"Tony" does earn our affection, mostly because it never pretends Bourdain has. We are invited to view the genius as a work in progress.

We don’t get many great MCU movies anymore. That this is one of the highlights of the whole franchise feels amazing. And spectacular. And sensational.

It’s not particularly funny but some of the characters feel real, or real enough for this kind of genre exercise, and they earn our affection.

A tennis pro who plays pickleball — a trendy but less respected sport — isn’t amusing by itself. It’s an investment in future comedy that’s supposed to pay off at some point, and that future never comes.

It’s powerful stuff, and fans of the series will take away additional nuance, since we know what Aang’s decisions lead to, for better and worse. I suspect everyone else will find the film dazzling visually but undercooked in other ways.

Horsegirls never wavers. Every creative choice is confident and feels correct.

This remake never makes a convincing case for its own existence. Why watch the self-conflicted, contrived version of the story when you can watch the actual people, living actual lives, with actual consequences?

You can’t say Hollywood doesn’t make them like this anymore. Nobody ever did.

It’s not the smartest Evil Dead. It’s not the funniest Evil Dead. It’s not the best Evil Dead. But it is the evilest Evil Dead, and that feels right. Dead right.
