Seriously one of the best games Ive played on the switch 2. Im a Pokemon fan and have to say ive been disappointed with all things pokemon of late but when i started playing Digimon Strangers of time i regained hope for future of video games. The story is absolutely amazing and at times breathtaking leading you to not expect outcomes and changes. The Digimon are so cool! I currently have a team of Holy digimon and i genuinely love love love their designs! The voice lines as well from them using moves or reacting to situations is so cool too! I absolutely love this game and look forward to anything else digimon related.

É facilmente o melhor game de Digimon que já existiu, possui uma variedade muito grande de Digimon para usar, mecânicas que unem tanto da franquia world quanto da própria story, além de ter uma história excelente

I only finished this game to have a sense of victory, because it truly is terrible. You just feel exhausted when playing this. I walked away feeling more frustrated than entertained. I literally fell asleep countless Times DURING grinding. Not in the endless and pointless cutscenes. Literally grinding. The good parts of the game are the huge number of digimon and the digivolution system. But that's about it. It kmis such a badly paced RPG that it annoys the player more than anything. The story drags, the dialogue never stops, and The Operator constantly talking in your ear absolutely murders any sense of momentum or atmosphere. Every few minutes the game interrupts itself to explain something unnecessary, repeat information, or force another dull conversation. And I'm a huge fan of Clair Obscure, so I like cutscenes and chitchat between characters. The difference is that it has to make sense. Sometimes I got the impression the game was designed for kids under 5, because the level of idiotic explanation it does is ridiculous. Combat starts fun enough, the Digivolution system is still addictive, and collecting Digimon remains satisfying, but the game quickly collapses under its own grind. The EXP gain is absurdly low, even by JRPG standards. A single-player RPG should not feel like unpaid labor. After a while, the repetitive battles, endless backtracking, and constant leveling requirements become mentally draining. But if you buy the DLC of extra dungeons than the game becomes ridiculously easy. The base game is already ridiculously overpriced. The quest design might honestly be the worst part. There are missions asking you to collect 13 or 15 hidden objects that do not even appear on the map. The game calls this “exploration,” but in reality it’s just wasting the player’s time. Then there’s the infamous fruit quests. A fruit is hanging from a nearby tree, you literally have flying Digimon with you, and somehow THEY cannot grab it. No, YOU have to slowly climb up and get it yourself. Then there’s another fruit. Then another. Whoever designed these quests should never be allowed near game design again because this feels like parody. And don't get me started on the voice acting. Some parts of the game are voiced. And many, even more important ones, aren't. Which makes ABSOLUTELY no sense. Sometimes I swear I wanted to enter the game and kill the operator. Jesus what an annoying character. Between the operator and the three annoying, useless and out of place kids everytime I entered that God forsaken theater I could feel my serotonin and dopamine levels dropping. The dungeons for the optional quests are repetitive, the world design is extremely linear, and parts of the interface feel weirdly cheap for a supposedly premium RPG. And to be honest, the main story is also VERY repetitive. How many times does a "Greek god" digimon does something stupid and you end up entering that theater? And then you save them doing almost exactly the same things you did before. (The part where the dilemma is to go watch your friend's anime or save the digiworld is truly laughable). The Digimon roster is fantastic, the evolution mechanics are still satisfying, and underneath all the padding there is the skeleton **** good RPG. But the endless grind, horrible pacing, lazy quest design, aggressive monetization, weak storytelling, and insultingly easy pay-to-win balance completely suffocate that potential. Digimon fans deserved better than this. Much better. Worst money I spent on games in 2026 (and I bought the "Spike Volleyball" game, and that is saying something).

Great game not just a great digimon game as much of th critics like to undervalue this masterpiece...
In my opinion there are better stories of digimon DW3 and lost evolution are more complete on storyline...
This is the first time that the game gets recognition but somehow pokemon fans (critics) rated it lower than the new pokemon game...
Im curious what metric they used and what standards it had to put this game lower, not graphically, not story, not contents, not gameplay mechanics... and not even the Megas... lol...
Digimon has always been better on anime and games...
After so many years of Marketing and fake reviews, finally digimon gets the throne...

By the time Digimon Story: Time Stranger finally becomes good, you’re already exhausted. I genuinely do not understand the overwhelmingly positive reception this game has been getting, because after spending dozens of hours with Digimon Story: Time Stranger, I walked away feeling more frustrated than entertained. Beneath the flashy Digimon models and addictive evolution system is a painfully bloated, badly paced RPG that constantly fights against the player instead of rewarding them. The first major issue is pacing, and honestly, it’s terrible. The game takes forever to get going. Not “slow burn” forever, I mean genuinely exhausting forever. The story drags, the dialogue never stops, and The Operator constantly talking in your ear absolutely murders any sense of momentum or atmosphere. Every few minutes the game interrupts itself to explain something unnecessary, repeat information, or force another dull conversation. It feels like the developers were terrified of letting the player actually play the game. And when you finally do play, the experience is wildly inconsistent. Combat starts fun enough, the Digivolution system is still addictive, and collecting Digimon remains satisfying, but the game quickly collapses under its own grind. The EXP gain is absurdly low, even by JRPG standards. There is a difference between “long” and “artificially padded,” and Time Stranger crosses that line constantly. A single-player RPG should not feel like unpaid labor. After a while, the repetitive battles, endless backtracking, and constant leveling requirements become mentally draining. Ironically, Bandai already knows this, because the paid Deluxe Mega+ content completely destroys the balance of the game. If you spend extra money, the difficulty practically disappears. So not only is the game grindy by default, it also feels blatantly pay to win. In a single-player JRPG. That is embarrassing. Speaking of money, Bandai’s DLC strategy here is ridiculous. The base game is already overpriced, then you open the store page and find a mountain of microtransactions stacked on top of it. Costumes, boosts, extras, packs everywhere. Bandai acts like they’re Sony charging premium blockbuster prices, except this game absolutely does not have that level of polish, production value, or technical quality. Keep dreaming. The presentation doesn’t help either. The English dub is horrendous. Completely lifeless performances, awkward delivery, random energy levels, it honestly sounds like they grabbed strangers off the street and handed them a script five minutes before recording. American anime dubbing already has a bad reputation sometimes, but this might be one of the roughest examples I’ve heard in years. Technically, the game also feels outdated. Some environments look decent enough, and the Digimon models themselves are good, but the dungeons are repetitive, the world design is extremely linear, and parts of the interface feel weirdly cheap for a supposedly premium RPG. There are moments where the game almost finds its footing, especially near the end of the mid-game and into the final third, where the stakes finally rise and the story becomes more engaging. But by then, I was mostly relieved the experience was almost over. Honestly, I wish I had only paid for the last third of the game, because that’s the only section that feels remotely polished. What frustrates me most is that there actually was potential here.

One of the best RPG I've played so far. I didn't know digimon and I can say that this game is 10 times better than any pokemon game.
The story is absolutely insane.
Only con would be that the gameplay isn't extremely interesting but the digimon management is really interesting ! gret discovery!

I’m not an absolute fan of the franchise, having preferred Pokémon in the past. But after being repeatedly disappointed by my favorite franchise, I decided to give this Digimon a chance. And what a surprise! I really enjoyed watching my team improve and discovering the different Digivolutions. There are a few fetch quests to pad out the playtime, but the main storyline is fairly mature, the atmosphere is engaging, and even if it’s not the game’s strongest point, the graphics were more than decent. I can only recommend this game to both fans and non-fans alike!

I’ll be upfront: I’m not deeply versed in the Digimon universe.
Growing up, I liked Digimon — but Pokémon absolutely eclipsed it. If you grew up in the early ’90s, you already know what I mean. Pokémon wasn’t just popular — it was everywhere. TV, toys, stores, even QVC selling cards. Digimon always felt like the quieter, more mature cousin.
And honestly? That perception still holds.
Digimon has always felt more complicated, more “anime,” more willing to lean into darker themes and systems. With Digimon Time Stranger, that identity really shines. At its core, the gameplay will feel familiar if you’ve ever played Pokémon:
Capture creatures
Train them
Battle with them
Level them up
Evolve them
If you understand that loop, you’ll understand this game immediately.
The big difference? Execution.
The game looks great. The Digimon models are clean, expressive, and animated well. The attack animations in particular stood out — flashy without being annoying, and genuinely fun to watch.
That said, there is some reuse in enemy design. You’ll notice things like:
An ice wizard Digimon
A regular wizard Digimon
Same model, different color palette.
It didn’t bother me much, but I can see how some people might not love that.
The controls are exactly what you’d want from a turn-based RPG — smooth, responsive, nothing clunky. The sound design is solid, and I really appreciated that the game includes overworld encounters where your Digimon can engage enemies without constantly forcing full battles. Huge quality-of-life win. The story started off slow. I wasn’t hooked right away. But it does pick up and when it does there are legitimate twists and turns that caught me off guard. It ends up being far more engaging than I expected, especially for a monster-collecting RPG. By the time I was deep into it, I was genuinely invested. I can’t avoid the Pokémon comparison — and honestly, I don’t want to. If we’re talking modern Pokémon games (as of 2026) Digimon Time Stranger is miles ahead. To me, Pokémon has become watered-down, overly easy, and borderline soulless. There’s little replayability, almost no challenge, and the designs lately just feel lazy. Keys. Swords. Tree stumps. Garbage bags. It often feels like anything they can put face on becomes Pokémon.
Digimon isn’t perfect — there are absolutely some weird designs (toy Digimon, questionable concepts, etc.) — but it at least tries to be interesting.
That said, Digimon has its own barrier to entry. The biggest downside is if you like me and only really know few of generation 1 Digimon then yeah — you’re going to be lost with a huge chunk of the roster. Let’s talk about Digimon evolution for a second. It makes absolutely no sense. Im not sure if that’s intentional or just tradition at this point, but the memes exist for a reason. One Digimon turns into something completely unrelated, and you just kind of have to accept it lol Its ok. If you can pick up for $30-$40 give it shot.

Really charming game with lots of customization of your favorite Digimon line. Speaking from narrative perspective, every "big" digimon you encountered along the way has their part in adding small message to the bigger themes of the game. They made every animation for each Digimon in the game (Low health animation, status effect animation, winning pose, etc) and that tells me they really cared about making a good monster taming game. Art style itself isn't anything groundbreaking but the cell shaded style really fits the Digimon and also the human character. Difficulty ranged from story mode to ultra hard where there's no option to run, no item usage, and also more aggressive enemy AI so there's difficulty for every playstyle. TLDR: Personal GOTY aside from E33 that excels in charming art style, really good PC port, and also focus lots to tell something meaningful (Keyword: Time).

It loses the element of surprise of Cybersleuth, but it takes that foundation and improves upon it. The breeding system has been simplified, but it could still be improved. The story is interesting and quite mature, but it progresses a bit slowly in some parts. Graphically, it could be much better, but it compensates with some truly impressive cinematics. By far the worst aspect is the OST, deliberately made so cheap to encourage players to buy the DLC with the anime music. In short, it's on the right track, although it still has a way to go before being the definitive Digimon game.

This game is fantastic, the gameplay has depth and the story is mature, unlike the competition, this game doesn't call you limited. It has amazing voiceover. Ut is like playing an anime. The most beautiful cell shading available.

Phenomenally detailed game. A compelling like in the anime (very similar "threat" level to tamers). Excellent gameplay with a very balanced difficulty curve (even playing on the medium difficulty despite me playing several digimon story games before). Excellent English voice acting! Score has instantly gone onto my Spotify! Just all round great game!
Only negative, the collector and 100%er in me wishes I could have gotten more eggs

In terms of gameplay, time stranger is not only the best digimon game ever made, it is also one of the best modern monster catching games along with Smt, it has some optimization issues on ps5, also the story is... not the best in the digimon series, apart from that, time stranger is such adicting rpg.

My personal GOTY 2025. Amazing JRPG that combines what worked in previous games like Cybersleuth and new functions. Being able to use your gun to attack with or support your Digimon is great. There's a lot of freedom in what kind of team you want to make with a lot of familiar returning Digimon but also some new entries including some that have been requested for a while. The story is touching and doesn't always take itsself too seriously, which is good.

Okay, how do I start this review again? You know that scene in Ratatouille where a certain character eats a food and then goes to remembering childhood memories and stuffs? That's how it feels to play this game. If you're a fan of SMT series, you would be pleased that this game is a nod to that battle system and don't let me start on the digivolution stuffs. That's one hell of addicting system and a very good one at that. Speaking about narrative, It's a story that appeals to everyone and tackles heavy stuffs like grief, loss, determinism, survivor's guilt that can be slow at times, but there're many setup with adequate payoffs. Every digimon NPC has their own life and urgency so it's not revolving just only to the main character. The graphics itself is really amazing with the right intention cell shaded art style. By not pursuing realism, it's kind of a charming art style in a way.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a notable entry in the JRPG landscape, offering a more mature and thoughtfully crafted experience than many recent monster collecting games. It combines a strong progression system, polished presentation and a darker narrative tone that sets it apart from its competitors, making it an appealing choice for players looking for something deeper than the usual formula. For me, the game goes beyond being just a solid JRPG because it genuinely understands what makes Digimon unique. The feeling of growing through inner struggles, the emotional weight behind each evolution and the slightly darker atmosphere all capture the essence of the series. I especially appreciated how the story focuses on personal growth, difficult choices and the emotional cost of gaining power, giving the whole journey a meaningful tone even if its narrative is not as strong or memorable as Cyber Sleuth’s. That said, it is far from bad and still delivers enough atmosphere and emotional impact to keep me invested. Characters like Beelzebumon, who carry both power and pain, make these themes feel even more relevant to me. The time travel premise and the conflict between two worlds fit perfectly into the mood of the game, and what makes it even more impressive is how it manages to build on the foundation set by Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory, taking their strengths and reshaping them into something new rather than trying to copy them. It is also amusing to see fans who keep accepting Pokemon’s weak and repetitive releases and Nintendo’s money focused approach now looking at this game with envy. Even with a few simple encounters, the atmosphere, emotional depth and the way the game handles evolution and growth make Time Stranger a strong and meaningful addition to the series, one that earns its place while still acknowledging the legacy of the titles that came before it.

I have no idea why so many people praise this game to high heck. For starters, Bandai Namco decided to shove Denuvo into the Steam version of the game. Why is this bad? Because this means it has an always online requirement, even tho it's a single-player only game. So if you have a Steam Deck, you're out of luck since you can't play the game without an internet connection, even tho the whole point of getting a Steam Deck, like any other gaming handheld, is playing games on the go. Not to mention they made day one DLC (disc locked content) that include quality of life features and nostalgia bait. Then there's the gameplay which is, for the most part, good, and the Digivolution system is better than Next Order at least, but why do I have to be a certain Agent Rank just to unlock more Digivolutions? Not to mention, to recruit new Digimon, you need to get at least 100% in Conversion, it's not as bad as how Monster Sanctuary handles it's monster taming, but it's still not good. The soundtrack is easily one of the best I've heard in recent years, not as good as Ace Combat 7 or DOOM Eternal, but still really good. And then we get to *groan* the story and characters, dear lord they ****. The story feels like it's going in circles for much of the game, it tries so hard to be deep only to come off as cringeworthy, the amount of times it tells you your actions are necessary to save the future but also war is bad makes it feel forced and bad, and it doesn't even get good until we get near the end of the game. One problem I have is the game tries to be emotionally deep, but that immediately gets erased (nullified in one instance) by the fact you have to go back to almost an hour earlier because the game won't let you fail. My own reservations about forced succession aside, isn't the whole point of an RPG to, you know, roleplay? Don't even get me started on how awful the backtracking is, it makes the backtracking in Metroid Prime look good. As for characters, they range anywhere from bland and boring to obnoxious and annoying, the only character that feels like a real character is Aegiomon. TL;DR, the music is great and the gameplay is good, but the story, backtracking, characters, day one DLC, and DRM are absolutely awful. The only things keeping this game from getting less than a 5 out of 10 are the gameplay and the music.

Honestly can't understand how this is getting such glowing reviews. As far as the monster gathering mechanics go, it's good, but tedious in the sense you can't just capture something by fighting it once, you need to fight something over and over again sometimes accruing as little as 5% progress per kill, with 100-200% required to recruit it. The plot is good on paper, but poorly executed, I'm 60 hours in so far, and the game has taken me to every major area at least twice, and the latter half of the game has a nasty habit of having you replay the entire area you just completed due to time travel shenanigans. I'm engrossed enough to want to see how it ends, but not particularly happy about having to replay areas and trudge through anime slop filler conversations, not a single word that comes out of Inori's mouth has any bearing on the plot. The absolute worst thing about this game, are the digimon following you around. Now they had to make them follow you, because you're supposed to chat with them to change their personalities through a series of repetitive trite questions. However the further into the game you get the bigger most digimon are, they're programmed to run in front of you when you stop so they can be spoken to, but all this does is constantly block your camera, it's absolutely infuriating. So if you want a mid story, with cliche anime conversations, a series of decent but overused locales and a good but somewhat grindy monster collecting experience, check this game out.

This game has SOUL. Watch the short anime prelude before you play to give some added information for several characters. A mark of good story that appeals not to children but adult as well and that's why it's such a powerful medium to tell something important. From a gameplay perspective, if you're familiar with SMT and Persona franchises, this game also adapts few gameplay mechanics from those two games. From a graphics perspective, there's no need for ultra realism because the cell shaded art style is such a charming technique to give life to all of the Digimon design and also human character as well. If you're a fan of monster taming game, I couldn't recommend this game enough.

Absolute gem of a JRPG. Where do I start? Slick anime aesthetics, bangin' OST, a mature storyline, and shockingly... waifus?! This looks and plays like a Persona game, it even has a similar combat and evolution system as a Shin Megami Tensei title. You can even talk to your Digimon and change their natures, is this really an ATLUS game in disguise? I was never into the Digimon series and wrote it off as brain-rotted schlock, but this game's art style intrigued me, and I like the thicc female protagonist, she rawks a great outfit to boot, and then I realized that the sheer number of attractive female Digimon takes a page from the Shin Megami Tensei book as well. They look badass and I simply wasn't expecting 10/10 waifus in a cute creature-capturing RPG. This game is dope af and I highly recommend it if you are a connoisseur of JRPGS or anime-based games in general.

It's just great overall, not really any major bad things I could say about it. It was a huge improvement from the previous digimon story games and they fixed a lot of the issues people had had with them. Game mechanics are really nice and refined, the selection of digimon is also good since there is a lot of them in the game. I wish some of the newer ones were included, but this game started development before they were a thing so i can't really complain. The game was well phased, as in like especially in the beginning you couldn't overlevel or anything since you just couldn't gain exp nor get evolutions until you progressed in the story or worked for it, that i really liked. Also I like that the bosses were long fights since it offered challenge and forced you to actually get your item management and skills together, not just spam one thing. Story well I cried a couple of times, is it a habit with the digimon story games to keep pulling your heartstrings? I don't think i can even talk about the story without spoiling everything but like it hits kind of like hacker's memory but just so much more painful. I also like that this game is okay for people not familiar with digimon, as in like easy to get into even without knowing about it I'll rewrite this in depth once i finish replaying this so i can get the full experience now that im more familiar with the story.

A Great game with a nice written story fun combat mechanics and brilliant character designs, the only thing stopping it from being a 10 out 10 is the most God awful card game minigame I have ever seen
