJ a 3 out of 10. This movie I give an 8 out of 10 even if it may deserve a 7. It gets an 8 or higher for the awesome freaking world building, the beautiful aliens, it's everything that The Last Jedi wishes it could have been. The two main characters show that tension between "men and women" dominance that pervades politics and something that The Last Jedi totally FAILED at making interesting. This movie was awesome. It did the whole "military complex" thing that TLJ tried and it succeeded. Just about in every category it was better than TLJ. I wish this guy made a Star Wars movie, Luc Besson (also did Fifth Element).

A space film with an incredible story of Valerian is really a very large issue, but it may sound like 3-4 films from this story, but it looks like some player choices seem to be wrong, especially the actor who plays Valerian is a very good player, but this role has been a little childish for a good fighting agent too weak and too small. The movie is another complaint, but it is a bit complicated because it is a little bit complicated. This complexity was a bit simpler. It could be an incredible film from this story. I think the film is still nice but not very beautiful

The plot was interesting, but the script was clunky and juvenile (almost like it was written as a translation) and the wooden acting on the part of Valerian and especially Laureline did nothing to save it. I loved the visuals, and the people in supporting roles generally were better actors, but even then, the writing quality was nowhere near the visuals. Sadly, this is a film that could be improved by redoing the dialogue and voice acting, so it may do much better in dubbed versions overseas if the writers and voice actors are skilled.
