Trollhunters: Defender of Arcadia is a dull but mostly serviceable throwback to an era of gaming where licensed 2D platformers were rife. Decent writing and acting do help it stand out, but not by much.

Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia, like many other games that are adopted from movies and tv series, is a weak title made to take financial advantage of the Trollhunter name. Not recommended even to the fans of the series.

Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia is a game that knows it audience and caters to it. It stays true to the story and delivers an okay yet shorter experience that I’m sure kids and fans of the show will enjoy.

If I could use single words to describe this trash they would be...ATROCIOUS...NAUSEATING...PATHETIC...IRRELEVANT. This game is so bad, I wonder if the actual TV series are just as vomit-inducing. This game is SO bad, how can children bear with it, never mind adults!? Educational you say?!?! If this is the state of modern-day education (sordid story telling in place of growth and development-based fun), then God help our future generations! This game is SOOOOO BAD, that people would have more fun hammering nails into a coffee table or watching paint dry. The graphics seem worse than PS1-era games, the dialogue seems ok but cringe-worthy in most places (and get this, they could'nt even be bothered to use animation/3D models during the talking) and don't get me worked up about the actual gameplay...I have been more ecstatic about peeling paint using a butter knife, than I have been about hitting (yes hitting, not fighting) the blobs and sticks that are meant to resemble the enemies in this money-making scheme ****. And smelly socks? As collectibles??!?! Do these guys move around with a recycling bin over their heads??!! I would not normally score a game zero, but this really has let me down on all fronts...there is no saving grace for this awful, awful, AWFUL game...I did hear that most cartoon-based games were terrible, BUT NOT THIS TERRIBLE!

Troll Hunters: Defenders of Arcadia is a 2D Hack-and-Slash action Platformer. Based on the Netflix original Dreamworks Series, this game marks it's first venture to the consoles. Even having knowledge of the series, the story was lacking, and any time you add Time travel to a story line, you raise issues... The usual issue in time travel seem to have been kept to a minimum, but I'm sure hardcore fans, and those familiar with all the lore would find all the oddities and inconsistencies time travel in an already established time brings. But enough about the story, as i can't tell you much more without spoilers. The game play isn't fantastic, and lacks variety. The enemies you face with the exception of Bosses (and minimally here) don't actually pose much of a threat, and can be dispatched with your repetitive 3 swing sword combo. You do unlock a projectile fairly early, but it proves to be mostly useless against most enemies. Along the way you do unlock a few support abilities, but their uses are fairly limited, and mostly have to do with navigation. Younger fans of the series may get more enjoyment out of the game, as it's basic enough to be a great introduction to the genre for new players. Troll Hunters: DOA (I just realized these initials) isn't as engaging as the series, and a lot of the story is easily lost if you aren't familiar with the show.

I’m of the opinion that you should score a game for the audience it’s made for, and Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia on Xbox One is a pre-teen game that delivers on what its audience wants. It’s a brisk romp through all of the best characters and locations in the game, with barely a hiccup along the way. What it sacrifices in complexity or any kind of innovation, it gains in player-friendliness and an adventure that - for the kids in this house, anyway - will make them want to hack, slash and jump all the way to the end.

You might enjoy Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia if you're a fan of the show but even if you are, there's no denying just how unchallenging and unrefined of an experience it is. Here's hoping that a much better Trollhunters game is made down the road.

As far as platform games go, there are much better titles out there than Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia. It’s let down by uninspired visuals, and a combat system that just isn’t fun. If you’re a fan of the Dreamworks series, then you might get a bit more joy out of it, but for everyone else it’s a rather humdrum platformer. It works, but that’s about it.
