Dark Crimes

This is a well-made, well-acted and sometimes intriguing but also coldly cynical and manipulative murder mystery.

Carrey commits one hundred and ten percent, fluctuating accent notwithstanding. It’s only a matter of time before his newfound artistic intensity will be matched to suitable material to create something special.

Carrey doesn’t deliver any sizzle in this role. Csokas chews him right out of their scenes, and the always soulful Gainsbourg (“Nymphomaniac,” “Antichrist”) lets us think we’re looking right into her horrific past, even if this dull, obvious “mystery” doesn’t seem worthy of any of their talents.

Although inspired by an interesting post-modern true crime story, and featuring an unexpectedly depressive performance from Jim Carrey, Dark Crimes is a dull, dark, depressing film with very little on its mind.

The only subtlety to be found is in the performance of singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, though it’s her co-star, Jim Carrey, who will be the subject of most of this strange, ugly film’s discussion. And why not? It’s a bizarre, fascinating turn for Carrey.

Here, a few words should be said about Carrey’s performance: It may be the worst dramatic acting of his career, a charmless cartoon of self-repression.

There’s a lot of sexual violence in the film, but it scans as unimaginatively repulsive, as well as blatantly misogynistic.

I thought this would be more of a mindf*** sort of movie, however it's actually very straightforward, and not mysterious, which makes it rather boring in the end. I do like how there is this sense of sinister forces lurking offscreen, manipulating events from the shadows. Its grey and run-down settings remind me a lot of 'A Serbian Film', although it's not anywhere close to being as messed up. I think the script, the acting, the visuals are all decent. There are some intriguing statements being communicated to the viewer via the plot and by certain characters. Overall, the movie is only mediocre.

I only gave it 4 because of Jim Carrey and because I managed to watch it all. At first thought it will be either interesting crime drama or something like movie with unexpected twists and stuff but in the end was pretty boring movie with not much happening and not feeling interested in it whole time.

A twisted, dark, and sordid tale set in post-Soviet Poland. Jim Carrey, in a straight dramatic role, portrays a detective, close to retirement and in disfavor in the police department, who is trying to solve a cold case. One of the main elements in the movie is sado-masochistic sexual assaults on women. By the time the film was over, I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters here.

I think the vast majority knows that when Jim Carrey wants to play dramatic roles, he knows how to do it well but what is the point when he gets scripts so **** up like this one? I was hopeful because what I saw in the trailers caught my attention but really this film is a very bitter disappointment.

"Dark Crimes" was a very bad story, vulgar and too slow, the performances were not very decent and Jim Carrey did not stand out, the story is not even said, it could not be recommended, because from the beginning they will come out with a bad instant face.
