The Bluff

There are two types of pirate film fans: those who love the genre for its thrilling adventure. Then there are the fans of actual piracy, the more bloody and violent the better. The Bluff combines the salt and tang of piracy with a daring, bloody fight to the finish that will satisfy fans of all ranks and allegiances.

While The Bluff isn’t perfect, it is fun, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas excels at the action, so for an entertaining streaming option, this will do nicely.

The Bluff is a rollicking throwback to the swashbuckling action of old. It is brutal and inventive enough to wash over its derivative narrative.

The Bluff exemplifies a very enjoyable type of nostalgia-bait, even if it’s never as good as its elevator pitch.

Chopra Jonas gamely commits to the pulpiness of The Bluff, even as it doesn’t ask much of her beyond its impressive action sequences and a few tart one-liners. But there’s cinematic swoop to the movie that you might not expect in a straight-to-streaming swashbuckler, and you feel the grisliness as she drags herself along the ground in blood-splattered clothes like so many final girls of gory slashers before her.

Indeed, The Bluff is a rollicking good time despite the fact (or maybe because of the fact) that the line between thrilling and ridiculous has never felt more razor thin than it does here.

Co-writers Joe Ballarini and Frank E. Flowers (who also directed) cobble together characters and cliches from many a pirate tale for this ham-fisted affair, which sacrifices fun for fighting and sinks like a stone.

If you like Pirates of the Caribbean, you should really like The Bluff. It has the same kind of adventurous pirate atmosphere, strong performances, and a very solid cast. The acting is genuinely good and the story is engaging, which makes it an easy and enjoyable watch.Personally, I enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean, and I actually liked The Bluff even more. The cast does a great job and the performances carry the film in a way that keeps it entertaining from start to finish Honestly, if someone claims this movie is bad, I would be interested in understanding their motivations and personal biases. If someone liked Pirates of the Caribbean but dislikes this, the main difference is that the lead character / hero here is a woman. That makes me question whether the criticism is really about the quality of the movie or something else.

Priyanka Chopra brings a charismatic spark as a semi-action heroine, while Karl Urban delivers a menacingly effective performance as the antagonist. However, The Bluff squanders the increasingly rare pirate genre, its plot is muddled, character arcs are underdeveloped, motivations lack conviction, and the overall narrative falls into the trap of being overly formulaic.

ZERO personality in this movie. How is the Hero a badass?. How was the Villain a badass? Why are they good fighters? Are their fighting style different? Did the Hero and Villain even need to fight? Did our hero grow and learn from being a mother and her journey that she then used that knowledge to beat the Villain? Big ole SHRUG to all of that!
