The Hole in the Ground5

This Irish horror tale has its moments of fright but with its most deliberate pacing never seems to gel into a consistently scary film. It's also marred somewhat by some unexplained plot elements, as I see it.

The Mule8
Apr 30, 2019
Inspired by a true story, Clint Eastwood is pitch perfect in the role of an aging horticulturist, who by circumstance finds himself a "mule" for a drug cartel. Bradley Cooper is also excellent as the Special Agent looking to capture him. I was engrossed throughout this movie.

The Last Resort9
Apr 30, 2019
Prior to the "in-crowds" and Art Deco hotels of today's Miami Beach, there was a most vibrant very senior and predominately Jewish community there. This very well told documentary centers mostly on the photographs and film clips of Gary Monroe and Andy Sweet to tell its story. At only about 1 hr. and 10 min. in length I found it very engaging and engrossing.

A Dog's Way Home7

Cute, predictable, and entertaining. Certainly, a movie the whole family can watch and enjoy. The main star of the film is, of course, that adorable pooch.

Mully9
Oct 15, 2018
Can highly recommend this truly remarkable doc, centering on Charles Mully, who overcame a horrific childhood in Kenya to go on to become a self-made millionaire. However, unhappy with his life he had an epiphany to sell all his worldly possessions and use the money to help rescue street orphans from the slums of Kenya and give them a second chance in life. Truly a heart-rending and inspirational film.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom3

Vapid and quite awful addition to the series. When I think back to the wonders and storyline of the original Spielberg film, this one just becomes a terrible disappointment.

S.M.A.R.T. Chase3
Oct 3, 2018
Uninspired art heist flick, with predictable chases and martial arts scenes. Orlando Bloom stars as the head of a security firm, in Shanghai, that specializes in transporting valuable art work. After a priceless Van Gogh is stolen from his, and his team's possession, they're given a second chance by a local museum. They're to transport a most valuable Chinese vase from Shanghai to London. What could go wrong? Oops! Can't recommend this one.

Andres (Giovanny Garcia) and his 12-year-old son Pedro (Reggie Reyes) must flee from a poor neighborhood outside Caracas. Pedro, and his friends, had been accosted at gunpoint by another boy with a gun trying to steal their cellphones. However, after a scuffle the robber is stabbed and left bleeding on the streets. Knowing they'll be violent revenge from the family of the boy, Andres forces his rebellious and headstrong son to leave their home and go on the run with him. Stark and brutal realism here,as the duo must try and survive on odd jobs and sleeping where and when they can. However, the forced time together will give them a chance to possibly improve their difficult relationship. This is the feature debut of Venezuelan filmmaker Gustavo Rondon Cordova, and from what I've read he is trying to illustrate the trying conditions that many in his native country are facing these days. The characters are very real here, but the movie is not for the faint of heart, as it can be difficult to watch at times with its unrelenting dark tone. Also, don't expect a kumbaya ending either.

Terrific documentary on the incredibly multi-talented Rose Marie, beginning with her **** as a 4-year-old singer and carrying the viewer through her remarkable life and career. There's lots of surprises here, and I found the film to be exceptional and totally engaging. Rose Marie was one of a kind, and with her passing in late 2017, at the age of 94, we may never see another performer with her drive and natural abilities.

Toni Collette is brilliant in this frightening tale. I would say certainly a cut above in the horror genre.

Billionaire Boys Club4
Sep 19, 2018
I haven't seen the TV movie, of 1987, depicting this true story, but in this latest film the characters, as portrayed were almost all so unlikable that I couldn't summon up even the slightest empathy or compassion for any of them. For me, this was just a trek into greed and foolishness on both sides of the Ponzi scheme (pre Bernie Madoff), and it all added up to a movie that was not enjoyable.

Siberia4
Sep 18, 2018
A plot that goes nowhere and is confusing and an absolutely terrible and nonsensical ending as I see it.
Numerous explicit scenes (with one being extremely vulgar), and raw language throughout. Probably doesn't even deserve a 4 but I did stay with it, unfortunately, to see how it would all turn out.

Zoo8
Sep 16, 2018
Poignant drama with believable characters, as a group of youths, aided by an animal loving neighbor (Penelope Hilton) try and save a baby elephant during the Belfast Blitz, in 1941. Mixing many heart-warming moments with some sad ones, I thought the movie was engaging and uplifting overall.
Sep 12, 2018
Dark Crimes4
Sep 12, 2018
A twisted, dark, and sordid tale set in post-Soviet Poland. Jim Carrey, in a straight dramatic role, portrays a detective, close to retirement and in disfavor in the police department, who is trying to solve a cold case. One of the main elements in the movie is sado-masochistic sexual assaults on women. By the time the film was over, I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters here.

One convoluted mess of a movie, and to make matters worse my DVD copy only had Spanish and French subtitles.Since the sound quality was terrible, the whole viewing experience from top to bottom was torturous. I would say definitely pass on this dud.

Please Stand By8
Sep 10, 2018
Bravura performance by Dakota Fanning here, with excellent support from Toni Collette, Alice Eve, and Patton Oswalt (in a small but important role). Fanning portrays Wendy, a young woman with autism who is determined to get to Los Angeles to submit her Star Trek based script for a Paramount Pictures contest. It may break your heart more than once, but I felt the trek was well worth it in the end. Sharp writing from Michael Golamco based on his own play. This film really surprised me in a most positive way.

Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd are a gay couple of 10 years, who find Coogan's 10-year-old grandson (Jack Gore) on their doorstep, after his father has been jailed and his mother has died. Coogan is at his best portraying his supercilious character, while Rudd also does well as the practical partner. There are some laughs and wit here, but be aware that a good part of the humor is raunchy with explicit language throughout, as well as some suggestive scenes.

Western7
Aug 31, 2018
Not for those seeking an action flick, as this is a slow paced, cerebral and character driven film, successfully utilizing non-professional actors. A group of German construction workers are sent to rural Bulgaria to build a water plant. The relations between the two cultures can be amiable at times, despite the language barrier, but can also quickly turn tense, even hostile. There's also tension among the construction workers themselves. Overall, you'll need patience to get any rewards from this slow-burn foreign film, but the atmospherics will make you feel like you're right there in rural Bulgaria.

Operation Red Sea2
Aug 27, 2018
Main focus of this film seems to be a promotion of the ingenuity and acumen of the Chinese Navy and Special Forces above all else. Overly long, at well over 2 hrs.,the movie contains extended battle scenes, that can get quite bloody and gory, and which became to me very tedious and repetitious. Can't recommend.
Aug 24, 2018
Bad Samaritan7
Aug 24, 2018
David Tennant is certainly believable here as a deranged psycho and Robert Sheehan is also excellent as a young man who breaks into Tennant's home to rob him, but instead finds a female captive (Kerry Condon). This will all lead to very dangerous consequences for Sheehan and anyone in his orbit. This is the type of movie that if you look too closely at the plot holes it can seem too far fetched, but if one just goes with the flow the movie can be quite engrossing in its own bizarre way.

Damascus Cover7
Aug 22, 2018
Although some of the Israeli Mossad Agent's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) decisions here are head shakingly foolish and some of the plot elements can get confusing, there's enough intrigue and surprises in the movie to be able to recommend. Sadly, John Hurt's final film and, as usual, he is superb in a supporting role.
Aug 21, 2018
Black Water7
Aug 21, 2018
This action flick was somewhat better than I expected, with all the poor reviews it has received. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a veteran CIA agent who is taken to a Black Site, which is a retrofitted former Navy sub, when he is thought to have changed sides. He will have to try and escape teaming with a new agent (Jasmine Waltz). They'll be plenty of surprises and double-crosses along the way. Dolph Lundgren has more of a secondary role, but does appear more often in the final third of the movie. Overall, some of the plot elements here are very non-believable but the film kept me engaged and I would say it's not a great movie but certainly watchable.

Shock and Awe9
Aug 19, 2018
Having followed those times very closely, it's my opinion that everything in Rob Reiner's latest film is spot-on true. There's an all-star cast here and the film moves along at a most engaging pace, with reminders to me of All the President's Men and Spotlight in its way of presentation. Yes, it has its agenda but what's wrong with an agenda that tells the truth no matter how hard it is to swallow.

On Chesil Beach5

Ronan, as usual, captures the screen, and there are some powerful moments in the film. However, between the many extremely awkward even cringe inducing scenes and the often confusing flashbacks I can only give this one a fair rating.
Aug 16, 2018
The Yellow Birds7
Aug 16, 2018
The methodical pacing here will turn off a lot of viewers, especially those looking for an action packed war movie. This is a cerebral film that can be most difficult to watch at times, but it's an important movie because it illustrates on a very personal level the horrific effects of war on soldiers in the battlefield and upon their return home. The mystery of what happened to one of the soldiers in Iraq slowly unfurls through numerous **** acting all around is A-1.

The Rider10
Aug 11, 2018
Brilliant and mesmerizing movie shot with non-actors on a Lakota Sioux reservation in South Dakota. Brady Jandreau is superb in the lead role here, but truly the whole cast offers astounding realism. What makes it all the more remarkable is that the writer and director is a young Chinese-born female filmmaker. Definitely not for action flick only viewers, but for those that can get into a low-key. cerebral, and often very dark movie then you may very well find this one to your liking.

Can't recommend. Love Katie Sackoff from the Longmire TV series but there's only so much she can do in this convoluted sci-fi flick that really drags at times.

Aardvark4
Aug 7, 2018
Feature debut of writer and director Brian Shoaf has a strong cast but the storyline is just too obtuse, choppy, and ****'s only at the end that things come together but it's too little too late. Is Jenny Slate's character the worst therapist in the history of movies, for the way she speeds through every therapist/client no-no and stop sign?

The Endless7
Aug 3, 2018
Type of low budget sci-fi flick that some will love and others will be asking "what did I just watch"? I found it intriguing, and yet quite frustrating at times, with a fascinating realism about it. It gains momentum and starts explaining more as it progresses to its rather shocking conclusion.

Final Portrait6

Not for everyone, one must have the patience to stay with this well acted but deliberately paced and, at times, disjointed movie. However for me, the subtle humor, eccentricity of the characters and the storyline made the experience worthwhile.

Humor is awkward, cliched, and often cringe inducing. I would suggest avoiding this painful slog.

Love After Love6
Jul 25, 2018
First time feature director Russell Harbaugh uses a technique of skipping in time during the movie and leaves it to the viewer to figure it all out. I'm not a big fan of that technique, and I believe many viewers will find it a turn-off. Despite that and the fact that some of the main characters are quite flawed and unlikable, I was able to find enough of interest here to stay with the movie, although normally this type of film would not appeal to me. I imagine I wanted to see how the angry undercurrents and dysfunction of the family, led by Andie MacDowell, were going to play out. All in all, it can be most difficult to watch but I thought it at least earned a fair rating in my book.

The Con Is On1
Jul 25, 2018
The cast is strong but unfortunately the movie is quite awful. Intended black comedy falls completely flat, the characters are terribly unlikable and they're either hurling expletives or under the influence in nearly every scene. Save yourself the pain.

Lean on Pete9
Jul 19, 2018
Just a wonderful movie! As many reviewers have noted, a bravura performance by Charlie Plummer, and really the whole cast is superb. Steve Buscemi is always great, Chloe Sevigny is completely believable as a shady jockey, and it's great to see Alison Elliott again in a most moving role. I can't believe it's been 20 years since I saw her wonderful performance in "Spitfire Grill". I surely am getting old.

Bye Bye Germany6
Jul 19, 2018
The fine actor Moritz Bleibtreu leads the way here as a Holocaust survivor living in a U.S. Displaced Persons Camp (who even knew they existed?), amid the rubble of post-war Frankfurt, Germany. He will rally other survivors into joining him in a linen business, so they can successfully emigrate to Palestine or America. However, he is also under investigation by a U.S. Special Agent (the striking Antje Traue) for possible collaboration with the ****. I thought the movie combined humor and tragedy effectively, for the most part, but the film does leave some key plot elements unanswered. Overall, though, I found the movie to be quite clever, original, and engaging.
Jul 19, 2018
Traffik4
Jul 19, 2018
Maintains some tension, but it's just a mediocre film, unfortunately. It does highlight, though, a most important issue, that of the global human traffiking of women, and those in positions of power who choose to look the other way or even share in the profiteering.

Future World1

Killing Gunther5
Dec 26, 2017
This mockumentary had some amusing and clever moments, but it wore thin after a while and became somewhat tedious. Taran Killam makes his directorial debut here, wrote the screenplay and stars in the film. He's a hitman who assembles a team of assassins to kill the mysterious and legendary hitman known as Gunther (Arnold Schwarzenegger). All in all, some laughs at times, but the movie did not consistently sustain its humor.

Dementia 136
Dec 26, 2017
I am not a hard core horror movie fan nor did I see the original of this film decades ago by the iconic director Francis Ford Coppola. In this remake, despite the gory mayhem and murders this movie kept me engaged and interested enough to see how it would all turn out and what was behind it all. Overall, I've certainly seen worse and I would say it was better than what I expected if you don't mind the bloodshed.

Blood Money2
Dec 25, 2017
John Cusack is OK as a nutso embezzler here but many of the plot elements are just ridiculous and the characters so annoying and unlikable that by the time the movie came to its conclusion I really didn't care what happened to any of them. All in all, I would say it's not worth your time.
