I see why this film is always regarded as a masterpiece. Everything is pretty much perfect. The acting, the direction, the cinematography, the attention to details, etc. Literally the only problem is some of the audio (Idk if it was me but sometimes the audio was edited poorly at times) and Travis' sudden change of motivations into wanting so hard to save the girl was a little bit weird and unexpected, but who cares. Everything is so intense and it had me in the edge of my seat the entire time. The buildup to the expected payoff is so amazing and those last 30 minutes will be forever stuck in my head. I highly recommend it and I can't wait to watch it again.

Batman Begins6

I know, I know, I know why people like this, but this is kind of a mixed bag for me. Now, this is an example of how you take a comic book character and make it "gritty" and "realistic", but I hesitate to use the word "realistic", I think the better word is "less campy" or "less cheesy", because there are still some fantastic elements like the gas or just the idea of someone dressed up as a bat fighting crime. The character of Bruce Wayne is definitely the best part. This movie finally made Bruce Wayne into an actual, interesting character, and Christian Bale is still the best Batman. I didn't care for Rachel and the rest of the characters didn't have much to do in the story. The villain is pretty ridiculous and his plan is confusing. I like Scarecrow a lot, tho, and some of his scenes are just great. As a superhero movie, this didn't really work for me, as the action is so terribly edited that sometimes it becomes incomprehensible. I know superhero movies don't have to just be action, but it's one of the elements you expect from a movie like that and I didn't get that here. As a crime drama, it doesn't really work either(? If you don't know anything about Batman or if you're not a big fan of the character, all you have left is some average drama about letting go of your fears that really doesn't make much sense since the villains' plans are so ridiculous. Overall, it's decent, but The Dark Knight outshines it by far.

I cannot believe how much of a masterpiece this movie is. It looks gorgeous thanks to the impressive cinematography. It's perfectly acted, pretty much everyone gives the performances of their lives. The direction is outstanding. It never feels manipulative (because a subject matter like this is easy to fall into manipulative) and every character, every line of dialogue, every situation is believable. I hardly see a film that gives us an insight of such atrocity of which humanity will never recover and it's so emotionally powerful and the ending is legit one of the best I've ever seen. I shed tears of both joy and sadness. It's obviously no fun movie but its moments of levity and emotional weight and simply its unbelievable artistic merits make it a film that I would like to revisit again soon.

JUST HAVE MERCY! THIS FILM IS SO EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE! You know, just because it's based in real life events that are infurating and sad, that doesn't mean I should be crying in this film. Movies are other thing, you know. Unless it's a documentary, I should see characters and have the emotional moments be EARNED, but in this film there are characters that have absolutely no other purpose but to make the viewer feel sad for them. Not like them, not realte to them, just feel sad about them. And no, just because an actor cries doesn't mean it's a "powerful performance". You need to be the worst actor ever if you don't know how to cry in the appropriate moments. It's so cruel and manipulative and in terms of direction it isn't anything remarkable.Sure, because of the messages the film tried to have, it needed to be cruel, but at least have something else. I don't know, moments of levity or charm or getting to know the characters better, you know. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) is famous for being a raw, cruel, disturbing war film but it had its moments of levity and emotional character interactions, but no, in this film you shouldn't feel nothing other than misery and sadness.

Richard Jewell6
May 30, 2020
It's one of those forgettable Oscar bait films. The acting is good (Kathy Bates shines and Paul Walter Hauser was really good as Richard Jewell) but Sam Rockwell plays yet again the same character he played in Three Billboards and Vice: A quirky, sarcastic man who works in some kind of public charge and deep down has a heart of gold. He's honestly becoming another Jesse Eisenberg. Besides the acting everything else was unremarkable. The story is interesting but Clint Eastwood did the bare minimum in terms of direction or screenplay. Olivia Wilde's character was a stupid cartoon character (and it actually made controversy in real life) and the cinematography is just dull. There aren't really things that are terrible but it did nothing exceptional. Clint Eastwood should retire. Literally his last good film was American Sniper. After that he has just released Oscar bait trash like Sully or 15:17 to Paris.

So, not gonna lie, I liked this movie. I think the acting is great (I loved Mark Ruffalo in this, he's hilarious). I think it's well shot. The story is interesting and I don't feel there was something missing or something that could've been cut. The dialogue is compelling. When the movie is quiet it doesn't get boring, it's actually interesting and every character interaction is believable. However, something I didn't really like are the characters. This movie has too much characters and it's so hard to keep up with all of them and their names. I hardly remember the characters because they are not really characters but more like plot devices with the sole purpose of moving the story forward. I only remember Mike (Mark Ruffalo's character) because he was pretty charming and quirky and the times I laughed in this film were because of him. The rest of the characters literally act the exact same. I don't know, I would've liked to focus on one character and its journey. It's better to flesh out one character, than having a huge cast of underdeveloped characters. It's still a good film, but nothing great or exceptional. It didn't deserve Best Picture, tbh.

It looks like the animators and artists did a great job in making this movie look very visually appealing and different from many current mainstream animated films. So, if this movie did something right, it's the presentation and the animation. Other than that, this movie was pretty meh. The story had the potential to be great but it ended up being kinda fine, and sometimes it's just...Frustrating. The parents are literally the worst parents I've ever seen in a movie. They have absolutely no reedeming qualities and act as if they legit would kill their children. They do something in the movie that's so stupid and unrealistic that it's just baffling. I was constantly like "Why would they do that? That didn't make any sense". I guess it did a great job in wanting me to hate them but they are so ridiculously written that it gets annoying. The rest of the characters are okay. The twins had the potential to be a pair of Minions (annoying and obnoxious for the sake of cheap "humor") but they weren't annoying, thank God. If you don't overthink the story and the actions of the characters, then this movie is actually fine. It has some good comedy here and there. I loved the cat narrator, he has a lot of charisma, and while the ending was a bit predictable I was actually satisfied because I thought it was going to end in some other way (and if it did, I would've hated the movie). It's a decent way to kill an hour and a half. It's harmless family friendly entertaining.

Oh. My God. This is definitely not the movie the trailers tell you it is. It's a movie that seems like a generic karate comedy but my God this was a lot more than that. The first act was a bit slow and there wasn't too much comedy (In fact, I think it starts almost in the same depressing tone as the Joker movie) and the comedy it is isn't that funny but once Casey (Jesse Eisenberg) starts taking karate lessons the movie starts to be a BLAST. The comedy is top notch and it doesn't rely in the typical jokes you might expect from a karate movie (Like characters falling down or characters failing spectacularly at doing something, etc). The characters are so fun to watch. The protagonist and antagonist are fleshed out perfectly. The rest of the characters are more like background characters but they fit well in the story. There's a lack of music, which is fine, I guess but it didn't fit the tone. I mean, this movie needed more music because for me, a movie without music is a lot more grounded in reality but this movie isn't really grounded. So it lacks score music and when there's score music is just extremely forgettable. I ADORED the twists and turns and how this movie turned out into something smart and pretty dense. Overall, it's not a perfect movie, but it's a movie I would definitely rewatch. I'll just probably skip the first half hour.

This creepy cult story has been done before but what makes this movie work isn't the story. If this was directed by some other director, it would've been bad. The cinematography is stunning. It's perfectly directed. The acting is fantastic. It says so much in a smart way. Really this movie is just great. This is horror done right and it doesn't even take place at night. So many sequences that are genuinely frightening.

Pretty much my favorite stop motion movie ever. The parallels to Orwell's Animal Farm and real life tragedies like the holocaust are apparent but the story still feels so original and creative. The characters are well developed and fun to watch. There isn't a single weak or unnecessary character. The villains are genuinely hilarious yet intimidating, well written and a true threat to our characters. The scenes Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy are togheter can be its own comedic short film because they are just hilarious. The sets look great. The stop motion animation is genuinely fantastic. The cinematography makes this movie look great and interesting and the score is just amazing.

This is one of the examples of a "forgettable, mediocre Disney flick". Yes, I know it's for kids and the story needs to be kept simple, but that doesn't mean that you have to do a pretty by-the-numbers, formulaic, cookie-cutter story. The characters are underdeveloped and not fleshed out at all. The comedy was pretty bad and all because of the stupid moose characters. They are so unnecessary and added just for "comedic" relief. I didn't laugh once the entire movie. Did I cry at least? No, because the emotional moments felt pretty cheesy and didn't feel natural at all. Was I amazed by the music? Not at all. The score itself it's fine, I guess. It's pretty forgettable and just "serviceable". The songs are also pretty forgettable and just obnoxious. There was a moment in the movie were the characters were talking about something important that had the potential to be a powerful and devastating scene but then SAD PHIL COLINS SONG started playing. I was just like "Turn it off I want to hear the damn conversation!!". It is so obvious that they included Phil Colins songs to earn another Oscar nomination for Best Original Song (Well that didn't happen, so it was pointless. It's no coincidence that Phil Colins, as of 2020, hasn't composed songs for a Disney movie again). So this movie didn't make me feel anything. I'm not talking too much about the animation because at least the movie looks good and many backgrounds look great and highly detailed, but that doesn't make it a great movie or anything. Like I said, the story was fine, I guess, but the ending was so lame. I just didn't see why a certain character changed his motivation so easily. It felt so unrealistic and forced. Overall, this wasn't a terrible movie, but it's certainly one of Disney's weakest films. Don't be like "Oh it's fine because it's for kids" because there are better kids movies. Also I don't think children would enjoy this too much(? I personally didn't enjoy it as a kid but now that I see animation with different eyes I decided to give it a chance and I just watched it and I barely remember things about this movie. It's so forgettable and dull. It doesn't have relatable or charismatic characters, the comedy it's pretty lame, the emotional moments are lame, I don't know, I just don't see how can this movie be enjoyable for kids. I think they'll get bored too. Also I've seen that the people that, strangely, like this movie laud the "message" but I just don't see what this movie tried to say. Brotherhood? Maturity? How? None of those themes are communicated in a logical way or according to the character actions and the overall story. I don't know, this movie left me nothing.

I think I like the concept, it has potential. It's well shot, it's well lit, the pacing is good, the character interactions feel natural, the dialogue is really good, well thought-out and thought provoking. At times it had some questionable editing and most of the characters are forgettable and there's nothing too special about them. Also the movie doesn't really bother to explain what's the whole point of "El Hoyo" (the setting), like, who made it and for what purpose or something like that. Nevertheless, the movie is pretty good. I guess all its disturbing moments and gore feel with a purpose and not just gratuitous. It has some symbolism and allegories that I guess communicate the underlying messages pretty well. Many of the messages are nothing new but this movie has a lot to say and I guess it said it well. It's a competitively made good movie and really nothing too outstanding about it. It could've fleshed out some story elements and world building but as it is, it's pretty good.

Shrek Forever After9
Mar 26, 2020
This is the TRUE Shrek 3. It's such a day and night improvement over the god-awful third movie. This isn't a "Cars 2 and 3" situation, because this isn't just an "okay" movie like Cars 3 is...This is an actually great film. Sure it doesn't have the same lighthearted tone as 1 or 2. It feels "darker" (well I might be using the term wrong but the tone is different, that's for sure) and larger scale and the "fairytale satire" the franchises is known for is almost absent here and the very few it has is more subtle here. It fleshes out its protagonist perfectly as well as other characters like Fiona (and hell, even Donkey). The story flows perfectly. There's not a single slow or boring moment. While it doesn't have the same amount of jokes as the previous movies, the few it has it's actually funny. The story it tells, the resolution and underlying messages are pretty powerful and all its emotional moments work really well. It doesn't feel like a spin-off or anything, it feels like the next step following the story set in Shrek 2. It makes Shrek the Third completely pointless because you don't have to watch it to understand anything. The movie makes sure through its writing that you can enjoy it without even having to watch any of the previous movies. It does stand on its own. I feel like this movie is pretty underrated and "overhated". I feel insulted when people say this one was the worst. Sure, I don't think it's the best but it's on par with Shrek 1 and 2. If Shrek 3 didn't exist, then probably Shrek could've been one of the best animated film trilogies ever. I do understand why this could be hated...Like I said, it doesn't have the same lighthearted tone as the previous movies, but that doesn't matter, because this is an example that you can change the tone of a franchise as long as you make it **** this **** just great. It deserved an Oscar nomination.

Shrek the Third1

I'm just gonna be quick: What is this movie trying to be!?
Is it trying to be a Shrek film? Like...More of the same? Or is it trying to be a fun family-friendly comedy?
Well, for starters, it fails spectacularly as a fun family-friendly comedy. It is probably one of the most unfunny movies Dreamworks has ever made. All its attempts at "humor" just failed. It's not funny. It's filled with uncreative and unfunny gags, nonsensical pop culture references and jokes that haven't aged at all (There were jokes that were just "Prince Charming is affeminate and that's funny, lol"). I laughed at moments that I don't think should've been comical, specially certain scene at the beggining of certain character's death, like, it was shown as something comical. The score is forgettable and not memorable at all. The characters don't have any real arcs or development. New characters like Arthur and Merlin are stupid and Prince Charming as a villain is a complete JOKE. Okay, is this movie at least a Shrek ****. It even fails at being a SHREK movie. It seemed like the writers were like "Uhm oh yes I know how to write a Shrek ****'s a satire of fairy tales and it's a comedy with pop culture references and pop culture songs!" Except Shrek isn't supposed to be just that. Shrek 1 and 2 are excellent satires of fairytales and their tired formulas and characters, but they also had some really effective emotional moments and simple yet powerful underlying themes. In this movie there's NOTHING like that.
-Fairytale satire? Just barely. None of the "satire" was funny or creative at all. This is apparent with the princesses...Like, yeah, I know Snow White sings and talks to animals...Where's the joke on that? Yeah Sleeping Beauty is the one who sleeps...Haha lol so funny 11/10.
-Pop culture references? Like I said, they were stupid, pointless, nonsensical and NOT funny. Like the scene were Arthur leaves his school saying to everyone "I will build this city on rock and **** that a joke? It was just a reference!
-Pop culture songs? They are forgettable and so poorly used. There's a funeral scene in which they have "Live and let die" playing in the background...What does that song have to do with the context of the scene?
-Emotional moments and simple yet powerful messages? Ha, you gotta be kidding me. There is nothing like that in this movie and any attempts at being "emotional" were totally cheesy and corny. The movie does have a theme...I guess, but it's shoved in so awkwardly by exposition, almost as if the writers were like: "Hey don't be mad, this movie does have a DEEEEEP message!!!!" I don't consider this one as part of the Shrek canon, sorry. This is the movie that turned Shrek into a meme, into a JOKE. This is the example of living long enough to become the enemy instead of "dying a hero". If this movie was cancelled and we were left with only two movies, then Shrek could've still be regarded as a respected movie franchise.

Flushed Away7
Mar 22, 2020
2006 was a lame year for animation. None of the big studios like Disney, Dreamworks or Pixar were doing their best and, in this case, not even Aardman. I'm not saying Flushed Away was bad, I guess it deserved a nomination for Best Animated Feature more than Monster House for example but it's kind of a letdown compared to Aardman's previous work. It has an all-star cast and it never felt like the actors were there for a paycheck, the performances were genuinely good. The concept is pretty bizarre but the direction and writing made it work and turned it into a widly entertaining movie with good humor and charismatic characters. I just don't know what else to say, honestly, it's entertaining but it's also pretty forgettable for the most part.

Cars6
Mar 22, 2020
I don't think Cars is as bad as people think it is. Sure, it's a letdown compared to the Pixar movies prior to this one, but it doesn't do anything offensively bad but I know that it also doesn't do anything outstanding. The story is the typical movie about an unlikeable protagonist who goes through a journey outside his luxuries to learn humility. It doesn't try anything new storytelling wise. It has clichés and tons of filler scenes (That's probably why the movie feels slow) and it doesn't communicate to the audience a powerful or deep message or anything, it just lacks that "Pixar magic". Probably my biggest problem with the movie is the world building. Why are they cars? This is probably the dumbest concept and the dumbest world Pixar has ever had. It just makes the wolrd building so confusing, like, how are they able to hang pictures or posters in walls if they don't have hands or thumbs? How are they living? How the hell do they AGE ?(because Doc Hudson is supposed to be an old guy) How do they have children? Why is everything feeling like the human world but it isn't supposed to be a human world but instead, a world of cars? HOW??? WHY??? WHAT??? This story could literally work with humans driving cars, at least if it was that way I wouldn't be complaining about how stupid this idea was. The movie does have some positives, of course. Like I said, it's not as BAD as people say it is. Sometimes the score is pretty good, I like the "Our Town" song, specially the scene it is being played, like, that is probably my favorite scene of the movie because that is the only semblance of "Pixar magic" this movie **** I think that's it. The rest of the aspects were ****. Overall, this movie was pretty meh. It's still much better than most of Illumination's catalog and this is probably the "best" out of the Cars trilogy. If you don't want to watch it, just watch the "Our Town" scene or just listen to the song, you're welcome.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron8
Mar 19, 2020
This is definitely one of Dreamwork's most underrated films. I just saw it and I think it was really good. I could talk all day about the animation and how impressive a lot of shots and sequences are. While the movie is short I felt like it was paced well and the story flowed pretty smoothly. The problem with its short length is the character stuff, because besides Spirit, any other character is just a plot device (Well, probably Little Creek wasn't as one-dimensional as the rest of the characters. At least he had an understandable motivation). The music is pretty good and some of the songs were also pretty good, even if a couple of them were pop-rock kinda songs that didn't fit the tone. I like the concept of it being a story with animals that don't speak, I think it was to show how animals do have feelings even if they can't speak (which is one of the main arguments in favor of animal cruelty: "They don't feel pain because they can't say they're in pain"). I feel like that is so powerful to me and it has some emotional moments that were really effective. However, while I love the concept of not having them speak, there's a narrator (Who's supposed to be Spirit) and that's probably my biggest issue with the movie: The narration. It was genuinely obnoxious because it was so redundant. The narration serves no purpose other than to explain what we are literally watching onscreen. For example, Spirit is captured by the villains and the narrator says: "I was captured by these men and I was **** don't say, dude. Other than that I recommend this movie. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a movie that was made with love and effort. It has a cute message about animal liberation that I think it was communicated in a great way. I know this is intended to be for kids and the story needs to be easy to understand, but I guess that they could just remove the narration.

Uncut Gems7
Mar 19, 2020
It was pretty good. This movie definetely has a lot of interesting stuff. There's some nice cinematography and camerawork, some nice editing choices, some nice visuals, some nice music, and the performances were great. This is an unpopular opinion but while Adam Sandler was good I don't think he had one of the best performances of the year. It's different compared to his other **** movies but he was good. I think I found interesting the "chaotic" nature of this movie, with so many scenes having crowded rooms with so much screaming and yelling that it is almost incomprehensible at times. It's not a flaw, in fact, I liked that direction and it fits the tone of the movie, so, good job. I feel like the story at its core it's pretty simple but the way it's presented is...Convoluted? It's a messy movie. If you don't pay a lot of attention from the very beggining you will be lost. I would like to think that's the style of the directors, that's how they tell stories (I haven't seen Good Time), but it just wasn't my cup of tea and in my opinion, some scenes and plot points could've been shorter. I loved the final act, it was pretty intense and engaging even if the ending it's the most predictable thing in the world. Overall, it's definetely an interesting movie but it's not something I would rewatch any time soon. Maybe I'm an idiot and I didn't get the movie, so I still recommend it because like I said, it has some interesting elements and you might think it's the best movie of the year and whatever.

The Road to El Dorado7
Mar 18, 2020
A slightly above average adventure comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously and it's meant to have a fun time. It has some good humor (although some jokes weren't funny), the characters are fun to watch and the pacing is good for the most part. The writing is fine I guess but there were some plot points that could've been fixed (Like the forced romance with two characters with no chemistry) and at times the movie drags with some filler scenes that could've been cut or made shorter (Like a battle that happens right before the third act, honestly, that scene was pointless). This might be an unpopular opinion, but I didn't really like the songs. Some of them were pretty forgettable and I felt like the movie was like "Oh I'm an animated kids movie, I need to have songs". The animation is fantastic. I have a love for 2D animation and I think it's hard to find a mainstream 2D movie you could say it looks bad. The backgrounds are eye-popping and beautiful, the characters are expressive and their movement flows smoothly. Really the animation saves this movie and gives it a lot of extra credit. Overall, this is one of Dreamwork's most underrated movies. It's a shame that it bombed when it first came out. I really liked it. I was entertained and invested in the journey even when it had some clichés and pointless scenes. I'm not gonna nitpick too much because this movie is really easy to nitpick. Here's one: "How come everyone speaks English?"

Coraline10
Mar 17, 2020
Even if you don't like this movie, you have to admit that the stop motion animation is amazing. There are some genuinely breathtaking sequences and even if the story has flaws I still will give this movie tons of credit for the effort made in the animation, cinematography, shot composition, etc. Everything from the production design to the character design, to the overall mood and atmosphere is genuinely haunting and scary. It creates a tone and a truly creative world that I don't see too many kids movies do now. It doesn't have a shoehorned-in comic relief character, it doesn't have forced emotional moments, this movie doesn't give a **** to follow that "kids movie formula" and I really want more movies like this. The story flows quickly and all thanks to the writing and character development (along with the editing, of course). We get to know a lot about Coraline in a matter of minutes. The pacing was perfect until the third act, which I felt like it dragged a lot. This movie feels like it ends two times and I thought that the script should've get another draft. I really love this movie, it's Laika's best movie until now.

Fantastic Mr. Fox10
Mar 15, 2020
I still can't find words to describe how much I love this movie. Maybe it's the lighthearted and upbeat tone that never slows down to have a forced emotional moment. Maybe it's the fun characters and how fun to watch they are and how well written they are. Maybe it's the impressive stop motion animation, shot composition, cinematography and all the visual aspects. Maybe it's just the excellent screenplay which, despite telling a lighthearted and fun story, there are some truly depressing moments underneath. I just don't know what is what I like more from this movie. I just think it's a brilliantly executed story.

Up9
Mar 14, 2020
It seems like people just watch the first 10 minutes of the movie and then think this movie is a masterpiece and one of the best animated films ever **** isn't, sadly. Now, sure, it's definetely one of Pixar's best movies, but it doesn't reach the same level of storytelling brilliance like The Incredibles, Wall-E, Ratatouille or Monsters, Inc (also from Pete Docter, the director of this movie) but it is still a great film. The main problem with UP is the sudden tonal shift after the opening. I LOVE the opening, like most people. I think it's brilliantly told and with the brilliant score by Michael Giacchino, and it's one of my favorite sequences in film animation, but after that, the tone shifted almost entirely. What I'm referring to is that the opening feels like a mature, art-house like story, but after that intro it just turns into your typical family friendly comedy adventure film. It almost feels like the opening was written and directed by someone else. I've said the word "opening" a lot now, but okay, let's move on. What about the rest of the movie? Well, the movie does have heart. It still tries to avoid "talking down to its audience" and presents a well told story with cute underlying messages. The movie wastes time at points introducing unexpected subplots, because, I guess the writers thought that they needed a threat/villain. Granted, I was never bored, the movie is still fun to watch and I was invested to see Carl accomplishing what he promised. The characters are a mixed bag. I love Carl and his development, his changes, his personality, all feel justified. Russell was annoying at first and he made some really dumb choices for no reason, but I guess that he was okay, he isn't a terrible character, and I guess that they did a good job in representing a naïve, immature child without being unwatchable. Charles Muntz was...Alright I guess. I mean his actions do make sense considering his motivations. The score by Michael Giacchino is brilliant, the animation is still impressive, the cinematography and shot composition are still pretty good. I mean it does have a lot of redeeming qualities, despite the sudden change in tone after the opening ends. Overall, UP is an entertaining family film with a lot of heart and effort put into it, with a well told story with mature underlying themes, though it could've been a more emotional, art-house like story. That opening promised so much.

Toy Story 49
Mar 9, 2020
I deleted my first review, because I gave it a 10/10. Now after buying the Blu-Ray and watching it a couple more times and the fact that it won the Oscar (which didn't deserve), I decided to make a re-review and lower the score by one point. Toy Story 4 isn't Pixar at its best but I still think it's pretty good. It ended up having a purpose to the franchise and giving it a (hopefully) definitive closure this time. I know that this movie has divided fans, specially the way it ended, but personally I still think that it felt like a movie with love and effort put into it and not just a cashgrab, despite now not being as good as I thought it was the first time I watched it. It still feels like a Toy Story movie: It has a well written story with mature underlying themes that were presented in an excellent way. It does feel like a movie that explores the themes of finding a purpose in life and running away from toxic environments if we can't do anything to improve them. I personally think that the way the story was executed is still better than Toy Story 3 because that one had ridiculous plot conveniences and really bad jokes, despite the ending still being a lot more emotional than this one.
The score is just as excellent as in the previous movies. The returning characters and new characters are compelling and fun to watch, despite how annoying Ducky and Bunny can get at times. However, I have mixed feelings about the character development: Most of the returning cast have nothing to do and they barely have any plot relevance, but the characters the movie decides to focus on are well developed. In my previous review I stated that the new characters are memorable and have a good development but now I don't think that, because Duke Kaboom is just Keanu Reeves in a Toy Story movie (while fun to watch, he doesn't really have too much to do) and Ducky and Bunny, like I said, can get pretty unfunny and at times they kill the tone of the movie, but none of the characters are bad or annoying enough to make the movie unwatchable, that includes Bo Peep, who I don't think it was a bad character like many say, she was just fine. It has a lot of energy, the pacing is fluid and the movie never gets boring, but because the stakes aren't as high as the previous movies, it feels like it lacks a genuine sense of danger or urgency. I mean, it does, but not as much, but I was still invested the whole movie because of the motivations of the main characters. Sure, it feels a lot more smaller scale than the previous movies because it only takes place in a couple of locations, but I think I'm okay with watching a good story set in those few places. Overall, I like this movie, despite now thinking that it isn't as good as the first time I watched it. It's a really good movie, much better than other Pixar sequels/prequels like Finding Dory, Incredibles 2 or Monsters University, but it's obvious that it's an unnecessary (yet not pointless) film. And while it is good, it didn't deserve the Oscar. Many people say that Klaus should've won and I kinda agree. My favorite movie out of the nominees was I Lost My Body but Klaus was such a groundbreaking film, at least in the visual **** no, let's give it to Pixar despite not deserving it. 9/10, if I happen to lower the score once more, I'll have to do that for Toy Story 3 (which I gave it a 9/10) too, because, like I said, I like this one just a little bit more than that one.

No words coming from me could ever describe how I feel about this masterpiece of film animation. People who say that this is the best animated movie of all time or one of the best are not exaggerating, they are totally right. There's something about this movie that makes me watch it again and again...I don't understand! This movie is actually pretty straight forward and the story is easy to understand. I mean, after all it's a kids movie, it has to be easy to understand, but what I'm referring to is that despite being a simple story,it has so much to say and t has so many themes and underlying messages (some more subtle than others). I don't know what to like more: The complex and well developed characters, the gorgeous look of the movie, the beautiful score, the genius writing and direction...Really, it has it all. This movie is a journey, a simple yet fantastic journey that takes us to a creative new world full with so many unique characters while also making us think and see the metaphors and allegories. This isn't just a movie, this is an experience. I highly doubt there's going to ever be another masterpiece like this in a long time. A 10/10 is just not enough, hell, even an 11/10 isn't enough.

Finally, after three years, Pixar finally brings us a new "original" movie. By that I mean that it's not a sequel. Was the wait for more Pixar creativity worth it? I would say: "Kind of". "Onward" ended up being a pretty good movie, with some creative ideas, some funny moments and some emotional moments. The world the movie is set in has potential, but visually speaking, there's nothing memorable in it. Besides the design of the houses, I guess, the world lacks any style or personality. The voice acting is decent, I guess. Tom Holland was playing himself...I couldn't stop hearing Spider-Man. I guess the director just told him "Act as if you're playing Spider-Man" and that's it. Chris Pratt was annoying at first, but I later got used to his voice. It has some themes and underlying messages that were presented in a nice way. Some of them in an enotional way and others in a funny way. The story is fun, highly energetic and emotional at times, even if some of the emotional moments were more cheesy than emotional. I liked it overall but the story just feels so formulaic and familiar. Sure it had some twists I didn't see coming and the movie could've been a lot more predictable and boring but it almost seems like Pixar is stuck in the same plot structure for many its movies. I mean, it was an enjoyable experience, I bursted out laughing many times but I don't feel that it had that "Pixar magic" in it.

The Two Popes6

The performances from Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins were really good and some of the scenes they share together are interesting to watch and not much else. The movie actually started good. The conversations Pope Benedict and Cardinal Bergoglio share are actually pretty well written and acted. I could even rewatch any day some of those conversations they have. It is interesting to see their opposite ideologies and thoughts about the catholic church. However, I found myself dozing off during the last hour of the movie. I don't know, the movie just stopped being interesting after a while, not because I'm not interested in the catholic church but because the way the rest of the movie is executed during that last hour is really...Boring. The characters stopped having charisma or acting like human beings and it felt like they were just reading a Power Point presentation to the audience. It relies HEAVILY on flashbacks and narration and that's why it becomes boring. I could barely finish watching it. It started really good but started to decline until it became a boring and uninteresting biopic. The cinematography and other technical aspects are nothing special. I can't say they are bad but just...Bland and uninspired. I mean the movie looks like those stock demo videos you see on TV screens in stores to show their capabilities, which it's nothing bad, but just to give you an idea of how dull the visual presentation is. Overall, while not a bad movie, it's a movie that could've been so much better.

Jan 27, 2020
Oh my God this movie is so stupid. The story makes no sense and its twists just left me confused and asking so many times "Why?". The characters are not characters and their "character traits" are just stupid...Like, how is one of them an "MIT graduate" and yet her actions don't tell me anything about her intelligence. Nothing is good or entertaining: The action is incoherent and boring, the direction and cinematography are dull, the performances are boring...I mean, I don't know what was I expecting, honestly. It's not like previous Charlies Angels movies were masterpieces but I somehow gave it the benefit of the doubt and OMG was this movie soooo bad. Don't blame sexism or "Men who don't want to see a movie starring women" like the directress **** reason this movie bombed is because literally no one asked for a Charlie's Angels reboot and if you still make it, it had to be at least **** it wasn't.

This movie isn't about the characters or the story...This movie is an experience. Really if you think about the characters, they are pretty weak and underdeveloped, but at least the performances of the main actors are pretty good. The story is pretty straight-forward get to point A to point B and there isn't anything too special to it, but, like I said, this is more about the experience. This movie achieves to make the viewer feel part of the war, which I think that was the intention of the one-continuous take "gimmick" (which it isn't). This movie is called 1917 instead of "The Adventure of blue-eyed blond Soldier" (that's why the characters are forgettable, I can't remember their names) because the long take is what adds to the experience. Sure, the long take isn't obviously anything new and movies like Birdman (I know, they are completely different genres) make it better, but for this movie it works. Some moments feel slow and all but, again, it adds to the whole point of feeling part of the war. The sound design and the cinematography are great and the score, while sometimes it sounds like generic stock music, sometimes it sounds amazing. Overall, this movie is more about the experience than the characters or plot. I recommend it because is still a pretty good movie. I don't think it's a masterpiece or the best of the year but it is certainly a really well done film.

I love how this manages to be a crowd-pleasing, straight-forward and accesible film but also a thought-provoking, well shot, incredibly well written and acted movie. It's so much in so little time. This movie achieves to be in like five different genres and never feels inconsistent. The transition from a standard drama to a comedy, then to a horror film, then to back to a drama, back to a comedy and so on feels so natural and never took me away from the movie. This might be one of the most funny non-comedy films of 2019, one of the best acted, one of the best written and one of the most entertaining yet complex films I've seen in 2019. There wasn't a single moment that felt slow or boring, the movie never stops and constantly moves forward to show us something new about the characters and the story and does it in an incredibly entertaining and engaging way. This movie is also really intense. It creates tension so well while also making you laugh or feel scared or disturbed. It's just too much to handle. It's a complete cinematic experience that I think I didn't get with any other movie I saw last year and I've at least seen all the Best Picture Oscar nominations and I have to say that this is the best out of all of them. Like the director said in his Golden Glibes speech: "Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films" and he's absolutely right.

The Lighthouse10
Jan 22, 2020
This movie is an experience. The presentation is fantastic. I can't believe how this movie manages to be so haunting and scary. Everything from the sets to the sound to the lighting adds to the haunting presentation that is done right. The aspect ratio is to add the feeling of loneliness and claustrophobia this movie wants to make the viewer feel and the black and white look isn't made because it looks cool but also, not only to make us feel that we are transported to sometime in the past but also makes some great contrasts that make this movie almost feel like in complete darkness. The **** my God, this might be one of the best acted movies of 2019. The Green Goblin is great like in pretty much every role he takes. Thanks to the lighting and his jawdropping facial expressions he looked genuinely terrifying during the famous monologue scene. Edward Cullen is the proof that (almost)any actor can be amazing if he's with the right director and I bought every action he made and every word he said. This movie is filled with so much creativity and while the story itself can be predictable because of the circumstances surrounding the characters there's so much to think about. All the metaphors, the allegories, every element is there for a reason and it's up to the viewer to think. This is what makes or breaks this movie because you love it or hate it. This might be a weird movie for some (specially the masses who want more straight-forward, surface-level stories) but for me, it's a fantastic movie in which we learn a lot about the characters and all those plot elements that might feel confusing are done to add to the feeling of mystery surrounding the characters and the setting. I feel that this movie is also a clever commentary about superstition and how we don't really know what's actually real or what not. This is a brilliant movie in every single aspect and even if you don't get the story or the point of the movie (I think I did) you have to live this experience. It is NECESSARY to watch it in a theater or at home but with a good sound system and a big screen.

This movie is all about the wonderful performances and the engaging story. The directing, cinematography and overall presentation are fine but it's a very entertaining and well written story, with complex and realistic characters with both pros and flaws that will make almost impossible to see who is the "hero" and who is the "villain". This is not a movie about two people yelling at each other it's much more than that. To make it short: Brilliant writing, brilliant characters, entertaining story and masterful performances. The only thing I didn't like as much is the score. I mean, the score is not bad but sometimes I think it didn't fit the movie. Without context, the score itself is amazing but when it's played during the movie I couldn't stop thinking about Toy Story. Overall, I highly recommend it.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya10
Jan 12, 2020
Stunning animation with brilliant storytelling, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya has the elements to be a flawless film. Its powerful, heartwarming, devastating and thought-provoking story says so much with so little. It explores themes like the quick passage of time, what it means to be a human, a daring critique to old traditions, questioning why things have to be the way they are supposed to be, how artificial everything in this world feels, the meaning of **** is a movie about so much. While some of those themes are shown in an obvious way, some of them are more subtle. The writing is wonderful. The characters are all well developed, complex, realistic and compelling. The way it looks just complements the brilliant storytelling. Its unique visual style, specially compared to other Ghibli films, gives this movie its own personality. Its presentation is truly amazing. The score is also beautiful. This is an outstanding cinematic experience that can be enjoyed by everyone. It's not an abstract art film, it's actually pretty straight forward and easy to understand, yet it's not a surface level movie. Movies like this are why animation is also a form of art. Not only in the visual aspect but in how the story uses its animation in a clever way to take the audience to a never before seen world. It is infurating to see Big Hero 6 take the award instead of this movie. This is genuine art.

A realistic, genuine love story told very well. It has good-looking visuals, the animation is fantastic, the sets look immersive and engaging and the score is amazing. The leads develop a genuine chemistry as the movie goes on (because at first I thought that their romance felt superficial) and it has much more going on than just the love story. It's thought provoking and you can get so many things from this movie and understand the point of it in different ways and perspectives. This is an excellent romantic movie that will not bore you in the slightest. I highly recommend it.

Tower9
Jan 11, 2020
Tower is a masterfully crafted documentary. A totally unique experience. This stands out from many documentaries because it presents the events in a very stylized way. If you somehow think that rotoscoping is a lazy way of doing animation, I'm sorry to tell you that you are wrong, because rotoscoping is actually very hard and time consuming. It is nice to see this documentary benefit from the animation to give the audience a different visual experience. As a documentary, it does a really good job in making the audience connect with the people affected by this tragedy. Like someone else said in this site: "It focuses more on the humanity and less in the killer" and I agree. My only issue with the movie is that there isn't too much animation in the second half of the movie. When the movie gets closer to the end it starts using more live action footage of the actual people interviewed and also starts to reuse animated footage and we don't get that many unique animated scenes. It's a very short movie and, while I don't want to call the movie "Lazy" because it definitely isn't, I felt that it was kinda of a letdown that I started to see less and less unique animated sequences. Regardless, this is a very unique documentary and you should check it out.

An absolutely brilliant movie. It has no dialogue, yet you get so much from the characters and the story. If this was in charge of a less talented crew, this movie would have a lot of dialogue, exposition and unnecessary humor. We don't have any of that because it's not necessary! I found brilliant the fact that they managed to craft an engaging and powerful story with no words. The characters have no names (**** it really necessary?) And yet they became memorable characters, not only because of their design but because we are shown their motivations and personalities just with visuals. I like the fact that the movie isn't surface level...Well, it can be if you just watch the movie without thinking about anything deeper but so many things are left up to interpretation. The score is beautfiul and helps make the story to be even more powerful. The animation is amazing and the movie looks beautiful. It looks that a lot of effort was put in the colors and design of every frame of the movie and I love that. I get that the movie can be loved or hated because it's not a conventional film. It has so much personality and uniqueness that if you expect a straight-forward emotional story with deep dialogue, you might end up hating it, because this isn't anything like that. Sure if I start to tell the story out loud it might sound like a boring movie, but there are so many things that really help a story that, on paper, sounds boring. This is an example of how a "boring" story can be turned into something wonderful. This is an amazing movie and I highly recommend it.

Impressive and colorful visuals and beautifully animated. The journey is engaging and the places the characters explore are wonderful. However I feel that the story and characters could've been better developed and the writing can get very cheesy, but other than that, I think it is a great movie. Not a masterpiece, sadly, but it's a great movie.

Fantastic movie. It made a very good job in making me care about the characters. Every character feels compelling and realistic and has an understandable motivation. The visual style gives this movie its own personality. I loved how it's animated and the look of everything from the characters to the sets. Don't be fooled by its colorful and lighthearted appearance, because this is not a kids movie. I can't say it's an adult film, because it isn't either, but it's refreshing, at least in film animation, to see a movie starring a bunch of kids to be more adult-oriented and mature. There isn't a single moment that feels dull or unnecessary. The pacing is great because it always moves forward to tell us something new about the characters. The innocence of the kids is well captured here. I cared about these children and that was a shocker for me because kids in movies have the reputation to be annoying, but here, they are well developed and everyone has a distinct personality. I was genuinely shocked to learn about everything that they went through and I really wanted to see them accomplish what they want. This is a fantastic movie anyone should watch. My only issue with it is that it's way too short, but I think it doesn't really bother me because the story it tells in that short runtime, it's genuinely interesting, thought-provoking and heartwarming. Seriously watch it, specially if you are interested in animation.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker5
Jan 7, 2020
While it might not be the worst Star Wars movie, it will be remembered (or well, maybe not) as the most bland and insipid Star Wars movie ever. Objectively speaking, as a movie, it's actually fine. Not terrible, not great, just fine. The technical aspects are great once again: The VFX, the sound design, the production design, John William's final Star Wars score, all that it's great. The performances are fine...I mean, with a dull script the actors didn't have much to work with. The script is full of cheesy lines and I know that Star Wars has always had its fair share of cheesy or corny lines but some of the dialogue here comes close to cringeworthy. It also has a lot of plot conviniences. The "force" is now portrayed as a "Mary Sue" because it could do anything, apparently. Some twists were dumb and even unnecessary. Many characters besides Rey and Kylo Ren have literally nothing to do the whole movie. New characters like the Richard E. Grant character don't even have any character, they are just there. Lando barely does anything in the movie. His inclusion felt more like cheap fanservice instead of having a real purpose and returning characters like Palpatine are now boring! Speaking about **** my God...This should've been called "Fan service: The Movie". Like I said, the twists were dumb and felt straight out of a bad fanfic and also, like I said, the returning characters are boring! This whole movie is a demonstration of Disney trying not to piss off anybody. They played it sooooooo safe. They no longer want to try anything new, they are just trying to please the most fans as possible, and, judging by the User Score, they failed, because there are still fans ranting about this movie. This trilogy is a mess, because it's not consistent. I mean, the prequels, as much as I hate them and dislike them AS MOVIES, they are consistent...Consistently bad. This **** my God: We got the first one in which fans were angry because it was a ripoff of A New Hope, they wanted something new. Disney tries to make something new with The Last Jedi and everyone hated it because "They ruined Star Wars". So now they made this one because no one liked the new direction and fans now hate it because "it's too late". Like I said, as much as I don't like the prequels and still think they are inferior to any other movie in the franchise, at least they can get so bad they are **** this...This is bad **** its bad elements are not entertaining at all...

It's a decent family friendly animated comedy and nothing else. The humor was consistently good. Sure, sometimes it fell flat (I mean, there's a 50 Shades of Grey joke) but most of the time I liked the humor. The leads develop a fun dynamic and the performances of their voice actors were pretty solid. It doesn't really want to be taken seriously (and when it tried, it was extremely cheesy) and that's fine. It isn't bad but it wasn't like a great movie or anything, it was fine, if you want to watch it just go ahead.

Isle of Dogs9
Dec 12, 2019
First of all, the visual presentation is fantastic. I mostly give tons of extra points to stop motion films because, even if they are not good films in everything else besides the animation, I know what a pain in the a** making stop motion is. Not saying that 2D and 3D are easier (honestly any animation form has its level of difficulty) but stop motion requires a lot of extra work (Building the sets, the characters and all that). In that aspect, Isle of Dogs is great. I loved the visuals. I love the insane amount of detail in basically every single shot. It's really unbelievable. Not only the animation, but the style and the use of colors in general. The composition of each shot is also pretty good. Regardless of what you think about Wes Anderson, you have to admit that he knows what he is doing. I like the character design, specially the dogs. It's kinda refreshing to see a movie about dogs in which the dogs look..."Ugly". By that, I mean that the movie doesn't want you to care or to connect with the characters just because they are cute like most animated movies with animals as protagonists. Because they are not cute (They really aren't, they look terryfing but in a good way) the movie does a great job in making you like them in a different way: The writing. Now, I have mixed feelings about the writing. I thought that there were a lot of writing choices I just didn't agree with, specially plot points and character resolutions that I thought could've been written better. Also, most of the characters were very underdeveloped. I think that only Chief and Atari were the only characters that actually had a character. They were really well developed and fairly well written. The scenes between those two characters might be some of my favorite of the movie. There were other characters that I honestly think could've been completely removed, like the "love interest" of Chief. Many of the characters were one note and leave the movie halfway through. This is why I say that only Chief and Atari are the only actual characters because those are the ones that get the most screentime and actual relevance to the plot. Most of the acting was really bland. Maybe that was the direction that Wes Anderson gave them, but I honestly didn't like most of the acting. Most of the characters sound almost exactly the same. The only performance I liked was Brian Cranston's (who played Chief). I appreciated details in the movie as a whole, like when characters are speaking in japanese and there are no subtitles and the only way we get to know what they are saying is by an in-movie translator character or by an actual subtitle but when it's an important line. That was pretty cool, because, honestly I feel that many of the things the Japanese characters said were irrelevant. I feel like the "gimmick" of putting japanese text on the screen and underneath that text the english translation in a small font was cool at first but then starting to be overused to the point of feeling like the movie was doing it "just because it looks cool". Another issue I have, which is more of a nitpick is the fact that dogs speak in english. Why do they speak english? Do humans understand them? Do they actually talk or maybe it's just a metaphorical way of representing their thoughts? I don't know. But those are just nitpicks, like, the movie is not ruined because of that or anything. But what really stops this movie from being a flawless movie (which I think it could've been) is the writing and how some plot points are executed. This is still a great movie and while it's sadly not a masterpiece, it's really worth watching.

Wow I didn't realize that Dreamworks re-released Missing Link! There was just a 5 month gap!
Wait, this isn't Missing Link, right? To be fair, while it has the same done to death concept as Missing Link (the characters discover an exotic creature that is trying not to be captured by the villains) it tried to be something different by giving it a "fantasy" twist. The Yeti (whose name is Everest) seems to have like powers or something like that. It seems that the writers thought that they had a good idea on paper, but didn't know how to execute it. So, they executed it in a really bland and formulaic way. I can't say this movie is totally predictable because there were some things that I actually didn't see coming, but those things were really dumb. First of all: The visuals. They look fine. I thought that at times they looked a bit cheap but I forgive it because this was made with a pretty small budget compared to other Dreamworks movies like HTTYD 3. It might be the least expensive Dreamworks movie since Captain Underpant's insanely low budget (for a mainstream production). There are some nice colors and I think that the presentation is one of the few things I genuinely liked. I wasn't a big fan of the character design however, because the characters, honestly, look like rejects from other movies. Like, the protagonist (Yi) looked like an unused design for Gogo from Big Hero 6. I don't know, I think that the character design is, not bad, but really nothing special and forgettable. The actual characters...Well...They have no characters. No motivations, nothing. Yi might be the only character that had SOME depth, but in the end even she was really underdeveloped. The rest of the characters are just one note. There's the fat kid who is in the movie just to be annoying with his annoying voice and then there's the other guy, who is like very metrosexual. The generic egocentric guy who only cares about his personal image and has probably some of the worst dialogue. He frequently says things like "Uh this photo isn't getting enough likes" or "Hashtag selfie" or those cringy ****. Writers, please, make sure to avoid using any "Internet" terms unless is essential to the plot, because, seriously, the movie won't age well. The villains are just insane. One of them has absolutely no motivation. Like, why does he want Everest? Because he wants to have a collection of rare creatures of something? Even Charles Muntz from UP who also had a similar motivation of "get the creature" was more fleshed out because he actually had a personality. This movie's villains don't have any character. Again, just paper thin characters. The writing is really bad. Well, it's not like, Arctic Dogs or Uglydolls level of bad, but it is filled with tons of plot conviniences and really bad dialogue. The story, like I said, had really stupid plot conviniences. Everything seems to happen just because the script says so. Many events in the movie don't make sense and don't feel natural. The movie failed to make me be invested in the story and to care about the characters. Everest's powers seem to work just because the plot demands it. I never saw the limits of his powers he could just do whatever he wanted apparently. Some of the music was decent, but there were times in which the movie used licensed music **** just didn't work. I start to disagree in the use of licensed music in movies, because there are a lot of movies where they make wrong use of it. By that I mean that sometimes movies put music that doesn't fit the tone or the scene at all and probably did that because the music sounded good. Again, writers and directors: DON'T use licensed music unless the lyrics and music genre feel appropriate. Overall, I don't consider this "wasted potential" because, honestly, I don't know how to make a great movie out of this done to death concept. What I think it could've been more cool is to make the movie be set in like a village outside the city and make Yi like an orphan. I would've liked that better because Yi's family is basically pointless in the story and the way they end up outside the city is just stupid. In conclusion: Below average movie. It looks nice but everything else, while not bad, is ****. I never thought I would say this but Missing Link is way better. I don't like Missing Link because it is also a pretty mediocre movie, but at least that one was so much more entertaining and had some good humor, but this one...Just felt like a waste of time.

Your Name.9

Great movie overall. I think it has so many good elements that make this movie as good as it is. First of all: Gorgeous. It has some great animation and the backgrounds look stunning. This movie looks beautiful. I was amazed the whole movie by the insane amount of detail every frame of this movie has. If this movie got something right is the presentation. You have to be a hater to deny that. The score for the most part was beautiful and fits the movie really well. However, the movie has some really bad music at times. For example, at the beggining, during the "opening", the music that was playing was like a really corny pop-rock song straight out of the 2000s, and to me, made the opening feel really cheesy and left me a bad first impression. There are moments in the movie where, instead of using more of that beautiful score, they decide to put more pop-rock music. It kinda ruined the tone of the scene. But it is not a really big problem, because, like I said, for most of the movie, it has a really good score. Other thing I really liked is the writing. The dialogue and the way the characters are written, specially character interactions, is really good, and the twists and turns were well executed and turned the movie in something I wasn't expecting. Speaking about that, that is both a praise and a criticism, because if something doesn't let this movie get a 10/10 from me is this: IT'S TOO COMPLICATED! The story is just too hard to swallow. While not incomprehensible, this movie was something I wasn't expecting: Complicated. Now, don't say I'm a braindead **** because this movie is too smart for me. I think it is the subject matter what really makes this movie really hard to follow. (Kinda spoiler) A movie about this crazy **** of alternate universes and time travel and all that is kinda hard to write because there is a 99% chance that you will make something that, either doesn't make any sense or too complicated. I know that there are articles on the internet that explain the movie but really I don't feel like reading them. I think I'm fine with what I got from the story. Other than that, this movie was really good. I definetely recommend it.

Yes, it is TOO LONG. I didn't feel like the movie needed to be three and a half hours long to tell the story it wanted to tell. I feel like the main theme and the point of the movie could've fit perfectly in a two and a half hour long movie. At points it seemed like the movie dragged too much. There were a lot of scenes that were just boring because of the uninteresting situation, but those scenes were saved by wonderful performances. That is a point I will not deny: The performances are just fantastic. Probably one of the best acted films I've seen all year. This is a movie in which I don't know how to feel, because, like I said, at points it lost my interest, but at other points I thought it was the best film of the year. Its good moments are fantastic and to me, the ending saves the movie completely. Besides the overly long runtime, I noticed some editing and sound issues. I don't know but at points I noticed that the ADR was poorly edited. At some points I saw a character move his lips and there was no audio or it was delayed. There was one point in the movie where there was an editing mistake that felt so amateur: There was a shot and then abruptly cut to another shot, like if the editor messed up. Also there is a scene where the characters are at like a party and, while it's not a crowded and loud place, the scene sounded as if the characters were in a quiet room with a radio playing music in the background, so distracting. Other than that, I feel like this movie was great. I know this might not be a movie for everyone. It has tons of complicated dialogue and the movie relies heavily in dialogue and narration. There's little to no visual storytelling or music (specifically, original score). This movie is tedious but I don't think it's bad or boring.

So this is Zootopia all over again? It is the story about how a fox wants to be a "Top Dog" but the stigmas of the society won't let him and suddenly he is involved in a mission to save his **** yeah, it's basically a rehash of Zootopia but without the creativity or the impressive design of the world. Not only is the plot completely unoriginal, it also doesn't make any sense. It is convoluted as hell. It's filled with tons of clichés and predictable elements, **** feels like the writers either did it on purpose, or haven't seen any movie in their lives. The **** not characters. No one has a believable character. "Swifty" might be the one who has a "character" but I would disagree with that statement, because he has a very dull motivation. He is supposed to be "relatable" because he is pandering to that demographic that has dreams of becoming "someone" and to be "famous" or whatever, because that's his only motivation. The villain is **** writers did it on purpose, don't fool me. He has ALL the cartoon villain clichés: He's over the top, he has a non-sensical plan, he has his "minions" (Those bird things), he's dumb, he has no motivation, he has a "tragic" backstory, he's no threat because he's an idiot, holy Christ! They seriously just made the most boring and cliché villain you could ever imagine. I seriously can't believe it. It must be a joke. Really this movie has all clichés you could imagine, including the generic forced love interest, "comical" ratial stereotypes (which are not funny, specially portraying them with cartoonish accents like this movie) **** guessed it, fart jokes (although just like two times, thank God). In the technical aspects, we have the sound. The sound desing is awful. For some reason the quality of the voices ****? I don't know maybe it was my earphones but the quality of the voices sounded weird, as if they were distorted. It relies too much on music. You can barely hear folies, and some sounds are bad! There are moments where characters get like punched in the face and the sound used for the impact is really weak. The voice acting is awful. Besides Jeremy Renner who for some reason seems like he had a blast, the rest of the actors were just phoning it in. The only reedeming quality this movie has is the animation(? I mean at least this movie looks competent. It looks like they tried in the visual aspect. Overall this is a waste of time. Don't watch it for the love of God. Don't even make your kids watch it. There are so much better kids movies out there on Netflix than this. Don't say that I am being hyperbolic because it's a "kids movie" but I'm sorry. I'm of the opinion that making it for kids is no excuse to not give a ****. Is it fair that I make a bad movie, with a bad script, no characters and a cliché story and then say "it's a kids movie" as an excuse? Excuse me, but no. That is horrible because you know that kids won't question what they watch. They won't criticize the movie or point out flaws. That's horrible because you are making bad movies and justifying your incompetence by saying that it's for an specific demographic.

I Lost My Body10
Nov 30, 2019
I Lost My Body tells a heartbreaking story about Naofel, a guy with a tragic backstory who just wants to live the normal life that was taken away from him. The movie made a really good job in making me connect with him and what he passes through the movie and it did it with great visual storytelling and great dialogue. His journey throughout this movie is genuinely interesting. The story is not told in chronological order. It switches back and forth between different situations and stages of his life, but it is with a purpose and not just like at random. Every single scene adds to his character. He feels like a flawed character. If anything this is his movie. This is a character study movie and he is the character that the audience "studies". Not saying that the rest of the characters were underdeveloped (well, besides Gabrielle, the girl, I guess pretty much every other character is just there as a plot device). The animation and visual style fits perfectly the intended tone of the movie. This movie looks beautiful. The score is also beautiful. There were some moments where I thought that the music felt out of place, but nothing that ruins the movie or anything. The rest of the movie has a score that makes already powerful moments even more powerful. I'm glad to see that Netflix is distributing more independent animation, specially a movie like this which is more adult-oriented. This feels like a passion project. This is an animated movie made with love, with creative ideas. Watching a movie like this feels like a breath of fresh air in an industry dominated mostly by Disney. It is definitely one of the best animated films of the year and I highly recommend it.

Frozen II6
Nov 24, 2019
The original isn't a great movie. It's a solid movie but not great. However, two things that are outstanding in the original, are the songs and **** things that, sadly, aren't as good here. There are twice the number of songs compared to the first one, but besides two really good songs, the rest of them, while not bad, feel uninspired, don't sound as epic and even feel forced. It seemed at times that characters started singing just because it's a Disney musical movie and not because it is essential to the plot like the original. There are some musical numbers that even feel pointless or like a lazy way to explain to the audience how the characters are feeling in the exact moment. The plot feels a bit better than the original in the sense that it doesn't have the same dumb twists or plot conveniences. However, that doesn't mean that the movie told a great story. I feel like the main conflict feels forced. In some way the movie reminded me of Finding Dory because of the way that the main conflict is established. It doesn't feel like a "logical next step" in the franchise. The story doesn't feel like the natural progression of what was established in the first movie. It doesn't leave a notorious impact in the franchise. If anything, this movie makes itself feel pointless. The new characters are forgettable and don't really play any significant role and the characters we know and love from the previous don't grow or have any arc! Elsa is still the same character in the end. She does learn some things about her past but it doesn't seem to affect her for some reason. Anna feels like the same character as how she was in the end of the first (I feel like her arc was completed already and the writers had no idea where to take her now) and other characters like Kristoff are just there and feel pointless. Olaf is much more annoying here than in the previous one. Sometimes he affects the tone of the movie and you could remove him from the plot and nothing will change and there's that salamander creature who's in the movie for absolutely no other reason than to sell toys...Because he's so cute, "awwww". The only thing that I feel it is superior to the original is the animation and the visual effects, but that's expected seeing how 3D animation evolves quickly. Overall, I don't think there isn't anything particularly bad nor anything outstanding. It is inferior to the original in almost every aspect and not even the songs are as good. What was the point of having twice the number of musical numbers if only two are actually memorable? Anyway, if you didn't like the original, this isn't any better, don't watch it. If you're a fan of the original, **** ahead. I think you'll enjoy it... I definetly don't want this movie to be nominated for an Oscar but knowing how the Academy always nominates a Disney or Pixar Movie, then yeah, it will get a nomination, but this is far from being among the best animated films of the year.

Ford v Ferrari8
Nov 24, 2019
Ford v Ferrari might not be a great movie, but it is still pretty good. It is two and a half hours long and it never feels like it, because the story is entertaining, genuinely interesting and flows very smoothly. The fantastic performances from the leads (Matt Damon and Christian Bale) will really make you connect with their characters and follow their journey. They both develop good chemistry and are so fun to watch together. There's some good comedy occasionally and it happens naturally. The humor doesn't affect the tone, because, like I said, it feels natural and not forced for the sake of having humor. While the performances from basically every actor of the cast are really good (not as good as the leads, tho), some of the characters felt like cartoons. Sometimes there are moments that get over the top and feel like they belong better in a dumb comedy film, but those moments don't happen too often and the tone remains consistent (Those moments are entertaining tho, but I felt them out of place). The music feels like stock music downloaded from YouTube, and I feel like the racing sequences would've been a lot more intense with less music. Speaking about the racing sequences; They are amazing. The great cinematography and nice editing really helps to capture the races clearly. There wasn't a single moment in the races where I couldn't understand what was going on. Everything was shown nice and clear. The sound design and the sound mixing were fantastic and really helped make the races intense. Overall this is a really good movie: It has stunning technical aspects and great performances, but I feel like some characters, the music and some writing choices could've been better.

Klaus9
Nov 16, 2019
Klaus is a movie that looks beautiful. I'm so happy to see movies that push boundaries and try to offer something different visually speaking, and this is one of those. There isn't a single moment in the movie that looks bad. It's stunningly beautiful, highly energetic and with so much style. It is like watching moving illustrations. In the other aspects, this movie is still really good. The concept is actually pretty unique. It's basically a Santa Claus "origin story" and a really creative one with so much **** the most part. See, the story for two-thirds of the movie was flawless: The pacing was great, the writing was great, everything felt great. It was until the end of the second act and the third act when I started to really disagree with some writing choices in both story and dialogue. The movie felt sort of anticlimatic in the end. I'm pretty sure that if the writers worked in some more ideas for the second half of the movie, it would've been pretty much a flawless screenplay. There were some emotional moments that really worked, but could've worked so much better if the music choice was better. Speaking about that, there were some music choices that felt out of place. Unlike a movie like Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse which I also critized some music choices, at least the "bad music" made sense because it was established that rap/hip hop music was associated with the main character: Here, there were some songs that felt out of place because they don't fit the setting and the time period at all, which is definetely not the present day. The humor was, in my opinion, pretty "hit or miss", but when it hit, it was really good. The characters are full of personality and charisma. I really love the character design overall. It looks so stylistic and energetic and watching those designs in motion...Jesus Christ! So gorgeous. I'm so happy this movie exists. Despite some issues I pointed out, this is a great movie and one of the best animated movies I've seen during the year. Definetely give it a watch, especially if you're an artist or an animation student or you are just interested in animation, because this is an example of how making something look different from other movies can give it so much personality and uniqueness.

The Addams Family1
Nov 16, 2019
I know nothing about the source material but if this is "accurate" then I assume that the source material is just as boring, unfunny with absolutely no originality as this movie. The movie looks awful. The characters look so ugly and unappealing. It seems that the visual development team only "cared" about the designs of the Addams, because any other character looks ugly as hell. They probably just told modelers "Hey, make a character. We have no character sheets, just make one". Even worse, the movie is trying to tell us that the "normal people" see the Addams as freaks or monsters, but like...They look worse. Maybe that was intentional, like the movie tried to be ironic, but I think most likely that wasn't the case. The **** there a plot? The movie is abou three subplots, one of those is completely pointless as it has no connection to the other two and one of them is about Wednesday! This is a Wednesday movie because she's the only one that is an actual character with an arc, because the rest of the characters are not characters, they are just props saying lines. Every character is one-note and has no charisma or personality. The villain is awful and unintentionally comical because of how generic she is. Her motivations are dumb, her actions are dumb, her lines are dumb, Jesus Christ, I think that the writers did it on purpose because if not it looks like the writers haven't seen any movie in their lives. Speaking about the writing, not only the plot is nonexistent, it has so many dumb and cliché plot points. There's absolutely no originality in any aspect. The movie looks awful and flat. The humor is low-brow and annoying. The "messages" this movie tries to give are so corny and so overused at this point in cinematic history. Everything is bad! The only reason I'm not giving this a 0 is because at least I could watch it without walking out of the theater and there were like two times I kinda laughed. If I were to count the fact that this is directed by the **** director of Sausage Party (A movie with alleged mistreatment to animators from this hack) then it would be a 0, but I'm judging this as if I didn't know that that guy was involved. It pisses me off that people think I over-exaggerate because this is "a kids movie", and yes, it's a kids movie, but that doesn't give anyone the right to make a god-awful piece of sh**. It is infuriating to see that animated movies are hard to make. They are expensive and require hundreds of people working hours and hours, nights without sleep, and yet there are hacks that make movies with absolutely no creativity and love put into anything. I feel so sorry for the animators that worked on this. I know they make it for the money, but I'm sorry for them, because they worked in a movie that is just 90 minutes of nothing. I'm not asking that every single animated movie should be a masterpiece, because we can have room for dumb fun. Just look at Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, that's an example of dumb fun and that's fine. Or look at a movie like How To Train Your Dragon 3, that, while it's not a great movie, it has so much effort and love put into the visuals and the animation. But this movie, just like so many other recent movies, doesn't have any effort in any aspect...

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie8
Nov 10, 2019
Well this was unexpected. Captain Underpants is a movie I didn't expect to like as much as I like it. At first I thought it would be another dumb kids movie with toilet humor every five seconds but it actually turned out to be something different, for the most part. There were things I didn't expect to like as much, like the animation and the visuals. This movie is colorful, energetic, full of style and looks nothing like other Dreamworks movies. It is pretty obvious that they went for a look that is accurate to the source material and I like it. I wonder how Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon or The Boss Baby would've look like if they went the same direction with those. The humor was surprisingly really good. This movie is very "meta" at some points and has some really good self-aware humor I did not see coming. Sure it has some toilet humor here and there. For example, there is a scene where they start making fart noises with numerous whoopee cushions and it is so annoying, but thank god that it doesn't last too long, and the movie actually makes fun of the fact that toilet humor is for the lowest common denominator (which is something I totally **** voice acting was also pretty good. Ed Helms as Principal Krupp/Captain Underpants was really good, so good that he even got a voice acting Annie nomination. I'm not a fan of Kevin Hart and his attempt to make the voice of a kid was a bit annoying at first but then I started to get used to his voice and it turned into an OK performance. Other than that, the acting for the most part was really good. The villain was pathetic. His motivation was so dumb and his actions and dialogue are even dumber, but okay, I get it, that is the point. He's supposed to be pathetic. He reminded me of the Joker from The LEGO Batman Movie, which was also a pathetic villain which you shouldn't take seriously. Really nothing in this movie wants to be taken seriously. It's a really entertaining, cleverly written at times and fun movie and not much else. It's not a great movie. Mainly because the source material isn't "masterpiece material", because even if it is self-aware of its dumb toilet humor, it still has toilet humor, and I'm not a big fan of that. Regardless you should give it a watch. It is definetely worth your time. I dare to say that this is one of the best animated movies of 2017, but to be honest, it doesn't have to much competition. 2017 s*cked in animated films.
