It’s fair to say Washington has never quite topped this performance. It’s an unparalleled treat to watch him messing with the bewildered Hoyt at their first meeting at a diner, and then to watch the two men striding out to the car, filmed from a low camera angle. It is all thrillingly ominous.

Mesmerizing entertainment, but it's also a cop-out.

There's nothing better than a movie that goes straight to the point, starts strong and ends just as strong, some films don't need to overcomplicate things, they let the story guide everything, slowly pulling the audience along without revealing too much, keeping you unsure of what's coming next, especially between these two incredibly well-written characters. Ethan Hawke delivers a really solid performance here, but Denzel is on a completely different level, it's hard to imagine anyone else in that role, what really stands out, though, is the storytelling, it's not the most original concept, nor does it reinvent anything, but that doesn't matter when everything else is done this well. The pacing is tight, the filmmaking is sharp, the writing is consistently strong, great performances, and great storytelling, it's those simple things that make a near perfect film, Training Day is incredible.

Calling this just a “movie” would be an insult. From each character, the power dynamic changing in the last moments is what makes this film audience question what will be next. THIS IS NOT A COP MOVIE, It's the hero realizing the system is more than broken and the villain revealing it was never meant to be built. Yet all characters have a clear moral set at the beginning of the movie. Finally, towards the end, they all face an alteration of their beliefs. Overall this film is better to watch at “home than going to jail.”.

As exhausting as it is exhilarating to watch, the film in the end is less than fully satisfying.

Boston Globe
Even when it falls back excessively on coincidence and contrived set pieces, even when it gushes irretrievably over the top in its final act, Washington makes Training Day sizzle.

Film Threat
Bit of melodramatic grandstanding that it is -- is made irrelevant by Washington's volcanic energy and fierce conviction.

Washington Post
A taut, high-velocity film that departs from the action flick template by having actual ideas.
30
Chicago Reader
A blandly twisting plot with no meaningful revelations or substantial themes.

One of my favourite crime movies with a dense and intelligent story. Also the actors are top.

Denzel just doing his thing in this film. Ethan Hawke is incredible as well. Not enough love for this film. Training Day should be in the 80's range. Watch it. You won't regret it.

I finally saw “Training Day”. Upon looking it up, I realized that this movie is coming up on 15 years old, but I swear it looks like something that just came out. This tale is amazing. I don’t mean to say that it was full of surprises, because if you pay close enough attention and you have a good sense of how film works, you should be able to guess how the story is going to play out, but it still felt so fulfilling getting to experience it as it unfolds. Yes, it is gritty, and yes, it feels way too much like a template for the modern police brutality that is all over the news today. Also of note, this is the most stereotypical take on race in America that I have seen since the ‘80s, but if there is any way that you can look past that, it is just so good. If you don’t mind the violence, then it should be a no brainer to watch “Training Day”, if you haven’t already.

Denzel Washington had one of the performances if you ask me. A lot of people may not agree with that but he won the Academy Award for it. Ethan Hawke was also a great actor in this film. Great plot as well with a lot of twists. This is a must see.

Great film! Without a doubt an instant classic that could stand amongst the likes of End of Watch and The Departed as one of the all time great cop thrillers! Also boast one of Denzel Washington's best performances!

The only thing more dangerous than the line being crossed, is the cop who will cross it.
