This is a rom-com, formulaic and comforting and breezy, with some action trappings, but with no expectations that anyone needs to care about the results of that action.

The fast and furious action is a bit plasticky, but the two starry leads bring some real sparks.

Alas, you can spend nearly two hours watching the slick, cynical, vapid and brain-numbing actioner “Ghosted” on Apple TV+ and find yourself regretting the decision pretty much every predictable and overblown step of the way.

If you’re going to take a hugely familiar premise and rely on easy star chemistry to sell it, you really need the right stars in the right roles and a killer script for all the killing. Sadly this ain’t quite it.

The action is plentiful, but not particularly well-executed (though lots of extras are), and neither Mr. Evans nor Ms. Armas is really a comedian.

The film thinks fame alone is a substitute for wit or charm, and might just as well have outsourced every last role to a hologram.

This tedious, unfunny, screamingly unoriginal romantic adventure film is so flimsy and so insubstantial that it’s practically vaporous.

IN A NUTSHELL: A farmer falls in love with a woman who he learns is actually a spy for the CIA. Together, they’re swept off on a dangerous mission to save the world. Chris Evans stars in the movie and was one of the producers. The action flick was directed by Dexter Fletcher. The writing team included Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Chris McKenna.
Chris Evans and Ana de Armas starred together in Knives Out (2019) and The Gray Man (2022). THINGS I LIKED:
The cast is stellar and includes Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Anthony Mackie, Mike Moh, Amy Sedaris, Tate Donovan, multi-award nominee Tim Blake Nelson, and more.
I love it when movies reference other movies. In this one, Chris Evans’ character talks about The Exorcist.
The movie captures the fun and magic of meeting someone for the first time and being mesmerized by everything about them. Yep, I remember that feeling.
We get to travel to London! I’m going there in August! I’ve been there several times before, but my husband and I always love going back. We also get to travel to Pakistan and various cities in the USA in the film.
Fun and punchy musical soundtrack.
There’s a hilarious cameo performance but I don’t want to ruin it for you by telling you who it is. It’s at the 1-hour, 39-minute mark.
Some of the fight sequences are extremely entertaining and creative.
The family dynamics in Chris Evans’ character’s family are cute and fun. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
Was Ana de Armas wearing a wig? Her hair looked fake and super plastered in every scene.
Terrible dialogue.
It was a missed opportunity that Chris Evans’ character didn’t have a final wrestling showdown with one of the bad guys.
Another missed opportunity was not having a fun scene at the very end of the rolling credits. I love those.
The schtick is that Chris Evans’ character is supposed to be ill-equipped for the spy life, but he’s Captain America! While I’m a huge fan of Chris Evans, a goofier actor would have been more believable in this role. TIPS FOR PARENTS: A woman asks a man if he wants to get high with her on edibles.
A couple has a one-night stand. Later, we see them rolling around in the sheets.
Some blood
Gross torture with deadly bugs
Lots of violence and high dead-body count
People in perilous situations
Some crude conversations about sex.

When Cole (Chris Evans) meets Sadie (Ana de Armas) he thinks he’s found the girl of his dreams, but it soon transpires she’s hiding a big secret. Ghosted follows the now common formula of putting two good looking people together and throwing them into a series of action scenes interspersed with comedic quips. Thanks to the charm of the lead duo, it’s watchable enough, but it’s hard not to feel you’ve seen the same thing countless times already.

(Mauro Lanari)
Apple TV+'s most-watched film debut: and spend a little less money on the all-star cast and on the royalties of the very famous songs in the OST to give a little more of it to the screenwriters?
