Writer-director Colin McIvor adapts the true-ish story of how a handful of citizens came to the rescue of a baby elephant into an unlikely family film, one that will delight the kids (who see themselves portrayed as heroes) while leaving parents with a lot of explaining to do.

It all plays out more convincingly than it may sound, with McIvor layering in depth, dimension and grace. Period re-creation is also first rate and, for animal fans, there’s eye candy aplenty in the form of giraffes, lions, chimps, flamingos and, of course, one soulful elephant.

Zoo is a sweet and occasionally sad tale, told with sensitivity and performed with great charm by all concerned.

Poignant drama with believable characters, as a group of youths, aided by an animal loving neighbor (Penelope Hilton) try and save a baby elephant during the Belfast Blitz, in 1941. Mixing many heart-warming moments with some sad ones, I thought the movie was engaging and uplifting overall.

It's not bad but I think it seems too inclined and aimed for kids and pre-adolescents audiences. Emotive at times and slow at others, the argument is moderately original but never feels artificial while the performances are acceptable. An interesting option depending on your mood.
