One of Kevin Smith's best! Michael Parks was brilliant! I was really into it until the very end. That ending......I walked out kind of in disappointment, but then as my buddy and I started to digest it, it started growing on me. When you think of the ending in these terms: Kevin Smith was likely just sitting around planning this movie and I can envision him saying..."How do we end this? You know what would be funny...?" It is beautifully filmed as well. I'm stuck between a 7 and 8 out of 10...probably a 7, but the guilty pleasure side of me wants to scream EIGHT!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug9
Dec 16, 2013
The stretching of the story is a bit more evident in this film as compared to the first, but it really isn't detrimental to the overall success of the film. This is pure cinema greatness.....engaging and beautifully filmed. Performances are all top-notch. I don't feel that the addition of Tauriel (the new elf) was necessary, but it worked. And yes, Smaug is easily the best looking (and sounding) dragon you'll ever see!

Star Trek Into Darkness9
May 20, 2013
A Classic Villain! That's what Benedict Cumberbatch plays, and his performance is iconic. As usual, the performances here are all top-notch. There is some rather clever twists that will either enrage Trek fans or unite them. I'm in the latter group, feeling that everything really worked for me. The film is a little one-paced with frantic energy, but it never looses it's focus and the result is ultimately superb. The best film of 2013 so far.

Iron Man 37
May 6, 2013
This is all FUN! Go in with that mindset. The action is there, the effects are top-rate, and the storyline is interesting albeit a little muddy in spots. Downey Jr. is superb as ever.....this is his finest performance of the series. Still though, there really aren't many surprises here. The action is of course amazing, but still I felt a little robbed with the unanswered questions I had about a few plot holes. However, this is still a fun film and a good one to. You'd have to be a stiff not to enjoy it!

Evil Dead9
Apr 17, 2013
It's one hell ****, plain and simple. We all know what is going to happen before the film **** know it, I know it. The result is nothing short of spectacular because it is so gloriously done. It takes all the best parts of the Evil Dead films and makes one master entry of all. There is no camp, no **** just takes itself seriously and that above all else is what makes it work.

Argo8
Apr 1, 2013
This year's top films: Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Argo. Without comparison, Argo is a fine film. Tension is high, story is strong, and acting all around is good. With comparison however, I'm afraid it just doesn't measure up with Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty. I'm afraid Argo got the "pity vote" this **** I suppose it still pays the bills, right Ben? A win is a win.

The Host7
Apr 1, 2013
I liked this film. The presence of Ronan, Hurt, Kruger, and a few others really made up for some of film's weak spots. The story is somewhat generic, but it still works. They add an interesting twist to the "love triangle" formula which is what I believe proves to be one of the stronger aspects here. It's beautifully filmed and that along with several other strong points truly makes up for the film's transgressions. At least we are dealing with a genre that's a bit more forgiving as opposed to glittery vampires.

Zero Dark Thirty9
Jan 21, 2013
Pretty damn good! Chastain did a very fine job with a strong supporting cast. We may not learn much more about Bin Laden and further details on Al-Qaeda, but we are served with satisfaction in the exhilarating final 30 minute raid. I knock this one down from perfect status only for it's **** places it slugs along only to be jazzed up with an explosion here and there. All in all, it's a fine film that will stick with you.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey9
Dec 16, 2012
It's damn good. Let's be honest and give it the respect it deserves without unfairly judging it against it's award-winning predecessors. It's biggest culprit is the length. It's like so many other films these ****'s just a hair too long. Regardless, I found The Hobbit superbly entertaining, beautifully filmed, and thrillingly action-packed. As an avid Tolkien reader, this is a very fine representation of the book thus far. I can't wait to see what is yet to come.

Lincoln10
Dec 3, 2012
It's hard not to give this film the highest marks. Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing and so perfect. That's no surprise. What surprised me was the fact that so many other great performers were not overshadowed. Tommy Lee Jones nearly steals the show as Thaddeus Stevens, and Sally Field commands her role as Mary Todd Lincoln. Every character gets plenty of screen-time, all the while we are served up a buffet of the greatest portrayal of a US President in the history of cinema.

The Dark Knight Rises8
Jul 24, 2012
This film is superb, all by itself. However, it pales in comparison to The Dark Knight. Nearly all performances are what they should be, but Tom Hardy unfortunately fails to satisfy the high expectations of Bane, all with that uncharacteristic over-the-top accent. Bane is indeed devastating, and never before have we seen a superhero beaten to a pulp, slammed to the ground, and kept there for such a long time. Bale continues to shine as Batman, and Michael Cain's Alfred is so heartbreakingly perfect. Yes, the film itself is awesome, but how can you not compare this one to the haunting echoes of it's predecessor? The Dark Knight was about an idea. The Dark Knight Rises is more about devastation, and that is accomplished here.

Brave7
Jun 27, 2012
Brave is a fine film. It strikes a strong touching note in the end as many Pixar films do. Is the story original? **** yes. It has strong echoes of Brother Bear, which is the finer film, but the bond between mother and daughter is explored here and in much more depth. Merida is a good Disney princess.....a no-nonsense strong girl that refuses to take the path that so many expect her to take. In many ways, she is one of the strongest and most realistic Disney princesses we've seen in a long time.

Prometheus10
Jun 8, 2012
**** finally have a return to the glory of Sci-Fi! It poses many **** answers some but leaves many unanswered. It opens the window to the unknown and challenges it's audience to think. That's what makes it great. The performances are all strong, the effects are top-rate, the creatures were unique and horrifying, and the duration was just right. Ridley Scott's Prometheus is another ground breaker and will be remembered for a long time.

The Avengers9
May 5, 2012
ASSEMBLE all your friends and family to go see The Avengers! It doesn't get much better than this! An ensemble movie done extremely well and there is just so much going on here. Iron Man is flawless as usual, Ruffalo is pitch-perfect as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and the whole ensemble just works. The plot is solid with an imminent threat that is worth caring about, and Loki is a fine villain. Again, there is a LOT going on here, but Whedon seems to pull it all together while still giving each character plenty of screen time. This is a "smash"-ing good time!
Apr 13, 2012
Vanilla Sky9
Apr 13, 2012
You either understand this film or you **** that alone would base the difference between a positive or negative review. This film is indeed a glorious mess........that's what it intends to be and yet, in the final few moments of the film, it bunches up into something that somehow works. In the end, the story hits you in the gut and calls into question every character that you've grown accustomed to throughout the duration, and it asks you to let it all go. So devastating but so courageous and raw. Performances all around are top-notch, including Diaz, who does some of her best work here.

The Hunger Games8
Mar 30, 2012
I did NOT read the books. With that being said, I liked this film! The performances are all great and the story, as you can imagine, is strong. It drags here and there but nothing that **** the life out of what's going on on-screen. Harrelson does a fine job and he provides a likeable character here. Of course, the gorgeous pitch-perfect Lawrence is stunning as ever. There is some strong potential here and I believe with time and a couple sequels that are equally as good, this will be another franchise powerhouse.
Mar 20, 2012
Morning Glory9
Mar 20, 2012
Harrison Ford is in truly fine form here, along with everyone else. This film is so perfectly **** players really make the film hard not to like. I found myself at times laughing so hard that tears came to my eyes, and yet there was enormous heart and deeply buried human emotion that fleshes out in this film. McAdams and Ford really hit a strong connection here in sort of a father/daughter sort of way. Keaton is priceless as the happy-go-lucky co-host who just so happens to be "game" for anything! What a great film!

Take Shelter8
Feb 17, 2012
Shannon & Chastain are remarkable in this film. It is in these performances that keep the film grounded and engaging. Shannon portrays a man that is truly terrified, down the the very fiber of his **** even when everyone else in the film doubts him, he still draws belief from the audience. I found myself wondering the whole film, "What if he is right?" Throughout the entire film, that question contains far too grave of repercussions to merit dismissal, which makes this film engaging to the very last moments.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island5
Feb 13, 2012
Of course The Rock isn't going to shine much in this film, although, this is one of his better performances. This film is harmless fun and the effects are pretty good. It spends little time on story and slingshots the audience onto the Mysterious Island. They want us to spend most of our time there, and I can't say that I blame them. As always, Michael Caine is a delight and Hudgens gives the male audience something to look at. Beyond that, I can't say much more other than the aforementioned: it's harmless fun and the effects are pretty good. Kids will eat this up like ice cream!
Feb 13, 2012
The Grey9
Feb 13, 2012
One of the best films of the year! Liam Nesson, in one of his best roles to date, plays a rough, hard-nosed, scrappy, tough, kick-ass and yet subdued role in this film. He is quiet and focused exactly when he needs to be. All the performances are good and the cinematography is awe-inspiring. There is not a dull moment in this film. It exhibits truth and the harsh reality of these men coming to terms with their lives in one of the most harsh climates man has ever seen. The wolves are truly terrifying, and they are certainly an integral part of this story.

Jan 30, 2012
Fantastic film! Every performance hits the bullseye! This film deals with such a sensitive topic in a truly amazing way: truth and humor. JGL is so truthful in his performance and we watch his character take the news, inform his family, and deal with the fear, anger, and denial associated with those events. Rogen, as one can imagine, provides non-stop humor and yet, there is an enormous truth with his character as **** deals with the stress and grief just like a confused friend probably would. Such a great film!

Underworld: Awakening5
Jan 26, 2012
As a fan of the series, I remain mixed on this film. Indeed, the action was great, and the effects were good, but there was very little substance present in this addition. I love action, gore, and fast pacing, but this film lacked everything that made Underworld mysterious, subtle, and provoking. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, without Bill Nighy's Victor, the series will continue to slag. Nighy had a presence that improved each film with a sense of mystique. This addition indeed welcomes back Beckinsale, but this whole "hybrid daughter" thing is a tired concept. Can't it get a tad more interesting than that? Part of what made the first film so great was it's devotion to old-style vamps and wolves, with a couple contemporary twists to make them fresh. This film is pumped so full with steroids and action that it becomes **** a fan of action, gore, etc, that's a pretty big statement for me.
Jan 23, 2012
The Ides of March8
Jan 23, 2012
The performances are all good as one can imagine with a cast such as this....probably four of this era's best actors. This film hits in the spots that most political dramas neglect to focus upon. To be honest, I felt this film was a shade too short......what it does, it does well. However, with the acting chops present on screen, and a super-fiery plot that never really materializes into something "super-fiery", we are left with wanting more. I suppose that's where Clooney wants us to remain, but that doesn't make it a spectacular film.
Jan 23, 2012
Abduction5
Jan 23, 2012
Not as bad as I expected. Lautner isn't as bad in this as his past **** he isn't that good either. The presence of Weaver, Isaacs, and Molina affords this film the performance levity that it so desperately requires to be even halfway interesting. However, even those players can't make this better. It's not horrible, but we soon learn that the central topic of this film really doesn't apply at all.....just another "on the run from the bad guys" plot with actors that are nice to look at.
Jan 23, 2012
The Tree of Life7
Jan 23, 2012
I suspect this film will forever be underrated and misunderstood. That would be unfortunate due to Pitt's excellent performance as a naturalistic, authoritarian yet loving father trying to raise his boys with his graceful wife. Many scenes are visually stunning, but the pacing of this film is hard to latch on to. If the film were 30 mins less in duration, the pace would seem more bearable. Though symbolistic overtones and undertones dominate the goal of this film, it is almost as if it can't make up it's mind......documentary or movie? Both portions are equally enthralling, but the juxtaposition of both is hard to digest.....which is why this film won't hit home for the masses as fast as other films do.

Contraband6
Jan 22, 2012
Good film, but nothing really new. Wahlberg does a fine job, as well as Foster and Ribisi. The film does have intrigue and it does well in keeping your interest spiked. Throughout the duration, we see these characters getting buried deeper and deeper and deeper in one enormous debacle, and often times you wonder how in the world they will ever get out it. It is slightly exhaustive but it all makes for a pretty fun ride.
Jan 16, 2012
Larry Crowne7
Jan 16, 2012
A pleasure to watch! This film worked for me. It was light, charismatic, and fun. Watching Hanks in this role was entertaining and as you can imagine, nearly all the performances were good and sometimes even great. The film takes itself serious enough without surrendering the laughs and good times. Is it all that original? Not really, but that doesn't matter. What matters most is that this is a fun ride during each character's life changing events.

Moneyball8
Jan 11, 2012
A good **** a great film. Yes, it proves to be entertaining and interesting for those who are not huge fans of baseball and all it's tenured history. Pitt does another great job and Hill is really good as well. This is not a boring film by any stretch, and quite frankly I thought it would be. Its not and the dialogue is crisp and full of life and truth. It really does make you care for the on-screen struggles of these characters and it is enjoyable to watch, save for the downer **** hey! They can't argue with what actually happened, right?

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark7
Jan 5, 2012
An effective, spooky horror film that does some pretty great things. The performances are all good, and the creatures are reasonably terrifying, without being too grotesque. Though this film is predictable at times, it succeeds in inducing a couple shivers down the spine. It hearkens back to two classic 80s horror films: "The Gate" and "Cat's Eye", and those horrified me as a child. I suspect this film will do the same for the current generation's younger viewers.
Jan 4, 2012
Dolphin Tale6
Jan 4, 2012
An amazing story.....quite simply put. This film is sweet. The performances are decent and the subject matter is affecting. However, this film drags quite a bit and it really goes nowhere in the second act. If not for the touching conclusion, and the Westlife single "Safe" montage, this film would not have been perceived as well. Worth a rental price, and worth no more than a $10 personal copy.
Jan 4, 2012
Mr. Popper's Penguins6
Jan 4, 2012
An unbelievable, innocent film that is just plain fun to watch. Carrey is excellent as usual. The question here is not the performances.....they are all good, and how awesome was it to see Angela Lansbury back on screen? My main issue was that this film was so completely unbelievable, or rather, the things that happened in the film have nearly no chance of happening. One could forgive this if the film dealt with say magic, fantasy or even if the film was animated. Such an unbelievable plot would be forgiven easily if it fell into one of the aforementioned categories, but it doesn't. It plays itself off to be true......that it could and would actually happen. Come on! Turning a New York apartment into an icey penguin sanitary populated with 6 loud penguins that are disturbing the neighbors? A penguin flying with a kite on its back? I could go on, but I won't. Regardless, this is an innocent ridiculous film that can be a blast for a family to watch!
Jan 4, 2012
Take Me Home Tonight6
Jan 4, 2012
Another fun comedy with a pretty strong cast. Grace does a good job as the non-committal genius and once again, Fogler steals the show. This film hearkens back to the old day 80s and it features some of that particular era's most remembered music. All in all, this was a good film worthy of a rental price.
Jan 4, 2012
Hall Pass6
Jan 4, 2012
Fun and funny. This film is another comedy that is worth a rental price, and maybe even a $4 DVD......I got it for that price! Sudeikis and Wilson prove to be a pretty strong team here, and it all works. While this film is ridiculous in nature, it makes for a quite hilarious time.
Dec 21, 2011
The Fighter8
Dec 21, 2011
Bale steals the show here, plain and simple. He truly has transformed into this role and it is just amazing to watch him in the perfection of his craft. All other players give outstanding performances but Bale drives the film and makes it interesting. This film had a tendency to drag, but the family drama is magnified to such an extent that it's hard not to feel for them. Leo gives an especially strong performance here as well and portrays yet another completely transformed character. However, this film just doesn't have that strong underdog punch that so many of us wanted to see.
Dec 21, 2011
Warrior9
Dec 21, 2011
I felt this film gave a particularly special spotlight on the familial drama that drives the passions of the characters here. Everything just seems so deeply personal and you want to root for everyone. Nick Nolte gives possibly the best performance of his career and Tom Hardy is incredibly true with his portrayal of a punk MMA fighter/AWOL Iraq veteran. Edgerton plays the underdog we all love to love and he does a fine job as well. What a great addition to the underdog canon!
Dec 20, 2011
30 Minutes or Less6
Dec 20, 2011
Ridiculous and outrageous! This is a fun film and pretty much every character is priceless here, especially McBride. Though it is not very inventive, with the exception of McBride's hilarious mind, this film is still enjoyable to watch. I'm glad I did not spend the price of a theatre ticket however.
Dec 17, 2011
The Help8
Dec 17, 2011
A powerful film......difficult to watch at times, but it all rings true and painful. The performances are all top-notch with Davis offering the most truthful one. This film is really nothing new, but it still makes for a good story and sends a good-hearted message. It was easily worth the price of a rental!
Dec 12, 2011
Crazy Heart6
Dec 12, 2011
Of course, Bridges steals the show. He IS the show. That's the whole point of this film.....following this country legend all around the west and feeling the envy he feels while witnessing the perfection he once had. We then witness his gains only to feel them ripped from his life after the mistakes me makes. The film never quite spikes with enough energy aside from Bridges singing the same song over and over throughout the duration. The performances are all there, but the energetic undertones are stagnant which can make this film drag depending on what mood the audience is in. Bridges makes this film interesting, and that's that.
Dec 12, 2011
Horrible Bosses6
Dec 12, 2011
This movie is so ridiculous! That's it's strong suit! That's what makes it funny and interesting! The audience gives it the benefit of the doubt and rolls with the characters. Bateman is quite subdued here as opposed to his other films. His supporting costars really shine, Sudeikis and Day, with Day really stealing the show. The bosses.....each one is spectacular! Spacey, Aniston, and Farrell truly grow into people you love to hate and it translates well with the audience.
Dec 12, 2011
The Change-Up7
Dec 12, 2011
Come on! It was funny and that's that. It's not an Oscar winner of course, though Bateman's performance is hysterical and convincing! This film surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, but this one turned out to be quite funny and with a little dab of heart in there. Am I glad I didn't see it in the theatres and instead resorted to a $1 rental? Absolutely, only so as to save myself $8.50.
Dec 7, 2011
Crazy, Stupid, Love7
Dec 7, 2011
What a cast! Each one delivers a strong performance. This is a fine film that I enjoyed watching. It deals with difficult subject matter......divorce, life after divorce, the jealousy that is associated with this, and yes, crazy, stupid, love! This film takes the things we all want to do in these situations and it does it. Just when I think we've seen all Carell is going to be, he shells out another strong performance, and Gosling is right there with him.
Dec 1, 2011
Inglourious Basterds9
Dec 1, 2011
Another superb Tarantino film! The performances are all top-notch and yes, Waltz is as pitch-perfect as ever in his role. The dialogue in this film is so interesting and I found myself listening intently to what every character had to say, which is present in every Tarantino film. The cinematography is spectacular. At several points this movie gets crazy and then it scales back into it's lighter finesse, but all the while it remains engrossing. I did feel it got a tad bogged down here and there, but overall this is a very very fine picture!

Conan the Barbarian3
Nov 29, 2011
Just like any remake, you can't help but compare each one with its predecessor. So is the case here. While good old Arnold S. has never had superb acting chops, he still has a commanding presence both physically and performance wise. Neither is the case for Momoa, who just happens to be another boring star that is easy on the eyes. All of his costars are just as forgettable, except for Ron Perlman, who does a fine job as Conan's father. Lang does a decent job as Zym, but even his performance seems lackluster. This one just didn't have the right shoe-fit and I wasn't driven to that wonderful tale of lore, vengeance, and bloody satisfaction that was so prevalent in the original film.
Nov 21, 2011
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse8
Nov 21, 2011
Now here is an interesting and exciting Twilight film! The franchise jumped leaps and bounds with this film! It has a nice chunk of character development, a looming sense of impending doom, and awesome action sequences. This film feels more "real" and the audience begins to see the truth behind its characters. Lautner's performance here is really bad however, and the Dallas Howard replacement for Victoria was a mistake.
Nov 21, 2011
The Twilight Saga: New Moon5
Nov 21, 2011
With the exception of really cool special effects and a flicker of action sequences, this film is pretty weak. This film is 90% an advertisement for Lautner's abs, and the rest of the film is jam-packed into the remaining 10%. The audience is given ZERO character development and there are so many characters that could be more interesting here. New Moon is completely unapologetic to those who did not read the books, and that makes it all the more difficult to watch. Still, this was a nice distraction for a couple hours.
Nov 21, 2011
Twilight6
Nov 21, 2011
This film does fine in setting the stage. All characters are introduced well, we are given a good taste of what the vampires are all about, and it all makes sense for those who have not read the books. Much of what you see on screen is beautifully filmed, and the soundtrack is not bad either. Is this story anything new? Not really, but it does bring about a revived interest in ****. Stewart does a fine job as Bella and Pattinson is a glittering **** I say "glittering"? WTF?
Nov 21, 2011
Winnie the Pooh9
Nov 21, 2011
This film is genius in nearly every aspect. This kind of animation is so beautiful and it brings me back to the old days when I would put my old Winnie the Pooh VHS tapes into the machine! Everything that made the Pooh films so special and unique is present here. However, they missed one key and hilarious character......Gopher! Regardless, I was thoroughly entertained with this film and it was such a pleasure to feel that cuddly warmth of my childhood drifting back into my life for an hour or so. Now I must go because "I am rumbly in my tumbly!"
Nov 21, 2011
Immortals5
Nov 21, 2011
Been there, done that. Cavill is boring, Pinto is nice to look at, and Rourke is the only half-way interesting character in the entire film. Visually the film is a success. There are some stunning shots and special effects here, but that's about it. The story has a lackluster, old-hat, hand-me-down feeling to it, and I couldn't help but compare this film to 300. Although 300 was more flashy and charismatic, I think Immortals could use a good dose of that mentality.
Nov 21, 2011
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 16
Nov 21, 2011
I did not read the books. I have serious reservations in regards to this entire series. However, I did enjoy this film. The second act was absent of any excitement and instead the audience is presented with a film showing the lead character wasting away before our eyes. Where is the excitement in that? Within the first 2 minutes of the film, Lautner has his shirt off.......***insert rolling eyes here***. Still, this is another Twilight film that magically comes together and makes sense for it's target audience. While I don't fit into this demographic, I still could find some enjoyment out of all the fuss.
Nov 2, 2011
Captain America: The First Avenger6
Nov 2, 2011
Somehow this film clicks, but I'm not sure how. The main character is strong and Evans does well in the role, perhaps his best performance ever. Weaving is spectacular as ever, along with Tucci and Jones. Yes, this film has an excellent cast. However, this film compared to it's story-arch predecessors is far less flashy and much more scrappy. That is what I suppose makes it click, but aren't superheroes supposed to both? Regardless, this is an easy addition to the Avengers project and it will be interesting to see how well Capt. America stands alongside his teammates.
