It's good, old Medievil - but graphically cranked up! Everything that you remember fondly from the original is here - the humor, crazy writing, even crazier characters. It is a walk down memory lane, but one that's quite pleasant. I knew what I was in for, and was not disappointed. It plays surprisingly faithfully, so faithfully in fact that a lot of glitches and camera issues are still present in this remake (for better or worse). Personally didn't bother me as much but if you're expecting incredibly polished game this isn't it. It's still good - but "only" good. Sir Daniel Fortesque is back from the dead - but aside from graphical enhancements this plays like an original game. Decide for yourself if this is good enough for you.

Just all around not a very enjoyable gaming expirience, controls feel clanky and not very responsive. Kinda underwhelming for a game that came out in 2019.

In 2025 i finished for the first time MediEvil after only memories and a PS1 demo consumed from re-playing. This remastered sent Sir Daniel Fortesque in the modern era, fantastically in every aspect. Graphic, gameplay, music, sound (yeah the italian dub is still the original orrid trasposition but is still ok) the game offered a fantastic run, that could have been ended in a single sit, but still the ideas from the achievements makes you stay and explore deeply the whole graveyard and replay it a lot till platinum. Vote 9!

Rating a remake is always difficult, as expectations vary so strongly. Some people want it to be just like the original but prettier, others want it to reinvent the old and often outdated gameplay to meet modern standards. This remake surely takes the first route and is basically the old game in a new engine. I assume anybody born after the turn of the millenium would have trouble to understand why this game is such a gem, as it is a remnant of an era long gone. I, however, played the original on release and loved reliving this experience in modern day graphics just as much as I enjoyed playing the original as a child.

Almost one playthrough Tbh I was enjoying the game. It was flawed but it had its charms. Right until I reached the ship level near the end. That part was so infuriating and annoying. After finally reaching the end, I got stuck on a god damn bug. So I deleted it then and there. It is definitely a fun game but bothered the **** out of me. I rarely leave games unfinished.Sadly this here was the case

Funny remark: This game has some skeletons, particularly Daniel, in its closet. They may not have improved aspects like camera, fighting and movement (particularly jumping), it's still a good PS4 remake.

There is a bit of a learning curve to really get the hang of it, and sometimes it felt a bit clunky on just running the sword. But, this game is so full of charm and fun. The only other criticism I have is it could have kept a bit more of the jagged edges and grime from the original game. I also love what they've done though. The weapons are all fun, the story isn't complex, but fun and enough, and the boss fights are good and have a variety to them. Please do a MediEvil 2 remake!!

I tried for over 1 hour but it's just too difficult and the save point is the beginning of the mission, so for me it's not worthy the effort.

Davvero fantastico

Well, the game was done with some love, but it does not help it and save from the obsolete everything. If PS1 was a fresh air in setting, unusual gameplay mechanics and original NPCs and main character, the 2024 lacks in everything as all these are not fresh for obvious reasons. Strangely, it also becomes challenging in combat after 30 minutes in the game and absolutely unnecessarily. Making it less challenging would be much more fun for casual players. I understand dark greyish gamma, however more contrast would be much more satisfying. Overall, the game does not make any achievements in meaningful aspects of the game design.

Everything is great about this game but the combat honestly. I wish they would have figured out a way to reinvent that for the remake but it's awesome it stays true to the original.

The original MediEvil, released in 1998 for PS1 was one of my favorite games as a kid, especially because of its atmosphere. The combat was dull, but decent; both camera & platforming weren't really good, but at least passable. To adapt these things in 2019 (shortly after the remakes of successful PS1 games - Crash & Spyro - that are very different from MediEvil, starting with the fact the later has a health bar and is more of an action game, albeit an old one, without complex combos, hit counters, but still with platforming elements) certainly required decisions that would affect the game's reception. Making a completely remade camera & combat that could live up to modern standards would also require remaking everything about the game. It could've been good, if done well, as long as it still captured the atmosphere of the original, or could be a complete disaster. The safer, cheaper option was, of course, to copy the original MediEvil's flawed design and just throw it under new visuals (for short, this game chose the safer option and still failed), even if this would end up more of a niche game destined to people who played the original rather than newcomers. I'm part of the first, while I admit some levels can be frustrating because of the way Sir Daniel Fortesque jumps and the camera behaves, I've played it countless times through childhood / adolescence that I know it like the palm of my hand, and find the idea of asking for the game devs to include "checkpoints" something laughable as it'd break the flow of the original. But I'm not satisfied with this game, it feels much more like a low budget copy than a definitive edition, the last nail in the coffin of what could be otherwise a successful franchise. The HUD is terrible: the health bar take more space than the original and goes against basic game design, the addition of a shield bar that wasn't present in the original makes things worse, as does the circle with Dan's head. The font used in the game is also much more cartoony than the original, and the narrator, while she did a good job, didn't need to narrate every line of written lore found throughout the game. You can change between 2 selected weapons on the run (as in Medievil II) except that in this case it uses the triangle button, the same used for every other action in game. The super bright "wisp" keeps aiming at talking NPCs and books instead of enemies, it's just poorly programmed & even more poorly presented as it looks like the work of college freshmen dealing with something made decades before they were born. The graphics have ok textures for most part, with some noticeable exceptions in fog areas, but also look stuck between an intent to appear cartoony & realistic at the same time, and missing the point of the original. But many assets are reused in different levels, such as windows, and it hurts the experience since the original didn't recycle them as much between levels. Enemies & backgrounds are much brighter and saturated than the original, the night doesn't even look like night in some levels. Some enemy designs look goofier than before. The new camera is useless since it doesn't work on all levels or even allow you to jump. Dan's head & neck bones keep floating all the time. His walking animation is ridiculous. The soundtrack is mostly copied from the Resurrection (PSP, 2005) save a few new tracks which completely miss the dark atmosphere of the original (especially Dan's Crypt, Ant Caves & Pools of the Ancient Dead). These tracks are stuck in "dynamic" mode which means you'll only hear the full tunes in most levels when there are foes around, but those are few and easy to kill. In other levels the music changes abruptly into another unrelated score recycled from Resurrection. But the worst part of this remake are the cutscenes (& Zarok's Maleficent inspired redesign of course), with wrong camera angles, poor rendering, objects cutting through other objects, that display the rush that mobile game devs Other Ocean had to finish this, or that they were more worried adding useless Mr Apples in the levels than fixing its base problems only to get a token of approval from nostalgic fans who don't remember the original very well. Even the PS1 cinematics were much greater in scale, render and presentation. The final cutscene in special pales in comparison to the original, that it makes the whole experience feel like a wasted opportunity. This game only stained the noble but few merits of an original whose limits were understandable for the time, and now are sported like just intentionally poor design. I bought it day one & platinumed it in a day but recommend to play the original and MediEvil II instead (this remake includes the original, in a square screen aspect, if you finish a certain quest, perhaps only as a way for the devs to show you how the original is better). Even Resurrection got more spirit than this one, though that one also feels odd in comparison to the original.

+++++++ A really well done remake.Graphics improved a lot, but the great thing is that the levels are really similar to the original, without adding that leaving the original dialogues and voices was a really good choice!PS.I suggest you find all the lost souls, you will receive a beautiful surprise.

I’ve only played the remake and only the beginning. It seems like a nice classic. But the lack of update to auto save means you might have to start a whole level over again. This is the accepted price of playing old games on old systems but I hope for minimal upgrades to not just graphics on remasters. And by todays standards this game does not respect my time. Still, it seems above average and I miss this style of game. But not having to do the whole level again.

It's truly disheartening to give this game an average rating, considering how much I adored the original release and my anticipation for the current-generation re-release. The visual design is undeniably stunning, and I appreciate the approach of light remaking (rather than a complete overhaul). However, the game falls short in terms of polish, as I noticed instances where characters interacted strangely with the level geometry. I encountered several game-breaking glitches, including getting stuck inside walls, which required a restart. Such issues were simply unacceptable.

As someone who absolutely loved the PS1 original back in the day and also enjoyed the PSP psuedo remake I have to say that this game is just one giant missed opportunity. The devs had an oppurtunity to beef up the gameplay and bring up to a more modern standard thereby appealing to a newer generation of gamers but instead all they did was remake the visuals. What was once a chatming and unique Tim Burtonesque 3d platformer in the late 90s is noe a clunky tedious mess that will only appeal to those who are nostalgic for the original. Its a shame that the devs didnt do more because this remake couldve reinvigorated the franchise.

I was scared to try this one because of the critics. I am not disappointed and I can assure you that the critics are really not accurate, this is a great remake and I'm a picky gamer. Sure there were a few flaws (bad camera, lack of checkpoints and health could've been restored between each levels) but besides these minor issues, I had a blast and the platinum is pretty easy and fun to do. I'd say that this remake is inferior to the crash trilogy (9/10) but better than the spyro one (7/10). Great game to pick for 15/20$.

I hate this game so much! This is a Remake! Why is the combat still such a pain? Enemies are dealing damage when I touch them? Thats such a dumb mechanic and frustrating. And why no checkpoints??? This game is unplayable for me and I can't finish this game.

The game is certainly not perfect, there is plenty of outdated mechanics the developers may have been too stubborn to update. So in their journey to make it as faithful a remake as possible, they didn't polish as much as they could have. However, other than the gorgeous graphics there is plenty small quality of life changes and details added in. Not to mention the level design is still fantastic as it was in the original in fact it's improved because it's more clear and detailed. Even with the issues this game does have its a great time to play through it even in modern day. The game also does a great job at incentivizing you to keep collecting everything. You get great awards and prizes for collecting chalices, not to mention the great final reward for completing the end game content (no spoilers). Anyways, I think this game is worthy of a bit more attention and praise than it got. It's a pretty damn good game.

I had a lot of goofy fun with this. Near the end I defintely started to lose my patience with the game. But, overall, I had a really lovely time with Medievil. I really hope we get a remake for the sequel or just a straight up 3rd Medievil game. Love the premise and presentation. Want more adventures with Sir Dan tbh

I never played the original on the PS1 so I don't have anything as a reference. But I found this game pretty decent. It was entertaining and humorous. There is a wide range of different kinds of levels and they're all relatively short and not too hard. A few of them were a little annoying and made me wish they had some kind of check point though. That's because those levels were a little bit more involved. They have the player backtrack or look for items in different areas to progress. If you die, you'd have to start all over again. Some levels could have used a little more guidance on what the objective was to complete them too. Controls are janky. You'll be taking hits from enemies when you think you shouldn't. I wasn't sure if certain weapons were weaker or stronger than others. I figured if it was a new weapon then it must be better than what I had currently, but sometimes enemies would still take a bunch of hits. Maybe there should have been some kind of description of strength level in the inventory? Also the targeting when using long range weapons is bad because there is NO targeting so you can't just run and gun while you run away. You have to be facing your target. The camera gets horrendous at times. Sometimes it feels too zoomed in or out. So you might take some unnecessary hits from an enemy you can't see off screen. Overall, it's an okay game but it has some problems that should have been fixed for the PS4 remake.

After many years MediEvil is back from the grave with its Tim Burtonesque atmosphere and its marvellous Sound track. This remake clearly shines on the graphic side with an impressively colourful representation of the 21 levels and their dwellers. From foggy graveyards to scary crop fields or medieval castles, every scenario is full of details and HD textures. The OST is as good as the original, you will instantaneously love it if you like Danny Elfman's work . The clear drawbacks on this title are his clunky PS1 controls and his horrible camera system, that will cost you more life bottles and game overs than the enemies. I can more or less understand that they have not included a "Z targeting" system to be true to the original and have the funny "smash square while running " combats but why on earth keep the fix camera that make the slippery platforms almost a souls-like? Nevertheless it is a very enjoyable game and a funny platinum to get.

A gem **** with that brilliant soundtrack we all love. I loved MediEvil 1 & 2 back on the PS1 and it was a treat to re-experience the original MediEvil with todays visual glory and smoothed out controls. Other Ocean Emeryville did a terrific job with the music and visuals and kept the atmosphere and humour of the original game. I really hope we'll see MediEvil 2.
