The raw, realistic war scenes are interwoven with delicate character emotions, a balance that only a master like Steven Spielberg could skillfully navigate.

I still remember watching this on its release in UK and I remember teenager me, nervously joking with my pals munching on sweets in anticipation only to turn around, literally seeing a group of elderly veterans, medals on display sitting stoically. We quietened down and Spielberg took us all for the ride of our lives. It still holds up well today in part due to how it set the terms for the now over used handheld documentary style of action movies and its subdued colour palette. I can't quite express but the experience was so realistic and visceral to me it just felt like I was inside the real wartime experience. This became the peak for the director and the casting, writing, vfx sound effects and overall production quality are all just the peak of what cinema was/is capable of in terms of storytelling. It raised the bar for war movies few directors have reached this again!

Greetings from Lithuania.
I can not really say anything about "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) that was not said before countless of times. I'm just going to praise it one more time. "Saving Private Ryan" is a masterpiece of movie-making, it's true. Almost no other war film can't take you to the place like this picture does. "Apocalypse Now" and "Saving Private Ryan" are the best war movies ever. Very different, yet very similar on the note of anti-war ideas. Now back to "Saving Private Ryan". The opening scene is ... well, you all know, it's a jaw dropping experience, and i mean, experience - for a 20 min you can partly feel what is war and how it was to a soldiers on that day. This scene alone is a excruciating masterpiece. The film settles then in to a journey through hell picture, it still remains unforgettable. No matter how many times you are watching "Saving Private Ryan", it grabs you from the opening scene and does not let go this the very last image. As i don't think there are people who never saw this film, i can just say, watch it again. It's a film to remember, and to learn. It's a masterpiece on all levels.

It tells a military mission set in the Second World War. The basic plot is quite simple but this, combined with well-made action scenes, not excessive throughout the film and a linear and functional development, makes the film really enjoyable and above the average of the genre.

Has the most noticeable movie mistakes I ever seen, despite of which it's still a masterpiece and probably the most important film one could ever watch.

I cant think of any negative about this movie. movie has extremely powerful scenes broken up by enlightening character developing and growth. the overall mission is not what is important in this journey, but the message is. this cast is star studded, with every new character as someone you know, and they do an excellent job.

Gripping, horrific first-person experiences in the thick of World War II, as you're already, no doubt, keenly aware. Saving Private Ryan has held up exceptionally well over time, most likely due to the great lengths taken by Spielberg and company to stamp it down in a specific era and remain steadfastly historical. The Normandy beach landing that opens the action is still as powerful and haunting as ever, an effects showcase like none other that puts us right down in the middle of hell itself. I couldn't help but pontificate about the futility of ground warfare here, faced with row after row of doe-eyed teenagers, unceremoniously mowed down before taking so much as a single step on enemy territory. Which is part of its message, no doubt, though that's somewhat countered by the tales of bravado, camaraderie and character that sprawl out over the ensuing two hours. A richly rounded war story, Private Ryan enjoys a mess of acting performances even stronger than the work of the effects team. Tom Hanks is at the top of the mountain as Captain Miller, a demanding role that he owns from moment one. Supporting faces pop out of the woodwork at every corner; most of us remember Vin Diesel and Adam Goldberg in early roles, but quick shots from Paul Giamatti, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston and more left my jaw agape. How did I miss spotting these guys the last time? A true war epic, profound and moving, with plenty of action but just as much character-building and adventure also in the mix. One of Spielberg's - and Hanks's - best.

A wildly overrated film. It’s 2025, and I’m exhausted by Hollywood’s obsession with World War II, as if it’s the only conflict in human history worth depicting. Even worse, Saving Private Ryan pushes the tired myth that America single-handedly won the war, ignoring the reality that the Soviets did 80% of the fighting. Yes, the D-Day landing scene is powerful—veterans have even said it triggered PTSD—but after that, the film fizzles. Characters feel like caricatures, their behavior often out of step with the realities of the time (including America’s own ugly prejudices that Spielberg conveniently erases). The result isn’t authenticity; it’s whitewashing. The violence is overblown, the melodrama thick, and the “grit” feels more like romanticized myth-making than real history. If you want something with more nuance and less hyperbole, Band of Brothers tells a better story with the same creative team.

This movie is good, and I love the beginning and end. The only reason this isn’t higher is because it gets kinda boring in the middle part. I don’t need to have 25 minutes devoted to how much we need to get Ryan back at the office.

I really do not appreciate Spielberg's vision of heartfelt. Thankfully, there is very little of that in this movie and his version of giant spectacle is amazing. The pyrotechnics and action are incredible and I couldn't tell where reality ended and CG began.

Saving Private ryan is a very human story about the normal people of the second world war who was sent out to do amazing jobs even if they were Ordinary **** Beginning scenes of the movie are heriting I have never seen a more amazing depiction of the Omaha Beach landings and it is **** camera is just so good and works well. It's amazing how much they move it and it doesn't feel jarring.I usually fist pump when I se body horror in a movie I really enjoy it. but in this one felt really disturbing and it felt real It didn't feel cartoon so I actually felt disgusted when I saw the guts and limbs flying **** the acting is top notch. It's just so amazing and well performed even Vin Diesel has a good performance in this **** can you be still be a human when you're asked to do inhumane things? I think this movie talks about it and I really liked the ****'s one of the more human films I have seen and it is fine second world war movie maybe it's even the best. I would recommend it totally.

Jumped at the opportunity to see this on the big screen again to mark the 25th anniversary. No clue how Shakespeare In Love won Best Picture over this at the Oscars.

Besides a couple of implausible situations midway through the film, "Saving Private Ryan" is a masterpiece of storytelling, set productions, and directing. It's my second-greatest war movie of all time.

I enjoy war movies, so this was an obvious choice. Finally, the classics are behind me. It was absolutely brilliant. Long, but it didn't bore me. It changed pace. One minute of action. One minute it's quiet. It would alternate like that and then suddenly it would be over and I really enjoyed these almost 3 hours, especially the action sequences, which I really enjoyed and I thought were very well done. That's what won me over. With its excellent action, which stopped for a while, but then always came back in full force. Story-wise I wasn't particularly impressed, although I liked very much that it wasn't a fairy tale and that it was grittier. The main draw for me was the aforementioned action, of which there was plenty. A great film that I can recommend to fans of war themes.

This movie is just stunning. The story, the effect, the atmosphere and the performances are just perfect. The pacing and action sequences are done so well. I watch this movie at least once a year and I see it as a tradition that will keep up for some time.

I won't bother analyzing the movie or picking it apart. I'll simply say; there's before Saving Private Ryan and After Saving Private Ryan. To see the impact of this movie try to think of a war movie afterwards that does not steal significant portions of Spielberg and Co's bag f tricks. Washed-out pallet, shaky cam, realistic gore and chaotic sound design have become staples of the genre now.

This is unquestionably the greatest war film I have ever seen! Every time I watch it, I can't help but cry, and just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. What makes it so exceptional is that "Private Ryan" seems to have understood the value of "EARN THIS!" and appears to have truly respected a dying man's request. Regarding the movie sequences All due respect to Steven Spielberg, whose talent makes it seem as though he was present.

It's a masterpiece. The gruesome scenes that accurately depict the horrors of war do make you realise how devastating a war is not just at national level but at personal level as well. The actors were splendid and I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen.

this is one of the best war movie there is. Tom Hanks was good for the role he played, everyone else did their best like he did. I love how emotional the movie gets as well. One of my favorites.

Ok, the opening scene of the Normandy landings is a masterpiece of directing. One of the best scenes ever shot. But from that moment till the end, the film becomes a sponge full of clichés, hateful rhetoric and pure exaggeration that make the desire to see it pass. Never want to watch it again.

This is definitely one of the more powerful war films out there, if not the most powerful. I will admit, when I first saw it at school, I found the first half-hour extremely upsetting to watch. The acting is outstanding. Especially from Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, and the music alongside Schindler's List is John William's most haunting score I've heard. It does drag in the middle and the dialogue doesn't always flow as well as it should, but what we have is a historically accurate, extremely well made and directed and unashamedly brutal film. I mean, in the stabbing scene, towards the end, my English teacher had to leave the room. It was like watching Frankenstein's monster tearing out Elizabeth's heart. 8.5/10 for a truly emotional and appropriately sombre war-film, that is a little slow at times. But it deserves to be in the top 250, really it is that good! Bethany Cox

Saving Private Ryan: When you have Steven Spielberg directing, John Williams doing the score and Tom Hanks staring what could go wrong the answer nothing. I really can’t explain the way this movie make me feel, everything has weight in it, if these people can’t save Ryan then their screwed. Everything about it is amazing the cast, everyone does a fantastic job obviously Tom Hanks is the standout. I have never seen Tom actually be in a really serious role, I mean in Green Mile he was still serious but still was a light hearted character but in this he’s full on more serious then I’ve ever seen. The score it’s John Williams obviously it’s amazing. Overall just go and watch this movie please. Ranking Masterpiece

There is no war movie so powerful, so special, so amazing, so impactful, so long but incredible, than 2 hours and 50 minutes of Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, it's not like watching a movie, it's like watching a real war with an amazing camera work that always follow the soldier wherever they go, we are like one of them but we can't do anything besides watching them in pain and die, Spielberg's did it again, making another Masterpiece.

2021 re-watch ah war is a meat grinder of men. No crap Sherlock, writers. Ok so what of the actual story? Honor, duty and sacrifice for the greater good. So a pretty formulaic war movie story. Just with a ton of gore thrown in all through the movie for audience shock and awe factor. However it gets to the point so many mangled bodies and bits all over the place the gore ends up oversaturated. I zoned out a lot on re-watch and tapped out when they found private Ryan. Sometimes the attempt at realism numbs the experience and it doesn't work on a emotional level. Like Hacksaw Ridge worked better, because the intense gore was only in the final battle scenes at the end of the movie. It built up the contrast of the civilian home life first. Then thrust the audience into the shock and awe battle scenes later. So no constant oversaturation of gore all through the movie like this one. Hacksaw Ridge showed it didn't tell. This movie did a lot tell with the characters backstory. So no deep connection to characters. The intense gore cannot the hide the formulaic war story with shallow characterisation. That being said "Thank you for your service". Nope not the actors, but the IRL vets past and present.

This movie does everything its set out to do. Nothing short of a masterpiece. I give all the side role characters just as much credit as Hanks for there performance. For the few that cant be open minded enough to see just how brilliant this film captures the feels and reality of the time and the place in which these events actually happened all i can say is maybe this movie just wasn't for you.
