This was a rare miss from Tarantino. The movie was well produced and every scene was fully realised. What it had in detail it lacked in immersions despite both being so interwoven. I'm left scratching my head as to what went wrong for me and when I think about the story I struggle find one other than a look into a brief moment of a few people's lives. This wasn't really enough for me to care about the characters and really struggle to answer the question of what was the point of this film. One might say it is to shine a light to the masses about the time period in Hollywood but we know Tarantino isn't interested in replicating history. So what was the point? To tweak events so people can forget what really happened? Even that can't be true because in comparison to the body of work of this great film maker there isn't much to remember in this film. The acting was top class and again the details were really impressive and the devil is in the details. But I would have liked to see more of the devilish sense of fear when dealing with these events. Could this movie be edited in a way to improve the film, absolutely. There is a backbone **** film here but originality should always be commended but not always rewarded.

I saw this trailer months before its release and I was really put off it because it looked like a typical animated story with a unique style that tries to stand out over other films of the same genre released over the past three years since the last unique animation box office failure. However, I knew this was going to get some attention because of the animation which is reminiscent of Nightmare before Christmas, Fantastic Mr Fox, Wallace and Gromit and kubo. Little did I know how truly unique and abstractly beautiful this film was. For a film shot like this, it is remarkable the amount of movement in each scene. The unnatural angles, the sharp movements of the characters contrasted by gentle movements caused by soft winds, the comedic blocks of clouds and dust, all contribute to a fantastic charm which is not too distant from that often achieved in short films. There wasn't a wide variety of emotions experienced while watching this film, which is obviously the desired goal of a dystopian world. There is no real sense of dread and no real feeling of reluctant sadness of which clutters animated films, instead you watch every scene transfixed by the style, following the wandering characters and their minds. It really is a film to sit back and relax while watching. The smooth voices of the actors absorb you into the world and characters. There is no reliance on typical Hollywood tricks that is so formulaic at this point where music or poorly written dialogue is the only thing telling the audience what they should be thinking or feeling. Instead, in this film not all the dialogue is translated and whilst the soundtrack is beautiful it is not used to replace anything but it is used to compliment the story. Therefore, the audience feels engaged, they begin to think for themselves and makes you leave feeling you have experienced a truly authentic and unique film. My only real criticism is the childish minor plot detail of the whole cat versus dogs element that didn't feature heavily in the film, thankfully, but the fact it featured at all with little significance made that detail seem unnecessary and a bit predictable. Other than that this a really stylish mature film that can be both thoroughly enjoyed by both critic and audience, both old and young.

There were a lot of ideas that made it into this movie and very little of them contributed anything interesting to the overall project. The movie is set in future Los Angeles in the middle of a riot over clean water. This is shoved in our face numerous times throughout the movie. This isn't a bad idea except it is overdone with helicopters exploding and purge like street fights. It is a riot not world war Z. This can be overlooked as it is not the focus. My biggest complaint however is the lack of significance which is rife in this film. A large amount of characters are just so unnecessary. The injured cop, gets treated against the rules, nobody cares she broke the rules, gets treated and leaves. A character on life support dies due to a power outage, everybody seems to have gotten over this in the next 5 minutes. A pen is stolen and made out to be a big deal, but instead was just used as a distraction at the end. Other character details are dropped in that also similarly are insignificant, we find people are drug addicts, some characters love each other (who cares), a son who was thought to have overdosed but was in fact murdered by a patient just so he could be murdered by some other character with little consequence as it had little effect on the end result. Two characters were given what was supposed to be a big final stand, but we don't know what happens to them as instead someone thought it was better to focus on a character refusing to get into a car for a reason not well explored. I could go on, but the overall impression is just lack lustre. I don't care as much as the script writers didn't care. The directing choices were questionable at times. The short quick steps taken by the nurse was meant to make her seem more endearing and busy but just was unnatural. Having scenes just for the sole purpose of showing how badass they are supposed to be, just comes of as pathetic. It is frustrating to me as I do believe somewhere in this there is a good plot. John Wick managed to create a criminal underworld with inside membership privileges very successfully, but instead hotel artemis decided to clutter a good plot, disfiguring it with unnecessary details and poor choices.

This movie is visually on point and that's the biggest compliment I can award this film. Paul Rudd normally provides an assured performance but this proved to be an exception. I am so confused at what point this movie went so disastrously wrong. The biggest failure of this movie is not its concept and not (for the most part) the deliverance or performances, but rather the script. For every cheesy one liner was met with a sigh and eye roll. If your movie relies on poorly scripted, draining, and uninspiring one liners to make it engaging, you need to scrap that draft and start again. That is genuinely what I think should have happened, they should have started again, introduced more contemporary/original comedy, discovered a new plot, and re-casted for some characters. I will give credit where credit is due. It does take a unique kind of skill to make a large budget seem so cheap. The source material was unique I guess.

Films are art and this is an exemplary piece of it. I have highly anticipated this film for over a year now, and since I live in the UK I had to wait an extraordinary amount of time to see this film (meanwhile the Blu-ray has already been released in the US). All of the patience and anticipation paid off in full. At the very core of this film you have talent, this results in 2 hours of spectacular scenes and a gripping story. This movie will transplant you into the minds of all characters without being too laboured or literal about it. The diversity of the characters makes you invest in each character equally despite their opposite desires and outlooks. The first half is effective in establishing the story as well as creating a rare charm. The second half unfolds with a dark turn which is extremely heavy and shocking contrasting with the previous charm and untouchable impression established in the first half. This makes the film so impactful in a beautifully tragic way that abstractly aches the soul. Each character has a past and a unique outlook on what an optimistic future looks like. This allows for many themes to be explored simultaneously, notably greed, ambition, livelihood, power, trauma and reluctant hope. The Sisters Brothers is beautifully shot and no shortcuts were taken. Some of the sets were the best I have ever seen from a western and with the close up facial shots with ambient lighting from authentic sources was really effective in creating a sense of presence in a scene, with constant noise and movement proving to be a refreshing take on the genre as compared to the stand off stillness of traditional western films. The story is great without being overambitious, but rather the ambition is left within the characters themselves. It is extremely easy and pleasant to watch. Finally, the acting in this film by all 4 titled cast members is absolutely outstanding. With the cast, especially Jake Gyllenhaal, the main reason for my high anticipation for this release, I had high expectations for the performances. At no time during this film did I see any actor. I only saw completely realised characters. It is when you force yourself to think about the amount of skill it takes to portray a character so believable, so cohesive and complementary to the script and other characters that you really are amazed by the acting. Films are art and this is an exemplary piece of it. This has automatically become one of my favourite pieces of film. I am filled with joy replaying some scenes in my mind and I can only imagine the joy I will experience when I go and see the film again. Thank you to every person involved in this wonderful project.

Would never watch this film again. I was dragged to see this as my friends were too afraid to watch "us" and similarly this film felt like a drag at points as well. The story was ok in an unoriginal way, we all knew what was going to happen immediately when the story line was set up. Actually, the whole movie was predictable. My main concern was the jokes, or rather lack thereof, it seriously doesn't qualify as a comedy but instead should be called light hearted. I also believe that overacting or being so exaggerated to the point of becoming a caricature is not enough to make a film funny. Taraji is ok, she has found a niche, and works tight within it, she is likeable but doesn't quite save the film. The film is littered with irrelevant characters and we don't really care what they do let alone what they think, especially when they are treated as a crude opportunity to say a joke that doesn't really land. This film is very shake and go; where its formulaic approach ruins the film.

So a movie about a cat. No. It seems that ethnicity and race has always been a source of income and inspiration for Jordan Peele and as much as Get Out was a bore Keanu, despite being on the polar opposite end of genres, doesn't provide an exception to this. Funny animals deserve to remain on poorly edited YouTube clips or washed up daytime home video TV shows, not made into a film. Similarly the jokes were out of place, in fact they were out of sight, this film failed to make me laugh a single time. Too often the genre of comedy is seen as a free pass to botch a script, story and frankly the film industry, Keanu being a fine example of all of these. I wish some respect was shown to the craft here but like the films point all was lacking. Poor Tiffany Haddish, a promising upcoming comedic actress, is being hindered by recent films such as this and night school. Granted Tiffany managed to create a likeable character you could cling on to in order to survive the 1.5 hours. As a person who likes to laugh with and not at, I have made an observation through watching many failed comedy films is that being loud, frantic and annoying doesn't translate to comedy. Isn't that right Kevin Hart.

This film sees a decent attempt by Netflix to make their originals more in line with Hollywood ideas. Big names feature in this film which both elevates and hinders the film. The plot is mildly interesting, the originality relies on the characters but then the film has to be successful in making the audience like these characters, which I do not think they have really achieved in full. Mainly by a significantly poor performance by one individual who thankfully doesn't pollute this movie in its entirety, one who ruined a highly respected and successful franchise who in this film tried to ruin a whole genre and whose career seems dedicated to the regression of acting. I will no longer give this actor another chance to waste my time. If you want to watch a film with a cast that is mostly skilled and also has a good script and budget then this isn't bad at all. Credit should be given to Netflix for this film given its inconsistency.

Marvel fans are very uptight and so territorial that Tolkien used them as inspiration for Gollum. When watching the film I could hear them coughing and talking to themselves, silently muttering "precious" under their breath. A very uncomfortable movie experience I'll have you know and yet I was able to watch Captain Marvel with a sense of relaxation and immersion. I had zero expectations going into the film. I am by no means a fan of Marvel films, if anything, I think they are money grabbing, mind polluting, art damaging pieces of film. Recently, however, I have seen a conscious effort to use the large budget to actually create something daring and unique, an effort which gave them an Oscar nod, and deservedly so. We are also seeing them cast really talented actors and actresses, such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Brie Larson, both of which have so unapologetically exhibited the art and skill that goes into the portrayal of every character of a well written script. So with the promise of positive change in recent past and near future, I took my seat with an open mind. The positives of this film include its special effects. The CGI is seamless, the special effects makeup is top level, and Samuel L Jackson has never looked better. The concept of the film was solid overall, however, I do think it was a bit too self centred towards the main character herself, which took away from the overall scale and impact of the on screen events. Some scenes are forgettable and even now, a couple of days after watching the film, I struggle to think of an overall plot outside of an individuals self discovery and revelation. That being said, the film incorporates tired, old, boring storylines and puts an enjoyable and original twist on them, for example, the whole idea of amnesia and flashbacks is as tired and old as Samuel L Jackson without anti-aging effects (in fairness that doesn't look that old), however, they successfully navigated this plot detail in a way so that it wasn't cumbersome. The film does have plot holes and questionable logic, however, the movie doesn't take itself seriously enough to warrant anybody to stay up at night questioning them, although I presume the marvel nerds will. If anything, ditching more of the source material and being more inspired by it, including that unnecessary Mohawk, would improve the film. The acting wasn't anything to take note off but I do think Brie Larson was able to have some fun with the role. Samuel L Jackson and Jude Law were similarly satisfactory. Overall, this movie was a successful high budget B movie, never intending (I hope) to cause ripples or revolutionise the industry. If you have an open mind you could be entertained by this film, however, if you are only satisfied by a movie that coincides with what you envisaged then I doubt you will enjoy any film.

Every so often a film arrives and it tries to reinvent the wheel. Many of these attempts fail, however, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse manages to achieve something highly unique in style. This uniqueness makes everything that plays out on screen seem highly original and entertaining. The plot was good, although some aspects of it could have been developed further. The charm of the typical spider man was achieved. With regards to the multiple spider men and women in parallel universes, it was interesting and provided an edge and some interesting concepts, however, I could have done with a gentler ease into anime and warner bros. The movie is clearly designed for kids and I couldn't help but unwind while watching this film and not think about it too much. This is an extremly long film with a muted story but my eyes did not wander off screen, I was never not entertained and I truly felt amazed seeing this incredible work on a big screen. I know this film got recognition by the academy but I think the best recognition this film has received is its influence on modern day culture, storytelling and pop culture. The popularity of cyber punk has been looming under the surface with fashion and manga's, however, Blade Runner 2049 propelled this genre into a highly realised and modern genre that would cement itself as one of the most successful genres of modern day films. I will never understand why anyone would want to free solo, and this movie does very little in explaining why either. I expected better editing and structure to the film and the film has a very peculiar build up to the final climb, I understand that the camera crew didn't know when he was going to do it but I also expect hindsight to play a part in the final product. Clearly the man in question has a lot of issues and so does the film. The film doesn't really do justice to the high stakes this man went through to reach the top because in the first minute of the film we see him reach the top! Whoever decided to do that is possibly the single worst person to have worked on this movie. Obviously I wanted him to reach the top but I also wanted to experience watching him doing it with the tension everyone else felt when they saw him do it in real life. Why ruin the film? why? Everything he did that was high risk now became underwhlming because you now he did it successfully already. If you make a documentary that records something so extraoordinary as what this man has done and you have to remind yourslef of how incredible it is, someone along the line of this production has slipped and plummeted to the death of their film making career.

I stumbled on this movie not long after its release. I didn't know anything about the movie or heard anything about it prior to watching it. I had a couple hours free and noticed that sandra bullock was featured in the decent trailer so I decided to give it a watch. This film is a good and hearty thriller, it does draw a lot of parallels with other films of the same genre but has enough character to make it original. The film manages to create an incredible sense of unease and unpredicatbility that is key to the success of a thriller, so much so that I felt exhausted when it was over. The acting was good with some characters and character plots similar to the walking dead (back when that show was good). The story jumps about a lot to different times and locations which is quite annoying at the start when you just want the film to progress. Quite surprising though was he themes explored in the film and was actually quite successful in conveying emotion. The story does follow a typical apocalypse narrative so you find yourself thinking to yourself "when are these people going to argue about having to go out and get supplies" and sure enough they do. Some charcters are just there to make you feel sorry for them and their innocence, which makes it obvious they are going to get killed off. Sarah Paulson featured quite briefly in the film but I thought she could have offered more to the film. John Malkovic was ok, I think he is well rehearsed on playing a short tempered, problematic character. Sandra Bullock's performance was ok, she delivered lines in her usual tone but has something about her that makes her acting quite enjoyable to watch. Overall, I think this movie will be enjoyable for those who enjoy thrillers and for those who just happen to stumble upon it themselves without being influenced by the recent viral spread of this movie with people running about with blinfolds on, I mean the promotion of this ovie was so awkward I half expected Joan Crawford to come running in swinning a fake axe.

A star is born seems to be a humble film about the rise of a star and the simultaneous fall of another. This humility I think has been lost in the recent award season but whether or not this film deserves oscars or not, proably the former in my opinion, the film still has positives and negatives. Lady Gaga is a tremendous talent and excels as her role which she clealry has some emotional connection to. She delivers dialogue and emotions earnestly and is able to convey emotions proportional to on screen events. Lady Gaga only offers to lift this movie up with her unavoidable star presence. Bradley Cooper is a very likeable actor, he has had an accomplished career as an actor so far and his performances aren't always versatile but are consistently good. Here Bradley portarys a complex character with previous and existing issues. His acting of his characters' addiciton was more believable and effective in some scenes more so than others. He was at times overshadowed by his famous co-star but I do believe Bradley Cooper held his own and played a role that no one could easily have taken. His job as a director was solid, the directing didn't hinder the movie but its hard to think of any times where it excelled, which isn't too bad a criticism for a directorial debut, but I have seen better debuts by actors (Paul Dano's Wildlife). The soudtrack was really good, again an area where Lady Gaga came through. Bradley Cooper has to be commended for his contributions to this soundtrack however it is obvious his acting is where his comforts lie. The storyline was ok but it was obvious how this movie was going to progress. This movie tries to tackle difficult themes and for the most part it managed to do so effectively. However, I do think that certain issues, especially the one related to the conclusion of this movie was a bit awkward. The movie seems to be clunky in the sense that half way into the movie they realise they need to start preparing for how its going to end. This results in a drastic change in mood that whilst creates a feeling of dread in the audiene it also feels like an uncomfortable attempt to depress them also. This may have been the goal of the film but then again you could have shown a short film of histroical tragedies which would require little effort on behalf of the film maker to elicit the same feeling. A more creative way to show the downfall of a perons life would have been more relatable and would have created a deeper feeling of sorrow in the audience rather than just a depressing afternoon.

Overlord does take two overdone genres of war and "zombies" and manages to harmonise the two to make a new and refreshing take on what a B movie can be. I do think it is a B movie because its not trying to create ripples in the industry but rather its purpose is just to offer a distraction and somewhat entertainment for 2 hours. The positives of this film include the setting as it replicates previously successful war time movies. The element of history with references to momentous battles in the war and also the **** experimentation and torture were obviously prominent and provide some weight to the on screen occurences. There is some suspense and scares that whilst aren't unpredicatble are well done. However, I did expect and want more suspense from this film. The idea of being in enemy territory with zombies that you don't know off could have added an eeriness and scenes to make you more uncomfortable. I appreciate that the filmmakers probably wanted to stay away from traditional zombie/horror movie cliches such as seeing something move in the background but I do have the opinion that those movie cliches are better at achieving suspense and unease than over-the-top gore which this movie unapologetically does. The gore was necessary, I guess, but it could have been more consistent. Some scenes, which were the ones that featured heavily in the advertisements, had a lot of effort put into them whilst others seemed lazy and rushed. The acting was satisfactory but could be better and not monotone and the movie does not have a lasting impression or impact after it ends but I don't feel time was wasted here.

Viola Davis was fine as the lead but offered nothing really interesting bar the occassional awkward outburst or tear that felt overstaged and took you right out of the film. Liam Neeson by his own doing has made himself irrelevant and the scenes he has with Viola Davis are just cringe worthy in light of his recent admissions. I only watched it because of the nominations it was getting, but this film just goes to show that the biggest criminal organisation today is the academy and other award shows who steal nomiations and wards from actors, actresses and film makers who actually dare create something unique and complex. I avoided this film for so long because I thought it was just going to be a replica of highly politicaly motivated movies we have been seeing since modern day cinema was created. Its cast for the most part was good, the cinematography at times was excellent, the dialogue was smooth and enjoyable. I do have some grievaces about the movie and that is why I gave a mixed score. Some of the actors fell short, mainly "Flip", some scenes were a bit too long, and at times; mainly in the first half I was extremly bored. Knowing that this is Oscar noinated for best picture, I am surprised because I do think that this was a slightly above average film, albeit with a satisfying ending, but then again are we to be that surprised that as politically concerned as the academy is to be awarding a political movie, probably not. I hope we begin awarding movies for its artistic value and creativity and make representation and equality a given standard that is appreciated but not projected as a rare advancement, which sometimes comes across as a public stunt to gain better opinion. This film does has creativity and some would call it artisic. I just think its interesting and deserves to be watched, just not awarded so highly.

Velvet Buzzsaw is a very self aware film that almost uses the context of the movie to pre-emptively discredit any bad critique regarding it. This then allows Dan Gilroy to go all out and go so extremly over the top that leaves you dazed. I have never before seen a movie where you question yourself whether you liked it or not and the answer you reach is neither. Dan Gilroy has successfully managed to achieve something quite extraordinary here in the audience response, in that we now understand truly what the point was behind the film. That point being that art is divisive, it shouldn't be put down to either good or bad, it should be witnessed by as many or as few people as possible, somewhat undoing the damage of commercialisation and scrutiny of art. Dare I say the movie, never sems to reach a climax because that has to come within the viewer. That being said, not everyone thinks about movies when the credits role and therefore, on a surface level te movie has flaws, it is quite shallow and lacks relatable emotions but then again isn't that not the impression we get from art elitists. The horror element isn't really there and I don't think extreme horror could work as it would be too disjointed from the cartoonish aspects. The movie is paced in a way that hardly gives you a break to refocus which can sometimes be tiring. The saving grace, ultimately, to this movie that makes the almost 2 hour running time enjoyable is the amazing cast. Rene Russo, Toni Collette and John Malkovic add an element of bitterness that helps to create the atmosphere of the exclusive art world. I do have slight problems, with Zoe and Natalia's performances in the sense that they came across outweighed and outperformed by their colleagues. Billy Magnussen, I felt could have been given more scenes to elaborate on his borderline obsessive connection with the Dease art. And finally Jake Gyllenhaal. Do I really need to say anything more. At this stage do we even need to question Jakes' performances. Again he proves that he is a rare talent who has a real passion for every aspect of the industry of film making and adds so much to every scene and every movie that is lucky to have him star in. Many people were on the the fence about this movie but Jake is the common factor that pushes it to an overall good rating. My only slight annoyance is with comentors who are now saying Jake is delivering consistenly over the top and whacky characters. To which I can tell them to go and watch wildlife so they can actual present informed opinions. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, Nightcrawler, Dan Gilroys' previously (highly) successful project with Jake. It was inevitable that comparisons were going to be made between the two films, but they were so different that I don't think it is appropraite to compare them. Would I have prefered a darker more realsitic thriller about the artworld? Yes. And yet I wouldn't change Velvet Buzzsaw because, why change a movie to be more like a previous movie just because it was successful. It is that kind of formulaic approach to movie making, that whilst does good in the award season, offers nothing to be commended. In conclusion, the orginality, acting and overall lasting affect of this movie should be commended. This film has tapped into multiple genres and new aspects of opinions that have been previously unexplored. That kind of bravery and orginiality deserves respect.

A very human story with unhumanly skilled actors. The book by Richard Ford was breathtaking and the way Paul Dano was able to take that book and put it on screen as honest and accurate as he did is even more breath taking. This movie isn't for the high energy, superheore obsessed as it takes a more heartfelt approach to adult emotion in the framework of a family and a traditonal society. It feels more like an insight into lives you want to study, emotions you want to elaborate on, connections you wish to establish.

The biggest flaw a movie can make is to make a film without character. I find film makers make this flaw more often if their biggest agenda is to make the most amount of money from it. This film has an abundance of character. From the very start you are there with the characters, and you are along the whole journey with them which only makes this film even more enthrawling. The skill it takes to make a movie and to act like what is demonstarted here is very rare and takes real talent that deserves to be recognised. To tell an up to date story with reality and emotion is rarely recognised as brilliance, but that is a mistake when talking about end of watch. Its hard to compliment a movie so extremly when its biggest strength is the humility of the characters and story, it really deserves to be as watched by as many people as possible.

If you boiled down this plot you would get a very unorginal story. However, when you add the characters and overall effect this movie manages to create you get a highly realised film that captures the realistic considerations a group of people would have to make if extra terestrial life was found. It is this realistic mindset approach combined with solid film making that allows the cast to really follow through on this film, to deliver an enjoyable insight into a highly talked about scenario. The contrast with alien life to the very human characters in this film provides weight and genuine interest from the audience into the outcome of the story. The focus is not about gore, its not about a futuristic planetary exploration turned wrong, it's not even about death, but instead it is about Life.

If people ever argue that films are not art, I will show them this film. The work that has gone into every scene in this movie is outstanding and efortlessly majestic and poignant. The very roots of this film in immersed in art. The acting is of the highest standard which is a given providing the cast members with particular focus on the immense abilities of Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is very impactful on the viewer and should be on the film industry as well as it shows how to tell a story in a gracious yet emotive, and human way.

I can not give a moviemaker enough credit for trusting an audience. This movie is guaranteed to entrap you in its web. The film is completely realised and with that regard it is flawless. Speaking of flawless, Jake Gyllenhaal cements himself as one of the actors who can't step a foot wrong; but instead of being an exhausting feat for him, which it would be for the majority of actors, he effortlessly does it due to his abundance in talent and artistic flare.

Upgrade is a refreshing movie with a clear story it wants to tell. The story wasn't to ambitious which resulted in a very streamlined, smooth story, which allowed for sufficient character development. It featured charm as well as competent acting. Not gut wrenching but leaves you satisified with the realistic portrayal of disastifaction of an age where emotions are replaced with technology. I was surprised to find it so original providing the amount of attempts at this genre including blade runner and elysium but its reserve pays off providing an impression of a world not so distant from now. Logan Marshall Green deserves more opportunities to fine tune his abilities, and I hope this allows him to be seen as a unique talent.

A film that could have stepped out on its own but just found itself reiled back into superheroe cliches of traditional character stories and cringe worthy one liners. The plot wasn't original, the pacing was offensive and the ending was a choice. Its not all lost I suppose, its big budget was evident even if it did take the form of cheap, unimpressive costumes, its CGI is no blade runner 2049 but it was enough to keep your eyes from wandering off screen which at times I wanted them to. Also aquamans mum must be great friends with the wasps mother in ant man because they have very similar life experiences being thought dead in a presumably unsurvivable location, not original, or interesting and thats me talking about the first time I saw this storyline.
