The only annoying thing about Summer of 69 is that this is the exact kind of laugh out loud, emotionally satisfying, share-it-with-a-friend comedy that would probably find a sizable audience in theaters — and instead it’s a Hulu exclusive.

Bell (Kinda Pregnant, Brittany Runs a Marathon), who co-wrote the film with Jules Byrne and Liz Nico, has constructed a familiar film that checks the boxes of classic teen comedies. Summer of 69 presents a charming protagonist, her reluctant co-conspirator and a gallery of characters who support their antics and propel the drama.

Summer of 69 surprises with its blend of raunchy humor and genuine heart. What starts as a wild teen comedy evolves into a sweet, character-driven story about unlikely friendship and self-discovery. Smartly cast and confidently directed, it hits enough high notes to stand out in a crowded genre, even if not every moment lands. Bold, funny, and surprisingly touching.

i'm a big chloe fineman fan, and she was terrific. the other lead, sam morelos, was also very good. the movie was beyond stupid, but it seems that what was intended. in any case, because of chloe fineman mostly, and sam morelos also, i liked it.

Fortunately, Summer of 69 is a two-hander, and Fineman brings comic chops and genuine feeling to playing the tutor with a heart of gold.

If the movie’s adult characters are conveniences, its evocation of teenage yearning-slash-horniness (and the ways those can get mixed up) feels pretty real, even in the more outlandish moments.

It it will be refreshing when filmmakers stop going back to the well and begin to make newer observations about young women, making these stories feel more unique. In the meantime, “Summer of 69” is a fun, chill time.

Summer Of 69 doesn’t flesh out its characters, themes, or jokes with enough finesse to even rank within the storied teen sex comedy canon.

The best we can hope for is that Summer of 69 will open the door for more contemporary conversations in coming-of-age movies that aren't afraid to have more fun.

One of the worst comedies I’ve ever seen. The lead is totally unlikable - no interesting choices, no charm, no rizz. I get that she’s cast to be body and sex positive but she looks and acts like she bullies people for lunch money. Premise makes no sense at all. You can’t just flip a sex comedy and make it female without addressing that sex is different for women. Objectifying her male crush leaves as much of a hole in the plot and character development as when men purely objectify female crushes, making them the undeveloped goal of the quest. Flipping the genders doesn’t solve the problem - it actually makes it worse. Chloe Finneman as a stripper mentor also doesn’t add up. The least realistic depiction of someone like this I’ve ever seen. This would work if porn, onlyfans, and the internet never existed and it took place in 1982. But your main character twitch streams for a living. She would never be this naive. Did the writer/filmmaker just discover sex one year ago? Why is it all so at rift from any realistic or logical depiction of how dating, sex, and even friendship actually works? The sex shop, **** jokes, stripper jokes, all the jokes are hack. Nothing in the entire movie is funny. It all feels like a manipulation, not a story. There’s no emotional core or center to it. It was a complete waste of time.
