Still manages to crawl under your skin. [Christmas 2011, p.109]
Both the exasperating controls and misuse of resources can be unforgiving and crippling to the gameplay progress, but careful and patient gamers that acclimate to both will find an amazing survivor-horror story with plenty of hours of gameplay.

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is the fifth stop in my Resident Evil marathon and one of the few mainline entries I had never played before—and yeah, you can feel that early-2000s DNA immediately. Coming off the modern remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, going back to tank controls was rough. The first couple hours were a real slog, and even compared to Resident Evil 0, this felt clunkier. Add in some seriously questionable voice acting (Steve… yikes) and a completely unhinged, soap-opera-meets-gothic-horror story, and this is easily one of the strangest entries in the series. That said, there’s still a lot to appreciate here. Claire Redfield is awesome and feels noticeably more hardened after Raccoon City, and the split between her and Chris keeps things interesting. The environments—especially the prison and mansion—nail that creepy Resident Evil vibe, and the shift to fully 3D backgrounds gives the camera a more dynamic feel that actually holds up pretty well. For a game that originally dropped on the Dreamcast, the HD version looks better than expected, and some of the cutscenes are surprisingly ambitious. It’s not without its frustrations—the Tyrant plane fight might be one of the worst in the entire franchise—but underneath all that is a challenging, old-school survival horror experience that still has its charm. Code: Veronica feels like a bridge between classic RE and what the series would become, and while I’d love to see it get the remake treatment, I’m glad I finally experienced it… tank controls and all.

The HD remaster of Code Veronica X features a brighter color scheme. It looks nice, but the cutscenes were not upscaled. In fact, they are very grainy. Despite that shortcoming, the game itself runs quite well. I'd rate this with a 7.6 out of 10.

The game does still offer up some pretty good jump scares and a fantastic creepy feel.

Worth Playing
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is a must-have game, but only if you fall under certain requirements. You have to be fine with more puzzles and obscure item hunts than combat. There must be a comfort level with the various odd camera angles that the game seems to love. The fact that some of the dialogue is off and that some of the voices are laughable shouldn't pose much of a problem to you. You also have to be fine with the graphical improvements being good but not mind-blowing. If you can live with all of this, then you'll certainly enjoy this classic entry in the series because of the story and action. If any of the aforementioned aspects bother you, then stick with the franchise games from Resident Evil 4 onward.

best RE there ever was. fantastic story, settings and characters (except steve burnside). kids these days just cry because of limited ammo and saves while wanting super easy games. the skill issue is real these days...

So yes. Code Veronica X still does the job. For fifteen pounds though? Hmmm. Unsure. If you're loopy about all things Resident Evil and have some xbox points sitting about then knock yourself out.

Despite being one of the best chapters of the series, this edition of Code Veronica has almost no improvements in visual aspect. Capcom delivers another bad remake for a high price.

While Resident Evil Code: Veronica X remains an interesting (and difficult) side-story in the Resident Evil franchise, an impressive coat of HD polish just can't make up for terrible controls and archaic game design.

Resident Evil 4 might get something of a free pass but Code: Veronica was flawed 11 years ago, and none of the issues are fixed in this HD 'update'.

This game is just so much fun. I really hope they remake it one day but it isn’t even needed. I enjoyed the story and I actually really like the old controls after I got used to them. I would highly recommend.

aw... this game is stupidly hard in a bad way, it is scarier than all the RE that came after it, but that's just because this game still handles like an archaic game from the nineties, I loved the games when I was a kid but they're aweful to play nowadays, plus this "HD" remake is completely laughable, I haven't got far into it, but the graphics look like i'm playing on my PS2 or even worst actually.

SummaryIn this fourth game of the "Resident Evil" series, Claire Redfield attempts to track down her brother Chris, who went missing during his investigation of the Umbrella Corp., which is responsible for those pesky zombie outbreaks throughout the series. It also comes complete with a playable demo of Capcom's next big thing, "Devil May Cry."
