This was unexpectedly freaky given the premise. The main character, a shy, modest young man, Barron, has a huge crush on a female friend of his, Nikki, and uses this One Wish Willow thing to inadvertently cast a spell on her to “love him more than anything in the world.” At first things are whimsical, and they are happy together, but soon it backfires and she becomes pathologically obsessed with him. She also becomes belligerent and malicious, as the spell seems to have other unintended consequences creating, in effect, two Nikki’s, one possessed by a demon and one, the original Nikki, tormented by the predicament. As I said, the movie was more frightening than I expected and the performance by the girl who played Nikki was sublime.

Obsession (18) is a part supernatural part psychological horror. Bear (Michael Johnston) loves Nikki (Inde Navarrette), or thinks he does, though can never find the right words to tell her at the music store where they both work. His friend Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) thinks that Bear's idea of pouring out his heart to Nikki is lame. They all meet regularly in a bar for a quiz with their friend Sarah (Megan Lawless) who seems fond of Bear. Nikki tells him that she is tired of working at the store and wants to move on, meaning there is pressure on Bear to declare his true feelings before it is too late. This is a slow starter but it starts to rack up the tension - clingy or needy partners are nothing new in relationships but what we see here in the Ned- Bear-Nicky-Sarah quadrangle becomes more disturbing as the story develops. What happens when one partner invests more into a relationship and can't accept you not wanting them anymore? You just know bad things are going to happen but the nature of what does transpire is highly disturbing and in one scene I was expecting some fireworks and the tension became almost unbearable. I relaxed but that was a big mistake! A dream that becomes a reality and ends in a nightmare is a fair description of this film. If you like someone, just tell them, certainly don't resort to trickery or you might find that you don't like the results. When people say that they would die for you is this merely a figure of speech or do they really mean it? Be careful what you wish for!

I've never been a big fan of low budget horror movies but after hearing the hype behind this one I decided to give it a try - I was not disappointed! The whole setup is a bit silly, but thanks to a brilliant performance from Inde Navarrette and a clever script that plays into the idea of Baron's wish being a form of coercion, the film works incredibly well. Nikki is a disturbing presence whenever she's on screen as you're constantly left feeling something bad is going to happen, and there's a couple of great old school jump scares in there. Some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired (Cooper Tomlinson isn't great), but the rest of the film makes up for it. It's not as gory as the insights on the UK 18 rating suggests, which is a good thing for a film like this, as it concentrates entirely on being unsettling and scary as opposed to grim and gory. You can tell the film was done on a low budget but it certainly doesn't look like it was done on less than a million dollars. It was definitely a film worth watching in the cinema too, largely because it works when watched with a crowd. Definitely check this one out!

Let me just first appreciate everyone who worked on this movie, great Direction, Great Actors and Great Score(BGM). This Movie has such a good concept and execution of that concept was fantastic too. The background of the 'One Wish Willow' wasn't explained and that gives them a good chance of making prequel of this. This Movie Connects with reality too and god they executed it nicely. Throughout the movie you keep on understanding that the OBSESSION was not of nikki for bear but of Bear for Nikki and that he wasn't letting her go even after witnessing things, and even tried to Justify it in front of IAN and Sarah by pulling the DAD thing, It actually isn't horror in the sense that makes you scared physical but mentally that how pathetic a Wish could turn and a man can become. In the End i would just say i have great expectations from Curry Barker in Future and too all the 4 main Stars in this, i WISH they have a great run.

I like horror movies; they've always made me laugh because they're so silly and the characters do stupid things. But this is the first movie that actually terrified me...

Of course! Here is the exact translation: "Sadly, the film Obsession was very dull. The dialogue-driven drama in it was overly exaggerated. There was no real horror, and the acting was very, very poor. The music did not match the scenes; it was just randomly raised in volume to make it seem scary. The dramatic plot at the end was very bad. I regret watching the film, and I definitely do not recommend it."

Im not be a big fan of the dialog scenes that are exteneded, unrealistic between normal friends or try to add the quiet tension, but other than that I hardly found something to dislike. The story is pretty cliché but it was still very well made, I didnt find anything boring, and the few 'jumpscares' were nice either. I'd definitely reccomend!

Pretty solid writing, acting, cinematography, and the best horror movie of this decade. This film is also indie compared to big studios with a small budget, and yet, acting and emotion was all needed. People need to be more respectful in cinemas, however.

I see some of the reasons for the popularity especially for the Gen Z audience regarding aspects such as incel culture. It is also undeniable that the actress for Nikki did put up a rather great performance(not generational like Glenn Close in the similar movie fatal attraction) but still excellent. Other than that I did not get much out of the movie and it was rather lazy writing in my opinion. Instead of creating a legitimate reason for the obsession as they very successfully did with Fatal Attraction, they used a magic spell that went wrong which seems kind of lazy. Moreover compared to other films such as Bring Her Back, it is clear the motivations behind the erratic behavior, not just someone acting like a crazed lunatic the entire time. Moreover should not be advertised as horror as I did not find it rather suspenseful at all.

Terrible nothingburger of a script, full of clichés with horrible pacing and dialogues. Feel like a bad rip off of Evil Dead made by some cinema students. Nothing is scary or make sense, even for that type of movie. It's just cringe, goofy, and predictable. This movie is insulting to anyone who faced/faces mental issues and/or a toxic relationship. Bumhouse fails again, but hey, they make those for so cheap and make money on almost all of them, so they will **** multiple of them over and over again.

This is the horror movie audiences have been asking for for years. Unrelenting, brutal, so original, so genuinely unsettling and creepy that at times you start laughing because your body doesn't even know how to regulate. Inde Navarrette is a revelation. Michael Johnston is incredible too. The strength of the acting elevates the premise so much. At no point did I know what was going to happen next, and with each escalation I was terrified to find out. My already high expectations were surpassed by 10 miles. Just brilliant stuff.

An excellent movie, and in the most terrible of ways. It will go down as a horror classic with it's presiding concepts of desire, the corruption of love, and the old adage of being careful what you wish for. The presentation of the movie hits it out of the park with its dark mood, attention to light and setting, and an acting cast that generates emotion in every scene. For a simple concept, it is a complex movie with many viewers taking multiple things from it. My favorite reviews are from men who feel the movie overloads them with past trauma of their "crazy exes", or men who wished for love in the way the protagonist did, but wonder now if they would make the same wish once they see how monstrous it can become. What I do not like however are the many reviews I am seeing of women, specifically feminists, who seek to reframe it as a feminist propaganda film to fuel their paranoia of men. In their minds, it is simply an entitled man taking control of a women as his sex slave and **** her, even though that's not what happened at all. And they intentionally blur the line between fiction and reality that "all men would do this to you if they could", while ignoring how men who watched the movie were terrified to think of following in the footsteps of the protagonist. The only way to see the movie this way is through selective memory of the film, and a whole lot of "media literacy" from the gender studies department of one's local college. I encourage others to see it without such baggage and focus on what it really is: a movie about desire, love corrupted, and being careful what you wish for. All characters are victims of the situation, and all are deserving of empathy. Going into it with this mindset will allow you to take more from this movie, and it's glorious hideousness, than the simple narratives others would expect you to take.

This is one of the best movies I've seen in years. I've always been a fan of Curry Barker from his YouTube channel with Coop, so I was really excited for this movie. Genuinely insane. It's somewhat predictable and very basic but at the same time it's just horrifying. Ofcourse the acting is incredible as everyone keeps stressing. I was getting chills throughout the movie even with the movement and lighting, which is something I seldom notice in movies. This is one of the best movies of our generation and definitely the best horror/thriller whatever you want to call it of all time

It took 5 months, but I finally found my first 5 movie of the year. Obsession is flawless and for someone who loves horror, it is the best time to be alive. And to see that new, fresh voices are coming to the forefront with these movies, gives you hope that the industry is in good hands. Obsession has a lot of things going on under the surface. It is not just another horror movie. Imagine a shy boy, who is unable to express his love to a girl but ends up using a wishing willow to make her fall in love with him. Red flag, much? Well, that is what the movie deals with and it goes on to depict how people (men) can't accept rejection and move on. The star of this movie, the one who everyone is talking about, that most of your reels are about; Inde Navarrette is just phenomenal in every scene she is in. She is literally possessed in the role of Nikki and you are bound to get uncomfortable watching her creep out her "boyfriend". I have been watching a lot of theories about the movie and that is how I understood the amount of subtext in the story. There is so much to unpack unlike your usual horror movies. Curry Barker, you did what Ari Aster did with Hereditary; you have redefined Horror yet again. Obsession is bloody good, even with the cuts (in India). The performances, the eerie score, the subtext of it all make this first perfect movie of 2026.

Obsession is very well-made, but also a little bit overrated in my opinion. The characters are extremely well-written in the sense that they are effective. I don't think I ever hated anyone as much as Bear. There was one point where I thought: "Dude, from this point I don't care what terrible things happen to you." The other characters only have a few moments where they are effective in a similar sense and those moments work too. On the other hand, I didn't enjoy watching this. The directing is spectacular, but I think if it was even better, this movie could be in the hall of fame of the scariest movies of all time. It was terrifying, but only few of the jumpscares were really effective. The cinematography utilized shadows really well. The pacing is good, the production design is okay and the effects are convincing. The cast isn't famous, but perfectly effective. Inde Navarrette gave the performance of a lifetime. The wild thing about this film is that it was made with less than a million dollars. I hope the cast and crew get box office bonuses.

Heard a lot of good things about this show; apparently, it's a different kind of horror, which is yeah, it's true. The show for me is nothing special, another wish gone wrong show, but it's the execution that's the one that makes me stick with it. I would say the horror is not really there; it's more of an uncomfortable and controlling the one that makes me feel its hard to watch. To start, the acting is great; the way they show how they feel and the moment she snaps is believable. The lighting is great; certain scenes feel at ease because of the soft lighting, and some feel eerie because it's dark, like most of the scenes when the girl goes crazy; we can't really see her face. The star of the show for me is the writing and story. I love the fact that there is more to the One Wish Willow, like an entity that exists but is never truly highlighted; they just tell you they exist. Then the fact that the real girl keeps snapping is fantastic because that is when the real emotion contradicts the fake one. The writing for the main character is also good; it really makes me despise him because he's just a selfish guy that takes advantage of others while acting like he's innocent. Overall, not what I expect, but still great.

Creepiness and cruelty are used to plug every hole where cleverness is conspicuously absent. Barker seems to know he’s shortchanging us because the lovespell induces unrelated ‘Ring’-girl movements that serve only as distraction from the moral dilemma going unanswered.

Obsession is a very predictable movie. Predicted 3 important things that would happen in it. It's easy minded, boring and overall just a below average movie. The first 10 minutes are boring, the first interactions after the plot twist was decent but it was over used. This movie is made for people who just watch movies and don't think about it after.

"Obsession" is a damn near perfect horror film and quite possibly Blumhouse's best production. I distinctly remember seeing the original teaser for "Obsession" and instantly being intrigued by the vaguely described concept. With this film being Curry Barker's feature directorial debut, you would think this movie might be a bit messy, but you'd be very wrong. It’s always so refreshing to watch a horror movie that is made with actual intent, which is exactly what we are treated to with "Obsession." "Obsession" takes the concept of a "Monkeys-Paw story" and pushes it to its limits with suspenseful, anxiety inducing escalation and comedy that doesn't take away from the seriousness of the film. Even technical aspects of the film like the lighting, shot composition and music choices felt well thought out and purposeful. Hell, the film also handles jump scares impressively without having them feel forced or cheap like they feel in other horror movies. All of this is complemented with a great script, a clever well thought out plot with a much deeper concept than you might realize on your initial viewing and impressive performances from lesser-known actors, all created at the low, low price of $750K. As of current, "Obsession" is doing very well in the box office, grossing over $108M. Hopefully, this success starts some sort of horror series. Maybe we can get a few indirect sequels/prequels that involve a completely different cast interacting with "Obsession’s" magical focal point, The One Wish Willow's. My only real gripe was a certain element of the titular “obsession” wasn’t fully explored or fleshed out. But other than that, this is a movie EVERY horror fan should see.

It has some good acting but overall the world of obsession is hollow and poorly developed. The charachters are not relatable and the plot is a total mess. I'd recommend turning off your brain if you are going to watch this one. The RT scores really made me lose all trust in RT forever. Overall this movie is hot cah.

I enjoyed this movie thoroughly and it gave me a lot to think about. It holds up a dark mirror to that line been love and infatuation; and furthermore the role that self-love plays in approaching a healthy relationship. It's a cautionary tale through and through. It borders on psychological horror in the way that it takes the (initially) ordinary and makes it ****. And from there, it gets stranger. The two lead performances are outstanding. Inde's performance is incredible, one of the most memorable performances I've ever seen in a horror film. Her scene partner Michael is no slouch though and his intense vulnerability creates the perfect space for Inde to shine. The director was in total control of this film's tone. He hits genre notes effectively while telling a story that feels fresh despite the familiar set up (monkey paw). After seeing this and Backrooms, I am very excited about young talented filmmakers in the horror space. In the wake of 'It Follows' there became this new subgenre of throwback/modern horror film that allows filmmakers to pay homage to classic tropes but flip it in new interesting ways. We are starting to see young artists come of age now who have great media literacy, a sixth sense for classic technique, but a fearlessness to go into bizarre territory. Like a generation of Tarantinos. The future is bright.

Getting your wish is the worst thing imaginable in Obsession, a twisted take on love and romance that horrifies before going full-on horror. I appreciated the movie’s darkly comedic take on desire and relationships more than its gruesome endgame, but it’s a wild ride either way. Recommended. detroitcineaste

I really didn't like the centre framing, I found it distracting. The excellent sound design really stood out along with the phenomenal acting. It’s a bit of a slow burn but when it gets good it’s excellent. It has a simple story and I’m fine with that, it’s predictable but that’s also okay. It’s very much the characters that drive it. Really enjoyable, kinda reminded me of Hereditary (2018).

Cliche as ****. Dumb and predictable. Dont believe the hype. Making a low budget production doesn't necessarily have to be like this. I don't feel there's an original creative and visual approach; everything feels plastic and lacks visual identity. Very disappointing.

This is one of my favorite horror/fantasy films of all time. In a way the film feels like it could be another anthology tale for “Are you Afraid of the Dark” but if it was made for adults. The film is one of those horror films for a thinking person but in a good way; as it’s the kind of film that will probably take more than one watch to uncover more. But also, the kind you can play in a psychology class because after the film there’s plenty to think about and discuss afterward. There is a lot to love in this film from the lighting, really love the use of darkness and the low light which creates an atmosphere of oppressive danger and evil. This in a way acts as a contrast from the usual atmosphere for any romance film story where the atmosphere is usually positive where we see the couple most of the time out in the sun. But in this film, we never see Nikki and Bear out in the sun or even go much out anywhere, which in a way reminds us how the film is no romance, nor are they a real **** other thing is the music, which is great, from that song from the end credits “Forever” by “The Little Dippers” which is another in my list of favorite horror movie songs. Just like with “Mr. Sandman” for the “Halloween” franchise I’ll always think of the film “Obsession” every time I hear that song. But I really love the score throughout the film which adds to the atmosphere and horror as it has this very calm eerie tone to it; reminded me of the kind of music I sometimes hear in parts of the “Resident Evil” games. And of course, Indie Navarette whom I remember from “Superman and Lois” which is cool as it’s my favorite live action “Superman” TV show at least for now; she is just excellent. You wouldn’t think a person like her would be terrifying but after seeing this film you’ll think twice. Really love her performance as you really bought into the idea of a succubus demon has taken control over her. Part of what makes the horror in the film work is how the film really gets at the subconscious fears we hold when it comes to significant others that could be all wrong for us.t was the scenes where her face and body is in complete shadow overlapping her, where you hear her talking but you don’t really see her face clearly and when you make it out, she doesn’t look right, let alone sound right. This I feel gets at the subconscious fear that the person we invited to our life is a stranger. However, the real horror to me is in the character Bear himself, this guy I just hate to the core of my being which is the point as he’s someone you never want to be. Bear as we see is a moron and a coward, at least that’s what he lets himself become. It’s true that Bear couldn’t have conceived the “One Wish Willow” would per chance work at all as it looks like one of those gag gifts. However, the thing was Bear chose to take the easy path, instead of stepping up to bat to say what needed to be said to Nikki. And as a saying goes “The easy way, isn’t always the best way” indeed it isn’t, the minute Bear seals the deal, it’s downhill from **** of the things that contributes to Bear’s negative psyche is that he’s an inactive person. Not just physically as he clearly looks like he’s hasn’t been hitting the gym, but throughout the film Bear is sitting a lot, even when he stands, he barely moves much. From this it shows how passive he is in the situation and reality itself; but also how dangerous it is as it’s prevented him from doing what’s right.Another problem with Bear is how unobservant he is, which also adds to his negativity. From the beginning we see a medicine cabinet that is loose and swings. That little detail shows how obscured his view of the big picture of reality is, because of his unhealthy obsession with his delusion which makes him detached from reality. The “One Wish Willow” isn’t an accursed object, I personally feel it’s a gift from fate and the Gods. This gift gives you only one grand opportunity for whatever your heart’s desire. But like all gifts it’s a responsibility, because whatever you ask for is what you give yourself; Bear was irresponsible with his wish because he didn’t really desire love, but his own obsession based on the idea of romance Nikki as well as having her love him. Instead of romance and love what he got was a poor imitation of a relationship. A perversion of romance and love; no matter how long Bear is holding on to Nikki it will never add up to reality of **** film does have a good message and that is to never that the easy way to love, because by doing that you cheat yourself out of the reality of romance and love. Love, at least to me, is like the seasons of nature. It is something you can never force nor make happen; When two people feel the same way, it simply just happens, making it natural and harmonious. So, find and let love flow and never mistake for obsession because it could be your last fatal mistake.Rating: 4 stars

While Inde Navarette is getting attention for committing to the shrieking, I suspect the bigger reason this has become a breakout hit is that cinema crowds are loudly responding to the cruel, pitch black, bro-centric comedy here. It’s fun with a noisy crowd. As a microbudget monkeys-paw riff it’s otherwise pretty threadbare.
