Writer-director Jeffrey Brown may not be an innovator, but he has a poetic knack for coaxing the old roots of dread into fresh, cancerous bloom.

After a slightly rocky first act that succumbs to thin generational differences, Brown allows his slow burn to catch fire and doesn’t look back. You may be regretting not being able to visit the beach this summer. Maybe it’s for the best.

The way this film was shot was amazing, and I think it’s time for more ecological horror to be made

The is an interesting movie as the concept itself is kind of terrifying. The way events unfold is quite unnerving, as we're first lead to think it'll be a home invasion type film. But then it takes a strange turn as it progresses to night time and the 'fog' rolls in. From there the movie continues on with more starting and horrifying events taking place. However, some of these events come across a bit goofy in my eyes which is where it loses me a little. Overall it's a pretty average horror movie with an interesting premise that isn't fully explored.

In any case, it’s skillful enough to satisfy most viewers, if not quite sufficiently original in concept or striking in execution to leave a lasting imprint.

What’s mildly interesting about The Beach House, the low-budget debut feature from Jeffrey A Brown is that, while human beings have their struggles and conflicts, the universe doesn’t much care.

After a dillydallying slow start, Brown ratchets up the tension efficiently, summoning a mix of gross-out body invasion, eco-mutation and large-scale cosmic dread on a small budget.

The Beach House is a middling horror film with aspirations of recalling The Fog or The Mist but lacking the screenplay to come close to either.

The Beach House has some suitably creepy moments, but it's ultimately hamstrung by an underdeveloped script that fails to connect with the audience.

Not all films should make sense. I mean, I'd expect a little consistency, but the sense sometimes tends to slip away.
Something like this occurs with The Rental.
A film that initially looks like a couples drama but ends up becoming a horror story. In principle it might sound interesting but even considering the short length, The Rental is a story where only things happen because they must happen and then they end abruptly.
Zero story development and one-dimensional shallow characters. A recurring note in horror films of this kind. There's sufficient talent in Franco's craftsmanship, and it's going to be interesting to see if he can grow as a filmmaker if he decides to continue doing it, but he needs to make a better narrative management and most of all he'll need better scripts, because when the viewer doesn't care about the characters, nor the poor motives, nor the killer, well, there's very little left to hold on to. Is it a failure? Yes. There's nothing worth remembering in this film, except that it's Dave Franco's filmmaking debut. The rest is as ordinary as it sounds.

A timely and atmospheric eco-thriller hamstrung by a plodding plot where the slow-burn comes in the last act, not the first. Add a slacker boyfriend that is so completely annoying and useless it makes 88 minutes feel like three hours.
