With beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay that evolves throughout, and excellent sound design and music, Deer & Boy is a fantastic and polished cinematic platformer with a huge heart, but what impressed me most was how much it surprised me.

Gameplay met my expectations. It covered everything that I was anticipating with a few sections that broke away—and for me that’s a positive. It is definitely recommendable to fans of platforming puzzle games like this, such as Limbo or Inside. If you aren’t a fan of those games, you probably wouldn’t care too much for this one. And if you’re unfamiliar altogether, I’d still recommend this one for the story and design alone. It deserves its currently Very Positive review rating on Steam, and I can’t wait to see what Lifeline Games does next.

This is largely due to the game failing to provide concrete answers about the world’s magic and darkness. As a game, though, it is enjoyable enough, with some cleverly designed puzzles. But the clunky movements of the adult deer and the frustrating stealth sections may irritate you occasionally on this magical journey.

Despite good intentions, pretty visuals, a cute deer, and a well-chosen theme, Deer & Boy never comes close to the genre's best games. The rudimentary design screams "my first cinematic puzzle-platformer," and when frustration rears its head regularly while the narrative and emotional aspects never quite hit the mark, well, it's hard to feel anything but dissatisfied.

Your entire focus is on protecting it, meaning you constantly have to factor in your little companion's limitations when navigating obstacles. It creates a feeling of genuine dependency, this isn't just a generic AI following you around. Then, as the deer grows up, the whole dynamic shifts. Puzzles that used to require careful, solo navigation slowly turn into team-based challenges. The adult deer becomes a powerhouse, it can reach higher platforms, smash through barriers, and honestly, just provide this sense of emotional support during the rougher sequences. If a younger kid plays this, they’re going to see a really touching, surface-level story about a boy and his animal friend. But for older players, there are so many deeper layers here. It tackles heavy themes like healing from trauma, learning to trust again, and finding your own courage through the presence of someone else. Story Score: 8 / 10. 3. Performance Review For the most part, the game runs beautifully. The frame rate is stable, and it feels smooth during the platforming sections. However, I have to knock off a few points because of the bugs. There were several frustrating moments where my character just got completely stuck in the environment geometry, unable to move anywhere. When a game does such a good job of immersing you in its world, getting soft-locked like that is a massive immersion breaker. Hopefully, the devs can patch that up soon. Performance Score: 7 / 10. 4. Meanwhile, the boy’s posture slowly changes over the course of the game, mirroring his growing self-assurance and his emotional recovery. Even the environment tells a story. The landscapes shift from this dark, threatening wilderness to calming, bright sanctuaries, directly reflecting the inner journey of the characters. The weather, the lighting changes, the transitions between seasons, it all visually reinforces the emotional beats of the story while keeping your eyes glued to the screen. Visual & Audio Score: 8 / 10. 5. Conclusion So, wrapping things up. Deer & Boy offers a very distinct take on the platformer genre. It actively chooses to prioritize an emotional connection over crazy mechanical complexity. By focusing on wordless storytelling and the beautiful evolution of your companion, it creates an adventure that resonates no matter how old you are.
