Originally a festival fave in 2018, this film became a sizable success during the pandemic benefitting from great reviews ( 94% RT) and a solid audience score. The film is an intense, sometimes frustrating, simplistic theater that focuses on a young woman moving cross country who comes up against as serial killer. It's a survival thriller that takes a bit to find it's stride but when it does is quite impressive. Filmed beautifully with a solid lead performance this stylish horror flick is slick, escapist entertainment. I expect great things from the director and actress moving forward. ***.5/5

2020 has been a drag to say the least. Everyone is down from the years events and the pandemic and the holidays seem to be a bust. So here comes Ryan Murphy's joyous old school musical based on the broadway show. Featuring a barrage of wonderful stars. The film centers on a young gay woman whose not being allowed to fully participate in her prom by the PTA. So some broadway celebrities with bad pr travel to the town to rectify the situation for some supposed selfless headlines. The movie is just a blast of positive energy with great performances by Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Randall, Michael Keegan, newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman and most surprisingly James Gorden who delivers a wonderful and engaging performance. Directed with creative zest by Ryan Murphy of Glee and American Horror Story. The film features dazzling choreography, a great soundtrack and wonderful musical numbers. I wish I could have seen this in theaters but it's still an amazing cinematic experience. It's funny and sad and it's just the experience we need right now. An energetic, inspired, campy, fun explosion of epic proportions. One of the best films of the year. ****.5/5

2020 has brought us many things film wise. It hasn't been the greatest year and there's really no need to rush out to the theaters for this. But the film is a reminder of a simpler time when entertaining three hankie romantic dramas such as this would crowd multiplexes. Conceptually it's pretty generic and all the cliches are in place but the attractive and talented stars make it worth the watch. Jessica Rothe of Happy Death Day and Harry Shum Jr. Of Glee have awesome chemistry. The film tells the true story of a couple who are about to get married when they discover one of them has cancer. The movie is funny, moving and sad and as an added bonus at the end we meet the real couple. Sure I wished for just a bit more originality but was happy with this endearing little gem. ***.5/5

Originally intended for theatrical release this charming LGBT Christmas movie explores the struggles many of us gay people face when it comes to our families and the holiday season. Starring Kristen Stewart as one half of a lesbian couple who is invited by her girlfriend played by Mackenzie Davis of Terminator Dark Fate to spend the holidays with her family. Along the way she tells her that the family doesn't know shes gay or that she's bringing her girlfriend. Funny scenarios as well as heart wrenching ones ensue. The movie is quite refined in the way it explores its subject matter and for that reason, that's what sets it apart. The brilliant Dan Levy of the phenomenal Schitts Creek stars as Stewart's gay bff. Mary Steenburgen (book club), Allison Brie (Glow), Victor Garber and an awesome Aubrey Plaza also star. The film is director confidently by one of my favorite actresses Clea Duvall. It's definitely a must see. ****.25/5

Awesome, original teen flick about kids that start to explode senior year is charming, hilarious, a little scary and wonderfully refreshing. Starring Katheryn Langford (Love Simon) as a young woman who finds love with a charming loner played by a charming Charlie Plummer during this odd epidemic. The movie treats it's subject matter in a very genuine, smart way so it's never a full horror tinged comedy but more of a horrible event happening to funny people. Engaging and edge of your seat, its definitely one of the year's best films. ****.5/5

Cutie Dylan O'Brien of MTV'S Teen Wolf and the Maze Runner franchise stars in this dystopian Horror fantasy. Some time in the future an asteroid heads towards the earth and is blown up but the nuclear fallout ends up mutating all bug and animal life which puts humans at the bottom of the food chain. Joel (O'Brien) discovers that his girlfriend is alive and 85 miles away. So he leaves his colony and makes the trek there fighting monsters and befriending a dog along the way. The movie feels very refreshing in its subject matter and execution. It's got charm, style and a charasmatic, engaging leading man. Although I never fully bought into the romance I loved the live action "Manga" feel of the material. It's fun, energetic and feels very much like something new. ****/5 Eric: ***.75/5

Originally intended for release in theaters this smart, intense thriller was sold to hulu and premiered Friday. The brilliant Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) stars as the mother of a supposedly sick child that she's spent 17 years taking care of her. The young woman Chloe, played by solid newcomer Kiera Allen begins to suspect her mother may be the one keeping her sick. The movie is intense and edge of your seat filled with clever twists and turns. Although the material is familiar its executed creatively by Aneesh Chaganty of the criminally underseen Searching. This would have been great in theaters but is still damn good at home. ****/5 Eric: ****.5/5

What seems like a sure fire scare fest is let down by amateur execution. It's a mix of bad performances and somewhat embarrassing cgi. It does however manage a few effective shocks. In this case it's quite frustrating because all of the pieces are there, they just never connect in a satisfying, unexpected way. What's left is an overly mediocre blend of Lights out, Mama and the Babadook that never really finds an identity of its own.

A woman helps a gay friend find love with his crush on a dating website by posting his profile with a pic of her hot ex. But problems arise when her ex arrives and they have to keep the charade up. Although it's really more of the same this is the best entry yet. The two leads have good chemistry, although all of the performances leave something to be desired. There's lots more eye candy this time around and the movies even more raunchy. Hunky Chris Salvatore is a welcome edition and underneath all the whoriness is a heart. 7/10

A gay man and his two girl friends hatch a plan to discover a sexy male model's orientation. Kyle the male member of the trio takes the model to a seminar about "going straight" and hijinks ensue. This is a bit more entertaining than the first and like that one it's funny and sexy with a bunch of eye candy. Although it's all quite predictable its more than amusing and is another somewhat successful entry in the growing **** sex comedy franchise. 6.5/10

In this raunchy everything sex comedy a man falls for a girl. However his roomie makers her believe he's gay to get close to her hottie gay bestie whose into her new guy. It's pretty slutty but also sexy, sassy and funny. It's entertaining with pretty bad performances but it all works well enough for the guilty pleasure sex comedy that it is. Some of the side characters like Tiffani make it more entertaining by adding some much needed spice. But the actress who plays Gwen is quite annoying. All in all it's amusing but nothing groundbreaking. 6/10

Olivia Newton John headlines this **** musical classic about a muse that falls in love with her target. A fabulous record album artist who decides with a stranger to open up a roller skating rink with magical results. Or at least I think that is what it's about. The whole movie is like being high on shrooms. It's super colorful and wonderfully gay. But besides a visual feast and a great soundtrack nothing's really going on. It tries desperately to connect the muicals of yesterday and modern day at the time but never finds the right vibe. The charachters are pretty but lack personality and depth and so does the story. On that aspect it was really hard for me to be completely engaged. That being said my fiancee and best friend love this movie and will probably murder me after reading it, so I'll end on a positive note. It's pretty and fun.

A serial killer dressed as a hot unicorn strikes horror in West Hollywood when he targets a group of friends. It's a fairly generic setup with a **** twist. The acting is not great but the movie is surprisingly fun with some cool kills. The movie obviously struggles with budgetary constraints but makes good on what it has which includes a super campy and fun villain. 6.5/10

I love revisiting all these classics I haven't seen since they were released. The Trip was always one that really touched me. Plot wise there's nothing new here but the performers are adorable, talented and they have great chemistry. The film chronicles the love story between two men who meet under odd circumstances when one of them is supposedly straight. Over the years their relationship deepens and than something tears them apart. Years later one of them receives word that the other is very sick and abandons his life to rush and spend whatever time is left with the other. The movie is funny and sad, really sad. In fact the finale is one of the biggest tearjerkers ever. It's definitely worth a watch. 8.5/10

Written and directed by Dan Gilroy of Nightcrawler this is a unique film unlike anything you've ever seen for better or worse. The aptly titled Velvet Buzzsaw stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), Toni Colette (Hereditary), Renee Russo (Ransom), Zawee Ashton (Nocturnal Animals), Tom Sturidge (On the Road), John Malkovich (Red), Billy Magnussen (Game Night) and Natalie Dyer (Stranger Things). It's an awesome cast in a movie that works as a dissection of the Art world. The vapid, hollowness of exchange. The charachters and storyline are more symbolic than actually fully realized entities. The movie isn't completely successful at all its endeavors but it's ambition is intriguing and the results are polarizing. It's no doubt a horror film but it's definitely an indie art film as well combined with a hefty budget and stylish direction. This is definitely a film you will either like or hate but I was definitely a fan. 7/10

Alot of people hate on this movie. But since it has come out on my birthday in the summer of 1999 I've loved it. I know it's goofy. But it's one of the only big budget Hollywood scare fests. And although it's not very scary or even very suspenseful it lacks something genre films desperately need, it's absolute fun. A genuine rush of pure entertainment. Starring Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, Owen Wilson and scene stealer Catherine Zeta Jones. The film centers on a group of characters who are unwittingly participating on a study on fear in a giant grotesquely beautiful mansion with a sketchy past. The film is not subtle at all and when the floodgates of paranormal activity begin. It's a barrage of CGI that has everything from furniture to stone sculptures springing to life and attacking. Like I said before the movie it's a ton of fun and a truly rare example of an imaginative Hollywood reimagining with a budget so that the director of Speed and Twister can do everything his little heart desires. One of my faves. Budget: $80M Box Office: $180M 9/10

This weird avant garde gay zombie movie is unlike anything you've ever seen for better or worse. It's confusing but I think it's about a crew shooting a gay zombie movie that comes upon a cute emo undead twink named Otto. It follows his adventures as he roams the countryside hooking up with randos and culminating in a big orgy. Like I said it's really odd. There is however a certain grotesque charm about it all. The film is definitely a metaphor for the aimlessness of youth and sexual hunger. It's not a porn but it is kinda soft core. There are **** but usually they're in undead stomachs. It's overly gory and overtly campy but the film manages to work well enough if only for originality. 6.25/10

This is my favorite Rob Schneider movie. I know that's not saying much but I just happen to love this in. Even though I know it's kinda awful. It centers on a young woman played by Rachel McAdams ( Notebook) who steals a set of cursed earrings and ends up switching bodies with a petty criminal. When she awakes as Schneider she reaches out to her disbelieving best friend played by a hilarious Anna Farris (Scary Movie) and they try and discover how to solve it with a group of misfits all the while dodging her hot boyfriend played by a smoking Matthew Lawrence. It's hilarious and overly silly and although most of the humor is in bad taste this is one of those rare times that it just works. Budget: $34M Box Office: $54.6M 8/10

Back in 1995 Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) unleashed his criminally misunderstood high trash masterpiece. I remember I was 16 when it came out and I was only allowed to see it because I worked at the theater. I was quite popular in school because I would sneak my friends in with me. I had no idea how much the film would make an impact on my life. From my humor to my writing, my dancing and the way I view films in general. Now don't get me wrong the film is indeed bad in almost every fathomable way. From its ridiculously over the top performances to the ultra cliched storyline and odd directorial touches. The film centers on Nomi played by a perfectly ferocious Elizabeth Berkley (Saved by the bell) who lands in Las Vegas in hopes of becoming a professional dancer but ends up in a seedy exotic club. But after a series of events she lands in a big, topless show at the Flamingo. And before she knows it shes thrust into a dark world of ambition where everything is for sale. What makes the film so great is the intensity in which everything is delivered. Because it takes itself so seriously it's easy to enjoy the unintentional funnies. Of which the film is filled with along with lots of nudity, sex and even a crazy fight scene. It's a soap opera on cocaine with Red bull thrown in. There will never be anything else like it and that's why it's one of my favorite movies. Budget: $45M Box Office: $37.8M 9/10

Based on the true story of the gangsters the Kray brothers the film should have been a perfect showcase for hunky Tom Hardys creative range and talent. Instead it's a half realized piece of Hollywood entertainment that never goes deep enough to be anything spectacular. Tracing the events of the rise of their criminal empire it also shows the abuse one of their wives endures. Props to the makers for keeping the gay element intact but for the most part it's kept off screen. Still for gangster movie fans especially it's a fun, engaging flick that's sadly forgettable. And as for Hardy, he's great but there's not such a huge difference between the characters that it's as impressive as it could have been. Budget: $25M Box Office: $43M 7/10

A man decides to come out to his group of bros with interesting and funny results. Things of course change but they try and be their most accommodating by taking him to gay clubs and even on double dates. But an accidental misreading tears the group apart and he does his best to bring them all together. All the while trying to find someone of his very own. The movie is fun and heartfelt but there's nothing really new here. The approach is however refreshing and the film feels genuine. 7/10

Continuing my Pride month marathon I finally got around to this splendid gay film after lots of reccomendations. Centering around a young man named Zach who begins hanging out with his best friends gay brother played by hunky Brad Rowe (Billy's Hollywood screen kiss). At first the two bond over surfing but it soon becomes something more as Zach has to deal with not only the effect of his relationship but the courage to pursue the life he wants. There's really nothing new here but it's done very well. The film is beautifully shot with solid chemistry from its leads and the story has a genuine, relatable feel due to the elevated, confident direction. 8/10

This is one of my favorite LGBTQ films. Mostly because it's just so damn entertaining but also because it's quite painful to watch for personal reasons. It's simplistic in it's plotting as two gay men are set up on a blind date and hate eachother. But as their friends get engaged they are pushed into each others lives and opposites attract. The cast is great all around and the movies take on the subgenre is refreshing and genuine with no easy outs. It leaves an impression far after the credits roll. The film is sexy, romantic and really funny. A hidden gem that deserves a watch. 8.5/10

The director of Pet Sematary slums it with this awesomely trashy teen thriller. It centers around a young woman recently released from a mental institution. Her doctor gets her a job at his club. A place for the rich and bored filled with some really mean pretty people. She of course becomes entangled with them because she's sexy and than finds herself discovering a dark secret they would kill to protect. The movie is pure trash and it's not shy about it. This elevated lifetime flick is overly predictable but there's a reason they make so many of these movies. It's because when they work, they're fun as hell. Plus it all leads up to a truly epic girlfight in evening gowns, heels and even a pool. So if this seems like your kind if movie. Seek it out, trust me it's worth the effort. Budget: $15M Box Office: $5M 7/10

I love the Chainsaw franchise, the original is my favorite horror film of all time. I'd be lying if I didn't say its definitely an uneven group of films and this entry is on the lower end of it's cinematic totem pole. After the stylish, kinetic rush of Michael Bay's surprisingly great remake my hopes were high for this prequel. Walking out I enjoyed it but definitely found the whole experience to be darker and not as effective. In a sense the film was a buzz kill. Now anyone familiar with the franchise knows this wasn't gonna be a pretty picture with a well rounded finale especially considering it's predecessor. But in this entry the origin of the Hewitt's are explored and some of the questions are answered sometimes with an unintentionally goofy tone but always dismal. The film centers around two brothers and their girlfriends celebrating their last days of freedom before they are drafted to Vietnam. The performances from the main people are solid all around with a powerful turn from LGBTQ icon Matt Bomer and another from the gorgeous Jordanna Brewster( Fast and Furious). The movie takes a bit too long to get going but it is sadistic and overly brutal, at times unnecessarily so. Still it's a solid, grotesque piece of slasher entertainment even though it's kind of an expected downer. Budget: $16M Box Office: $52M 7.25/10

*SPOILER* This is a brilliant but totally divisive horror film amongst genre fans. Originally titled Switchblade Romance Lionsgate picked up the release along with House of 1000 Corpses to rope in starved horror audiences. Sadly the domestic release had awful dubbing but the goods were still there. It centers around two young women Marie and Alexia who are driving into the French countryside to spend time with family and do some studying. Late at night they are attacked by a brutal serial killer who kills Alexia's family including her little brother and takes her hostage. Marie is the only one to get away and chooses to follow the man which leads us to some of the most intense sequences ever seen in the genre. As the movie barrels towards it's fierce climax we suddenly are made aware that Marie is the actual villain and we've been experiencing the film through her minds eye. This is what pushes people off alot because they feel very misled. But in my opinion the twist really works and even enhances the proceedings because Marie has a romantic crush on Alexia and because of her inability to be honest about her feelings it has led her to create a violent persona as an outlet. Sure it's a lot to bite but it's quite intriguing. Also splatter movie fans won't be disappointed because theres a multitude of impressive cringe worthy practical effects and waves of the red stuff. Cecille De France is amazing as Marie making the character feel genuine on every front. And as for the direction from future star film maker Alexander Aja the movie is an inspired work of genre cinema showing a ton of promise and a truly refreshing outlook. Budget: $2.5M Box Office: $6.8M 8.5/10

After the surprise success of the original film there was no question that there would be a follow up. The thing is they left off the original in such a state that it was kind of hard to continue on in a way that would be as simplistic and creepy as the first. The result is a film that's not scary by any means but has a few jump scares and a whole lot of unnecessary backstory. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey and even Lin Shaye are back as they try and conjure up a way to get Dad back to normal. Wilson has some creepy effeminate bits thrown into his performance and the cast try as hard as they can. There's just a bit too much going on and it's all just a little too pretentious. That being said we know Wan and Bousman have done better and will do much better things. But as for Insidious 2 it's not awful just overly mediocre. I do however appreciate the odd "Sleepaway Camp" twist it gave the proceedings a much needed spark of life. Budget: $5M Box Office: $161.9M 5.5/10

The Rotten Tomatoes score for this is Shockingly low at 11%. I definitely think it's time for a critical revisit because the movie has become such a cult classic. It centers around a group of popular teen girls in high school. The Alpha played by a perfectly poisonous Rose McGowan (Scream). Rebecca Gayheart (Urban Legend) the nice one and Julie Benz (TV's Buffy) as the ditzy follower. They play an unfortunate prank on their girlfriend and she chokes on a large Jawbreaker. They try and cover it up while the Alpha takes it to questionable lengths. It's a darkly humorous teen flick that's now better than ever. Filled with quotable dialogue and one hell of a lead performance from McGowan. It's fun, disturbing and hilarious in all the right ways. Judy Greer (Halloween 2018) stars as Fern a witness they give a makeover, Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) as the feisty detective and Carol Kane (Scrooged) as the kooky principal. Even Marilyn Manson shows up for a cameo. Budget: $3.5M Box Office: $3.1M 8.25/10

What is there to say that hasn't been said about this masterpiece. It's the ultimate guilty pleasure that's so wrong it's right. It's definitely a movie that shouldn't have ever worked by any means but by some cinematic miracle it does and brilliantly so. You know the story, a recently engaged couple Brad played by a sexy Barry Bostwick and Janet played by the iconic Susan Sarandon are traveling home from a friend's wedding and their car breaks down. So they head out in the rain and come upon a giant haunted looking mansion. Upon arriving they are greeted by a creepy and fabulous brother sister duo and than they meet the doctor a "sweet transvestite" played the charasmatic and timeless Tim Curry. Filled with amazing songs and an abundance of infinite creativity. Rocky Horror picture show is one of the best films ever made and should never try and be remade (let's forget about Fox's travesty). It's an undeniable classic of epic proportions and has one of the biggest and deserved cult fan bases of all time. Budget: $1.4M Box Office: $140.2M 10/10

Ultimately I think this movie is a guilty pleasure but it's just so damn entertaining mostly in a trashy sort of way. Julia Roberts stars as a food critic who begins pining for her hunky best friend played by Dermot Mulroney (Wedding Date) after he announces his engagement to a bubbly and layered Cameron Diaz (Mask). And by pining I mean trying to destroy their wedding. All the actors are in top form here Julia Roberts is so great in against type form and Cameron Diaz is fantastically charming but it's Rupert Everett as Roberts's gay best friend who steals the show. He's charming, handsome, charasmatic and so hilarious. All in all it's a fun flick that's has a surprising emotional resonance elevated of course by it's fine cast. Despite slightly sloppy direction. Budget: $38M Box Office: $299.3M 8.5/10

When I first saw this film in my adolescence I have to admit I wasn't a very big fan. I found it to be depressing and a bit droll. After revisiting it so many years later I have a slightly better opinion of it. Looking at it with different eyes I appreciate aspects of it that I didn't before. If you haven't seen this **** classic it tells the story of a single gay dad who hasn't seen his son in ages and gets contracted by his former wife to do a drag show at a resort in the middle of the desert. The man is surprisingly Hugo Weaving of the Matrix films and he brings along his two friends. An aging transvestite whose just lost her lover played by a solid Terence Stamp and a flirty, young, charasmatic drag queen played by a surprisingly engaging and sexy Guy Pearce of Memento. The film tracks their journey across the desert and all the mishaps that go along with it. In the end I definitely enjoyed it more but it left me wanting a bit more character and story development. That being said it's still a wild, fun stylish ride with a great soundtrack. Budget: $2M Box Office: $29.7M 7/10

Oh where to begin with this delightfully ****, horror comedy thriller. Drag Queen/Actress Charles Busch (Die Mommie Die) stars as a cop on the case of some teens getting chopped on the beach. The wonderfully weird Lauren Ambrose (Six feet under) stars as Chicklet a young woman who wants to be down the beach studs and wants to learn how to surf. She's also got multiple personalities. Sexy Nicholas Brendan (TV's Buffy), hunky Thomas Gibson, gorgeous Matt Keeslar (Scream 3), Nick Cornish (TV'S Buffy), Andrew Levitas (Hellbent) also star. But the most surprising is a young Oscar nominee Amy Adam's (American Hustle). The movie is fun and goofy and weird. It's a wild ultra campy gem. 7.25/10

Ageless hunk Paul Rudd (Clueless) and Steve Coogan (Philomena) star as an older gay couple who suddenly inherit a child. The child belongs to Coogans a.k.a Erasmus son played by sexy Jake McDorman (Greek) after being arrested. They live an R rated lifestyle but it's hilarious to watch them curb their ways and form a bond. It's not a wholly original concept but it's never been explored in this context. And that's definitely a plus because it's nice to see films of this context being explored with an lgbtq couple. It's hilarious, genuine and heartfelt. Rudd and Coogan are magic and it's all overly entertaining. 8.5/10

I wasn't sure what to expect when seeing it. There's been so much build up after watching Drag Race and Pose. I hate to say Viewing it now it was a touch disappointing. Don't get me wrong I loved the exploration of the Ballroom culture and gay people of color. But after seeig so much it feels a little shorted. It's definitely an intriguing look at the time period and how these people lived their lives and what happened to them. It's a documentary and is effective as a "slice of life". At the time when it was released and even now it shows a side to our story that's criminally underseen and under represented and for that it was and continues to be such a huge success. 6/10

This is a coming of age tale like no other. It's the story of two friends Franky and Ballas. The night after celebrating Frankys 16th birthday something happens that leads to Ballas fleeing from the house. The situation is unclear and when Franky returns to school Ballas has told everyone that Franky sexually assaulted him. Franky is confused but deals with the situation by retreating into himself. As the film goes along secrets come to light and Franky begins to come of age. It's a truly unique story and I don't want to ruin anything by saying too much. But the film stood long with me after the credits rolled. It's such a genuine, heartfelt exploration of youth and a discovery of where someone stands in the world. It's truly a groundbreaking film that deserves to be seen. 9/10

The combination **** novel, John Wick creator David Leitch and bad ass Charlize Theron coming off of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome set expectations above normal. So it's no big surprise that it left me a touch disappointed. It's a cold war spy thriller taking place in the 80s before the fall of the Berlin wall. It's one twist after another with some truly impressive fight scenes. The movie is ultra stylish with a great soundtrack but that's really where the goods end. It's a lot of style with not alot of substance. There's definitely a story here but it's executed in such a confusing manner it feels a bit sloppy. But all in all its marginally entertaining and engaging if only for the style, solid performances from Charlize Theron (Monster), sexy James McAvoy (Split), hunky Bill Skarsgard (It) and screen siren Sofia Boutella (Climax) and some unforgettable fight choreography. Budget: $30M Box Office: $100M 6.5/10

I stumbled upon this little gem for Pride month. Alex Lawther of the end of the f***ing world stars as Billy Bloom a creative and talented young man who finds himself living with his father in a middle American town filled with homophobia. Regardless of what anyone thinks he stays true to himself. After a vicious attack he is saved by the school quarterback and a friendship begins. The boy, Flip is played by the adorable Ian Nelson of the boy next door, tries to help him fit in better but he's commited to being his genuine self. Diva Bette Midler (Beaches) stars as his mother and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Anna Sophia Robb (Bridge to Terebithia), Celia Watson (Invasion) and Willa Fitzgerald (MTV's Scream) also star. It's a fun, emotional coming of age flick that's not perfect but is definitely worth a watch. 7.25/10

With the threat of a new version I decided to revisit this childhood classic of mine which actually inspired me and my friends to try goth for a couple months, or maybe it was just me, lol. Well the movie holds up surprisingly well and some part of that may be due to nostalgia but I really loved it, maybe even more than before. Robin Tunney(End of Days) stars as Sara the new girl at school who falls into a group of outcast witches after being burned by the popular kids. Once she joins the coven the stars align and they begin to experience some real power. The only problem is the maniacal and charasmatic leader Nancy played by a feisty Fairuiza Balk (Island of Dr. Moreau) gets power hungry and takes her vengeance to another level. Rachael True (Half Baked) and the always awesome Neve Campbell star as the other two members battling their own problems and insecurities. What makes the film work so well is the sisterhood and sometimes twisted friendship of these girls. They feel genuine and their stories are relatable as they deal with every day problems ranging from rumors to racism, abuse and body issues. The witchcraft is an added bonus and unlike most films of it's kind it delivers on that aspect including a slightly short but effective finale. Christine Taylor (Brady Bunch), Skeet Ulrich (Scream) and Breckin Meyer (Clueless) also star. The film is confidently directed by Andrew Fleming of one of my favorite 80s flicks Bad Dreams with a screenplay by Peter Filardi of Flatliners. It also features an amazing soundtrack with songs by Our Lady Peace, Letters to Cleo, Love spit love and more. I'm sure who's ever reading this has a love for this film as I do, so maybe it's time for a revisit. Budget: $15M Box Office: $55.6M 9/10

Originally intended for a 3D release new line couldn't get theaters to upgrade to the new format in time. This one starts with a horrible but slightly disappointing rollercoaster accident sequence. It feels like a straight up comedy to me but the death setpieces are both hilarious and shocking. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live free or Die Hard) stars as the girl trying to save everyone and cutie Ryan Merriman (Ring 2) stars as another potential victim going along for the ride. The movie is fun but it sadly skips the progress made with the second film feeling like more of a reboot. Regardless it's still entertaining even though it doesn't reach the height of the previous film. Budget: $25M Box Office: $118.9M 7/10

When I first saw this film I had no idea what i was in for, i dont think i completely understood it. Watching it all these years later it just completely blows me away. Directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) and based on the bestseller. The Hours tells the epic tale of three women living in separate decades but connected. Nicole Kidman stars as Virginia Wolf the amazing writer who suffered from a deep depression that rules her days and nights. Julianne Moore is a housewife in the 50s obligated to her husband and hiding her true self and sexuality. Meryl Streep stars as a woman in a lesbian relationship organizing a party for her dying friend. The movie links their stories as they go through each day trying desperately to survive for the people they love. It's an amazing, epic, powerful film that explores a story we've never seen. Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Ed Harris deliver award worthy performances. But the film belongs to a mesmerizing Nicole Kidman who deservedly won the Academy Award. Allison Janney, Claire Danes, Stephen Dillane, Miranda Richardson, John C. Reilly, Toni Colette and Jeff Daniels also make for a solid supporting cast. Budget: $25M Box Office: $108.8M 9/10

The director of Jawbreaker brings us GBF a.k.a. Gay Best Friend a coming of age, teen rom com. The movie centers around a young man whose outed by being **** into using a gay dating app in school. Three social queens seek him out and give him a makeover so that he can be their gbf. Mainly because it's trending. It's a fairly basic teen flick with an overdue twist. The movie is cute and funny and manages to explore some fairly relevant subject matter about being gay in high school. But unlike Jawbreaker it's very ABC family, there's not a dark bone in it's glittery body. That being said the movie is fun, colorful and entertaining even though it's all a bit predictable. 7.25/10

This remake gets alot of undeserved hate. It's of course nowhere as good as the superior original. But I don't think anyone ever thought it would be. **** director Kimberly Pierce's (Boy's Don't Cry) interpretation and adaptation of the material is not completely unnecessary. The setup is the same as Carrie is bullied by some girls at school and than begins to discover she has telekinetic powers. She of course makes it to the prom where a prank is pulled and everyone suffers a horrible fate because of it. In this version Jullianne Moore has the strongest impact as her overly religious mother and we get an idea of why. It seems she may be a lesbian and punishes herself everytime she is attracted to a woman. It also is implied that she was **** and Carrie was a result of that. It definitely adds a dimension to that story that wasn't there before. Pierce also interprets the main character differently. This Carrie has more control over her powers and the film is almost a setup for a superhero/villain origin story. Regardless although somewhat impressive it lacks the power and precision of the original film. Chloe Moretz Grace is also decent as Carrie but lacks the genuine touch and power of Sissy Spacek's performance. As for the others only Judy Greer as the gym teacher and the adorable and charming Anson Mount as her date make an impression. All in all it's a pretty good movie that leads up to a somewhat ridiculous but sort of bad ass finale. I wish Pierce would have kept it more subtle. In that I think the ultimate message of the movie about bullying, religious extremism, self worth and discovery would have been delivered more clearly. Budget: $30M Box Office: $85M 7.25/10

My obsession with Bridget Fonda (Point of no Return) began with this twisted, erotic thriller that I went to the theater to see when I was 12. As a young impressionable gay boy I found her performance riveting she was stylish, gorgeous and just everything I wanted to be at the time. Well let's get to the movie, Fonda stars as Ally a young woman who discovers her fiancee is cheating on her and throws him out. She than advertises for a new room mate and after some duds meets Hedra Carlson played by a perfectly psychotic Jennifer Jason Leigh. Heddy becomes obsessed with Ally and starts to impersonate her from her hairstyle to having relations with her fiancee. It soon escalates into terror as Ally finds out that Heddy is capable of much more than she thinks. It all leads up to an edge of your seat finale that makes this one of the premiere 90s thrillers like hand that rocks the cradle, basic instinct and sliver. The performances are solid all around and the direction from Barbet Schroeder is stylish and edge of your seat. Making this an intense, unforgettable thrill ride. Budget: $16M Box Office: $84M 8.75/10

I saw this movie when I was 16 at a friday night showing with my friends. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia or if its actually awesome but the movie is so fun and holds up very well. It centers on a young woman named Nicole (Witherspoon) who discovers first love with the rebellious David (Wahlberg). At first he's charming, romantic and caring but than his mean streak comes out and he becomes obsessive. Obsessive to the point that he would do anything to be with her. It's an intense thriller and a touch lifetimey but the movie does touch on adolescence, growing up and first love. It all leads up to an edge of your seat finale. Wahlberg is sexy, psychotic and solid in the flick and really does show alot of promise, Witherspoon is pretty good but has some questionable moments. Alyssa Milano also makes quite an impression as her best friend Margot. Look the movie may be a bit predictable but there's a reason why they keep making movies like this. Because when they are done right they can be electrifying entertainment and this is done right. Budget: $6.5M Box Office: $20.8M 9/10

This movie should be a national treasure. It's the most ridiculous, trashy, suspenseful, sexy, horrific modern grindhouse film that's been made in possibly the last 30 years aside from grindhouse of course. It centers around a young, psychotic woman whose punishing bad men through her skills as a nurse. She sets her sight on a new nurse at the hospital where she works and becomes a bit obsessed. It all leads up to a magnificent splatterfest at their job. The movie is smart in the sense of knowing what it is and completely delivering. Paz Vega is just perfect in the lead she's so weird and it just works. Kathleen Turner, Niecy Nash, Corbin Bleu, Katrina Bowden, Judd Nelson and Boris Kodjoe also star. Sadly the movie never got the theatrical release it deserved. It's still criminally underseen and deserves a cult following so if you haven't seen it and high gloss, gory, elevated camp appeals to you, rectify that asap. 7.5/10

Critic Roger Ebert wrote this campy, melodramatic, horror thriller musical. If that sounds like a lot you have no idea what this movie is like. This in name only sequel centers around a girl rock group who goes to Hollywood and is thrust into the seedy underbelly of sex, drugs, rock n roll, porn stars, **** killers, lesbians, etc. It's like a thousand lifetime movies blended together but with a rockin soundtrack. Mostly the movie works as an ultimate guilty pleasure but it does seem to just transcend film altogether. With beautiful cinematography and quick cut editing it's a wild ride that holds up pretty well. Originally Rated X and now NC-17 if this sounds like your jam go for it otherwise keep on steppin. Budget: $1M Box Office: $40M 7.5/10

This really surprised me. Initially when I first saw it I thought there was no way they'd be able to do a sequel. This one in my opinion is the best of the bunch. It all starts off with the most insane scene ever. A giant accident on the highway that's let's the audience know all the different ways you can die. Like the first someone has a vision but this time around it's a young woman who ends up stopping traffic and saves a group of strangers who of course begin to die in the spectacularly gruesome ways. The death setpieces are ridiculously impressive a combination of practical and digital effects. My favorite has to be the glass kill but all of them are remarkable and hella shocking. The movie unlike the original doesn't take itself seriously and neither should you but it also impressively lays out a complex twist that brings it all together. A superior film to the first with solid performances all around. Budget: $26M Box Office: $90.4M 8.5/10

Before Hunger Games and the Hunt and during the same year as hard target this action thriller about a group of privileged **** lure a homeless black vet out to the middle of nowhere with promise of work and than hunt him. It's really fun and energetic and although it may be a sliver under hard target its damn entertaining. Like that film there are lots of so bad it's good moments. Directed by Ernest **** of Demon Knight the movie is stylish and intense with a surprising emotional punch. Budget: $7.4M Box Office: $7.7M 7.5/10

This is the first Barrymore/Sandler collaboration and it would prove to be a successful formula. Set in the awesome 80s it centers around Robbie Hart played by an awesome Adam Sandler, he's an awesome wedding singer and an all around nice guy. He's engaged to be married and ends up left at the altar. He ends up beginning a friendship with a waitress named Julia played by a lovable Drew Barrymore whose engaged to a ****. They of course end up falling for eachother and hilarious problems ensue. The film is truly a perfect romantic comedy. No matter how many times I watch it, I still get so into it. Hilarious, heartfelt and classic. Budget: $18M Box Office: $123.3M 9/10

Sadly this awesome little serial killer flick never got the release or the attention it deserved. Starring a sexy David Duchovny of X Files, Michelle Forbes, a hunky and psychotic Brad Pitt and a reliably great Juliette Lewis. It centers on a young couple writing a book about serial killers who decides to travel the country visiting famous murder sites and ends up travel sharing with an actual serial killer and his innocent girlfriend. The movie is stylishly made with gorgeous cinematography and a dread induced atmosphere. It all leads up to an unforgettable conclusion that's both intriguing and disturbing. It's a classic that's criminally underseen. Budget: $8.5M Box Office: $2.4M 8.75/10
