Bird Box

If you told me Bird Box was based on a Stephen King story — yep, I could see that. It’s that chilling. That suspenseful. And oh yes, that scary.

As Bird time-jumps between the claustrophobic action of the house and a desperate sort of jailbreak, director Susanne Bier (The Night Manager) keeps the mood taut and defiantly in the moment.

Most of its strength emerges from a well-directed ensemble, one able to convey the high concept of a nightmarish situation without losing their relatable humanity.

It’s entertaining enough to be worth watching for fans of the genre or of Bullock, who turns in a strong performance as a woman who has motherhood thrust onto her in a world loaded with peril.

Heisserer’s script endeavors to give Bullock a rich psychological backstory to play — something to do with her reluctance to accept motherhood and the redemption she experiences in accepting that role — and the wonderfully self-reliant actress plays that arc earnestly enough. But there’s no getting around that this is a monster movie without a monster.

There are certain pleasures here, mostly in the cast of characters. Malkovich’s misanthropic egoist is chief among them. And Bullock makes for a fierce and relatable Mama Bear. But as for tension, there’s precious little.

The effort behind Bird Box was to make something better than a standard horror movie, but the result is dull and half-hearted. It’s not serious enough or important enough to transcend the horror genre, but neither is it visceral enough to hold up as a regulation horror movie.

A cross between "The Quiet place" and "The happening". Bullock puts in a serviceable performance. The flashbacks are the best part, shame we never get any information about why everything is happening and what the entities actually are. Ending is a bit low key.

In a nutshell: It's a Quiet Place clone. An old saying when making horror movies and building great atmosphere is "less is more." A threat is more scary when you don't know what is and can't see it. Bird Box demonstrates this fantastically by showing nearly nothing. Sandra Bullock delivers a stunning performance, as do the rest of the top tier cast. On the other hand, the extras or smaller characters come across as amateurs and do really look sub par by comparison the the leads. The story is delivered in a back and forth way ie. Present, then flashbacks. While this style is a bit clichéd for this genre, it works. Pacing on the other hand is very slow and does drag on and on frequently throughout the movie. Overall: An okay movie that is really hampered by its very slow burn. If you don't mind a slow paced thriller/horror, then you'll likely love it. If you prefer more action, then you'll likely find it a bit boring.

Skip it. It's a cliche by-the-numbers apocalyptic movie. The ending is deeply unsatisfying. It doesn't give you anything profound to contemplate. It doesn't offer the slightest bit of explanation.
