I almost tapped out after the opening 10 minutes, by the overwhelming feeling that the first half of the movie was going to be nonstop college hormone theater, flush with drunk frat bro and rich sorority sis vibes. Thankfully the Axe body stench is only a misdirection, and the movie opens up to a succession of terrific gory scenes brought to us by our main character. Forget the sloppy plot devices, like how they repeatedly try to get access to a phone, only to do absolutely nothing with it or even completely forget where they are when they do... or the fact that one side of the family swimming pool is directly adjacent a 300 foot plummet down a cliff wall... don't let the sloppy writing interfere with the special effects demonstration in blood and guts. You'll watch it once, get a couple of chuckles and squirms out of it, and be done. If anyone ever brings up chimpanzees, you might remember to mention it, but that will be about it.

One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Terrible acting with absolutely no depth of character or plot. The movie made women look stupid being outsmarted and killed by a monkey (just being honest) I cannot stand horror movies where characters do things they normally would not do in a situation like that. I understand it’s the movies but it lacked any authenticity of any kind and I will never get that time back I wasted watching Primate.

Interesting look into the ape & human dynamics. Nothing too spectacular, only a high octane thriller

Primate is one of those movies that wastes time pretending it is building toward something powerful, only to deliver almost nothing. The pacing is slow, the writing is weak, the dialogue is awkward, and the overall experience is more frustrating than **** never becomes suspenseful, memorable, or entertaining enough to justify the runtime. Instead, it feels dull, sloppy, and overly self-important from start to finish. Easy skip.

Primate is a gory and tense horror film with the fun concept of a Pet Chimpanzee going crazy because it has rabies. The use of an actor with a practical costume for the Chimpanzee does massive wonders for the film. The costume is incredible and the kills are very brutal! What really brings this film down is the stupidity of the characters. They will not have one person keep their eye on the Chimpanzee or sometimes just stand around instead of HELPING or RUNNING AWAY! It can be ridiculously frustrating to watch and to a point where you just sort of root for them to die. Nonetheless, a decent 90-minute film that doesn't overstay its welcome!

What a complete waste of time. Predictable as heck, the movie suffers from a painfully slow start that fails to capture you and immediately puts the characters into a wall that they can't get out of. It's not worth it.

Primate is a thrilling and intense horror film that really delivers on suspense and shocking moments. The direction is sharp, the visuals are striking, and the tension is maintained throughout. While some characters could have been more developed, the sheer creativity and boldness of the story make it a standout in its genre. A must-watch for horror fans who enjoy adrenaline-pumping, edge-of-your-seat experiences.”

Primate is an uninspired, hackneyed slasher movie about a group of young college-aged girls and a few college-aged boys who party at one of the girl’s father’s mansion while he’s at a book-signing event as he is a famous author. The girl, her sister and her father own a chimpanzee. The chimpanzee gets rabies and somehow instead of simply making him more aggressive, he becomes a maniacal sociopath, methodically killing each of the teenagers. It is ineffective at being scary, and actually is more unintentionally humorous than frightening.

I didn’t like all that giddy teenage carrying on in the beginning, with all the lame and shallow characters to add to the annoying cliche that we see in every other horror picture. That was painful to sit through! Once the ball got rolling and things started happening it was worth the watch. As for the Chimp catching rabies? I find myself wondering why if someone was keeping an animal like that on their property why it wouldn’t be vaccinated to prevent something like this from happening?? I dunno. I live in Ontario Canada! What the hell do I know about keeping a chimp?! Mind you, I’ve known a few chumps but that’s another kettle of fish!

A film with no story! Whilst the majority of the acting is passable, some of its is poor. The direction is ok I guess, but the film is mostly pointless; it’s not terrible, but it’s in no way good either. It’s just a rabid pet chimp that attacks some annoying young adults. I wouldn't bother watching it again!

Primate was a compelling watch. The incorporation of sign language added a distinctive and thoughtful dimension to the film, enriching both the storytelling and character dynamics. I appreciated how the narrative subtly normalized nontraditional family structures without making it feel forced. While marketed with horror elements, the film leans more toward suspense, relying on tension rather than pure fright. The gore was effective without being excessive. Overall, it’s worth a watch.

I do think its solid enough and did the best it could its minimal setup. But even in 90 minutes you can only do the fakeout, fakeout, actual scare so many times.

I had a weird experience with Primate, the first half actually felt promising, and i kept hoping the film would carry that energy through to the end, and i thought the first half was fine, but at the same time, it's not the part where they should be good at, it supposed to be the part where Ben starts losing control because of the rabies, but instead, by that point, Primate turns into another generic B-movie slasher that feels like Jason Blum produced, where the characters are unlikeable and i simply don't care, a string of stupid, unrealistic moments, the worst part is, it's not even a Blumhouse film, which somehow makes it feel like an even bigger waste. I'll give credit where it's due, some of the gore works, and the way they use the chimpanzee, Ben, is genuinely impressive, both as a character and on a technical level, i don't know how they pulled it off, but it's convincing and easily the most interesting thing in the movie, there was also real potential in Troy Kotsur character, but they completely fumbled it by the end. Then there's a buildup issue, the movie relies on the same tired, mainstream approach to tension, dragging scenes out in ways that just don't work anymore, one especially frustrating moment where all that long tension build up is wasted on an off-screen kill, a bunch of bland, uninteresting characters are introduced purely to be killed off, and it feels lazy and uninspired. The last half, which should've been the most exciting and terrifying part of the film, ends up feeling no different from countless generic slasher B-movies, it just rarely works for me, i don't really get the hype, aside from the rabid chimpanzee concept, which is genuinely effective, and one interesting character choice, the film never builds on its strongest ideas and settles for something far more generic than it needed to be, Primate is dumb.

Primate is pure insanity from start to finish. It’s loud, violent, and completely unhinged. The movie is packed with gore, tense chase scenes, and some seriously brutal deaths. Logic takes a backseat here — characters act dumb, decisions are questionable, and the dialogue is far from great. Still, the movie is way more entertaining than it should be. The tension is real, the atmosphere is nasty, and the creature itself is genuinely intimidating. It feels like a throwback to old-school creature features that don’t care about being clever, only about shocking the audience. It’s not a “good” movie in the traditional sense, but it’s a fun one. If you’re into chaotic horror, bloody mayhem, and non-stop adrenaline, Primate gets the job done.

Bloody, dumb, and proud of it.Primate is exactly what it looks like: nonstop gore, brutal kills, and a constant feeling of tension. The dialogue is straight-up stupid and the characters make some really dumb choices, but honestly? That’s part of the **** movie doesn’t try to be smart or deep at all. It just goes full chaos, keeps the pace fast, and never lets the tension drop. Some stuff makes zero sense, but you’re having too much fun to care. It’s loud, messy, and totally **** you’re into dumb fun horror with lots of blood, suspense, and over-the-top violence, Primate delivers big time.

Great horror movie. Gory, brutal, and did not feel like the usual generic type of horror movie, which was refreshing.

Primate kicks off the horror season of 2026 with a slasher film that attempts to differentiate itself through its antagonist: a chimpanzee. The idea immediately grabs attention and, on its own, arouses curiosity, especially among fans of the genre who are looking for something out of the ordinary. Still, despite this unusual choice, the film follows almost to the letter the formulas and clichés that horror has been repeating for decades. The result is a feature film that works as quick and straightforward entertainment, but is unlikely to leave a lasting mark beyond its curious **** is a film that fulfills the basics of horror entertainment, but does not go much beyond that. It is sustained by its pace, its claustrophobic setting, and, above all, the curiosity of seeing a chimpanzee as the villain. Ideas about the conflict between the primitive and domestication, as well as the theme of rage, exist, but are never explored in depth. The film prefers to shock with its visuals and rely on the immediate appeal of the **** fans of the genre, it is a valid, quick, and straightforward experience. For those looking for something more inventive or memorable, The Ape will probably be remembered more for the chimpanzee's face than for the story it tries to tell. It is a functional slasher film, but stuck in its own formulas: effective in the moment, forgettable afterward.

"Primate" is a clever non-stop horrific cavalcade of tension, brutality, and absolutely killer practical effects. It's gets really repetitive and we've seen this type of horror movie before but director Johannes Roberts who previously made some really poor films finally has a hit.

The only good thing about 'Primate' is the creature: a great combination of makeup and Miguel Torres Umba's convincing performance. The rest is your typical slasher film in which a group of horny young people are killed off one by one. The lack of a proper story, other narrative devices to make it stand out, and characters who have anything to do besides dying make it the first truly bad horror film of the year.

Johannes Roberts finds himself back down the man vs. nature track with "Primate," a horror movie I probably should have trusted my gut on when I saw the trailers and TV spots lol. Not great, man. Good, creative gore, but to what end? There's basically nothing here in terms of a cast of characters. Nothing but archetypes: the obvious final girl, the dad, the sister, the friend, the crush, the **** one. Also, this chimpanzee get-up is too bulky, man, the head looks like a Spirit Halloween mask. The actor behind everything is doing a fine job, it's just so very clearly a costume is all. There's basically nothing given to the character of "Ben" either before the heel turn. One, maybe two scenes of "bonding" that really only just establish (and don't develop) a status quo. Lot of missed opportunities to using the sign language and soundboard to communicate with the characters throughout the runtime as well. Just disappointing overall.
