Yakuza 0: Director's Cut

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is an improved version of Yakuza 0 that was released in 2015 serves as a prologue to the original Yakuza series and takes place in the 1980s with a young Kazuma Kiryu and a young Goro Majima as the main protagonists. Both protagonists have three different styles with a legend style on top of it. Kiryu has a Brawler style, a Rush style and Beast style. His legendary style is the “Dragon of Dojima” style. Brawler is a versatile style that allows the usage of quick steps to dodge, weapons and good melee combos. Rush style is focused on quick actions, quick punch combinations and a heavy reliance on quick steps to dodge incoming enemy attacks. It does not allow the use of weapons and is a solely melee focused combat style. Beast style is a style that allows for high defense, low staggering and a stance that allows for tanking hits. In this mode you automatically pick up weapons when fighting as long as they are within reach. The Dragon of Dojima form is a combination of all three styles. I found it a bit clunky to use and in general I mostly returned to the Brawler style as I found it to be the most versatile of all the styles. Majima has four styles as well. The first one is the Thug style and it is a versatile punch and kick style. Just like Kiryus breaker style as well. The Slugger style is a weapon based combat style which allows Majima to use several different weapons while fighting. At the beginning this is only a bat which he is able to use indefinitely, but over time he can learn to use different weapons like Nunchakus, Katana's, daggers, poles, and Kali sticks as well. The third fighting style is the breaker style and like the name suggests it allows Majima to use a breakdance Capoeira style of combat which is more useful to take on multiple enemies at once. The legend fighting style for Majima is called “Mad Dog of Shimano”. Like with Kiryu, it combines all three other fighting styles into a fourth fighting style which is equipped with the demon dagger all the time which is the iconic weapon of Majima. It symbolizes the true form of Majimas fighting style. For the most time I used the Slugger fighting style as it was the easiest to use and switched to Mad dog of Shimano as soon as the style was available to me. Storywise Yakuza delivers a very engaging story that is mostly drama and thriller with plot twists at every turn. With all the plot twists and character developments the only suspension of disbelief is the general reset of the main characters or side characters at the end of the game just to get them back into the position that the first Yakuza game demands of them. Apart from that I hold the story in very high regard. The game as usual contains several mini games that are more light hearted than the main story. Every main character has one major mini game with an extensive story arc. For Kazuma Kiryu, that is the Real Estate side quest where you have to take down five evil billionaires in order to keep them from ruining Kamarucho. For Goro Majima it is the Cabaret Club sidequest where he must manage a cabaret club to defeat five evil cabaret club owners that threaten the cabarets and cabaret clubs in Sotenbori and threaten to monopolize the whole entertainment industry in Sotenbori. There are several improvements upon the original game in this directors cut as improved graphics and so on. For me personally a saving grace was the autosave feature as in my original play through of the original Yakuza 0, I failed to save while doing the Cabaret Club side quest for Goro Majima and with 80% finished lost all progress, which amounted to eight to ten hours of playtime being lost. This led to me quitting my play through of the original game and only continuing when the director's cut became available. Everyone who hasn't played the original Yakuza 0 it is highly recommended to play Yakuza 0 Director's Cut as it is a very good game, but it also depends on you having prior experience at least with Yakuza 1. Yakuza games tend to drop in price fairly often and reach fairly low prices after a while. So if you're not up to buying the game full price you can also wait for a sale and buy it when it becomes cheap.
