Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Much of this R-rated movie is chaotic, yet it’s a richly hued, madly inventive, gleefully violent and happily slapdash contraption with a formidable female at its center.

Indeed, the best parts of Birds of Prey are the action sequences of the all-women team fighting together, but many of these scenes don't take place until the movie's second half.

Anything can happen, and Birds of Prey relishes in the havoc that implies. That manic energy is all that’s holding Birds of Prey together at times, and the fact that all of its characters seem to thrive in it makes it all the more disappointing that the movie doesn’t really take any time to get to know them better. It’s almost enough to derail the movie, but at a brisk hour and 47 minutes of genuinely fun spectacle, it’s hard to hold too much against it.

On a moment-by-moment level, the action in Birds Of Prey is compelling, drawing more from the Hong Kong style of unbroken takes designed to show off the choreography than the chaotic quick cuts of most American blockbusters.

It’s messy, with a middle section that sags, but Birds Of Prey has vibrancy, anarchy and balls to spare. Harley and Joker are dead. Long live Harley Quinn.

The movie is delightfully odd but not consistently inspired, often straining to rewrite the rules of superhero cinema, a mixture of good and bad ideas all mashed together. Where other comic-book movies lumber along with self-importance, this film is a breezy, amoral lark, which proves somewhat refreshing. But that’s not enough to allow Birds’ hit-or-miss pleasure to soar.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is more than horrible. It should not exist. Money should never have been raised for it. The screenplay should never have been filmed. Margot Robbie shouldn’t have produced it. She certainly shouldn’t have starred in it. It’s just a terrible thing to inflict on audiences, who, after all, didn’t hurt anyone and just hoped to have a nice time.

In the end, after almost two hours of watching, what remains of this film? Absolutely nothing. And when this happens, it's not a flaw, but it's not a good thing either. You simply have no memory of what you just saw.

Margot joins the list of DCEU actors that are fantastic as their character but displayed in piss poor films. This girl power, feminism slog of a film just added to the misery of the DCEU. It also followed in Shazams footsteps of showing us characters we have been introduced to, without showing us their face because the original actor had current beef with Warner Brothers. Ewan McGregor has a great turn out however as the bad guy Black Mask!

One of the worst movies I've seen. Cheesy and over the top with about 15min. of good footage.
