The mood is right, the graphics good, and the plot compelling. I found the tactical combat system refreshingly intelligent, and the multitude of ways you can approach the game from a stats point of make a wide variety of styles possible in the game.

This sequel to an all-time classic is one of the standout RPGs for the 1990s. [Jan 1998, p.221]

Fallout's detailed graphics, compelling plot, and intuitive gameplay should deservedly broaden its appeal beyond the hard-core role-playing game audience. Put simply, Fallout may be the best role-playing game to be released in years.

It has clearly aged, but it came out in 1997 and Im still enjoying it today. Good game, especially if you dont mind a little of a darker atmosphere. If you came from future installments, this one is a bit crueller. Its very much a numbers game. A little more footwork is needed than usual, because its not real time combat, this game is turn based. One wrong move and you're going to the Load Save screen. Its also got a fair bit of jank - as a tip, holding Shift shows where items and containers you can interact with are. It wont show lootable bodies, but I thought that might help to know.

This game delivers a pure, unfiltered RPG experience. Despite being released in 1997, it is still fully playable today without too much difficulty. In fact, most modern games don’t have systems this deep. When you step into the wasteland, you know nothing about the outside world, yet by the end of the game, the person who leaves the vault is no longer the same person who entered it, this creates a bittersweet feeling. The game barely holds the player’s hand when it comes to quests and progression, which gives it a strong sandbox feel. How you navigate the wasteland and influence the fate of settlements - positively or negatively - is a major part of the experience. It’s also impressive that the game is only around 500 MB in size. I’ve finished it twice now, and I still managed to play for 40 hours without getting bored. However, I don’t really recommend the vanilla version, especially because of bugs in areas like Boneyard. I strongly suggest playing with the Fixt mod. The inventory and menu management system can be very tiring. Trading, finding the right items, and using them takes a lot of time due to how often you have to go through menus. On the other hand, the RPG elements are genuinely enjoyable. Depending on your character’s stats, you can unlock deeper dialogue options and experience different quest outcomes. The turn-based combat system also holds up well even by today’s standards, it doesn’t feel outdated. One downside is that the game doesn’t clearly show quest details; you only get the quest title, which is not ideal. The dark tone of the story really pulled me in. Unlike modern games, the narrative doesn’t follow a straightforward structure. Instead, you progress by visiting different settlements and solving local problems. I did feel lost at times and had to look things up online. While the story itself isn’t particularly strong, the sandbox nature and the world itself make the experience enjoyable, making you feel like you’re truly part of that universe. The graphics are very old. However, because of the isometric perspective, they don’t feel too harsh on the eyes and become easier to get used to over time. This is a game that definitely deserves a remake, I would love to experience it that way. I spoke to almost every NPC just to learn more about the world. The ability to create your own story is also very appealing. If it weren’t for the bugs and mechanical issues, much more people would be talking about this game today. As it stands, I think only true RPG lovers can fully enjoy it. Mechanics: 2/3
Story: 1.5/3
Graphics: 0.5/3
Music: 1/1

The story is so well developed in this game you'll wonder why you've been playing mindless shooting games like "Quake." When you start the game you'll be treated to with one of the most chilling, well-written introductions a game has ever been blessed with.

What a game, man. Before heading into, I knew it was classic and it has an odd time limit. After finishing the game, finding a water chip doesn’t bother me that much because 150 days is just enough for getting it, even if you’re playing the game so badly. Also, for once, you can supply your vault through water merchants in Hub and add 100 days more to countdown. Now I can say this wasn’t most impressive thing in the game. There is only 3 obligatory mission in the game. Overseer wants 3 thing, mainly. To reach the ending, really, just you need to go to Necropolis, Mariposa Military Base and the Cathedral, of course. This is amazing because most of the RPG games entails you, to do missions. To form the bond with story. I’m not saying it is a bad method, but why someone needs to drag me into some other things to reach the goal. If they were optional and I liked the world, I would do that anyway. This is the case for Fallout, definitely. There are 12 locations in the game and devs tried to connect everyplace through side quests. And results of some of those will have an affect on main quest arc. There is no level scaling in the game, also. Let’s say with some aid of Super Mutants, you can reach Military Base, and Lieutenant. To see, how hard the challenge will be. Yeah, in some point, I escaped the outside of Base, and hoped that Guard will miss. Of course, the game is chance based but I’m sure, you don’t want to get into a fight with nearly 0 chance of winning. And lastly, I love the evils in the game, both Lieutenant and Master. Especially when you heard the story of Master from Harold. I feel bad for him. You can terminate him with argument but it was pretty rough on him. That disclosure was painful to watch. So I’ve decided to activate the nuke in the Cathedral with Lieutenant’s Key after eliminating him. Damn. Sorry Master, once again.

This top-down RPG is without a doubt the best PC RPG we have played in years. That's not an exaggeration. Years. I can't think of another game that comes even close to Fallout's excellent character generation and skill system, great story, and classy delivery.

The game play is smooth, using action points for movement and combat and the inventory system is easily managed. Fallout has one of the best character development systems of any computerized role-playing game and the graphics and story make for an excellent gaming experience.

It is vastly enjoyable. It consistently seduces with its vitality, its muscular flex, its postapocalyptic élan, its vivid, hyperreal environment.

A decent RPG where you can indeed actually advance your character and choose one of many paths through the story.

Really enjoyed my short time going through this one, kind of remarkable how much of the gameplay and atmosphere carried over to the later Bethesda entries. Yes, its hard to keep track of quests and tasks and the combat encounters vary from incredibly ez to literally impossible with no good middle ground. But the setting and characters are still fun enough that I enjoyed my time.

Miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss and **** MISS! This game would be fun if my character wouldn't miss every single shot! It just makes every encounter very boring and of course enemies do critical SHOT wow! TRICK SHOT OOOOO! shots to me so just because of that I give this game 5/10. Bad game.

This has aged poorly in my view. Poor graphics aside due to the age, the story, dialog and role-play aspects are super-thin, and combat and exploration is cumbersome and boring. I only played until I reached the Hub, then I gave up. I didn't have a single memorable moment so far. The best aspect of the game is the atmospheric music, which must have been groundbreaking at the time. Apart from that, it lacks all the character and atmosphere of the later games. I didn't feel like I was in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world. More like the deserted landscape of the American West.
