The battle system rocks. Not quite real-time, not quite turn-based, but somewhere in-between, KOTOR's battle engine offers tremendous depth while being intimately adjustable. [Sept 2003, p.78]

It's a luminous use of an indelible vehicle, and it deserves to be held aloft; suitably accorded the very best nomenclature in Gamestyle's vocabulary. A Ten, then.

It isn't one thing that makes Knights of the Old Republic such a masterful RPG, but a remarkable amalgamation of brilliant gameplay elements, jaw-dropping presentation and a huge helping of that special Star Wars magic.

Same greatness as in PC version. One of the best games and surely the best game about star wars. Value to play the game again since your choices alter the story and ending. Nothing negative about the Switch version.

A pizza, a fridge full of sodas, a controller and a free weekend had me hooked on this Star Wars roleplaying chapter of a whole new era in Lucas' universe! Absolutely loved every chapter of the story. The intrigue and plot development kept me hooked right up to the end! Even 20+ years later this is still a great game and I can't for the life of me understand why this hasn't had at least 1 remake to bring it up to a current gen console!

Fantastic story put in a fantastic universe, somehow feeling more fleshed out and reasonable than the originators attempts

If you're a fan of Star Wars, you NEED to purchase this title. The gameplay experience proves to be as deep as the engrossing story and wonderful script.

It really is storytelling at its best, without coming across too contrived at any point and opens up the bridge between watching a story, and participating in it.

Deserving of the highest accolades, Knights of the Old Republic is a dream come true for Star Wars fans, and the most noteworthy Xbox release since "Halo." [Aug 2003, p.94]

It's one of the only Star Wars games to truly make you feel at times as though you're a key player in and a part of this unique and beloved sci-fi setting...The vast majority of Knights of the Old Republic is so exceptionally good.

The best Star Wars game since "X-Wing" and/or "Tie Fighter," if not ever. Unless something entirely unbelievable descends from the heavens, it's the RPG of the year. If the remaining major players fumble even slightly, it's game of the year.

The game shows high points of inspiration and technical achievement, but there is a pallor of inelegance and flat artistry that too often leaves the work in the hands of the gameplay. [Sept 2003, p.76]

a very good RPG that I grew up with and it’s a very nice treat for someone who likes starwars and rpg games. It’snot graphically pleasant nowadays but the story and gameplay hook you in and it’s good

Should be experienced at least once by anyone who enjoys a real role-playing experience and a well-realized universe and characters. Janky, confusing gameplay design. Fantastic atmosphere, fun characters, great art direction, and a compelling story, along with some meaningful role-playing choices that require multiple playthroughs to experience (along with all the possible companion reactions to events and player choices). Unfortunately, the gameplay requires that you have a deep understanding of DnD mechanics, and it doesn't properly convey how things work, and allows you to create completely unworkable character builds. The combat is also awkward, with terrible player team AI that will have you fighting it until you figure out how it actually works. Again, this is not conveyed properly. But the music, visuals, voice acting, atmosphere, and story are all something that has yet to be topped. This first KotOR is the relatively light-hearted sibling of its completely (technically) broken sequel, which goes full dark mood and deconstructs Star Wars lore and morality. This one just lets you have fun and roleplay.

The gameplay is pretty bad. Its interesting how CRPGs really havent aged well in gameplay. The RPG elements aren't great either. The story and universe are good, but I'd wager if this didn't have star wars attached to it, no one would really care.

This is a highly overrated game that hasn’t aged well yet I feel has nostalgia for some people who played the game 20 years ago. Having played the original back in 2004 I quickly lost interest due to the slo gameplay, long dialogue and confusing maps. Having played again more recently this only confirmed my original feelings about the game as I lost interest again.

I’ve tried playing this game 3 times now on three different platforms and I just can’t do it. I’m a big Star Wars fan and that’s not even enough to keep me interested. It’s so slow and uninteresting I have no idea why people took the time to beat it, even back in the day. The combat is so simple and tedious even for an RPG. The characters are flat and typical. The choice system is all right but not as good as a Lot of other games. The only reason to play this game in 2024 is if you’re replaying it. But there is no reason to get into it now when games like Jedi: Survivor exist.
SummaryEngage in this saga set in the Golden Age of the Republic - over 4,000 years before the first Star Wars film, when both Jedi and Sith number in the thousands. With the Galaxy reeling from a recent conflict with the Dark Lords, the ongoing battle between the Jedi and the Sith rages on. Your actions determine the outcome of this colossal g... Read More
