We get it Ricky Gervais, you're an atheist. Now I don't have anything against atheists or trying to address religion in a **** good God man have some subtlety. The obviousness of this movie is just shameless.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day0
Aug 23, 2013
So bad. It's just so damn bad. Not only is it full of the brainless, boring, somehow action-less actions scenes that The Boondock Saints are known for, but everything around those moments is just as terrible. Duffy's attempts at drama and intrigue are laughable. There is not a semblance of development or patience in his story telling. It's like he just said "I want this to happen now" and then just told all of the actors to do it instead of actually spending time and first ensuring that we are invested in the characters and their lives. And the **** **** unfunny. The only thing that is funny here is the acting which I can't even take seriously. This **** is just sloppy and amateurish. There is absolutely nothing good about it. It is painfully stupid. And the worst part about that is that it doesn't know it's stupid. It thinks it's good. It thinks that people are watching it and saying "Wow what he just said was cool" or "Isn't that plot twist awesome" but what most of them are really saying is "...please." As a non film-maker I would never say this about virtually any other movie because I understand that it's probably more difficult than I could **** I could make a better movie than this. In fact, there is no way that I would not if given the chance. Anybody with a brain or even one original thought could make something better than this. It is worthless. Of no value. Without a single redeeming quality or thing to appreciate. Garbage. Whoever contributed to this should be embarrassed.

A History of Violence9
Jul 22, 2013
This is a top-notch film. It is paced very well and the story is great. I was continuously waiting for the next development to find exactly what was going on. Combine all of this with great acting and you've got something really good.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead9

Awesome frickin' movie. Nobody captures the debilitating affects of stress and concern like Philip Seymour Hoffman. He and Ethan Hawke are both great here. This one is a ride. Loved it.

Gone Baby Gone5
Jul 22, 2013
It wasn't awful. I didn't find this movie to be boring at all. I enjoyed it because it managed to built suspense and raise curiosity about the resolution. But there are so many things holding Gone Baby Gone back. For one, it was confusing. Simple as that. Two, Casey Affleck. Not only was his character flat and uninteresting, but I also didn't buy a word he said, especially when he tried to be a tough guy with his fighting words and his pistol whipping. Every time he started intimidating guys in bars or giving some morally self-righteous speech about why other people are wrong I just said "Please." He was very much a typical protagonist in a Hollywood film and not at all a real person. Three, the scene when Ed Harris is questioning the mother in her house is just awful. It's full of cliches and pointless yelling (ex: Harris sweeping all the bottles off of the kitchen table in a burst of anger and then firmly slamming his palms on the table and demanding answers). And four, it is really a ridiculous plot when you think about it. Just listen to it (Spoiler Alert): A seventy something year old police chief looses his 12 year old daughter. Then he spends decades surrounded by the impoverished and unfortunate youth of the drug and violence ridden neighborhoods of Boston. So, for no reason, all of a sudden he decides to kidnap one random white girl and take her home after forty years of never doing anything like that even though he's seen kids lives go down the drain ever day. Not only that, it wasn't really his idea. It was suggested to him by some other cop (Harris) who also seems to gain this desire to "give a kid a chance" out of nowhere. And the other main cop involved (Affleck) has a seemingly healthy relationship with his girlfriend. But that relationship ends with no discussion or second thoughts when they have a minor ethical disagreement even though they both meant well. Also, for some reason, this also boring and undeveloped character **** cries herself to sleep every night when she thinks the little girl is dead, even though she never met this girl and has only been on the case for a few days. The same unrealistic emotion seems to exist with the aforementioned police chief and his wife when they kidnap the "lost" girl. After keeping her for a week, they are all of a sudden unable to be separated form her and the cops have to pry the child from the wife's arms while she breaks down in tears. In the end, it entertained me and made me **** I didn't buy any of it.

Sling Blade9
Jan 11, 2013
I had a few little problems with Sling Blade, and I thought there were one or two highly unnecessary scenes and characters. But that is not even close to enough to make me give this a bad review. Billy Bob is movie magic here. His captivating performance of one of the most well-developed characters in movie history is something that I couldn't take my eyes off of. As a kind-spirited, mentally handicapped wanderer with seemingly no emotional response to murdering...Karl is a special feat of film making. I feel like if I said more I would spoil it. So I won't Great movie... although I do feel that it could have been a little more badass.

The Fighter8
Jan 11, 2013
This is not just another underdog boxing story. It's more so about the dynamics of family, more specifically, a chaotic and at times detestable family. And it is incredibly real. There is no fluff here. Just all of the love, frustration and difficulty that comes with life's web of human relationships when things don't always go your way. It's entertaining and the characters are so much fun to watch. Great acting from everyone, especially Christian Bale who gave just about as convincing a portrayal of an individual as I've ever seen in film.

Beasts of the Southern Wild5
Jan 11, 2013
This could have been so much greater if it wasn't so full of itself. I'm all for ambition and pushing boundaries, but if you're going to do ****'t do so haphazardly. It's a shame because the characters and their situation is great story material, and the film is very well acted. But it's all intermingled with a heavy dose of metaphorical **** and artsy nonsense that, in my opinion, doesn't land. And it really stopped this movie from being gold. Sometimes, directors should just keep it simple. This is a good example of that in my humble opinion.

Lincoln5
Jan 1, 2013
I was very disappointed. Daniel Day-Lewis was his usual amazing self. And the acting as a whole was top notch. But other than that, I found Lincoln to be severely lacking. There was no portrayal of Abraham Lincoln the man. There was no examination of his heavily documented depression, his unstable marriage, his tumultuous family life, his suicidal thoughts, his emotions, his demons, his joys, his passions, his personality, his psyche or his existence as a human being. There was no portrait of life in America during the civil war. No representation of the state, it's people or the condition that it was in during this historic period. In fact, the war only appeared in the form of quick mentions here and there. It was, essentially, a play-by-play analysis for the political struggle to pass the 13th amendment. A play-by-play analysis which was rather hard to follow and frankly, quite boring at times. Overall, I was upset that this movie did not have more depth, did not have more wonder and did not have more life. It's worth a watch, but thoroughly unfulfilling.

50/509
Dec 3, 2012
One of the more seamless blends of drama and comedy that I have ever seen. Throughout the entire film I found myself prepared to cry as well as prepared to laugh. In that way it was very much like...well...life. 50/50 is engaging, humorous, touching, heartfelt and uplifting. Very, very nice movie.

Welcome to the Rileys10
Nov 26, 2012
I completely fell in love with this. And, even though it is generally well received, I am truly astonished that it has gotten even a noticeable amount of lackluster reviews. I do not see what is not to like. All three of the main actors/actresses are real all the way down to the marrow, the story unfolds very smoothly with all of the passion, humor and soulfulness that one may find in real life, and what I really adore about Welcome to the Riley's is that at no point did I feel as though I was being told a tale. It wasn't like watching a movie. It was more like watching a documentary. Because everything from the smallest facial expressions, to the most insignificant gestures is just saturated with texture and emotion. It's the quick and thoughtless remarks that the characters make, and the angles of certain glimpses of camera work that allow us, the audience, to understand what is really going on underneath all of the outward doings and occurrences. I was invested, I was interested, I was engaged and I cared about everything that was happening in this fictional world that died in two hours. Aspiring filmmakers, take notes. This is how you make something memorable and evocative. Truly touching. Moving in more ways than one. And even though nothing really sad happens during the course of the film...I almost found my self crying from the sheer humanity. Brilliant. Wonderful. Special.

Has Clint Eastwood played similar characters before? Yes. But with such mesmerizing abilities as a director, and a powerful hand at story **** cares? Underrated film. Great.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse5
Nov 21, 2012
Suffers from the noticeably lazy writing and insufferable, repetitive dialog that comes with movies about fanatic teen pop culture trends. So, basically the same type of **** you could expect from the Twilight series. But the character development is a little stronger, it's shot competently, and it's got some action, emotion and anticipation. An enjoyable **** nothing to remember.

Invictus5
Nov 13, 2012
Good, but could have been so much better. Morgan Freeman was shining as Nelson Mandela. Unfortunately, this performance was wasted on what turned into a typical, cliched sports movie. I understand that there was more to the story than the rugby team. But none of that emerged. It was simply mentioned while we watched Matt Damon and company go through the ups and downs of winning and losing games. The strong acting saves Invictus from being a huge and total disappointment.

Signs9
Nov 13, 2012
I watch this every chance I get. As far as alien invasion fiction goes, this is not the most intricate or the most compelling. In fact, somehow, the alien's are a rather second-hand element in the film. It's more so about the family dynamics in a widowers household. The extra-terrestrial warfare is just the impetus that nudges them into situations where their personal stories can unfold and their deepest emotions can surface among one another. Directed with tact and steadfastness, acted with precision and beautifully paced to create an extremely hypnotizing atmosphere. Not to mention, infectiously hilarious on several occasions. This is a showcase in how to infuse subtle humor into a story. The jokes are super easy to miss and may very well go right over the heads of some which is unfortunate. But, by the same token, the quietness of all the funny along with the dimly lit environment in which it is placed really allows for it to illuminate like a firefly in the night sky and be a million times funnier than it would be in an in-your-face, no holds bar type of comedy. Highly enjoyable.

Mystic River9
Nov 13, 2012
Friggin' yes! A mid-tempo and ominous thrill ride, overcast from beginning to end by a shadow of dark things to come. Also, one of the best acting ensembles I've seen. Clint Eastwood is the man, and Mystic River is just another sparkling example.

Mean Girls7
Nov 13, 2012
One of those movies that isn't incredibly hilarious, isn't incredibly interesting and isn't incredibly **** is just enough of all of those things to make you watch it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. The fact that Lindsay Lohan was an absolute dime doesn't hurt either.

The Hurt Locker10
Nov 12, 2012
Oh my God! One of the most perfect movies I've ever known. You could probably split this thing in half, and make two great works of cinema. There is so much suspense and drama packed into each and every beautifully shot scene that it almost calls forth the sweat on your brow. I ventured further onto the edge of my seat than I knew was humanly possible. When these soldiers are attempting to diffuse mysterious explosives, it almost feels like your well-being is in the balance as well. This long, exhilarating piece is just pumping at the edges with pounds upon pounds of heart-racing, pipe-bursting tension. The Hurt Locker is slow, punishing and weighs down upon you with a pressure that you don't want to stop. Masterful cinematography, directing, acting and vision. Everything is flawlessly clear both visually and intellectually. At no point did I find myself asking about the plot or wondering why something happened. It carries the mark **** movie which is, you come close to forgetting that it is a movie at all. It becomes real. It leaves you utterly and hopelessly captivated. This was a film made with clarity, vigilance and purpose. So damn good I can't stand it. One for the ages.

The Nightmare Before Christmas10
Nov 12, 2012
Unbelievably inspired, original and honestly a feast for the eyes. My only qualm is that the movie is a bit short and not very climactic, but when the universe beyond the screen is so full of beautiful imagery, emotional musical numbers, and tenderness, it's difficult not to get lost. When everything is so imaginative and alive, pulsating with wonder, it's hard to be anything but captivated. And when the scenery before you is so enchanting that you dream of reaching out a fingertip so as to touch another world, it's impossible not to fall in love.

Adventureland8
Nov 12, 2012
As a 22 year old heterosexual male I feel like a **** for saying this, but I really like movies about teen romance. That is, when they are well crafted and realistic. Adventureland is both of those things. I don't know what it is but this youthful, hopeful, adventurous, down to earth, everyday life lined with a grimy edge of raunchiness kind of film gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. I would never say something like this to my friends because they would call me a fa*got then beat me to a pulp using pillowcases filled with bars of soap. But what I would say to them is that I find Kristen Stewart to be sexy in a low-down, trash-gutter, dirty little scum bag weasel kind of way. Anyway...eight stars.

Click7
Nov 12, 2012
I am going to say something that may come across as ridiculous. But I think that Click is **** a way. Is it a masterpiece? No. But the way that it starts off as a 100%, silly, nonsensical, easy-going, childish comedy and then slowly rises into a deeply saddening story of loss, grief and waste is truly heart-wrenching. As an audience member I was totally unaware to the wave of emotion that was on its way to sweep me away in a river of tears. It really was overwhelming and succeeded in putting life into perspective. Although there were plenty of laughs along the way, the real diamond of this film is its heart. Maybe the most surprisingly touching movie I have ever had the good fortune of seeing.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon4
Nov 12, 2012
The plot is full of cop outs. But it is what you would expect from a motion picture based off of a young adult novel. The way I see it, at least these movies aren't boring and I find the darkened tint of this world to be somewhat enchanting.
Nov 12, 2012
Snow White and the Huntsman5
Nov 12, 2012
Typical in ways, and largely predictable. Basically this is the same lazy, uninspired, cliched, dime a dozen thoughtlessness that comes annually with high-budget Hollywood productions. But, if you ask me, that's not as bad as it sounds. It looks cool, it's exciting and everyone is beautiful. As shallow as it may sound, I like those things. Sue me.

No Country for Old Men9
Nov 11, 2012
The beauty of this movie is the simplicity. One guy has the suitcase full of money, other guy wants the suitcase full of money and so begins a chase interwoven with a hurricane of tension. Just watching the creativity with which these two characters try to best one another is enthralling in itself. The entire movie is slow, quiet and irresistible. Great acting and brilliant directing. Overall, I would describe No Country for Old Men as a dark and sinister pleasure.
Nov 11, 2012
There Will Be Blood3
Nov 11, 2012
The acting is superb and Daniel-Day Lewis is captivating as always. But I had to drag myself through this one. It has it's moments, but overall There Will Be Blood is a like a never ending desert highway riddled with pot holes and tumbleweeds. Long winded, dry and not an inkling of refuge in sight. If only they would have whittled it down to a neat and simple package, this could have been great. But as it stands, snooze fest.
Nov 10, 2012
Ponyo8
Nov 10, 2012
Somehow, the word "charming" just doesn't say it. Unbearably cute and sweet, but also deeply beautiful at times. And, interestingly enough, while watching this I stumbled upon some of the most subtle, unexpected and delightfully out-of-place humor that I've ever had the pleasure of encountering in all my years of watching movies. And that factor of surprise makes these slipped in little jokes all the more funny. I would even go so far as to say that there are some moments in Ponyo that are hilarious. Also, one thing I love about Hayao Miyazaki is that, no matter how unrealistic or fantastic his stories get, he never explains any of it. None of the fable-like creatures or enchanted play lands are rationalized or given credibility. They simply exist, and I find that wonderful. I'm glad that he approaches his animation that way, and I'm glad that he made no exception in Ponyo. It's kind. It's warm. And it is a treasure.
Nov 9, 2012
Blue Velvet3
Nov 9, 2012
I give Blue Velvet a 3 because it does manage to invest its audience from the other side of the screen. But I really didn't like this. It was weird for the sake of being weird. It seemed to be riddled with lazy attempts at symbolism which were far from translated to the viewer (or at least this viewer). And at times it was unsettling for no reason. Not like the kind of unsettling that invigorates your insides and leaves you amazed. But the type of unsettling that just gives you a very unpleasant experience that you simply want to end. I found it to be a film that tried too hard and was even a bit pretentious. Not for moi.
Nov 9, 2012
The Dark Knight7
Nov 9, 2012
Without Heath Ledger, this movie would've been forgotten the second it left theaters. It's a solid flick without him. But he was the reason that my eyes were glued to the TV. When The Joker was on screen, my heart rate slowed and my hairs stood on end. When he was off screen, I was simply waiting for him to appear again. Goosebumps.
