Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children6
Jan 27, 2017
Kind of a poor man's X-men movie where we find kids with super powers but with a twist, they are in a different time zone. We have villains who are hunting them, and a kid who heard his dying grampa's request. Okay, not great.
Jan 25, 2017
Inferno7
Jan 25, 2017
Not as good as the Da Vinci Code, but I didn't read the book so I don't know if it's the movie or the book. Prof. Langdon wakes up in the hospital with a wound to the head and he doesn't remember the last 2 days. It was Langdon's deciphering of the clues that drove the story line of the "Code" but in this movie he can't remember squat. Not good. If the Da Vinci Code was an "A", this was a C+

Snowden7
Jan 25, 2017
Well done movie by Oliver Stone. Showed the man as well as the headlines. Gave insight into his life and how he lived his life. Question: at the end, you hear Hillary's voice saying he should stand trial and be punished, etc, which may have cost her votes with the target audience of this film. Is Oliver Stone anti-Hillary?

Bridget Jones's Baby7
Jan 21, 2017
Continuing the saga of Bridget Jones, she get's pregnant. But who, her old boss (who has died, maybe?, next movie) her childhood friend, a new American? Fine actors all, the story line is a bit pretentious, but you knew that already. Can I say, what happened to Renee? She looks so different, maybe older, did she have surgery? I think it's her cheeks; her face looks thinner except when she smiles, the cheeks puff out and she looks like the old Renee we all know and love.
Jan 19, 2017
Morgan7
Jan 19, 2017
Pretty good mystery/thriller. We learn Morgan is an enhanced human, why, we don't know. She has people around her to help her grow and adjust to society. A corporate inspector comes to check on her progress. Then the mystery begins. I thought it was well done with a lot of name stars; don't know why it was rated so low. And the twist at the end.
Jan 19, 2017
Hands of Stone6
Jan 19, 2017
Since I bet on the "no mas" fight, and lost, this was interesting to see what went on behind the scenes. To see where and how Roberto grew up was very interesting, similar to boxers in every country. I had forgotten he made a comeback and became a champion again. The movie itself was okay, the story much better.
Jan 15, 2017
Dope6
Jan 15, 2017
A coming of age story about 3 friends living in a tough neighborhood; if this was 60 years ago it would be Hell's Kitchen, but this is now so it's Compton in LA. Okay but too far fetched for my taste.
Jan 12, 2017
The Hollars6
Jan 12, 2017
Good interpersonal movie with many relationships trying to resolve their differences and conflicts. Great acting but the story (?) maybe a drama/comedy was the wrong approach. A drama with some comedic moments to lighten the mood might have been better.
Jan 11, 2017
Deepwater Horizon8
Jan 11, 2017
Pretty good disaster movie, good information on what went wrong with the drilling rig, good character development, good explosions, good stunts, Mark has taken his acting up a level.
Jan 8, 2017
The Magnificent Seven8
Jan 8, 2017
Pretty good movie. It's a remake but done differently, and I think with more character development. It's a little funny to see the forced diversity among the actors, but can't be sowhiteoscars.
Jan 8, 2017
Christmas Eve6
Jan 8, 2017
Christmas Eve? Could have been any night as far as this movie is concerned. We watch as 5 elevators stop and what happens to the people inside. Some of the people have ties to others, which might have made the movie more interesting if we found out at the outset, but it's a secret till the end. A character study of people's reaction to stress; you need to be in the mood for it.
Jan 6, 2017
Into the Forest7
Jan 6, 2017
What happens when the world as we know it, ends? This movie uses that as a premise, but it's really about the relationship of 2 sisters caught in a life changing event. Great acting, story good, a few "how stupid can you be?" moments.
Jan 5, 2017
Don't Think Twice8
Jan 5, 2017
Good character study of 6 close friends/comics/co-workers. They are the 6 Musketeers till one of them gets the dream job. Then the flaws start to show up. Well done movie if you are in the mood.
Jan 5, 2017
Jason Bourne7
Jan 5, 2017
Not as good as the first 3, but they were from books and this was from screenwriters. All the usual parts were there, car chase, bad CIA guy, killer on his tail, girlfriend from the past, flashbacks, etc.
Dec 30, 2016
The BFG6
Dec 30, 2016
A rather strange story about giants who live amongst us, this one giving us dreams that he collects in Giant Land. Maybe he's the Sandman. From that premise, we flesh out a story with even bigger, mean, giants and the BFG's relationship with an orphan girl.
Dec 30, 2016
The Dressmaker6
Dec 30, 2016
Don't know what to make of this movie. Seemed like a stylishly made movie, but the story was murky and not really clear on it's path. Maybe it was about life, and life doesn't always follow a straight path, but movies should.
Dec 30, 2016
Pete's Dragon8
Dec 30, 2016
Good family movie falling somewhere between the kiddies and adults. Of course, there are no dragons, right? So, we have the adults who don't believe the guy who saw one many years ago, but then a kid is found who has lived in the forest alone, maybe. How do you explain it? Magic?
Dec 26, 2016
Closed Circuit7
Dec 26, 2016
This movie has all the current topics, terrorist bombing, a trial, and behind it all, the British CIA pulling the strings. Interesting story, a little far-fetched (maybe?) but nicely done.
Dec 25, 2016
316
Dec 25, 2016
A basic blood and gore film with minimal plot and character development. The usual stupid characters do the usual stupid things to get into bad situations. A unique story line gets the film some extra points.
Dec 23, 2016
Equity6
Dec 23, 2016
An okay movie about insider trading and the people who are involved. What are their motivations? Do they get caught? We have 4 main characters who have romantic ties, old college chums, etc, and how this plays into what happens.
Dec 22, 2016
Ben-Hur7
Dec 22, 2016
A different take on the classic movie. While most of the elements stay the same, they are taken differently in light of Judah Ben-Hur's hearing the teachings of Jesus. As a movie, not in the league of the classic, but okay. I gave it points for the new story angle.
Dec 16, 2016
Dark Horse6
Dec 16, 2016
What a great story! 30 bar patrons chip in 10 pounds a week to breed a racehorse. And it only gets better. Unfortunately, the movie is not as good. At an hour and a half, it's stretched with filler. Would have made a great 50 minute TV show
Dec 14, 2016
Florence Foster Jenkins6
Dec 14, 2016
I have to ask, why was this movie made? I did not find any reason to tell Florence's story, and the use of her money to live a fairy tale life is an example of the excesses of the 1%.
Dec 14, 2016
Southside with You6
Dec 14, 2016
What an interesting concept, make a movie about the President and First Lady's first date. While it was very informative about the formative early days of the Obama's, it was overly long. What should have been a great one hour TV show was stretched to 1 and a half hours.
Dec 14, 2016
Finding Dory6
Dec 14, 2016
Finding Nemo needed some comic relief or the story gets too serious, enter Dory to provide that silliness. But can you make a whole movie about Dory? No, it becomes tiresome watching a story built on silliness with a little serious. It has to be the other way around.
Nov 30, 2016
Don't Breathe6
Nov 30, 2016
More of a thriller than a scary, monster type movie. 3 teens are burglars in Detroit; there's a blind man with a lot of money in his house, easy pickings. Or is it? Yeah, these teens think they've got it wired, didn't we all? Had to knock it down a couple of points due to the high school acting job of the teens, couldn't they get anyone better? or a director who could get more out of them?
Nov 26, 2016
Lights Out8
Nov 26, 2016
Great scary movie. I'm old and I've never seen a story line like this. The characters did some stupid things to create situations, but I give the movie extra points for originality.
Nov 24, 2016
Bad Moms7
Nov 24, 2016
Pretty funny flick about moms who act more like raunchy guys. I was surprised at the actors in this, Kristin Bell, Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith, they must be pals in real life and make films together. An interesting "don't miss" at the end during the credits, the stars talk with their own moms about raising kids.
Nov 23, 2016
Mechanic: Resurrection7
Nov 23, 2016
If you want an action flick to entertain you, this is a good one. Picking up where the Mechanic left off, this is a plot within a plot. He wants to retire but a villain from his past has a score to settle. Makes for more action, less plot, but that's what I was expecting.
Nov 21, 2016
The Man Who Knew Infinity7
Nov 21, 2016
Another movie exploring the mind **** and how he relates to the world around him. In this story, the genius is an Indian during British occupation so we have a racial stigma as well. Without formal education, he really doesn't understand why his formulas cannot be accepted without proving them. Hard to know genius from crackpot.
Nov 18, 2016
The World Made Straight6
Nov 18, 2016
An interesting story line about the Hatfields and McCoys type families and how their feuding and killing affect their offspring today. On a parallel story line, we see life in the hills today through the eyes of an educated descendant, and his attempt at redemption and understanding of his "kin."
Nov 17, 2016
Skin Trade4
Nov 17, 2016
A hot topic but a poorly done Kung Fu movie. Must have been financed by some rich Thai wannabes. The story deals with young girls being sold or kidnapped for sex slaves.
Nov 16, 2016
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi7
Nov 16, 2016
I remember the news reports when Benghazi happened, the military saying they were too far away to help, no support from Secretary of State (Hillary) or the Pres. Kinda reminds me of Vietnam stories, inept leadership. Boots on the ground are left on their own.
Nov 12, 2016
The Shallows8
Nov 12, 2016
I thought, okay, another Jaws remake, but no, this was a different story and a good one. As before, the villain is huge and unstoppable, this time the heroine is really self sufficient, no dumb blond. The chess game between them was Alfred Hitchcock suspense.
Nov 11, 2016
Morris from America5
Nov 11, 2016
Another teenage coming of age story. Changed the location to Germany to try and spice up the movie but I don't think it really added much. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, you've seen it before.
Nov 10, 2016
Indignation8
Nov 10, 2016
This is an interesting, different movie. Boy goes off to college, meets a girl, but something is off. It is in the search for "what's off" that this movie delves.
Nov 9, 2016
The Legend of Tarzan8
Nov 9, 2016
A new twist on the Tarzan story. We see Lord Greystoke in the present and see the past through flashbacks. If this is the first Tarzan movie you've seen, it could be confusing. Like Star Wars or Harry Potter, you are expected to have seen the preceding movies and know what is going on. Kudos to this one with a new story, not a rehash. Jane gets an extra point for being an ass kicker in her own right.
Nov 7, 2016
Deathgasm6
Nov 7, 2016
Bloody, gory movie meets teen death metal story meets typical awkward high school boy meets prettiest girl in school film. What a mash up! Guess if I was 50 years younger I would have given it a higher score.
Nov 5, 2016
Money Monster7
Nov 5, 2016
Well, we see a disgruntled man who lost his nest egg on the stock market. Hello, hasn't he heard playing the stock market is like gambling at Vegas? Do Americans really put their money down without knowing how to play the game? Well, okay, they do. So this movie is really a character study about the TV "market guru" and his producer and their on air repartee. The rest of the plot we've seen in countless other movies.
Nov 3, 2016
Experimenter8
Nov 3, 2016
I remember taking Psych 101 in college, fascinating stuff, this movie brings it to life. There is also the question of the German people murdering 10 million people during WW2. How could they do it? Was it just bad people? Or were they somehow "mind" controlled? This movie shows how this professor delved into people's psyche to see how we tick. Very revealing.
Nov 3, 2016
Imperium8
Nov 3, 2016
Wow, what a trip down the dark side. So, what are white supremacists all about? What are they planning? Why do they think that way? This movies delves into that world and turns a typical undercover police story into a trip down a really dark alley. Extra points for that.
Nov 2, 2016
Star Trek Beyond8
Nov 2, 2016
Not your usual space adventure. Kirk, Spock, the crew have new thoughts about life and their purpose after the initial glow of "going where no man has gone before" wears off. This was a twist on the old TV show where the good guys always won. There were ties to the previous movies, which give it the continuity that Trekkies love. Don't know if I like the ending, it was almost a send off, like this was the last Star Trek with this cast.
Oct 30, 2016
The Duel7
Oct 30, 2016
The movie starts out like your typical western, dead bodies washing down the river, a Texas Ranger is assigned to find out why, but then it goes sideways and adds in a dose of supernatural happenings. I have to give it some extra points for original story.
Oct 29, 2016
Approaching the Unknown5
Oct 29, 2016
More of a study of a man in isolation and what's going through his mind. The story of his flying to Mars to begin colonization is murky at best. Why have this expensive spaceship and send one person? Why is there a second spaceship following him? What's he going to do once he gets there? Unsatisfying; a good premise to start the movie but it doesn't go anywhere after that.
Oct 28, 2016
A Perfect Day8
Oct 28, 2016
No matter how hard you try, good intentions are always punished. The ironic title is symbolic of the efforts of 4 people trying to do good during the war in the Balkans, but running into roadblocks, real and perceived. For people who have never worked for the Federal Government, you cannot believe how much this is like our daily jobs (rules, regulations, and management.) I had to give it extra points for that.
Oct 26, 2016
Nerve8
Oct 26, 2016
Everybody loves these Internet games, the Pokemon craze showed that in real life. So this story was not that far from reality. It might not be long before the computers will be able to do something similar, and everyone carries a cell phone, and now we have Wi-Fi. I liked the story line of the girl and her friends, and the mystery man. I'll give it extra points for original story.
Oct 26, 2016
Central Intelligence7
Oct 26, 2016
An interesting movie on so many levels. Bullying kids in school, the pressure of being the kid most likely to succeed, spying by the CIA, stolen secrets, and how much people change from teenager to mid-life adult. Dwayne and Kevin are a miss-matched pair in these rolls and it makes the movie more hilarious.
Oct 23, 2016
Café Society6
Oct 23, 2016
Another Woody Allen movie, frenetic dialogue (like Woody when he acted) by Jesse Eisenberg, a love triangle, unrequited love, all the themes presented on a backdrop of the Hollywood scene that Woody hates so much, with the promise of a wonderful life in Manhattan, which Woody loves. Is this a semi-autobiographic story? Hmmm, the kid is from a Jewish family in Brooklyn....
Oct 22, 2016
Our Kind of Traitor7
Oct 22, 2016
The movie starts out well. Englishman accepts a memory stick from a Russian mobster. Of course, you should never do that, could be a trap, now you are carrying Russian state secrets, you are a CIA spy, yada yada yada. Okay, we're past that, MI-6 thinks the Russian is real, can the Englishman get more involved. Wow, every teacher's vacation fantasy, be a spy. Okay, but then the story really gets out of hand and unbelievable, so I had to take points off. It was good while it lasted.
Oct 21, 2016
Are You Here5
Oct 21, 2016
I wasn't sure if this was a comedy or a drama. It was as if comics wanted to play serious roles and they all got together and made a movie. Not much to the story line, the movie didn't go very deep into the characters lives, just light entertainment.
