ZERO personality in this movie. How is the Hero a badass?. How was the Villain a badass? Why are they good fighters? Are their fighting style different? Did the Hero and Villain even need to fight? Did our hero grow and learn from being a mother and her journey that she then used that knowledge to beat the Villain? Big ole SHRUG to all of that!
There are a few charming moments but the pacing and timing is all off. The editing is 80% why this live action version did not work at all! ... 15% is old and new dialogue. 5% performances.
Hyper cut action. No refresher on who anyone is. Characters making unrealistic decisions. And how has KiKi Layne had years to get better and didn't? Poor girl is awful when acting along these veterans.
Apparently, Asian and Indian faces aren't allowed to have lines... or been seen. This is the definition of cultural appropriation. I truly had zero moments of joy with this movie. The actors were extremely miscast. Zegler did not sell kind or strong even a little. It comes off as petulant. Galdot has zero menace.
Would have been a 7 but you had to force some woke. Do it more subtly. When you add a woke line in the middle of a high tension scene, you pull the attention from the scene to the out-of-place dialogue.
There was SO much good about this movie! But a few things were so jarring that it snapped me out of my suspension of disbelief. Connor. He was surprisingly comfortable being himself on camera. His character was not convincing at all.
Other characters hand horror movie syndrome. Making choices no sane human would make.
Fight scenes were really great and then really bad. I think they ramped up the film speed and used CGI. Some fights had long cuts and others were hyper cut.
This is the lowest rating I've ever given a film. I litterally could only stream 20 mins at a time it was so bad. Dialog is unnatural. Wardrobe is weird. Actor are so new they come off as artificial. Action is hyper cut. Editing and score might be the worst I've seen and heard. NOTHING works in the movie.
This movie is obnoxious!
It has NO, clear goals, clear obstacles, and defining or flawed characters. Editing, acting, and writing were all phoned in. Bryce Dallas Howard's weight gain shocked me the whole time. She is easily 150lbs heavier than I last saw her. And she should live her life! But it was so distracting to see such a big difference. Lastly, her fight scenes were a huge leap in the suspension of disbelief.I It's like physics got drunk and fell asleep. But... there was a cool fight scene that they messed up with. The oil fight. I hope someone will do it better!
This was cringy right from the start. Awkward dialog. A stilted speaking. Jarring cuts. AWKWARD camera angles. Not one character has a redeeming trait. I don't know what the main character wants or why he wants it. No idea.
This isn't an action movie. Not a scifi, space opera, or a heist movie. This is a character study and is what a movie SHOULD be! Flawed characters making flawed decisions for the right reasons! That is character growth! Every FREAKING character! I truly am going to miss this group.
We know this is the toxic and destructive kind of woke but let's ignore the "woke" and focus on the movie. It has no charm. No wonder of exploring a new world. The characters are bland and interchangeable. They've no goals or obstacles to overcome. I never was able to engage emotionally. Set design, cinematography, and acting are great despite the awful material.
"Good enough" had to have been the motto on this set. This is the definition of lazy filmmaking. Bad writing, bad acting, bad casting from leads to supporting, bad editing, bad directing, bad stunts, and action. I'm not exaggerating any of those critiques. I did not have one moment of fun.
This movie is pretentious and exhausting. Worst kind of woke. Characters making unrealistic choices, no one is relatable, and goals aren't believable. Acting is great but with such bad material in such a bad vehicle, it's not noticeable. Dialog is stilted and unreliable. Angles and cuts are jarring and is more disengaging then the story and characters. As someone who's been trying to make a living as a filmmaker for 20 years, It's mind boggling that something like this gets made.
What a massive downgrade in story... I wanted it to be amazing as a Boseman send off. Unfortunately, the story and some weird out of place wokism lowers the quality of the amazing, acting, cinematography, and the rest.
I wanted to love this movie but it had no charm, no heart. The characters weren't likable and had no goals. And the worst of all, they somehow they made The Rock boring! This is a popcorn movie through and through. A spectacle to pass the time that with zero emotional investment.
Heart! Fun, well-shot action. Well written characters that we learn to care about. But most shockingly, It has heart! Every main character has an emotional beat I'm invested in! I will definitely be revisiting this movie every few years. I pray to the Hollywood overlords for a sequel!
Whoever made the trailer did this movie an injustice. The trailer was all about the patriarchy putting a woman down but that is not the movie we got. Probably the best entry since the original. Intimate with clear action and a real threat. Characters were reactive. Action was a bit cartoonish at moments. Acting was below expected but amazing for how inexperienced most of the cast was. CGI showed in some moments. But I had a GREAT time!
I wanted to LOVE you! But you didn't invite back Hugo Weaving and Laurence Freaking Fishburne! Gave us hyper-cut action all while just being a slightly updated retelling. You broke my heart.
Solid popcorn movie that didn't give me any of the feels. Pros- Solid fights and stunts. Solid performance including ALL Chinese talent acting in their non-mother language. Even Awkwafina had a good performance. She was out of her league compared to the other actors but kept up. Cons- The lead actors put a sour taste in my mouth before seeing the movie. Simu Liu with his talk about Hollywood hating Asians and Awkwafina vowing never to do an Asian accent in her performances but okay doing "ghetto" accents. Fortunately, I quickly forgot about that thanks to their performances. For most of this movie, our leads were passively reactionary. No clear, strong goals. Also, they never had to overcome character flaws. Boring characters with very charming performances. The climax was spoiled by our lead discovering his "power" by defining his self-worth in a vague way that I still can't explain.
Unfortunately this movie is probably the worst entry in the Craig Bond era. In this movie, Bond is a passive, reactive character resulting in an uninvested watch. This Bond is the opposite of who Bond is. An overbearing, hyper-focused, goal oriented, flawed hero. It's only at the end of this movie Bond makes a decision and take action most of us would fail to take. With Bond having no goals or clear obstacles to overcome, most of this movie drags to an anti-climatic finale.
Predictable story but John Wick level action from Mary E. I hope I see more clean action like this from her! Very impressed with all acting. Including all Japanese performers. Miku Patricia Martineau was the stand-out. Bratty and endering at the same time.
The story is the same fish out of water comedy plot we've seen 100 times. But the actor's chemistry, charisma, and pure joy of being able to over-actor in this over-the-top comedy makes this more charming than funny. The filmmakers continually ask us to stretch our suspension of disbelief beyond the point that we can't believe a person would make any of these unrealistic choices. Regardless, our actors hold the movie together enough to make this movie a watch for a boring night in.
Not a popcorn movie. Hard pass if you have anything else waiting for you in your movie queue. Cheesy action movies are my guilty LOVE but this movie doesn't deliver on the action... or being a movie. Characters have no relatable goals making incoherent choices. Hyper-cut action with no consequences and a story so disjointed it felt written by Gumby. Personal thoughts:
These are some of the most capable action actors and you hyper cut their fights. All you had to do is give us clean action and we'd forgive race swapping Snake Eyes and reimagining the most beloved GI Joe character. Truly disappointed.
I wanted to watch a mindless popcorn action movie and I got a movie that feels written, directed, and edited by Wile Coyote. So entertaining but nonsensical. Hyper-cut, consequence-free, and physics-less action, disorientating plot, and monotoned characters with plot armor. It's bad but fun watch on a boarding night when you can't spare any brainpower.
This movie was so close to be AMAZING! Acting is perfect! Action fun and clever! Story, good enough. But the writing, directing, and editing are all slightly off making this movie feel disjointed. Dialog can't be saved by this S-skill level cast.
Editing is too slow making the story drag and then ramp up too high with their hyper-cut action. Directing can't pick a tone. Serious drama one min and whimsical caper the next. Give this movie to a skilled editor, leave them alone for a few months and I bet they will have the first film in a franchise.
Solid action! Great banter! Great Romanoff world-building. Unfortunately, I feel this movie was hit by the woke train. Men are dumb bruttes. Cowardly manipulators. Woman are victims and would never do anything bad. I would of loved to see a morally torn group of Widows fighting each other! I wish MCU would let some heavy moments land instead of undercutting them with jokes. It'd give the world more weight.
This movie was really **** that Chinese d*** to get that Chinese money. Wasn't even a popcorn movie. The story is so non-existent that I had no emotions over a character dying.
The vast majority of people who survive in the future are black Americans? No Asians. No Latins? Middle Easterns? No Caucasians? Those are some racist monsters! I'm talking about the film makers.
We came for a popcorn martial arts film but got a film that has trouble landing the martial arts. The gems of action-acting being Hiroyuki Sanada(Scorpian), Lewis Tan, and Joe Taslm(Sub-Zero). The rest of our talent just didn't have the martial skills for the long-take fight scenes that Mortal Kombat tried to go for. I love that they used a lot of no-name actors but either the actors weren't good and everything sounded cringy or the actor was amazing but the dialog was cringy. Either way, it was easy to disconnect from the movie.
This felt like a discount Disney princess movie compared to classic Disney. Unrealistic character choices and a disjointed story. Only 1 character earned emotional investment from me. Every other character was a caricature and monotoned.
I refuse to give this movie any of my vastly available mental energy it is that bad. Men bad, women good. I hope Chloe Grace Moretz was contractually obligated to do this movie. If not, I can't imgaine the type of boys in her life that made her think "yeah, this is how grown boys are."
Positives:
Solid children's Christmas movie. Broadway-style show numbers. World was built SO well! Best I've seen a "Christmas town" look. Performances are great. Negatives:
Music is pretty forgettable. Not bad but not something that stays with you. The main character wasn't introduced until 31 min mark. Slow to start. Long to end. Personal thoughts: Black cast and WHO CARES? Race had nothing to do with any character's journey. But a black cast performing mostly(not a music expert) hiphop and soul numbers? The movie felt like it was stereotyping music to a specific race and therefore stereotyping the audience... I felt pretty unsettled. I enjoyed this movie but it is not a holiday classic.
China literally makes the best story telling tools illegal. No "co-production" will ever be successful while Chinese censorship stifles any engaging story telling tool like character develop through overcoming flaws. Literally illegal!
Solid popcorn movie. KiKi Layne's acting is so far below her co-stars that it makes every scene cringeworthy. She is such an undeveloped actor with less than half as many credits as any of her co-stars, she was way out of her league. Charlize Theron's stunt acting was amazing and left her co-stars in the dust. Every actor's fight scenes were hyper-cut besides Charlize. This left me excitedly waiting for her fights.
I hope Jordan Peele is not a one-trick pony. This is so nonsensical that studios will have to rein him in from now on. All the technical aspects of this movie are amazing but the story is nonsense. A series of unrelated events, illogical cause and effects backed by deus ex machina of a reveal does not make a good, scary viewing. After watching the movie I read the script and still couldn't follow.
Trailers lead me to believe this would be a heist film with Harley as our Danny Ocean. I would much rather have seen that movie. These amazing actresses with nowhere to go... Hyper cut action. Great acting. Bad dialog and characters. Our heroes were bland and had no reason to grow and no flaws to overcome. The men/villains suffered from the same problem.
Nothing to this movie except women can do everything and men are the enemy. The female characters are so universally good at everything that they have no individuality. We never see them struggle in a situation or compensate for their faults because they have none. All the male characters are cartoonish exaggerations of men, including their acting. They hate women for some unexplained reseason and their only job is to get in the way of our heroes. 2002 Charlie's Angels was much better.
The tone of the movie jumps from comedy to satire to surreal to action. The action is hyper-cut and doesn't flow. The acting is on point if the intent of the movie was satire. Movie could of been very fun in the hands of the right director and editor.
Popcorn movie. Not good or bad. A time killer.
Acting is on point. Casting is solid. Dialog is bad bad bad. No actor can save it. CGI is out of place. All CGI moments don't feel to interact with the world. Action is all you can ask for except the fights are quick cuts and loose track of the action.
Just rewatched this. Movie is gorgeous. Acting is solid. Story was so so bad. Characters were all bland and uncompelling. I hate to use this term but... Mary sue all over the place. LUKE! They put Luke's name on some random character and expect me to believe it's Luke? Nope. Luke's most defining trait is optimism and he becomes emo because he screwed up? Nope. Luke would then sacrifice himself to make sure Ben Solo knew he was loved.
Acting was great. Rosa Salazar killed it being vulerable and strong. The romance was uncompelling. Action and CGI was amazing. Story was solid, not amazing. They stuck to the comic book enough to satisfy while still pleasing viewers who aren't apprised of the source material.
I'm not a reviewer but this was a tough watch. Like a beta version of phase-1 movies. Acting was solid. CGI de-aging was crazy good. Banter between characters was fun. Action was hyper-cut. Story and characters were just bad. The cat was the best character and I hate cats. Slapping Nick F onto some random character and calling him Nick F doesn't make him Nick F. And then he's devalued, an epic character built-up over a decade into a scratch joke. With all the drama around this movie, hard not to notice that literally, 2 men in the movie are good guys. Every woman was a good girl.
