Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered

Written by and starring the original cast of Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered is simply the best video game based on a movie property ever created. With fun gameplay and bizarre events, this is the closest you’ll ever get to strapping on a real proton pack.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game is the ultimate fan-game—that is to say, a game for the fans. It captures everything that made the original film great, and puts you in the starring role; really making you feel like a Ghostbuster. With everything that this game does right, it’s a wonder how more Ghostbusters games weren’t made, excluding the terrible Sanctum of Slime, and Ghostbusters (2016) game.

So much of Terminal Reality's love shines through, even though this isn't a mind-blowing remastered effort. Don't eye this in the store and zip into your Ghostbusters overalls expecting a super sexy visual transformation – like bookish Dana Barrett to the siren-like Gatekeeper. You instead should power on your pack with the knowledge that this game is just oozing authenticity like an open New York City sewer does “bad mood slime”.

A rather weak remaster on the technical side, but to which it is impossible not to recognize a certain intrinsic cultural value, closely linked to his respectful love for the cinematographic saga.

It’s tough to recommend a ‘remaster’ of a game that’s only half remastered. If you’re a massive Ghostbusters fan and you missed the original, then there certainly is something here for you. The fights are fun, and of course, the original cast is still hilarious, but throughout the entirety of the experience, you’re constantly reminded that you’re playing a game that’s a decade old. I wanted to like this so much more than I did, but at the very least, there is some significant potential groundwork here for the ultimate Ghostbusters game.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a personal favourite purely for its loving attention to detail and will always rank amongst gaming’s most faithful and memorable movie adaptations – more than worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as The Warriors, Alien: Isolation, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay in that regard. But this marginally prettier and inconsistent remaster doesn’t really make for a profoundly different or improved experience over the 2009 original, and there was a lot of room for improvements that could’ve made it more enjoyable to play through and appreciate all of that fan service.

The prospect of playing alongside the Ghostbusters in a story that serves as a proper sequel to the original films is exciting, but this adaptation only leaves us heartbroken. Initially a captivating experience, the magic fades fast, dispelled by poorly designed sections, bad AI, and a repetitive gameplay cycle. Thankfully, the series has since been revived with new and upcoming films, but it’s a shame that Ghostbusters: The Video game squanders a golden opportunity to become something truly special in this medium.

I want to preface my review by saying that I missed out on this game back in 2009 (money was tight as a kid lol), but I'm very happy I got to experience it, all these years later. Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a rare gem. Where countless movie tie-in games have failed miserably, Ghostbusters not only perfectly captures the essence of the source material, but acts as a legitiment third sequel to the original two films. The story was written by the same minds that crafted the OG scripts, and it shows. Somehow, the entire cast even agreed to reprise their roles, which automatically injects chemistry between all the characters. If I could use one word to describe this game, it would be "authentic". As for the gameplay, there's actually a lot more depth than a game like this has any business with. The game is linear, but not a hallway, so don't expect a particularly long experience. Think 8-10 hours. Throughout the game, the Firestation acts as the main hub for the GB team, and there is a ton of banter between characters, as well as nods to the franchise. You investigate hauntings and earn money while the overarching narrative unfolds. The action admittedly plays like a run-of-the-mill third-person shooter, just with a Ghostbusters' skin. The devs could've just skeeted by with a barebones experience, only arming players with the standard "laser lasso" proton pack, but they instead opted to offer a wide variety of weapons and upgrades. These primarily consist of various projectiles and explosives, as well as the slime guns from GB2. This makes for an incredibly flashy and varied experience, as you go up against hordes of the undead. The action here also goes far beyond anything seen in the original films, and part of me is grateful we got a Ghostbusters sequel in the form ****. Dan Ackroyd knew what the audience wanted, so he used modern technology to bypass the effects of time, transporting us back to the 1990s. The only real gripes I have with GB:TVG are the lack of visual improvements over the game's original release, and the fact that you play as an unnamed fifth Ghostbuster. I'm all for new characters, but this isn't the type of game that should have a silent protagonist. There isn't even a character creator! Oh, and your AI party members can be very dumb at times, forcing you to play "medic" often. The good news is, your companions will quite literally die on the hill to revive you. Now, these are still minor gripes in an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable (although a little dated) experience. Dan Ackoyd always wanted to make another sequel to Ghostbusters 2, and he got his wish. In many ways, this is better than any movie we could've gotten. The amount of content and lore GB:TVG contains is astounding, and it feels like the epic finale to the classic Ghostbusters era.

The first player mode is clearly the best thing about this game. The multi-player allows up to four players to compete in various modes to bust ghosts or each other. However, if you loved the movies and enjoy shooters, this game will excite and scare you while making you laugh.

The characters are very funny and original GhostBusters are really in the center of the game, which is very good. But from the game mechanics standpoint this game is a torture. Most of the time I just prayed that next fight scene won't be harder than the previous one. A lot of times when I died I didn't even realized who killed me.

Great game if you're a Ghostbusters fan, though it's not much of a remaster.
