With beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay that evolves throughout, and excellent sound design and music, Deer & Boy is a fantastic and polished cinematic platformer with a huge heart, but what impressed me most was how much it surprised me.

Deer & Boy is a beautifully crafted cinematic experience about two unlikely friends who find each other in their greatest time of need. A purposeful design choice to exclude dialogue has not only made this title more accessible to players of all ages and languages but has also given the other design elements more room to play and take up emotional space. The simple character design of the Deer and his Boy only heightens the visual depth of the detailed backgrounds and environments, with vivid colours and atmospheric lighting. A wonderfully enjoyable soundtrack wraps emotional moments in a tight hug, with all the design elements coming together to create the perfect tear-jerking moments. With simple-to-understand puzzle elements, Deer & Boy is an experience that can and should be enjoyed by all.

Deer & Boy is another work of art in motion and a game capable of breaking the player’s heart. While it explores universal themes such as friendship and resilience, it draws us into a silent fantasy world that brings out our deepest emotions.

Its evolving gameplay, clever puzzles, strong pacing, and emotional presentation make it feel like a playable animated film. Some stiff controls occasionally disrupt the flow, but this remains a moving and visually impressive wordless journey.

Deer and Boy is a rare example of handcrafted work, made with immense love for details and characters. The simple puzzles and fairy-tale story might put some people off, but it is still one of the coziest games of 2026.

Deer & Boy claims its rightful place in the Olympus of 2D adventures. The title brings to the table all those elements that made games like Limbo, Neva, and Planet of Lana great, while taking them to the absolute next level. The game offers a varied gameplay experience that evolves right along with the story. Although the environmental puzzles might not pose a major challenge for more experienced players, they truly shine in terms of design and are remarkably inspired. Deer & Boy places immense focus on the story it wants to tell, doing so by making plenty of room for colors, emotions, silences, hugs, and the fears of the two protagonists. The result is a thoroughly impressive debut for Lifeline Games.

Gameplay met my expectations. It covered everything that I was anticipating with a few sections that broke away—and for me that’s a positive. It is definitely recommendable to fans of platforming puzzle games like this, such as Limbo or Inside. If you aren’t a fan of those games, you probably wouldn’t care too much for this one. And if you’re unfamiliar altogether, I’d still recommend this one for the story and design alone. It deserves its currently Very Positive review rating on Steam, and I can’t wait to see what Lifeline Games does next.

With its gorgeous art style, emotional storytelling, and immersive atmosphere, Deer & Boy leaves a lasting impression. Despite some uneven puzzle design and occasionally unclear controls, it's a heartfelt adventure well worth experiencing.

Deer & Boy is a visually and aurally stunning cinematic experience. However, every great film also needs a great story, and this release falls short in this respect. This is largely due to the game failing to provide concrete answers about the world’s magic and darkness. As a game, though, it is enjoyable enough, with some cleverly designed puzzles. But the clunky movements of the adult deer and the frustrating stealth sections may irritate you occasionally on this magical journey.

Deer & Boy is visually endearing, clever and incredibly fun at times, but suffers from a lack of depth, both in its characters and mechanics.
