Short, but sweet and--if you followed the game's initial advice--truly scary. [Dec 2007, p.83]

This is not some side-story relegated to the PSP, but a true new chapter worthy of its name and console-sized in scope. [Nov 2007, p.77]

Origins unfortunately also falls prey to the series' most notorious pitfall--crappy combat. [Dec 2007, p.128]

I don't really get the point of prequels, but they are expecially frustrating when charatcters featured in chronologically later games are misinterpreted and their actions and personality don't match what we have seen of them so far. For me this is the worst thing that could happen to a prequel so I can't give this game more than a 5/10 despite it being overal decent

Unfortunate camera and combat issues aside, Silent Hill Origins is a worthy addition to the series and should scare the socks off even the most jaded survival horror devotee.

Origins is one of the first horror games I played. I especially liked the plot, namely the topics that it touches on, the atmosphere and the soundtrack.

Interweaving the storyline of the original title with this one and setting the stage for all that came after, it really opened and answered many questions.

It's not without its flaws, as the combat is still cumbersome and the puzzles can be very difficult, but if you crave a scary game for your portable, you can't go wrong with Origins.

It's still fun, scary, and what Silent Hill is at its essence. It's not the best game in the series, but it certainly isn't one that you want to deny the existence of.

Despite the tremendous atmosphere and occasional chilling enemy, Origins never upsets and disturbs like Silent Hill 2. Its most obvious scares are left to cut-scenes. [Chrismas 2007, p.132]

Gamestyle
Pocket-sized foibles aside, what keeps Origins out of the big-leagues that its brethren inhabit is what saved the title from disaster in the first place- it's simply too conservative by far, with none of the occasionally misplaced inventiveness found in the other titles.

One of the best games for PSP, I just had some issues with the camera, but is not a big deal. This game has a lot of good things such as, terrifying ambiance, terrifying enemies, great story, terrifying music, interesting puzzles, good controls, very good graphics, and great variety of weapons to survive the horrifying town of Silent Hill. Great game and for me this game deserves a 10/10.

This game might not change anything from the previous entries for the good, but still carries the essence what made them great. Sure, the story is a bit predictable and might be considered as an unnecessary addition to the canon, yet is deep enough to be enjoyable on its own. The controls are OK, I guess, but the combat is very frustrating in the beginning. The camera hates you and often covers target enemies from your view. I killed at least 3 bosses without actually seeing them. The breaking weapons are a good idea in general, but most of the weapons are too weak, and the throwable ones are just ridiculous, that we might try once at best. It's an interesting concept, but Travis won't throw any items one after another, even if we have plenty of them in the inventory, which begs the question, how on earth can he carry 3 TVs, 2 toolboxes, 4 toasters, but capable of throwing only one at a time... The save points are unevenly distributed during the game, which just makes it even more frustrating at times, but once combat is mastered, the enemies mean no real threat anymore, not even bosses (spare ammo for them). The atmosphere is great though. It is genuinely disturbing, unsettling and frightening at times, with invisible opponents even, but turning the light off actually helps avoiding enemies and does not really needed for visibility most of the time. Some Otherworld parts are insanely chaotic, which is exactly what I would expect from such a hostile environment, and it was great to experience. Furthermore, the game could push that even further in the final Nowhere (?) part, where I could not help but thinking "forget about supplies, let's just get out of here as soon as possible". There are no big surprises in the game, and sometimes it's inconsistent, but the soundtrack makes it unforgettable. The ambient music and theme songs are so expressive, deep, placed carefully, and set the mood so perfectly that one will ponder the events long after the playthrough just by listening the soundtrack over and over again. It's an experience worth trying and it highlighted the capabilities of this powerful little handheld.

SummarySilent Hill Origins tells the tale of a solitary truck driver stuck in the terrifying town while making a routine delivery. New gameplay elements, such as a barricade system that lets players block off rooms from enemies, and an enhanced camera system deliver an added sense of isolation and anxiety in this frightening adventure.
